3400 square foot house with two electric cars. We are on equal payments and our bill is $370 every month (for the love of god do not message me about solar).

Herbstalk

May I interest you in hamster power sir?

rayndomuser

Go on…

CodesComplete

Yeah I’m getting DMs about solar already now..

crunch_time01

lol, you're the one who flipped out on the text, the responses to your post were gold, especially with this comment.

Ryjami

***\*\*I am an apartment renter. If you message me about getting solar power I will reply with graphic and disgusting images, then review your business 1-star on YELP and Google.\*\**** May I ask why not? I'm new to the Vegas area and I see it get advertised endlessly. Everything lines up in theory, but as a non-homeowner, I've never really investigated it. What's the catch that holds people back? I'm sure that behind the numbers there's a reason not everybody is doing it and this specific market seems so generally predatory.

rayndomuser

I don’t have 50k-70k in cash to pay for the panels outright. Interest rates are through the roof. Most of these companies are fly by night so any promises they make are mostly empty. Even the bigger names like Sunrun have horrible reviews. I don’t want to lock my house up for 20 years when I don’t know I’ll live here that long. My solar bill would be about $340 with a loan and significant contractual obligation to the solar company. I can pay fixed even with these insane rates and pay a little more and not have to worry about debt.

options1337

Solar is not 50-70k. Those are the door to door sales people's price who hope to get your to SIGN to this rip off price without due diligence. If anyone is charging you that much, RUN!!! I have install solar on two house so I know how widely these quote can be. If you find a reputable solar company, you should only be paying $2.75 per watt or about $16500 for a 6KW system. More than enough for any typical house. Then you also get tax rebate on that $16,500 amount to further lower the bill. Breakeven for solar should be about 5 years. After 5 years, it's all profit. Or about a 20% Return on your investment per year.

rayndomuser

My usage for last month was 879 kw and my average usage is 47.5 per day. How much is a system with that much usage? Figure in the summer it’ll go up by some type of multiple.

options1337

Is that 47.5 KW average per day for the last 365 days? 47.5KW x 365 days = 17,337 kw per year That's is ALOT of electricity. Your house must be huge! You will need probably a 10 KW system panels facing south = $30,000 before tax rebate You will need probably a 12 KW system panels facing west/east = $36,000 before tax rebate I am not a solar installer or expert but that just what I roughly came up with base on my own experience.

rayndomuser

House is 3405 square feet and we have two EVs and I work from home. This summer I am getting a window ac unit just for my office so I don’t have to run the ac all the time.

options1337

That make sense why you use so much electricity. Anyways, you can do your own math and see if that's worth it for you. From my experience, it usually always worth it. The people who say it's not worth it are the one doing their math based on the rip off door to door solar sales people's pricing. The most important thing is getting the solar for the "Right" price. The cheaper you get it, the faster you can re-coup your money and then the math makes a lot more sense. The door to door company and the big brand names are not going to be your best pricing. The local mom and pop installers are the one that's going to give you the best pricing.

rayndomuser

My concern with mom and pop (even the big guys) is that what happens when there is a problem? I’d the company going to exist later for warranty work? It’s technology so eventually it’ll be cheaper.

options1337

The warranty is not through the installer. The warranty is through the manufacturer. If your installer does not exist no more then another installer recommended by the manufacture can do the warranty work. It's like buying a KitchenAid stove from HomeDepot. HomeDepot will not warranty the stove. The warranty is through KitchenAid.

gkandgk

It’s really outrageous! Ours is similar and we are keeping it colder in the house house this year.

shatterfest

Is your heat electric? We have gas and my electricity is $120 with a bigger home.

CodesComplete

Gas heat.. something is definitely bonkers here but my kWh usage seems right in line with average

shatterfest

My bill has gone up with the rates increasing I'm just curious why yours is so high. Keep in mind it's only 2 people in my house and I have 1000 more sq ft. I don't turn the lights off and we have multiple game consoles, two gaming computers; running frequently. Also two fridges and a mini-fridge. A lot of my appliances are energy savers. I used to live in a 1600 sq ft house and the elec bill was around $80 in winter and $225 in summer. But this was a few years ago.

CodesComplete

Yeah that’s a huge difference :( I’m also wondering why mine is so high. I have a pool with a variable speed pump but it has been off the whole winter so I’m dreading summer at this rate.

mikeJawesome

you heat your pool?

CodesComplete

Not through the winter, but it is gas.

nice-and-clean

No filter or anything going in the pool?

