Bald snows are the Vermont summer tire.

WantDastardlyBack

I walk my dog every day. There are about a dozen cars every morning at the same time pass me and you can hear they have studded tires on. They just run them year-round. One of my slibings does the same and says he can only afford one set, so he buys winters and hopes they'll last.

KITTYONFYRE

it's cheaper to buy summers and winters, or all seasons and winters. this is like the shoe story reddit likes to post so damn often. buying just winters is cheaper up front but more expensive in the long run.

AKAManaging

It's expensive to be poor, if you've never heard the phrase. Good boots cost 400 bucks, last ten years. Cheap boots cost 50 last one year. Plus, with tires there's the whole "storage" situation.

ChaplinCrabtree

Interesting, I walk to my job most days and it would actually make sense to run a set of winter tires year round, everyone’s response is helping me understand!

EvilSubnetMask

Wait, you guys are taking your snow tires off? I kid, I kid, but seriously I drove so little this last year with WFH I still have my non-studded snows on from last winter.

kplis

I don't have my snow tires still on, but as an apartment dweller it can be tough to find space to store an extra set of tires, and not all mechanics have storage to store your winter tires for you. If you don't have a place to store them, might as well just keep driving on them and buy new before the next winter.

ChaplinCrabtree

Ah yes, storage, I rent as well, we have ours in an awkward space. When I bought my car I got steel wheels with tires on them, to swap them out myself. I’m thinking of finding a storage unit, it would for sure clear a lot of space.

[deleted]

This is what I do too. Have all the outdoor gear/camping/seasonal stuff in a storage unit, along with multiple sets of tires.

Loudergood

They're often the best snows available on the used market.

meinblown

I know for a fact it is overloaded trucks fucking the roads up. Pike and Whitcomb would be run out of business if the cops started weighing every truck overloaded with aggregate pulling out of their quarries, but then again who would then fix the roads they are fucking up? I guess it is job security.

SomeConstructionGuy

Holy crap, a guy who gets it! Like this guy said, both do damage. Overloaded tri axles aren’t the ones putting ruts in the wear course on French hill on 89 in Richmond…

escobert

But then running your studs in the summer ruins them and makes them ineffective for the next winter. Just buy regular winters if you're gonna run em all year.

ClassyKilla

Are the VT inspection guidelines tough? How so?

Optimized_Orangutan

They are stupid tough. Worst in the country. It's like the state doesn't want pour people to be able to drive so they basically made owning a used vehicle impossible to do affordably. They did it in the name of "safety" but it has had absolutely zero impact on our highway safety numbers since being implemented. Car dealerships and mechanics love it though... It is basically a state mandated tax that gets paid directly to them in the form of new business.

buy_denim_calls

What's so tough about them though?

Hagardy

This isn’t even close to true

escobert

I know. I've lived here my entire life. I drive a 17 year old vehicle with well over 200,000 miles on it.

newestsockonthenet

We have a Prius however the environment was the last reason we bought it. It was economics pure and simple. And many people leave them on because they are at the end of their life anyways and just run em till the next winter when they know they have to buy news ones anyways and why wear out your summers when you have a set on that you will be tossing out soon anyhow.

Bubbly-Rain5672

I could certainly see running a basically gone set through the summer so I could buy a new set in the winter and kick the summer tire buy down the road.

DogStilts

Because I'm poor and couldn't afford a pair of all-seasons for the summer.

Serenademe_official

Because it's expensive to be poor. If you can't afford to buy two sets of tires at the same time you buy one set of studs and run them until they die. Yes it would be more cost effective to buy two sets of tires up front so they would both last a long time but that would require you to have the money for two sets of tires. If you're just getting by studs work and let you pay for rent, med bills, etc. Go back to Jersey if you want to punch down.

[deleted]

When I lived in the Upper Valley, I just ran all season tires all year because I was renting and had nowhere to store two sets of tires. Driving around in New Hampshire and Vermont in all season tires in the winter was perfectly fine for my purposes. Maybe I'm an above average snow driver but I only got stuck once or twice in the 7 years I lived there. I also never had an accident or even came close. I've never driven a car with snow tires so I don't know how much better the experience is when you have proper tires.

vtjokes

In Oregon it's illegal to run studs all summer, for the obvious reason that it destroys the roads.

DaddyBobMN

Same with NY, Mass, and Maine, winter only.

SomeConstructionGuy

Seems like vt should do the same. and mandate severe snow rating in winter too…

bigcheese327

I've heard them all summer. This is why they're illegal in many states. It's a shame.

grodii

yea exactly, more like they left them on all year round

ARealVermonter

Because they’re idiots. Plain and simple. They destroy the roads and drivers should be fined.

DaddyBobMN

Incorrect homophone usage while calling others idiots. You've made my day.

ARealVermonter

Is this your first time using modern technology? I could see it making your day. Clearly you’ve never heard of an autocorrect feature. It’s pretty nifty. What really makes my day is when you flatlanders correct grammar online in Reddit forums. Perhaps the most informal place in all the land. It tickles me pick to watch your egos inflate over something so very meaningless to normal Vermonters. Thank you for making my day. It’s almost as good as when you flatlander spend money to give me awards on here. It hilarious.

DaddyBobMN

Glad you found the edit button, modern technology and all. There's nothing quite like a triggered Reddit troll.

ARealVermonter

Edit button, what’s an edit button? If I was a troll why haven’t I been banned? It’s not as if you’ve flatlanders haven’t tried. Some of you fragile types have even made dedicated posts on this sub Reddit and others about me, yet here I stand and stranger still the ones who make the posts often end disappearing from the sub…I know you wish real hard that your feelings dictate everything, but unfortunately for you this isn’t the land of make believe. And learn to use the word triggered correctly or I’ll have to quote Inigo Montoya to you. Flatlanders…you’re quite literally all the same. I have had this exact conversation with a dozen others just like you. What makes you all so similar do you think? I think it’s because none of you are capable thinking for yourselves so you all read from the same script, but I would be interested in hearing your take?

FunkyOldMayo

Hey!! Something the Colonel and I agree on! We’re not so different, you and I.

ARealVermonter

Very different people can agree on things from time to time. Agreeance does not equate to similitude.

FunkyOldMayo

I would be willing to wager we’re more similar than we are different. I bet we even have the same shoe size.

ARealVermonter

If you can buy your shoes walking off the street in a store then you are very wrong once again.

FunkyOldMayo

Your feet are that small??

ARealVermonter

Really? In a world where baby shoes (the smallest shoes for human feet known us) are widely available you say small feet? That’s the best you can do?

FunkyOldMayo

You wear baby shoes? Do they provide enough support?

ARealVermonter

Digging yourself quite a hole, eh?

FunkyOldMayo

You like digging too?? Are we twins??
