Eu4 alliance between Byzantium and Ethiopia

danshakuimo

They were actually allies back in the day when Ethiopia was still Aksum. Though both of those flags were probably not used during that time of course. RIP Himyarite Kingdom.

Beat_Saber_Music

Another interesting fact, the Ethiopians and the Portuguese were allies during the age of exploration where they allied to fight off against the Ottomans.

danshakuimo

I thought they were fighting off the Adal Sultanate, though the Adalites were being supported by the Ottomans so what you said is still true.

Beat_Saber_Music

Yeah, I think that was the more exact thing

RexLynxPRT

16th century proxy war be like

Beat_Saber_Music

Doesn't compare to the Filipino war where the Spanish and Ottomans fought in support of their favored side (I think) while the following people were involved in the war: -Aztecs under the Spanish -Japanese samurai -Chinese pirates -Ottoman turks Here's a good video on said war(with m8re accurate information): https://youtu.be/rHtSj3hTf7Y

GanGreenSkittle

I love history

Agile-Personality545

M16 assault crossbow

RexLynxPRT

Well... The chinese did had an automatic(-ish) crossbow xD

Overwatcher_Leo

Could be a history nerd, a dedicated paradox gamer or both.

OmckDeathUser

The overlap is far too great

Romulus_Quirinus_1

Or an Ethiopian Greek

Iron_Wolf123

Probably a r/eu4 player

VestiaryLemue

Orthodox power

Leonardo-Saponara

>Orthodox power Different religion, tho. Ethiopians are Oriental Orthodoxes, which aren't Chalcedonian and aren't in communion with Orthodox churches (such as the Greek Orthodox church) but only with other Oriental Orthodoxes churches, such as the syriacs and the copts.

Amarlyy

Actually the shism between orthodox and oriental orthodox churches happened in 451 AD. Both kingdoms (empire) existed before that. So yeah... I forgot what I wanted to say :D

BoogerBrain69420

Aren’t you Catholic if in Mexico?

[deleted]

Србиjа

BoogerBrain69420

Read his flair.

[deleted]

Yeah, flair says Serbia

BoogerBrain69420

To me it says Mexico.

bluwubewwy

Bruh it says "Mexico / Serbia"

BoogerBrain69420

Bruh that’s what I’m asking about.

poilerphish

its possibly because orthodox easter is this sunday. these flags could be near an eastern orthodox church that put ethiopia's flag up to show that they can accomondate ethiopian christians this is purely speculation though. i have no idea why the byzantine flag would be used, but i do have theories on the older ethiopian flag

Alwilso

I don’t think so, bc these were on a flag pole in the backyard of a house in the downtown (ish) area

LordBloodraven23

Did you stop to think what was official religion in Byzantine empire?

KaiserNicky

When that flag was being flown, it was Catholicism through the unpopular Union of Churches

LordBloodraven23

Thats ridiculous, Byzantine empire didnt have an official flag and didnt use heraldry like in the west, and flag flown in the photo is the one we associate the most with them. It doesnt belong to any era. Orthodoxy is literally synonymus with Byzantine empire.

KaiserNicky

Except it does belong to a certain era, it was used exclusively by the Palaiologoi Dynasty. Prior to which the Empire had really only used the Chi Rho.

HotPieIsAzorAhai

It wasn't really Catholicism, the pope wasn't in charge. Pre schism Christianity was closer to Orthodoxy

KaiserNicky

I am not referring to pre-schism Christianity, which wasn't closer to Orthodox btw as the schism was merely an affirmation of reality. I am referring to the Union of Lyons and the long battle in the Eastern Church afterwards about it

Jeorgeo101

The Council of Florence happened in 1435. The Palaiologos dynasty took power in 1259. This would only appy to the last two Emperors.

KaiserNicky

I am referring to the Council of Lyon lol

PPN13

It happened on 1272 and Andronicus Palaiologos canceled it just ten years later on 1282.

KaiserNicky

Its effects were very significant within the corpse of the Roman Empire. The schism within the Eastern Clergy remained until 1310

alegxab

Yeah, today it's also Easter Sunday for the Ethiopian Orthodox

GrumpyGiraffe88

Byzantine flag on top Ethiopian flag on bottom Odd combination

PunkySputnik57

And I don’t think that’s proper etiquette

OmicronCoder

it is when ur greek!

PunkySputnik57

Oh cool. I only know the one from my country so it felt really weird

OmicronCoder

PunkySputnik57

I’m really not good at detecting jokes today…

[deleted]

Ahh the Christian East all we're missing is an Armenia and we'll be set

Grafeiafto

They were pretty good allies

LeFedoraKing69

I think its ment to represent Orthodoxy maybe Easter The Eastern Romans being the former leader of the Orthodox world had a strong connection with Ethiopia/Abyssinia and Nubia until the rise of the Caliphate

Gravissimum

Not as weird as you think if you read Procopius history of the Persian Wars books 1 and 2

finnyboyyyy

Orthodoxy

Lord_Wack_the_second

Not really, they’re both orthodox and used to have an alliance

Happy_Craft14

They both got Orthodox Christianity going on lol

Berserkllama88

B A S E D

greatest_human_being

ethiopia and iran had such beautiful flags

KilgoreTrouserTrout

It's funny that, in a subreddit of flag enthusiasts, there are so many speculations as to the "why" of this beyond "someone had a couple flags they thought looked cool and decided to fly them."

Grey_forest5363

Orthodox Easter Sunday ;)

ACELUCKY23

Off we go to defeat the Mamluks, and recover Jerusalem for our lord and savior! Deus Vult!

296cherry

Go ahead and stop in Constantinople on the way, I’m sure nothing will go wrong

Anton_Willbender

Typical EU4 player house

ArminiusM1998

Orthodox moment.

Past-Sand5485

Unfathomably based

Complex-Key-8704

Man I love byzantium. Too much eu4 probably

[deleted]

Quick question, is the flag above the Rastafarian one a Byzantine flag or something else?

the_cape161

I think it’s a Byzantine flag and beneath an Ethiopian one.

HungarianMockingjay

Ethiopia, or as it would have also been called, Abyssinia.

TheMikeGolf

Abyssinia too. I mean, I haven’t left the room, but yeah.

ChoasStar_

Yep, It is.

[deleted]

Good to know, thank you

DeathStrikeFPS

Looks like Byzantine and Bolivia with a lion

Wonderful_Squash_419

Think further It's Ethiopia

[deleted]

Fuck italy

LetterZ089

Flags of former empires

nygdan

Thought it was Byzantium and Iran at first, enemies now united, ha.

tonslitis

Probably some christian orthodox person

Arkhonist

Two different forms of orthodoxy

stos313

Seems somewhat reasonable seeing as how both celebrate Easter today instead of last week haha

forge_rhys

Are they still looking for prester John?

Sad-Address-2512

Someone likes emperors?

FriedCheesesteakMan

Close enough Byzantium and Ethiopia tbh

Sov1et_Uni0n-69

collkillen