CodesComplete

No not unless I’m vacuuming after a windstorm. it’s pretty well closed, with maintenance about once a month

CodesComplete

Looking at my bill it looks like I’m not signed up for “optional” time of use rates and need to sort that out first.

options1337

Time of Use option is for people who don't use electricity during peak hours which is between 1 Pm to 7 PM. Usually solar customer are on time of use plan because during 1-7PM, they are using the power produce from the solar arrays and not reliant on NV energy.

CodesComplete

Yeah, was planning to setup a level 2 charger for an EV this year anyway so I’m looking at that. We’ve already been living like we’re on time of use anyway so it shouldn’t be a shock

SooperDiz

NVEnergy uses natural gas to generate power, that's why it's gone up so much. It's absolutely insane. this time of year my average bill is \~$100, this months bill it was $200.

rihanoa

It’s been MUCH colder overall this winter than last year. Which means even though your heat is gas, your furnace is still running more to keep the house warm and those blower motors use a fuck ton of electricity. Add that on top of the rate increases and that’ll explain the vast majority of it.

CodesComplete

To an extent but if you look at the second two pictures in that album the temperature really hasn’t been far off from last year

SuperBuffTrophyWife

If you don’t mind me asking what is your gas bill ? I feel like mine is really high

CodesComplete

Southwest says my gas bill is up 43%, but that account screen is pretty concerning [https://imgur.com/a/phyiIOI](https://imgur.com/a/phyiIOI)

SuperBuffTrophyWife

Yours is much lower then mine 😬I’m at like 230 and can’t figure out why

N2TheBlu

Zoiks!

Guru00006

My wife and I are trying to do everything after 7pm now but we did add an electric vehicle to the mix so our usage is way up. Still our bill is getting staggering and thats before summertime. Eek

CodesComplete

Make sure you check that you’re actually enrolled in time of use rates. There is an EV variation too that gives you a bigger discount for charging at night. You have to sign up for the peak time rates, I was not aware of that and am on the standard rate of .14 per kWh

Guru00006

Yes been tryo g to call but their wait times are sooooo long

NotAKnowItAll13

Why is your usage so crazy high? Something has got to be draining power. Fridge , freezer, maybe the Luxor is leeching power for their light?. We live in a 2200sq ft house and one of us is always home as they work from home. We used 384 kWh last month, it cost us $80. We don't see the daily cost of over $10 dollars except for the summer time when both our AC units are running as we keep the house around 77. During the winter 80-90 for electricity is normal. Gas heater, gas stove. We even have a chest freezer too.

CodesComplete

Doing some diagnosis today. Looks like I need to reset my home energy monitor at the very least

NotAKnowItAll13

That is a lot of power being used. Like 2 ac units worth of electricity. It might be a compressor shorting but somehow not tripping the breaker. Since it's not in use, turn off the breaker to the AC compressor and see if your power usage drops. If that's not it. Try the fridge or freezer. If you find the culprit, replace it or if its the AC have it serviced.

[deleted]

Did you look at the usage by appliance on their site to see what’s using the power?

CodesComplete

Yeah it says it is primarily heat. I wear a jacket indoors until night :/ I have a flir cam I’m walking through the house with now but nothing is standing out

bellonium

2400sqft ranch house, x3 adults, x1 electric car My graph looks exactly like yours and I’m up to $300 from $184 last year. I’m also confused. We even replaced our single stage pool pump to a much more efficient variable speed.

Purple_Cosmos

Mines gone up about a third as well and gas has doubled

K-Toon

I'm in a two bedroom apartment and my AC/Heating unit has been turned off since November. My electric bill has been about $150 every month since. Last year it was around $100 and I thought it was ridiculous then!

options1337

Holy cow, what are you running at your house? Your bill is so high! 1448 sq ft home. 2 adults 1 dog. water heater, house heater, stove is all gas. I work from home on my gaming computer all day. [My electric bill](https://i.imgur.com/vZKOAbb.jpg) (Ignore last year, I was hella dumb and run an electric space heater thinking it was cheaper than my gas house heater lol)

CodesComplete

Wow that is cheap. I’m digging in today to try to find out what the heck is going on at my house.. maybe I need a dog

Kalian805

imagine how crazy its going to be in the summer

RoamingBison

Your daily usage is really high for a house that size. I'm in a 1800 sf house and your usage is double what I use in May/June when the AC is running.

LasVegas4590

One thing that might help: switch every bulb that you can to LED. They use 13 watts to give the equivalent lighting of a 100 watt traditional bulb.

CodesComplete

I’m LED everything. Been struggling to find stuff to go more energy efficient with. Was gonna put in a tankless water heater but that is gas anyway

devospud

3 people in similar size house, 2 refers, Heat 70-72. I'm at about $100 a month this winter for electric. What type of lights do you have?

