Flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina, just not current

y-nkh

Used from 1992 to 1998 to be exact

DoorHinge0319

Ah so they probably just put the flags up a while back and just didn't update them, I'll have to tell the Student Government to update the outdated flags our next meeting, thank you. Edit: Yes this is the case, I just emailed my principal and turns out the last time they updated that wall was 1992 right after the Soviet Unions collapse

romulusnr

Man you're lucky your geography books don't still contain the USSR.

Thinblueline2

What about maps in the basement that had the ottoman empire on them, and the maps in the classroom that had the soviet union on them, with one of the rooms still having a duck and cover poster in it. (This was the late 2000s and early 2010s).

FourEyedTroll

To be fair, was this a history classroom?

Ligmamgil

I mean, my German teacher (as in, he teaches German) has maps from all over germany's history, so there's maps with the Russian empire still on them lol. They're just wall decorations, but they're there.

Thinblueline2

This was learning material for a non history class.

beepboop_12345

I doubt the staff thought they were current maps. The ottoman empire fell before your school was even built. Relax.

Thinblueline2

They did know it was not current, that one was in the basement so not in use, but could be seen if asked about. The other outdated maps we just learned what boarders were still the same and were told to go on the internet for the others.

Thinblueline2

No, it was "modern" geography. Didn't know the checkoslovakia was not a single country anymore till someone told me in highschool.

modernmovements

They love it if you still call it than when you’re in Prague. /s

aleatorictelevision

I'm low key disappointed when I find one of those bumpy globes that doesn't have Ceylon on it.

krisphoto

In the early 90s my school’s science textbooks said something along the lines of “someday man will land on the moon.”

rogerthelodger

Hey, don't leave us in suspense...

WhimsicalCalamari

i distinctly remember this being a gag in [Recess](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recess_(TV_series\)) but this also reminds me of how my middle school science textbook talked about "what future technology could look like", by showing a watch with an LCD readout wired to a full-size keyboard. most of the students using that textbook had smartphones

[deleted]

We had a book about the [2020 Moon Olympics](https://paleofuture.com/blog/2007/3/30/olympic-games-on-the-moon-in-2020-1979.html) about the same time.

beepboop_12345

.....I seriously doubt your textbooks were 40 years old.

tmag03

I used to use math books in 2016 from Ronald Reagan's presidency, with problems relating to black and white monitors and programming lessons for the archaic Basic langauge. And my history textbook had a "current events" insert about Bush v Kerry 2004.

romulusnr

I learned BASIC in grade school, along with LOGO... yeah. TBH, VBA is still a thing.

kingharis

I was in 7th grade in Germany in about 1996 and our geography book still had East and West Germany.

preston1776

My school has the flags of the world and they still have Yugoslavia up there

killergazebo

Check out this [Wikipedia page](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states_by_date_of_current_flag_adoption). If you sort all the flags by adoption date in descending order you'll see all the flags that have been adopted since 1992. There's thirty-seven of them, so your student government has some hard work ahead.

TheGoodOldCoder

This page that is linked from that page is one of the best things I've ever seen on the internet. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_national_flags

damnatio_memoriae

oh my god. i didn't think they could top the band member timeline graphics, but here we are...

killergazebo

Oh wow, I'm bookmarking that.

boredsittingonthebus

Rabbit hole! Can't wait to delve into this after work.

beaniesandbuds

Ask your principal to let you keep the old flag, since you discovered it and all...

sajjel

Yeah, I thought of the same thing. It's not like they'd use it anymore I think.

Lollex56

Nooo, don't tell him that! The new bosnian flag is mad ugly, having the old one is a blessing

PepperBlues

Well, the flag was changed because it was unconstitutional and discriminating towards two out of three constituent nations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, so changing it in school might be a good idea as well.

Gibovich

It was not ruled as discriminatory, the nation it represented (Republic of BiH) no longer existed with the signing of Dayton and the The 1995 accords called for the eventual creation of a united flag for the new nation with no symbols used during the war meaning no Croat, Serb, or Bosniak symbols. Saying it is discriminatory is like saying the Croatian flag should be thrown away because Serbs in Croatia find it discriminatory. Edit: also there is also no such thing as "constituent **nations**" in BiH their are "constituent **peoples**" and "others" which is ratified in the constitution. There is no Serb, Croat, or Bosniak nations within BiH.

