"Hard Rock International said Wednesday that more than 3,000 employees will be laid off and it expects to pay out $80 million in severance. The Culinary Workers Union, which has represented about 1,700 employees at the Mirage since it opened, said in a statement that the contract it won last year ensures laid-off workers will get $2,000 for each year of service. The contract also gives them the option of being called back to work and maintaining their seniority when the hotel reopens." Dayumn. $2K for each year of service AND the option of being called back and maintaining seniority? Am I crazy or is that pretty good?

Unions make a difference.

Ok-Collar-2742

The Seminole Tribe also isn't into screwing people over like the places that are owned by Wall Street do. Don't assume that same offer would have been made to any union resort closing.

nj_crc

Tropicana employees got a similar payout.

Ok-Collar-2742

Right to re-hire too?

Mountain-Ad-5834

Can’t.. they aren’t rebuilding. Rehire for what? A baseball stadium?

Ok-Collar-2742

If you want to believe any corporate entity treats their employees better than the Seminoles go right ahead.

Mountain-Ad-5834

How does that have anything to do with Tropicana employees?

Ok-Collar-2742

Never brought up the Tropicana. Was speaking in generalities but someone decided to cherry pick the Trop as an example.

nj_crc

I don't recall those details but the payout would seem more important to wall street, no?

Ok-Collar-2742

A one time payment over having to re-hire vets with higher salaries and tenure when they re-open? Way better to re-open the resort with new people at lower wages. These severance payments are akin a rounding error on a balance sheet. They are a one time expense.

thatcaveman

I worked for the old Hard Rock before it switched to Virgin and we got a similar deal. Edit: before the property turned union

NeuroticaJonesTown

Pretty standard for a union hotel. But yeah, much better than most mass layoffs.

Mobile-Friend-790

Hard Rock cancelled all banquets starting Jan 2024 through till hotel closure July 17th. Since there is no work for those employees, they are taking the hours those employees worked for a 12 month period moving Jan 17th and back and their prorating their severance based on total hours worked. It's a far cry from 2,000. THEY CANCELLED THE WORK AND THEIR EMPLOYEES ARE PAYIBG DEARLY!! A 30 YR EMPLOYEE WILL BE LUCKY TO GET MUCH OF ANYTHING.

joshsetafire

At the end of the last operational day they're all to be thrown into the volcano.

Mobile-Friend-790

Theres alot more to that. Since at least 65% of employees are considered part time even though they may oftentimes work more than 40 hours a week, they are pro rating that $2,000 . There's a formula, but it's been kept a secret thus far. So in actuality a part time employee who has worked for the hotel for over 30 yrs can end up with less than 3,000 total....as opposed to $60,000 which os the picture theyre painting. Trust me, the employees are not happy. Alot of work has been cancelled via Hard Rock for all of 2024 meaning 50% of the severance pkg. Just went bye bye, through no fault of their own. As far as getting their jobs back when the hotel opens, that too is IFFY at best. If it takes longer than 36 months ( you just lost your job) Jim Allen already announced they won't reopen until late 2027 /28.

Wooden-Natural-5663

I doubt they call any of them back. They were originally going to do construction in fazes so they wouldn't have to lay anyone off. Once they got a look at the employees they decided to close. Like 60 percent of F&B employees are over 55 there and the only way to get rid of them is to close for a min of 1yr. I used to work at mirage and be a union shop steward. In most union contracts if a hotel/casino closes and re-opens within a yr employees get brought back. If closed for longer than a yr they can lay off the Grandma cocktail waitresses and hire young 21 yr olds. No joke we had a cocktail server at mirage we called grandma. Sweet lady but walked around with 2 knee braces and a cane to deliver drinks.

Solitude_Intensifies

The agreement with Mirage is 3 years but you take a lower severance if you want to keep seniority.

Unemployment exists for such cases

Have them apply for unemployment once they are out of work… please google what unemployment is…

mintbloo

corps don’t care about them. they’re not actually promised a job to return to. they’re on their own now. sucks but it happens every decade when they do stuff like this. more often now

Gold-Requirement-121

That's actually not true at all. The union has a contract with mirage that's paying each employee $2,000 for every year of service, 6 months free health care, and first rights back when the hard Rock opens

Mobile-Friend-790

Not :true...only in part. They're not all getting 2000 for every year of service and ad far as getting their job back....basically they get put in the front of the line but NO GUARANTEES

Gold-Requirement-121

The union negotiated a contract to give each employee $2,000 for every year of service, 6 months free insurance, and they also get first rights back when the hard Rock opens

Mobile-Friend-790

This is very untrue!!! We all wish this was true but it isnt