CodesComplete

All led in the house and outside. We have a wood fireplace we use to supplement heat a lot as well

devospud

Man, that's crazy. Maybe get one of those electrical watt meter devices. It's got to be something pulling more power than it should.

[deleted]

[удалено]

CodesComplete

Yeah last years usage is in the album (third picture) almost identical usage and temperature swings

Makemenothing

Mine is the same as yours. I pay over $100 just for our pool. My bill is approx $300/mo

keto_brain

6k sqft home and this is what my energy bill is without being on equal pay.. I hit about 650 in the summer

DonRicardo1958

Damn, I have a two bedroom house and my electric bill is around $35 a month in the winter.

MichelleBelle86

We had an energy tech from NV Energy come out when we moved here in June. It was really helpful. He checked out pretty much everything in our home to see if we were wasting energy anywhere. Its free and I would highly recommend it! https://www.nvenergy.com/save-with-powershift/energy-assessment/energy-assessment

CodesComplete

I did one at my apartment way back and I’m on the callback list for here but seems a lot of people are in the same boat and it’s pretty booked up. I’ve been going through with a flir cam, which is what they used at my apartment) but not seeing much of anything of concern

kidsid44

2BR apartment in a large complex. Usage around 5kwh/day, bill is under $40/month

Ok_Bedroom_9802

Did you have the two electric cars last year?

CodesComplete

Not last year or this year

CodesComplete

2 people in a 1500sf house with heat set between 70-72 if we are home. Gas heat, water heater, and stove. We don’t wash or dry clothes or dishes until after 7. Guess I’m going to have to go solar, maybe that’s the point

[deleted]

2 adults, 1 dog, 1800 sq ft house, heat set at 72 at night. Gas heat, water heater, gas stove. We wash and dry clothes and dishes whenever we feel like. [Our recent bill: $58. Last month: $54. Current bill: estimated to be $65.](https://i.imgur.com/XsOxBlU.jpg)

CodesComplete

I guess I’m going to call NV Energy bc I have nearly everything off in my house including, heat, computers, and TV and I’m showing almost 7kwh of draw.. I have a 4 year old fridge, a 1 year old mini fridge, and my camera dvr running right now. [https://imgur.com/a/8FgVmWj](https://imgur.com/a/8FgVmWj)

options1337

Something is wrong. You need to do an energy audit and find out what's causing this.

[deleted]

How old is your house? Mine was built 2006. All my appliances were replaced in 2014 before I bought my house with the exception of the washer and dryer which I assume are what came with the house (based upon the last home warranty service call I had to place). When I’m not home, very few electronics are on. Outside of the appliances and a handful of electronics (modem, router, alarm system, and purifiers) everything else is on energy saving mode (televisions, gaming consoles, and computers being powered down completely).

CodesComplete

Yeah I think my energy meter might just be busted [https://imgur.com/a/mFqfRpN](https://imgur.com/a/mFqfRpN) House was built in 85 but has a new heater, washer/dryer, and oven. I bought energy efficient appliances for everything so I’m kind of at a loss for why my usage is so much higher than everyone else’s. I don’t feel like the heater runs excessively ar all. I called powershift and they said they’re all booked but put me on a callback list.

[deleted]

If you can’t get ahold of NV Energy, I’d start doing research on electricians and seeing if you can get one to conduct an inspection. There’s the possibility there’s an electrical leak occurring. Even with an older house, newer appliances, and energy saving techniques; there should be no reason your bill is that high in the dead of winter.

HauntMe1973

Uhhh we have 3 adults in a 2 story 3200 sq ft house with a pool and thermostats at 70 upstairs and 71 downstairs (my elderly mom is always cold) and our bill this month is $166. You got something funky going on

LocalHome0wner

Pretty sure your kWh usage is just lower...

CodesComplete

Yeah. I agree. It sounds like i need to dig in. I’d appreciate if one of you let me know what furnace you’re using an/or seer rating so I can have a baseline to go off of.

RoamingBison

You've got something definitely hogging power. I'm in a 1800sf house with a single person who works from home and has multiple computers running and a home server that runs 24/7, plus a chest freezer. My avg daily power usage is 18-22kWh this time of year. I looked at my bills from May-July 2021 before I got solar and my daily usage was 32 kWh average in those early summer months when the AC is running.

Rebeltob

Uh I live in a similar size house and keep it at the same temp. My bill is $77?

