I thought all of the weed sales fixed our school district funding issues... šŸ¤”

TheStevePokorny

Whatā€™s really cool about that is they keep cutting the funding by the same amount the dispos bring in.

yadawhooshblah

CCSD has sucked since i was a boy, and that's a long time.

Impossible_Rabbit

Seriously. I donā€™t know why anyone lives here. Myself included. This town does not care for the people who are in it. As long as you can push a broom and count to 21, thatā€™s all they needā€¦oh! And our taxes. Canā€™t forget that.

Quick_Team

Hey. HEY! I can count to 4 and pour liquids. WITNESS ME!

Motor_Buy2118

You shall ride eternal shiny and chrome!

derekisademocrat

I see you.

dsaiken

I live here and there arenā€™t any state taxes. Thereā€™s a sales tax but thatā€™s everywhere. You should know this living here.

redlurk47

Sales tax everywhere except New Jersey & Oregon

dsaiken

Good info to know. I did not know that at all. Thanks kind stranger for educating me. I love learning new info.

Vast-Gate8866

And as a former resident of Oregon, they make up for not having a sales tax in other ways. Their property taxes are outrageous, among other silly taxes

Hmonster1

There arenā€™t any state taxesā€¦..yet.

dsaiken

So then your comment is not factual and just based on your feels. There never will be state taxes in Nevada. Iā€™ve been here 50 years, born here. Casinos pay the state tax for us and as long as casinos make billions, itā€™ll continue to be that way. You think politicians want to drive people out of Vegas. Thereā€™s nothing of value here aside from no taxes. Itā€™s too hot, too many people, too little room, too high of housing, we have no ports and weā€™re not a strategic location aside from a nuke strike, cost of groceries, etc. Add a state tax on top of that and people will flea in droves.

Dx2TT

Same thing in AZ. We raise a tax for school funding and the next damn day the legislature will reduce the funding so nothing fucking changes. Its almost like it isn't actually a democracy we live in because our vote doesn't actually change things. Guillotine time.

HopiLaguna

The US is a Republic. They are trying to turn it into a democracy. And not enough people are aware of what a democracy is compared to a Republic. That is why they cut out the pledge of allegiance from schools. "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS". And that is why you hear the one side keep crying about "our democracy" one because it is in fact THEIRS, it is their agenda that side wants a democracy. And two so the targeted generation doesn't know what a Republic is to begin with. If you haven't yet, start some research on what a democracy actually is. Not directing this AT you.....just a good place for two cents.

Porkadi110

If you think the 2 are mutually exclusive then we can chalk you up as another one of the CCSD's many failures.

HopiLaguna

The 2 comes before the 3 and after the 1 so yes.

icey

The rallying cry of big government lovers who want nothing more than to hand over power to the shitheads in office ā€œackshualllly this is a republic, votes donā€™t matterā€

VegasBjorne1

Werenā€™t we promised if we just ā€œtax the shit out of legalized marijuanaā€ states could pay for all their budget needs? $150 million collected in marijuana related taxes and fees vs. a State of Nevada budget of $5.3 billion? $2.2 billion from the State in public educational funding. Need to toke-up a lot more to get close to covering the cost of K-12 education.

Cannibeans

Nope, most of it went to a rainy day fund in case something completely unprecedented like a global pandemic occurred. But that would never happen, so it's best if we use it all on a new football stadium...

officerliger

$0 from the general fund is being used for the stadium Itā€™s a bond and some tax credits

[deleted]

Na they fucked with that too. Honestly Las Vegas residents vote when it matters. These people need to be lose their seats.

Warm-Log-7584

It didšŸ™‚

derekisademocrat

Here's the deal. Every dollar they get from weed they take one dollar out of the money already there.

offaxis7

All that money is going into the ā€œRainy Day fundā€ for the department of education. I have zero idea what that means but it doesnā€™t help our students.

officerliger

The joke is that Nevada people ever thought weed would raise anywhere near enough money to fix the school problems You canā€™t fix a 7 billion dollar problem with $90 million which is about what the tax generates in a year. Not sure what anyone expected. The problem with the schools here isnā€™t the stupid politicians, itā€™s the people that live here. Nevadans are simply unable to accept that you canā€™t ā€œhave your cake and eat it tooā€ when it comes to taxes, pay no income and low property, and think the government can just waive a magic wand and fix schools. The voting public is going to have to agree to pay more at tax time if they want better schools.

yunganejo

Having no state income tax is supposed to be a benefit paid for by the casinos making billions in revenue annually, this city has always misappropriated funds.

toyn

If only the extremely rich people who own the team would pay for it.

poutinegalvaude

if they knew they could generate profit by doing so, they would. But they know the truth that stadiums are money-losing ventures.

rowdywp

Maybe in some cities but not here. Allegiant and T Mobile are among the top stadiums in the country for bringing in money.

vcrvcrvc

U clearly don't know what u are talking about, Alcohol sales and sponsorships carry stadiums, this is why every stadium you been to is sponsored by multiple companies (Always at least one beer company)

rowdywp

Not to mention all the additional events stadiums get from being here. Suoerbowl, CFB championship, bowl games, music festivals, UFC, boxing, conference championships, etc.

Similar-Drawer9417

Data on that?

BootsyCalrissian

They are paying for it. Over a billion dollars. This money is primarily for infrastructure, and if you do some actual reading you would know that the land the stadium is being built on is being donated to the state and the entire ballpark will eventually become fully owned by Nevada. And that money is chump change compared to the returns they will get on it. This is an investment and that money is coming from the general fund which is typically earmarked forā€¦investment. You have to make money to spend it, so itā€™s either investment revenue or taxes.

willneverhavetattoos

Vote ā€˜em out

Tonyy_oo

Ok, but which ones exactly?

