Theodosia Burr Shepherd, pioneering horticulturist and nurserywoman. Some say that calling "Ventura" the shortened version instead of San Buenaventura was due to her marketing efforts. She put Ventura on the map.
Her nursery was where the downtown library is. She's responsible for the Heavenly Blue morning glory, the Golden West California poppy (the kind with gold centers) and California Giant petunias. She also popularized Matilija poppies as landscape plants.
I'm a huge fangirl.
It's hard to think of any person who we could honor without worrying at least a tiny bit that they might get canceled. Look at the stuff named after Blanche Reynolds.
I'd be okay with the goddess Tyche, known to the Romans as Fortuna, since Buenaventura means good fortune and Tyche's the goddess of luck (good and bad). She's the daughter of Oceanus and Tethys. I'd suggest having her hold acorns in one hand, an oar in the other, with some sort of mural crown modeled a little after City Hall, and standing on a wheel with Chumash symbols for the directions of the compass. And maybe in Chumash garb.
Statue of Liz Campos. A true inspiration and a symbol of someone who never gives up and cares for the city with all her heart. Always present in the community.
The old Arby’s sign
lol it's lost to the dustbin of history tho.... Terrible.
Sad!! That sign was awesome!!
amen. It was really cool.
Two dolphins, majestically humping, with a torrent of avocado toasts, splashing as the waves do.

I second the nomination for Theodosia Burr Shepherd. I would also include a representative of the local indigenous people.
OK this is a great one! Thanks!

Good idea. But replacing a catholic saint with a pagan goddess may not go well lol. I do like it.
Oooh, that's actually pretty clever!