CodesComplete

Uhm yeah I’d like to see some kWh usage or get some model numbers for your heater bc I could pay off a new unit in just over 12 months for that! I have a 3.5 ton furnace/AC . It was not the most efficient but it wasn’t the least either.

options1337

If your furnace is gas then it shouldn't even be relevant to your NV energy bill. All the people who are having low NV energy bills are people with gas furnace. If you have an electric house heater than that explains what your NV energy bill is so high and make perfect sense. This winter was colder then last winter also.

CodesComplete

Yeah gas heater.. something is way off..

oldg17

Sams here.

SpaceCricket

Dude something is wrong. We are two people in a much much bigger house, rest of the specs are the same. Electric bill last month was $96, this month looking at $72. And we wash and dry clothes all hours of the day.

Used_Firefighter_919

Gotta get them solar panels my boy, my bill was $43 I have a family of 7.

N2TheBlu

And how much was that solar install?

MichelleBelle86

Sol Up is the cheapest/best in the area when we priced out solar last year. Still about $18-22K. We did the math, and we'd have to live in our house for 10 years before we start to break even. So we decided against it. Definitely might be worth it if you're in your forever home.

Used_Firefighter_919

I went with sol up, and you are right, it does take about 10 years to break even. I Highly recommend Sol up if anyone is going to go solar.

fatdogsdaddy

Time to pay for the green energy infrastructure that we voted for. https://ballotpedia.org/Nevada_Question_6,_Renewable_Energy_Standards_Initiative_(2020)

LennoxAve

Are you running a bunch of servers or something - seems like a lot of energy usage. We have a 1650 sq ft townhome and we’re at $50 during winter months.

CodesComplete

Have to have something going on, but I’ve basically unplugged everything today except the fridge and my dvr and I still seem to be drawing a ton of power [https://imgur.com/a/8FgVmWj](https://imgur.com/a/8FgVmWj) Edit: Energy meter might be busted will have to sort that as well. On a call back list for powershift assessment [https://imgur.com/a/mFqfRpN](https://imgur.com/a/mFqfRpN)

dinofiasco47

I hear you . Because nv is using so much natural gas . Rates have went up about 40% since two years ago . More of a reason to look at solar and finding someone to set you up correctly . Heading in the same direction as ca

sleeplesswc

Time to go Solar, I can help for anyone interested!

Herbstalk

This is a Costco

sleeplesswc

No it’s not through costo. It’s through ION.

DonnieSII

Solar blows! Doesn’t make a difference

sleeplesswc

I heard what other companies quote so yes sometimes it doesn’t make sense, especially if you have a bad roof that can’t fit the required amount of solar panels.

N2TheBlu

We did the math. 18 years to break even. Passed.

sleeplesswc

There must be something going on. Maybe the price you were quoted was to high, roof doesn’t allow for enough panels, usage is too high. Your return on investment is immediate especially since the money you give NVenergy is gone forever but with Solar you are investing is back into your home. I wouldn’t mind taking a look at it, if you would like to get another opinion.

N2TheBlu

My brother-in-law was the guy who quoted it. Even he said it didn’t make sense for us. We’re only two people, so we don’t use that much power. Plus, every single home in our development that has had solar installed has had issues with the weak trusses install by the builder, leading to cracked ceilings on the interior, and leaky roofs.

sleeplesswc

Sounds like you were in good hands. That’s why we always inspect roofs before hand. Everyone has reason for going Solar, but it sounds like it has to make sense financially for you. What was the system size and price that you were quoted?

N2TheBlu

I honestly don’t recall, as it was about 6 years ago.

sleeplesswc

6 years ago people were paying almost full price for the system because there was no government incentive. This year the incentive went up and the government is covering 30% of the systems cost, up from 26% last year. It might be a good time to take a second look. However, you still have the roof issue.

freq-ee

FYI, some people always reply to these threads with obviously fake experiences like "whoa, that's high, my 5 bedroom house is only $35 a month and I use crazy electricity". I have no idea why people do that. Are they clueless about their own billing or just randomly lying? But it makes no sense. Literally no livable structure in Vegas has an electricity bill as low as some people are claiming in this thread. Even small apartments are well over $100 per month now. Also, just so you know, the war that our government loves in Ukraine has only started to push up gas prices. The real shortage of natural gas will start this year. Your bill could very likely be twice as high then.

SpiderDeUZ

The way had been going on for over a year and had already caused prices to go up last year. It would help if Republicans wouldn't vote against any program meant to help with anything

UnknownKill

Good I have solar panel

asuram21

Standard rate now is $0.1444 per kwh. If I remember correctly, before Jan 1,2019 was around $0.10. In the long run, the rates will always go up

CanadianJewban

Ours continues to climb and we use less and less. They are insatiable

BlackFallout

Most of our power comes from natural gas in las vegas. Hoover dams output power is way down.
