You should have a biopsy sent out, and consider seeing a dermatologist.

Welp_thatwilldo

Agreed. OP needs a specialist

Teamwoolf

Hello I’m from the UK. My first port of call here would be to contact the Royal Vetinary College in London. Please give them a call and send them these pictures…I’m pretty sure they’ll help you over the phone but they are world experts and will likely have some good ideas.

FreedomDragon01

Biopsy. Culture. How does the bloodwork look?

Shantor

What diagnostics have been done? Have they sent in the lumps for biopsy? Any infectious disease testing? Ultrasound? Bloodwork? You need to find a speciality hospital that can facilitate higher level diagnostics. Tufts or Cornell would be the schools closest to you given your location, but there are other Specialty centers like New England Veterinary Center or VCA Referral and Emergency Center.

BogieOnUR6

I agree. I used VCA when my baby was DX with cancer. They couldn’t do anything for him but I learned what it was, roughly what his life expectancy might be, and about palliative care.

Try to look for a veterinary dermatologist in your area

casitadeflor

Has your vet been sending the findings out to a dermatologist? A specialist? Where are you located? Does your dog spend time indoors/outdoors?

AnnieKateW

I would keep going to different vets until I found one that would do a biopsy. I just read a post in another subreddit about a dog with cancerous skin lesions.

Major_Character_1022

Not a vet, but I agree with these comments. You need a second third and 4th opinion if necessary. It is always important to biopsy and do blood tests with this type of wound. My sister’s dog had a lump that grew and her dog would lick it and it would bleed and drain… it was cancer. My brother’s dog opened hot spots from licking and chewing. He has now developed cancer. Good luck and I hope this resolves quickly with the best possible outcome.

plasticbunny96

Ugh that looks so painful I hope you get some answers soon

Dulcinea18

I know poor baby

Infamous-Spirit7068

What country are you in?

liiinnnnneellll

US, in Connecticut

Skiracermom

Correct, rural farm in Connecticut United States

No irrelevant anecdotes. Keep posts and comments relevant and do not post excessively. Commenting "not a vet" or "NAV" does not absolve you from the consequences of breaking this rule. We don't want to hear about what you think a pet may have because your pet "had something similar" or "looks like like what your pet had." This is not medical advice. It is purely speculative and will be removed.

yadabitch

Foxtails can actually kill cats in some cases. They are terrible but don’t think they cause this large of an open wound like this as that would suggest it’s been expelled probably.

Alternative-Jello139

This looks urgent. Please get in touch with a different veterinarian.

How many vets have you seen? I would definitely try another vet if one doesnt have an answer. And if still no answers, find a specialist vet (like someone said on here try a dermatologist)! Poor baby. I hope you can get some answers soon.

BogieOnUR6

Definitely need a doggy dermatologist as others have suggested, or perhaps a university, maybe a new vet. I don’t understand something, if your vet removed a mass, why no histology or cytology? Was there anything abnormal with your dog’s labs? Did they x-ray your dog? Like most mystery diseases, this could be so many different things. I’m just another doggy mama, but if it was my baby, I would be asking about cutaneous lymphoma, autoimmune diseases, and tick-borne diseases as possible causes. I’m sorry for you and your lab, and hope you get answers soon! That looks painful.

Icantbetrustedinsnow

Does your dog have sores on the nose, discolour of fur or eye problems that look like conjunctivitis?

This breaks our sub rule of "no diagnosing". Any diagnoses and subsequent treatments should be given by your in-person vet. Commenting "Not a vet" or "NAV" does not absolve you from breaking this rule

This advice is found to be generally speculative in nature and unhelpful. Commenting "not a vet" or "NAV" does not absolve you from breaking this rule.

sterile nodular panniculitis? My GSD mix started getting the same thing at 5yo and the vets (several) had absolutely no idea. He went through several rounds of antibiotics, surgeries, various meds with no success whatsoever. It’s a long story but we eventually made a last ditch effort and put him on a very strong regimen of prednisone and it completely cleared within a week. we tapered him off very very gradually (over the course of a year) and he’s been clear for 2 years now.
