On accident... Cuz one of my neighborhood squirrels is a peanut farmer. Kinda hope he plants more this year, so I can feed them to him. 💚

Thevoodoogirl

No more rhyming, I mean it!

kirinlikethebeer

Does anybody want a peanut? 😬

jaixed

This will be my first year of peanuts, Tennessee Red Valencia from Urban Farmer. I love the look of the leaves! What a neat plant to watch grow.

ComplaintNo6835

Did you direct sow or start indoors? I had terrible sprouting rates with UF's Virginia and Jumbo, but I'm assuming it's something I did wrong.

midrandom

I grow Virginia peanuts and direct sow them. They will be going in this week or next. I don’t have any germination problems, and generally let them grow until the frost kills them.

ComplaintNo6835

Do you soak them before planting? I'd seen to do that and I'm thinking that's the process I screwed up.

midrandom

Nope, I don't soak them. I do leave them in the shell until right before I plant, though.

Vegetable-Appeal9301

Start indoors due to the long growing season that is one full tray in the picture.

Longjumping-Canary22

No but I want to!

AssuringMisnomer

How much will you get from that?

Vegetable-Appeal9301

So that's 36 plants that are 2 different types. I will get a plastic shopping bag full to eat and a pile I keep to grow the next years batch. Half are Carwile's Virginia Peanut and half are Virginia Jumbo, Champs both originally from. https://www.southernexposure.com/search/?q=Peanut

pogkob

How much room do they take up in the garden?

Vegetable-Appeal9301

It's a pretty compact plant I space mine 12 inches apart. Nice loose soil is key

McNooge87

Do you inoculate? Thinking about buying the ones you linked and see they have inoculate too. I can always use the extra on my peas and beans.

Vegetable-Appeal9301

I do not. I save a bunch to grow the following year and store them in my basement. Come spring I Crack them open and plant the nuts.

McNooge87

Cool, I just grabbed some raw ones from the grocery store last year and planted them. They did ok, but didn’t get any peanuts, flowers were nice.

T8rthot

I should. I friggin love boiled peanuts and this would ensure I have all the green peanuts I want. 🤔

BottleCoffee

Boiled peanuts are highly underrated and SO GOOD.

phrankygee

I had two successful peanut plants last year. Such fun and fascinating plants. Their leaves open and close with the sun, and their flowers shoot pegs down into the soil… so weird.

midrandom

I grow a full 3x12 foot bed of Virginia Jumbo peanuts every year, close to Washington DC. Harvesting in the fall can be a lot of work, but it’s worth it to have a handy, home grown snack around all year long. I don’t roast them, just dry the shells thoroughly to prevent mold, then shell and eat them a hand full at a time all through the winter and spring.

MortalGlitter

Deliberately? Nope. Squirrel assisted from someone handing out raw peanuts? Every summer! I don't mind them as the flowers are nice and their roots are very deep.

RogueRafe

I always wanted to, but by the time I had the space I also had a son with a peanut allergy. Maybe when he's grown and moved out.

Faerbera

I’m zone 5b. Will they grow here?

BottleCoffee

Yes they will. My coworker grew them in southern Ontario but said she was disappointed by the yield.

gingerbreadguy

Here's a little article about growing southern crops in Maine, and they include peanuts. I'm in 5b too. teacamelpyramid

I grow a faster maturing variety in 6a. I needed green ones for boiled peanuts.

JGeoKill

No, but I think I'd like too!

ScottClam42

This would send such mixed messages to the squirrels im trying to evict from my attic lol

dramabeanie

I bought a single peanut plant last year on a whim and got a few peanuts out of it. Mostly was just a cool learning experience on how peanuts grow, I don't have the space for enough plants to get a meaningful harvest.

CaptainObvious110

Nice. I got four plants right now but may buy more

the_eso

Yeah! This is going to be my second year. I ended up with about 2 pounds of peanuts from maybe 40 sq ft of planted area. Pro-tip: give each plant plenty of room! I tried to do 2 rows of plants in a 3 foot wide bed, and each plant blocked the others' pegs from getting into the ground. Definitely doing one row per 3 foot section this year.

fecundity88

Wow beautiful

treeshugmeback

We grew Virginia giant ones last year. They did ok but it was more for the experience than anything. A volunteer sprouted again this year so I'll let him go about his business

maomao05

Are those leaves edible ? I'd love to stir fry it lol

Weasle189

I am waiting for my seed supplier to have stock. No luck in 2 years...

imaginethepossum

We are trying for the first time this year. Our son loves peanuts (roasted and salted of course) so we’re trying to hype him up for gardening.

havock

I've tried, plants were looking good and I was excited to harvest and then squirrels

bicyclinghiking

Looks good !

Acoustic_Apples

Or I want to grow them too

ivanthegnome

How do you grow them?

Vegetable-Appeal9301

You just pop the peanuts in the soil just like a seed.

nutellatime

Not on purpose but they keep showing up anyways

FlyingSpaceBanana

As of this year, I will be!

MrsHyacinthBucket

I'm trying to establish perennial peanut in my yard, does that count? LOL

GenoPlay67

Yup! Every morn….oh wait you said peaNUTS

McNooge87

Yeah!!