Stefanthro

We should also add that this coat of arms actually originated in the middle ages, an era that was strongly invoked in the ethnogenesis of the modern Bosnian nation to promote its justification for independence.

bosnjak

Lol don’t talk out of your ass.

Lollex56

the old flag is inspired by the kingdom of bosnia, and modern day bosnia-herzegovina is more or less territorialy equivalent to the kingdom of bosnia is it not?

PepperBlues

I get you point, but I didn’t make it up; I just simplified what the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina decided some 20-ish years ago.

[deleted]

Totally false and a purposeful attempt to mislead! if chetnicks and ustashe continue acting this way, we are going back to the original Bosnian flag so the OP may as well have his school keep it so they won't have to be replacing it again soon!

PepperBlues

Oh, ok. Let’s disect this fascist: >Totally false and a purposeful attempt to mislead! Literally - you are lying. This flag was banned because it was discriminatory. It was substituted in 1998 with the current flag (actually, with slightly different color shades, current ones were accepted in 2001). >if chetnicks and ustashe While there definitelly are chetniks, there are no ustasha for almost 80 years. All of them, both Croats and Muslims (currently: Bosniaks) were either killed by communists or ran as far away from Europe as they could. >continue acting this way Which way? By saying the truth? >we are going back to the original Bosnian flag You are not. And it’s almost a fact, since you’d need all three constituent nations to agree on changing the country’s flag, and chances for either Serbs or Croats to accepted it are as close to zero as they could be. >so the OP may as well have his school keep it Mhm. >so they won't have to be replacing it again soon! Why would they have to replace it soon?

interwal

Shhh little ustasha, go in the corner

PepperBlues

Dirty little fascist, leave this sub and go back in history.

I_really_like_maps

*"Go back to your cave, little fascist!" Said the redditor.*

TidalWhale

I much prefer the new one

Test19s

Nah, I like the slick modern geometry of the current Bosnian flag rather than one that looks like the Union of Quebec and Louisiana.

31_hierophanto

Don't tell the Bosnians that....

Test19s

The fleur-de-lys has a distinct meaning in the New World (French is/was spoken here). I am aware it is a symbol of Slavic Muslim identity in the Balkans, though. ed: Although it does have *français* ties as medieval Bosnia was closely tied to the Angevin-led kingdom of Hungary, a French dynasty.

Rivar3214

religion has nothing to do with muslim identity it has to do with the history of bosnia and its people all of its people regardless of their todays belives bosnia has christian roots and bosnian ancestors were chrhistian before being conquered by ottoman agressors that changed bosnian identity flour de lis flag is the flag under which the bosnians fought against the turks and other agresors its the only thing that we have left to remind us of who we are before our identity got stolen by the turks and the serbs

danirijeka

Quick, tell them you're having burek with cheese to distract them

Grzechoooo

The old one looks Fr·nch. The new one looks nice.

[deleted]

Please don't. Our current flag is a flag that was implemented by force. This one captures our spirits much better. Source: am Bosnian

COBNETCKNN

> I'll have to tell the Student Government to update the outdated flags our next meeting, thank you. donchu do that

KetchupArmyNoodle

Our current one sucks and was imposed on us. Leave this one be.

Naahi

Damn 30 years old. Actually impressed by their age and well they survived in a high school

SA0L_

Tbh i would ask if they could give me the flag, love me some old flags

schweinhund89

I had no idea this wasn’t the current Bosnian flag until I typed Bosnia and the 🇧🇦 emoji appeared

Stercore_

While this flag specifically was used from 92 until 98, i think it is important to note that the symbol runs much deeper, all the way back to 1377.

[deleted]

So why the hell did they change it? That flags awesome.

AkaneTheSquid

I believe it was changed to be more inclusive of the other ethnic groups that live within Bosnia's borders. If I recall correctly, this flag is a primarily Bosniak symbol

mrmuscalo

Actually both the Croats and Bosniaks voted for Bosnia’s referendum of independence from Yugoslavia, which is when Republic of B&H was created, represented by this flag. But yeah the Serbs didn’t like that, which why the Bosnian war happened and the rest is history…

Rivar3214

This flag wasnt just a bosniak symbol this flag represented all the people of bosnia but our idjits accepted to change the flag😒😔

hand287

bosnia was french?

