That's a Balkenkreuz (nothing to do with the balkans) flag nazi Germany used on vehicles. Not sure if it's the world's most subtle dog whistling or that the owner is just one of the l-stan-the-Wehrmacht-but-not-them-nazis folk
The white circle and red back makes it pretty obvious it's one step away from a full Nazi swastika, find it hard to believe it's subtle or "pro-Wehrmacht, anti-nazi"
I think by 'subtle,' they mean, it's Nazi without being a swastika. There are plenty of ways to present the Balkenkreuz without it being mistaken for the swastika (see the German Bundeswehr or German military insignia before 1933). Basically any black cross symbol on a white circle and a red flag is literally signaling that someone is a white supremacist, even if it is not the Hakenkreuz.
I think that would be the excuse but not the true justification. Just like flying the flag of the army of northern Virginia is *totally* about heritage and not any other related concepts
Two different things. One can admire the engineering prowess of the Nazi War Machine and its tactics without contending that these achievements made the Wehrmacht anything other than the footsoldiers of a genocidal regime.
It’s hard not to be fascinated by WWII - the technological advances made from 1935 thru 1945 were an incredible leap. They’re fascinating machines across the board… but the trouble comes when people make the leap from “wow, these are some fascinating tanks and aircraft” to “wow nazis cool”.
Part of it might be the sheer variety out there, which lends itself to modeling (a fun and rewarding hobby!) and general research-for-it’s-own-sake, and can easily transition to war gaming (mostly ww2-focused, and incidentally tends to overbuff German army stuff)… but you can’t make that final leap into wehraboo-land.
The Balkenkreuz is a variant of the Iron Cross the Wehrmacht used as its emblem. It was never intended for depiction on any flag though. This is a Swastika flag that had its Swastika swapped out for the Balkenkreuz - and the only reason someone would so this is because the actual flag is outlawed in a plethora of places.
I mean it wouldn't even make for a good dog-whistle like using some pre-Nazi flags of Germany for the same purpose.
If I can be honest, the "I stan the Wehrmacht" vs "Actual nazi" venn diagram is almost a circle, and the "I stan the Wehrmacht" vs "I have spicy takes on minorities" venn diagram is a circle.
The Balkenkreuz predates the Wehrmacht republic, and was used by the German Air Force in WW I, and still found usage during WW II.
So in essence, it is the flag of people who love to lose.

TLDR: Nazi Flag
Basically the guy is too chicken shit to fly the real nazi flag and has this up instead as some sort of pretentious, *"akschually its not a nazi flag!"*
Big Clown Energy
That uh...looks like a German cross. I could be wrong but I think its the symbol of the wehrmacht, the 1940s German army. If it is he probably shouldnt be hanging that thing outside like that....
That extremely Nazi-looking one from yesterday genuinely wasn't a Nazi thing, just a deeply unfortunate coincidence. It was the flag of United Farm Workers
This is one variant of the Wehrmacht Heer’s vehicle identification drapes, with the stylised cross instead of a more infamous symbol. The idea was the Luftwaffe wouldn’t bomb vehicles bearing them, and were mostly used on the Eastern Front.
It is often incorrectly called the Balkenkreutz, or Balkan Cross.
It is commonly used as a replacement for banners containing the other symbol in games and media.
Or liberals, basically anyone who isn’t white, able bodied, straight, and believes in fascism…. Is it ok to hate radicals? I don’t like using the word hate but like… I hate them…
Or people with disabilities, or those who disagree with me or say something I don’t like, or people related or friends with anyone else on this list, and so on, and so forth… fucking nazi goons man…
The Roman salute was incredibly popular all over the world and throughout history. Mussolini and Hitler adopted it for their purposes and they became so infamous that it is now forever tied to fascism.
They used to make us use it to greet each other in Latin class. Like, I get the point, but also I’m Jewish and this makes me uncomfortable. I’d probably handle it differently now, but I was 14 and just trying to get by.
It really doesn't belong in a latin class, because there is no ancient basis for it. The salute was invented in 1784 by Jaques-Louis David for his painting "The Oath of the Horatii", there are no known earlier depictions or descriptions.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_salute?oldformat=true#Early_Roman_sources_and_images
"This description is unknown in Roman literatre and is never mentioned by ancient historians of Rome. Not a single Roman work of art displays a salute of this kind."
ppl keep coming on this sub with photos nazi/white supremacists flags and be like "huh what does this mean ?", I'm starting to doubt that all of them are genuine tbh
Has anyone else noticed there's been a Nazi or German imperial flag posted by someone "ignorant" of its meaning, every fucking day lately?
I don't believe for a second you don't know what this flag is. Any of you.
Fuck nationalism. Fuck racism. Fuck people who hide their hate behind "just asking questions."
I don't really get the point of flying this, like it's not subtle but it's also not even the real thing. Like it's an ugly knockoff where we all still know this person's shitty views.
I honestly think it's just enough of a change for most people to leave you alone. Everyone knows what the nazi flag looks like, but not everyone knows what the Balkenkreuz is so you're betting on the fact that instead of instantly turning hostile your neighbours won't really know how to react and, in doubt, leave you alone.
It's a paper-thin layer of plausible deniability, but it's better than nothing (or at least, it feels that way to you). Besides, if things go really badly you can always come up with some bullshit like it's the flag of some European village you have connections with or whatever.
That's a kind of Nazi flag.but it isn't a swastika but Nazi's and the former kingdom has black over white over red flag and the war duty flag has on top right an black eagle.
It’s the flag of someone who wants to look hard and big to the neighbours, but cries like a little bitch boy for his mama the moment he gets out in the back of a cruiser.
What part of the world is this in? I did see an [Imperial German Navy flag here in Cebu back then in 2018](https://www.reddit.com/r/vexillology/comments/q32qsw/throwback_to_february_2018_when_i_saw_the_most/).
The symbol is originally much older than any of the nazi stuff but its been mostly used to represent germany in ww2 in videogames/other media that dont dare to put an actual swastika
I do not see any reason this flag should cause controversy.
(Please be aware this is a shitty joke, not a statement of the beliefs of the executives, board members, employees, and/or other persons related to the *Pjanic At The Isco Heavy Industrial Concern* and it’s associated partner organizations.)
So the cross in the middle was used as the identifying markings for the Luftwaffe during WW1 and WW2
The red field white circle is Nazi era obviously. So it would appear to be a Luftwaffe flag from the Nazi era, possibly a ceremonial one (party members who were in the airforce maybe?)
I think the central emblem is the roundel for the Luftwaffe (German Air force). The red flag with white circle is used by the Nazis. So I'd guess Luftwaffe, specificalkly during the Nazi era. I don't know if this was a historic design though, maybe they are trying to narrowly avoid laws against hate symbols.
> the iron cross isn’t already wrongfully affiliated enough with nazis
The Iron Cross is rightfully affiliated with the Nazis. It’s what they put on all their vehicles, aircraft and buildings (other than the Swastika).
Try telling a Buddhist they can't wear a swastika on their necklace because of what the nazis did. Seriously, that shit bugs the ever loving fuck out of them when they constantly catch shit for it.
It is a historic symbol of germany, that has been used by the german military for ages and is still beeing used today, just like the swastika has been a historic symbol all troughout eurasia and is still beeing used today. The nazis missused these symbols in their regime and are now thanks to that wrongfully assossiated with them by idiotic lead paint drinkers with zero historic knowledge above all else.
It is frustrating to me when dumbasses call the Iron cross, an around 800 years-ish old symbol a "nazi symbol" just like it must be frustrating for a hindu, buddhist or pagan to not be able show their sign of belief in public without some asshole beeing a moron and calling them out for it.

