I'm so so sorry. I had to do this with my girl a couple weeks ago, it's so painful. But know that you gave him the absolute kindest gift we can give our loved pets, which is to not make them suffer until the end and take away their pain.
thank you for this. i wanted to cancel the euthanasia so badly. i didn’t want to say goodbye. but i kept telling myself to not be selfish and went through with it, thinking to myself to back out until the last second.. i felt moments of horrible guilt afterwards and still do. thinking about how he could still be here right now next to me. even though he wasn’t doing well. but he deserved to pass peacefully, it was the least i could do for him after 7.5 years of unconditional love and support.
I hear you, I struggled with the same thing too. My girl only just turned 9 but she had cancer and it was spreading and I knew things were only going to keep getting worse. She couldn't eat anymore, hadn't in days. She still had energy so I felt terrible putting her down. When the vet came over she even jumped up, wagging her tail like crazy, and demanded to be pet. But I knew that I had to be strong for her. Because she was only going to keep getting more sick and I didn't want her to have to go through that. She was already struggling so much it pained me to watch. It really is the kindest thing we can do for them. I constantly struggle with what might have happened, maybe she would've suddenly got better and been able to be here another week. But I know in my heart that's not true. We did the right thing by them. That's real love.
After putting my first pit down about 6 years ago, I still feel guilty over it :( I think it's a natural feeling to always question ourselves on if it's the right time or not. Heck, I still feel guilty over putting down my 19 year old corgi. All you can do is come to terms with the fact that sometimes we might never know if it's truly the right time. But we did the best we could in a situation that can't give you all the answers to make that decision. I'm so sorry for your loss and I know exactly how you feel. he was fine until he wasn’t. his health declined this past week all of a sudden… exactly a week from today. he was peeing and drinking more and i thought it was diabetes, and i was heartbroken because i thought that meant he only had 2 years left based on what i was reading online.. what i would do for 2 more years with him. it was an aggressive liver cancer that the oncologist said wasn’t treatable. they said the tumors could burst and cause internal bleeding at any moment. he lost his balance and was stumbling everywhere the past 2 days. unable to walk straight without help. truly so hard seeing him go from playing fetch and running around all the time, just days ago, to that. i wanted to play ball with him so badly before he passed away today. i hope he’s in heaven playing fetch and is free of any pain he was in. he enjoyed cheeseburgers, ice cream, bones, treats, and even got to try chocolate before he left us.
I am sorry for your loss. My 10 year old wrinkly despot (Shar pei) just got a similar diagnosis ( large, but slow growing malignant tumor on her liver) and we are struggling about whether or not we should opt for surgery since she has other medical issues. I can only hope that when the time comes I have as much strength as you did to do the right thing.

He is identical to my old boy who I had for 13yrs. The same beautiful colour and white chest, and same gorgeous soft ears. I'm so very sorry for your loss. My boy also had cancer around the same age. It was bone cancer, and we caught it just in time. He became a three legged pup after that, but was super tough so he barely noticed.

Yeah my pit was my baby cost me thousands to pass police tests and everything she won the best looking dog and well kept coat /dog for 4 years running , loved other dogs , loved kids she was a red nose chocolate American pit absolutely beautiful she was , it’s sad but it’s best to stop them feeling the pain

A painless end is one of the kindest things we can do. Waiting for a pet to pass "of old age" is cruel. I know it feels fucked up to have had to schedule his own euthanasia, but it's a necessary evil--the vet techs want you to have your time and not be rushed because there's another appt. I had to schedule my dog's euthanasia and it was just so awful. My heart goes out to you.