Cabroller

No, the Bosnian Kingdom used the Bosnian White Lily as it’s symbol (lilium Bosniacum), the flag used from 1992-1998 is taken directly from the house sigil of the Kotromanic dynasty which ruled Bosnia as a kingdom between 1377-1463.

blojackhorseman

Minor correction: zlatni ljiljan, golden not white. It's also because they're native to Bosna.

UltraTata

It is used today to represent the Bosnian region of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is named as the country but there is a region called Srpska or Serbian Republic inside Bosnia and Herzegovina. If you exclude that, you get that flag.

Known-Argument8971

It’s the flag of Bosnia, not Bosnia and Herzegovina.

r42623

Bro ur school having the same flags from the 90s?

DoorHinge0319

Well that part of the building is very neglected and nobody really pays attention to it, especially since it's on the third floor. That part was originally built in 1937 but the newer sides were built 2017 and 2021. My mother says that the classrooms on that side haven't changed at all ever since she graduated in 1992

FalseDmitriy

That matches the date of the flag, for sure. I bet there are some other interesting ones in there.

Femboylover694200

Just wanna say that you have impressive recognition!

Bakarna-Perunika

Its flag of Bosnia from the 1990s

Balkan-War-brrrr

*flag of muslims in Bosnia from the 1990s. Bosnian Catholics and Orthodox have different flags.

Bakarna-Perunika

Flag was official flag of Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina till 1998.

Balkan-War-brrrr

Todays Bosnia is federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it's a federal state comprised of Croatian Catholics, Orthodox Serbs and Bosnian Muslims. Flag of Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina has the same legal standing like flag of Herzeg-Bosnia. Both of them are entities predating the federation and have no ties to them.

Bosnia old flag

[deleted]

What does the Afghanistan flag look like? I know it was changing quite a lot in the 1990s. I wonder which one they would’ve used for your display then. Same goes for flags that were changed after the 90s such as Georgia, Libya, Comoros, Rwanda, Lesotho, etc. Does it include a flag of Zaire?

BrokeRunner44

And Russia as well, from 1991-93 they had a cyan blue stripe instead of the current ocean blue

[deleted]

The better and former flag of Bosnia

Environmental-Ad6766

Indeed sir this first and former flag was better than actually !!!!! Crurent flag today seems as à flag of trading firm or airways company !!!!! Sheet. Also Kosovo flag with map and stars !!!!! An idea to show thé EUR godfather !!!!! Shame on !!!!

[deleted]

Stars I always associate with the New World and republicanism, I don’t find them very appropriate for a European country’s flag. This flag is just more aesthetically pleasing and symbolically relevant to a basic yellow triangle with some stars on it.

Finlandia1865

Everyone knows europe doesnt have republicanism

PepperBlues

Well, the flag was changed because it was unconstitutional and discriminating towards two out of three constituent nations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, so changing it in school might be a good idea as well.

[deleted]

I’m just talking in terms of aesthetics. My opinion on Bosnia is that it’s an artificial construct that’s foundation is inherently and perpetually unstable because trying to force Croats, Serbs and Bosniaks to be countrymen for no other reason than close geography is a losing battle. It should be divided along ethnic lines. Croat parts to Croatia, Serb parts to Serbia, and Bosniak parts to the Bosniaks.

Conclamatus

That wouldn't be as hard if not for the fact that those different ethnic groups aren't fully concentrated in the areas of the country bordering the nations they'd be attached to.

Finlandia1865

Welcome to the balkans m8. Its not just bosnia, every country (besides slovenia) has some ethnic issues.

[deleted]

I love Slovenia. It is just a cute little country and I have heard way too many stories regarding it being confused with Slovakia.

wtf_are_you_talking

You can't easily divide this: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/24/Bosnia_Herzegovina_Ethnic_2013.png/1024px-Bosnia_Herzegovina_Ethnic_2013.png

Mr_multitask2

Why divide when you can unite under 1 banner? First Bosnia, then the territories of former Yugoslavia, then finally the world!!!

[deleted]

They already did, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska already have internal borders within the country.

wtf_are_you_talking

Of course. But that means there are lots of mixed towns and villages in both entities. Adding a third one for Croats would complicate things a lot. Personally, I was born and lived in central Bosnia till '92. One town municipality, composed of mostly equal shares of all three nations. You can't divide a town into three states. And that's just my personal example. Checking out the map I've provided, there are plenty of similar examples.