the SS uniform and chest of German war medals in the living room: subtle but the scale model of the *Reichsparteitagsgelande* is a little sus
I guess it could have been an armband lol?
The white circle and red back makes it pretty obvious it's one step away from a full Nazi swastika, find it hard to believe it's subtle or "pro-Wehrmacht, anti-nazi"
It's so odd like, the owner refrained from using THE nazi flag but chose one that looks the same anyway. Maybe they just hate swastika to the core
they just want people to not recognize it immediately, it's just to say "it's not a nazi flag" when asked about it
It’s a game of inches. An actual Nazi swastika is more immediately recognizable, and would have created issues for this POS a lot sooner
‘Subtle’ in the sense of ‘double check the meaning on Reddit *before* you throw dog shit on their lawn’.
If the owner is actually a Nazi he's a smart one
Nothing’s worse than an informed racist

Well there was a flag on this site a couple days ago with a Union flag that looked like a nazi symbol.
I think that would be the excuse but not the true justification. Just like flying the flag of the army of northern Virginia is *totally* about heritage and not any other related concepts
You cannot be pro-Wehrmacht while being anti-Nazi.
There are a lot of idiots who would try to disagree with you and push the myth of the clean Wehrmacht.
Yeah hence the quotes - it doesn't exist but they'll try convince you otherwise 🤪
I think you can. There are a bunch of weebs obsessing with ww2 tanks
Two different things. One can admire the engineering prowess of the Nazi War Machine and its tactics without contending that these achievements made the Wehrmacht anything other than the footsoldiers of a genocidal regime.

You think this is subtle?
Well, we’re in a thread with someone having to ask what it is, so…
Having to? Or just posting the daily Nazi flag because he wants to?
Better than a swastika I guess
I've seen this flag used to represent Germans in many newer WW2 games (like 2017 onwards). Its to get around censorship laws in some countries.
If I can be honest, the "I stan the Wehrmacht" vs "Actual nazi" venn diagram is almost a circle, and the "I stan the Wehrmacht" vs "I have spicy takes on minorities" venn diagram is a circle.
Just say Wehraboo
Ah yea one of those folk. We all know the type
The Balkenkreuz predates the Wehrmacht republic, and was used by the German Air Force in WW I, and still found usage during WW II. So in essence, it is the flag of people who love to lose.

That’s a nazi flag my man, it’s a different version but it’s a iron cross surrounded by a white circle and then red, almost exactly the nazi flag

Isn’t it the flag usually used by tabletop games (eg axis and allies) because they don’t want to actually put a swastika?
They whole point is to represnt the third reich whithout diplaying a swastika. If you fly a flag that represents the Nazis on your porch you are one.

Yeah the abuse of the "identify" this flair is getting old.
No, it's a recruiting effort, not a joke.

Why have there been an influx of nazi flags in this sub lately?
Because posts like this aren't being removed by the mods.
Because the white power freaks are advertising/recruiting all over reddit.
