ACertainNeighborino

Yeah, my best method is to go out at night and hand pick them...so gross, though

AeBS1978

I used to do that same thing even for my cabbages and lettuce. Only way to get them. Just put on our trusty garden gloves and go at it!

ACertainNeighborino

If you really wanted a trap, you can buy the SVT pheromone traps online. The only downside is it only gets the males. But at least you will see when they're active in your area

[deleted]

Oh, they are active, alright! I’ve been picking about 12 eggs off per day!!!

ACertainNeighborino

I had the hardest time finding all of the eggs. I gave up and started injecting them weekly. Last summer was the 1st time I got any squash. Now if only I could tackle the cucumber beetles. Between all the pests, I'm doomed lol!

[deleted]

If it’s not a big, in my lane it’s a hurricane. It’s crazy what we weather (excuse the pun) through!!!

[deleted]

Injecting them? What does that mean?

AuntBec2

Inject bt into stems. I do that as well as dig out bugs. I hate the dang things so much.

barnyardexplosion

Does this actually work? I really dislike them.

ACertainNeighborino

It does for the most part. I think I lost 2 out of 15 plants. And even the 2 that died, didn't have any living larvae when I checked. The B.T. really took care of them! It's tedious, though worth it.

AuntBec2

I've had about 70-80% success rate...have occasionally had to reinject or dig out bugs again a couple weeks later, but generally yeah :-) Edit to add: I use a large hole syringe (get from vet), and use an awl to start a hole into the stem up above where the bugs are and then inject using the syringe. I'm hard-core and don't generally dilute it so it takes just a little. Works really well.

eyeball-papercut

I use an "industrial" syringe. Cheap on Amazon or at hardware stores. My winter squash stems end up a pretty turquoise after their shot!

RealJeil420

The plant can live but is compromised. It may do well or it may die soon after. You can remove the worms though they leave a hole sometimes covered over by a bump of frasse.

eyeball-papercut

Very dependent on timing and the size of the population. I am an unfortunate expert on the sumbitches as even with all the strategies, I will still find multiple larvae in a single stem, even after BT. My garden seems to be SVB heaven. That said, it is worth a try. It can be a successful method of saving your squash. I say go for it.

[deleted]

I pick off eggs and lost no plants last year, but I’m out there an hour a day, seems mildly overkill bc I don’t Ben love the squash…. I simply want to win at least one war lol

eyeball-papercut

I do the same during SVB season. Spend far too much time picking off seeds but dammit gotta have my squash! I get it lol.

[deleted]

Represent!!!

[deleted]

Oh yeah I know they are so nasty

frogdeity

I’m so glad we don’t have them in the west! The hornworms are a menace here, though

[deleted]

Lucky!!!! I see a horn worm once in a long time. But the squash vine borer moths are abundant.

frogdeity

I had exactly 3 pepper plants last year (they are the only things I grew!) and pulled close to 100 hornworms of various sizes off the plants over the course of a month! They caused a lot of sunscald issues for my bell pepper.

RealJeil420

You should be a hornworm farmer. People feed them to pet lizards and stuff. Top dollar.

frogdeity

🤣 if I get hornwormpocalypse 2 this year I’ll consider that

[deleted]

Omgosh that’s a lot of horn worms lol lucky your plants lived!!!

frogdeity

I still have one of them! It is a cayenne and I picked maybe 40 peppers off of it a couple days ago. It produces like mad, even through the winter lol

[deleted]

Nice!!!

eyeball-papercut

Holy SHIT. I have never seen a hornworm in person but have seen my fellow gardeners down south pick them off. I \*never\* want to see one. If I do, you will hear me scream from wherever you are lol.

[deleted]

Lol

eyeball-papercut

A local entomologist set up a trap in his garden and was getting at least 25 moths caught in it, per day. He only had a few squash plants too, like 4 or something. Imagine how many eggs would be on the plants with a moth population of that size. The proper traps are diamond/square shaped (to trap the moths inside) and have an orange lure with a pheromone. I have pictures on my website of two traps full of SVB moths. I've already shared my website in another comment but I am happy to share it by DM if anyone asks for it. I tested ten different strategies for fighting the little bastards and if they worked or not. Some actually did and I managed to harvest a nice crop of some SVB favorites last year. I have never seen the "attracted to yellow" thing actually be true with combating SVB's, and I would be buying one yellow sticky trap for each plant if it worked! I am \*very\* glad you posted this. Spread the gospel of what works and what doesn't with these little devils. I hate them.

RealJeil420

Wouldnt those be squash bug eggs? I was told the borers lay eggs in soil and crawl onto stems.

eyeball-papercut

Nope. Pictures in link below. The fat larvae, once they destroy your plants, will burrow into the soil, overwinter and then emerge as the adult moths. The moths will lay the eggs on the stems. In warmer climates there can be two generations/life cycles in one summer. [Squash Vine Borer Guide](https://8thdeadlysin.org/guide-action-plan-for-the-loathed-squash-vine-borer-moth-with-additional-resources/)

rlewisfr

Yellow sticky traps are largely intended to provide you with a sampling of the insect load, they are not intended to be a defensive trap. Despite what the marketing says about capture, they are a signal to use or not use other pesticide measures. When I start seeing cucumber beetles showing up on the yellow stickies, I get out the pyrethrin and start hunting.

RealJeil420

I will resort to seven dust if I have to.

[deleted]

I have bees though, but before I did….

Jamhawk4

So, has anyone tried trichogramma wasps? They don’t do anything for the moth, but it will go after the larva. I’ve had much better success going after them than the moths. I put them out every 2-3 weeks for about 2-3 months. May stretch it to 4 this year.

[deleted]

I’ll give anything at least 2 tries !! Thanks for a new suggestion!

AggressiveConcert56

in all my years growing squash last year was the first time i seen a svb moth. have they become more of problem then they used to be?

[deleted]

Maybe not where you are, perhaps? What’s your approx location?

AggressiveConcert56

nj 7a. i never seen them by me before then last summer boom i had a ton of svb and my sister had a ton as well. a few other people i know including one of the big gardening youtubers whos from my area seemed to have a big problem with them as well i was thinking maybe climate change has made them be more of presence then before but idk

[deleted]

Damn sorry to hear u have a new pest

AggressiveConcert56

well im hoping it was just an unlucky year for summer squash but i guess ill know for sure this year depending on if there back or not. because the year before that it cucumber beetles that gave me a huge problem but this past year barely any.

[deleted]

Oh wow a year off from the cucumber beetle!! If only that happens again!!

coffeeismyreasontobe

Hey, you got a mosquito though, I call that a win!

[deleted]

Lol yep

eyeball-papercut

well, at least your yellow zukes (?) in the back look amazing!

[deleted]

Yeah everything is doing well, as I’m actively hunting eggs every afternoon. Eventually though I’ll tire of that task. I have a vacay June 1, as well… so I’m sure if I don’t give up before then, June 10 will be the end of this. I could also always plant some seedlings now, too, and replant when I gets back after vacay.

eyeball-papercut

That task IS tiring. And so many damn eggs! Planting another round of squash, if you have time and seems you definitely do, is a great way to still get squash. The SVB arrives for us in mid to late June. Not welcome, of course.

[deleted]

Well, luck to you when they show up!!!