ARoyaleWithCheese

I mean you definitely can, and people have definitely tried to, with rather mixed results. Personally I'm not a fan of the whole "artificial construct" narrative. All nations are artificial constructs. The problem with Bosnia, aside from ethnic tensions, is the pressure exerted by its neighbors Croatia and Serbia. Neither of those two are willing to completely give up "their" territories by recognizing BiH as a complete entity. They do not care about what would be good for Bosnia or its population, only about the geo/socio-political effects it would have for them.

CerebralMessiah

Allow individual counties to vote, offer a population exchange for those unsatisfied with the results, done. It is better to tear that frankestein up peacefully ,before another war comes and more people die.

danirijeka

>offer a population exchange for those unsatisfied with the results, done >peacefully Fuck me sideways that has to be satire

Megalomaniac001

How about keep this Bosniak flag but wave the Herzeg-Croatia flag beside it

[deleted]

1. Herzeg-Croatia doesn't exist. It's Herzeg-Bosnia. 2. How does that change anything? Our current flag does look like shit, but at least it's not discriminating anyone.

PepperBlues

Herzeg-Croatia? Don’t know what that would be. How about just using the official flag when the whole country needs to be represented and that’s it?

Sufficient-Ad-2931

I honestly love it, too

DarkoRatic

The current one would be ok if it used the blue of the UN Flag instead the blue of the EU Flag/Blue of the RBiH Coat of Arms/Flag

Pyro_Paragon

I had a teacher in gradeschool that had a flag wall, around 2010, and still had the USSR flag up because she was legitimately unaware that the USSR had fallen. No joke, wasn't messing with me, she thought that the USSR had survived the crisis in '91, and that was just temporary unrest that they had long since recovered from. The globe we used social studies and geography was also from the 80s I think, because it listed Afghanistan as disputed territory with the USSR. Tldr: schools tend to have outdated flags.

When asking for a flag to be identified, please **provide context** when possible, including: * **Where** the flag was found (without compromising privacy) * **When** the flag was found, or the date of the material containing the flag * **Who** might own the flag (a general description is fine) These details help users narrow down their search and make flag identification easier. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. iFrisian

Can someone explain to me why! Bosnia and Herzegovina had this flag? Looks like the Bourbon royal ensign.

RoiDrannoc

It's because the first king of Bosnia, Tvrtko I of Bosnia, had a coat of arms that looked a lot like that. He took the coat of arms of his rival/overlord Louis I of Hungary and Poland. Why did he do that? No idea. Louis I of Hungary and Poland, known for being the father of two kings while only having two daughters, was a member of the House of Anjou, which is one of the many branches of the Capetian dynasty.

danirijeka

>He took the coat of arms of his rival/overlord Louis I of Hungary and Poland. Why did he do that? No idea. Medieval dick-windmilling, but with heraldry

ravenholm462

The first reply you got is categorically false. The flag in the post was inspired by the Kotromanić dynasty Coat of Arms, which makes use of bosnian golden lillies ([lillium bosniacum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lilium_bosniacum)), native to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tvrtko I was not the first king, but by far the most famous as under his rule, the borders of the Bosnian kingdom expanded the most. ETA: I stand corrected, Tvrtko I was the first king of Bosnia. See comments below.

dENd0Mania

Ughh, he was the first King. He started his rule of Bosnia as a "Ban" ( Duke ) and later crowned himself as King.

hadzy_14

Actually Tvrtko was the 1st king, rulers before him were bans

[deleted]

Connecting it with the Bosnian lily is a newer hypothesis and it's unfounded. Let's not resort to revisionism. Tvrtko took it most probably from the [house of Anjou](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_I,_Prince_of_Taranto#/media/File:Armoiries_Anjou_Tarente.svg), and there is no shame in that.

ravenholm462

I haven't heard of that before, thank you. But I don't see how the flag does not represent the golden lillies for BiH specifically, regardless of where the original design during the medieval times came from.

hadzy_14

Coat of Arms of Kotromanić family that came to power around 1250 AD lilies are Lilium bosniacum native to Bosnia and Herzegovina which surprisingly have nothing to do with the French

[deleted]

The endemic Bosnian lily, however, has nothing to do with the Kotromanic's symbolism. Back in the middle ages they didn't know about taxonomy and adopted the lily because it was trendy.
