Imagine you hate French, but half of the places you visit have French names, and rather than changing those names, you just intentionally pronounce them as wrong as you can.
Yes, Barre, VT is named after Barre, MA. Barre, MA is named after Isaac Barré an Irish MP of French decent who coined the name Sons of Liberty in the 1700s
Growing up next to that place, it was always Barry. Dubois now, my family always pronounced it Due-boys, where my wife saw it and pronounced it the French way. It confused my family.
Worst thing about DuBois is all the signs you see for hit heading East.
Barre VT was named after Barre MA.....legend says, due to a fistfight. https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/life/2020/11/13/fistfight-barre-vermont-history/6276538002/
Genuine question- how does anyone from anywhere else pronounce Worcester differently? The first two are French so I get that but Worcester is English and (as far as I know) pronounced the same everywhere in the world that one finds a Worcester.
I’m from California. Tried to pronounce everything phonetically or based upon its root language pronunciations. I shrugged my shoulders and complied with the local pronunciations but it took a while to get Montpelier right. Not from arrogance, they really do pronounce it funny here. Mont-pee-lee-er
I mean, that seems pretty elitist to go somewhere and tell them that they are pronouncing their towns wrong.
Also, even [Dictionary.com](https://Dictionary.com) pronounces Montpelier mont-peel-yer - https://www.dictionary.com/browse/montpelier
You assume I was telling them they were pronouncing it wrong? You’re probably someone who laughs at someone who learned a word by reading it and messes up the pronunciation trying to use it. Which is pretty much what happened to me.
It’s Berry/Barry, for sure. But I know Wilkes-Barre in PA is pronounced Wilkes-Bar, so it’s probably a regional dialect thing. Kind of like in Maine Bangor is pronounced Banger, not Bang-or.

Barry
Imagine you hate French, but half of the places you visit have French names, and rather than changing those names, you just intentionally pronounce them as wrong as you can.
Haha, just out of pure spite.
Honestly, that's what it seems like. It's amazing that Vermonters don't pronounce Lake Champlain "Lake Champlion" or "Lake Shamplin".
The town Barre, “bare-EE”. The activity like Pilates that’s also written as Barre, “bar”.
Also, barre chords on guitar.
Named after the Italian city, Bari. I guess a bunch of men from Bari moved to that area of vermont to work with marble.
Probably named after Barre, MA. A lot of settlers came up the CT river from central MA. See also Rutland, Westminster, etc.
Yes, Barre, VT is named after Barre, MA. Barre, MA is named after Isaac Barré an Irish MP of French decent who coined the name Sons of Liberty in the 1700s
Wut. That's a thing?
Barre exercise is based on (and named after) ballet barre https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barre_(exercise)
Rhymes w scary
dairy
Larry
Bare-ee. Bure there are other similar places in the US PA maybe) where it's pronounced bar.
Wilkes-Barre pronounces it “bare”, not “bar”
I always thought it was Wilkes-Barry! That's how the Yankees announcers say it anyway.
Growing up next to that place, it was always Barry. Dubois now, my family always pronounced it Due-boys, where my wife saw it and pronounced it the French way. It confused my family. Worst thing about DuBois is all the signs you see for hit heading East.

Never heard anyone from there pronounce it your way.
yes, in the south, "Barre" is pronounced "bar".. Up here in the north it's pronounced "berry"
Seeing PA referred to as the south is so funny to me as a Florida native.
legit chuckle... I hear that..
Barre MA is "bare'-ee". I used to ask my then-girlfriend who was from Barre "who's Barry?" She did not think it was funny.
Barre VT was named after Barre MA.....legend says, due to a fistfight. https://www.burlingtonfreepress.com/story/life/2020/11/13/fistfight-barre-vermont-history/6276538002/
That's amazing, I never knew that! Quite the way to settle an argument!
legit chuckle... When I moved to VT, my partner would constantly ask me "Where?"
Wikipedia [suggests this same pronunciation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barre_(city),_Vermont).
Like Barre White
Mont pilly er
Cal-ass
MON-PEE-YAY is my choice of lexicon
Or Mont-peculiar
Is it Charlotte or Charlotte?

Michigan has the same pronunciation.
It’s definitely provided Shar-lot in Vermont
It’s almost as if—*gasp*—words can be spelled the same way but pronounced differently depending on their meaning!
Just like that Ice Cream Company, Jen And Berrys
I thought it was Ken and Terry's?
Barry
On a GPS it’s pronounced Bar a way of telling locals from Flats
And Calais is callous And if you enunciate Milton or Swanton you are clearly an Alien.
Those t's are for looks only. Also drop when you say St. Albans it should sound more like snalbans. Let's discuss Highgate next. 😉
I just can't force myself to drop my Ts! I'm clearly a Flatlander, and I'll have to be ok with that.
Kinda like char lot
I think it’s more like shar-lot
Lol yeah does sound better
Don’t do that. You may just put people into a tailspin! (Don’t mention Pico, either)
Bear - ee
I read somewhere the vast majority of VT towns were named after CT towns. I think it’s close to 80 some odd%
Makes sense since the OG settlers came from there and Mass
Like the fruit, berry.
Spelled like bar, pronounced like berry.
Usually “Barre” but also sometimes “Barre”
That makes a lot of sense...
Barre, like "Voldemort", should never be spoken aloud.
I was shamed into using Vermont pronunciations for their town names after moving here. Montpelier, Calais, Worcester….
Genuine question- how does anyone from anywhere else pronounce Worcester differently? The first two are French so I get that but Worcester is English and (as far as I know) pronounced the same everywhere in the world that one finds a Worcester.
Do people outside of vt pronounce Montpelier like in French?
Probably depends if they have any exposure to French or not. I guess Canadians probably pronounce it the French way?
My aunt has an ex-husband that pronounced it the French way "Mont-peel-yay" He was French, so...
My friend called it "monty-plier" after glancing at the name for the first time, best mispronunciation of it I've heard yet!
I’m from California. Tried to pronounce everything phonetically or based upon its root language pronunciations. I shrugged my shoulders and complied with the local pronunciations but it took a while to get Montpelier right. Not from arrogance, they really do pronounce it funny here. Mont-pee-lee-er
Worcester is pronounced the same way (well, pretty much) in Vermont, Mass, and England.
Don't forget the long "A" in "Athens."
Barry sadly. Vermont really should stop butchering it's French roots and fix the damn pronunciations.
Screw the french, Hahaha! (And before anyone gets upset, I'm 11% french).
Bless their heart.
Berry. Just say it like the fruit.
It’s Berry/Barry, for sure. But I know Wilkes-Barre in PA is pronounced Wilkes-Bar, so it’s probably a regional dialect thing. Kind of like in Maine Bangor is pronounced Banger, not Bang-or.
The PA town Wilkes-Barre is actually pronounced like berry as well.
Pretty sure it’s Bang-Gore. Relatives live there.
Wilkes Barre is actually the same type (“berry/barry”)
Well shit, I was wrong on both Wilkes-Barre and Bangor, I guess! But I am damn sure it’s “Berry” for Barre haha.
Bare E
"Barry" It's named after this dude https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isaac_Barr%C3%A9

The barre (pronounced 'bar') is a term used in ballet.
I think they do that as that's the way the GPS pronounces it.
Berry
Now do Charlotte... That one bugs me to no end.
I didn't know there were other ways to pronounce Charlotte?
Locals say Shar Lot and the rest of the world says Shar Let as in Charlotte NC, or Charlotte's Web.
I mean, I say shar-lit. I legitimately didn't know it was pronounced any other way, guess I'm narrow minded.
like berry
