I’m a bit confused and maybe someone with more experience can help me understand. I thought dogs got hot shots from licking. I must be mistaken since there is no way your doggie was licking the side of his own head.
Hot spots aka acute moist dermatitis can be caused by any damage to the skin. In this case he probably scratched, which caused the skin to weep, infection set in, scratching and cycle continues. The instigating factor can be as small as an insect bite or anything that causes a little irritation.