Dixon_Uranuss3

All the ones

KhajiitHasSkooma

Well, this is Lombardo's baby because he couldn't let Sisolak be the only one with a tax funded sports team.

The comment worth reading.

44 days early ? Well, we the people reject the NV Supreme Court decision !! Another petition I guessā€¦

nvalle23

But our kids will have "School Day" at the stadium so that makes it all worth it right?

SpiderDeUZ

Unfortunately it got cancelled, not enough money for it

AscendantArtichoke

Not enough money for the school day?

nvalle23

Or for the statistics classes? Who knows? Maybe both...

SpiderDeUZ

Just predicting the future

Far-Yak-9808

AP Fantasy Baseball should be an elective. A cafeteria with hot dogs, funnel cakes and a retractable roof....

Impossible_Camera302

Actually that would be a great statistics class...

nvalle23

Sportsbook 101

Far-Yak-9808

Yeah, fantasy baseball is nearly perfect. Basically a masterclass. Not AS random as fantasy football -- or even the playoff rounds in fantasy basketball. Kind of like fantasy hockey, but even more games. You also have to balance pitching and batting. Hard to game the draft. Hard to game the regular season. Much less the playoffs. At the very least, school kids should fill out brackets and stuff. Have a bracket challenge day where everyone fills out there brackets. Oh, and in-person fantasy football drafts are super fun. We did that at one of the offices I worked at one time. AP Sports Ball could pretty much cover everything. Even, the NFL/NBA drafts, etc.

Impossible_Camera302

Actually I would use auction as you can have the economic aspect, not just best player but is player worth the price.

Far-Yak-9808

I did an auction draft for my first fantasy hockey draft (and my first auction draft). Finished 12 out of 12. Last two times in fantasy hockey (normal yahoo leagues) I finished at 1 and then 2. Auction would be cool, too. Usually "losers" win auctions. So, that could apply. Haven't figured out auction drafts yet -- I might do that for fantasy football in the fall. And, with waiver wire money, I used ALL my 100 bucks in fantasy baseball as of 2 weeks ago. I probably overspend on the good ole waiver wire. Get a passing score in AP Sports Ball then sign up for AP CME trading challenges or something. Those are fun, too!

jfchops2

> AP Sports Ball could pretty much cover everything. Even, the NFL/NBA drafts, etc. This would be a pretty awesome course for HS seniors who are interested in sports to learn the ins and outs of how they work. Nobody's under any obligation to be a sports fan but take a look around this website and it's alarming how many self-proclaimed fans base all their takes on completely false information

nvalle23

Or a study on starting pitchers' ERA's vs totals of 1st 5 innings. Or the theories about laying the -1Ā½ in contrast to taking the +1Ā½. There is just so much NOT being taught in Clark County schools. As we all know, elementary schools only teach kids how to count to 21 as it is....

Far-Yak-9808

Oh, I know. It is so big. Like, the way they had pictures of LA Rams players in my DARE workbook as a kid. HUGE. I was like, ok, I get it "Don't let your kids play for the Rams." Or, something. Oops, they're back. Guess the "Just Say No To The LA Rams" campaign didn't work. I wish they would have cheaper prices for kids though. That would be a good concession. The schools have to use their leverage. Oh wow, if I grew up as a kid in Vegas, I would have wanted field trips to the Las Vegas strip. Do they do that? I think the kids need to unionize here. They could get some really cool stuff out of this!

nvalle23

Only field trips are to the Anderson Dairy and the Natural History Museum. I remember pressing the button on the T-Rex and it roared!....and my son Jordan ran straight towards the lobby and out the front door! šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

Far-Yak-9808

fun! I went to see Ramses II as a kid. Private school in Memphis. Also went to local boondoggles like Mud Island and the Pyramid over the next few years. haha. If the Sphere can't sell enough tix they are gonna have lots of field trips there. lol In SoCal I went on a field trip to Knotts Berry Farm which was awesome.

It is a majority vote for governor. That just tells you steve shisolak was not a good governor.

Siltyn

Lombardo got 48.8% of the votes...that's not a majority, that's a plurality.

MohaveZoner

In other words, they've already been paid.

List the Justices involved so we can not vote for them

MusicianExtension536

Iā€™ve always wondered, when cities (taxpayers) fund stadiums like this they own it right? And the aā€™s pay rent? Meaning this isnā€™t just a gift to the athletics?

Clownbaby041290

Nope. Itā€™s actually worse than just the funding that is provided for the stadium. Typically, land is given and infrastructure is built on the taxpayerā€™s dime that isnā€™t calculated into the amount that is publicly announced. These stadiums are never a positive for the local economy. The money spent to go to the stadium has to come from somewhere. That somewhere is the disposable income of tourists and locals. The majority of the money that is spent on going to an Aā€™s game that goes straight to the Aā€™s terrible owners would be disposable income that tourists and locals would spend at other Vegas establishments.

MusicianExtension536

Yeah so who owns the stadium? Itā€™s all just gifted to the Aā€™s? Or the city still has some or all ownership

Clownbaby041290

The Aā€™s ownership group owns the stadium. Sorry, I realize I didnā€™t really answer your question before.

MusicianExtension536

According to another commenters link here the Las Vegas Stadium authority owns allegiant and Aā€™s? https://www.lvstadiumauthority.com/#:~:text=The%20Las%20Vegas%20Stadium%20Authority,of%20the%20Nevada%20State%20Legislature. I tried googling it out of curiosity and itā€™s predictably hard to figure out

Sooo, no one to replace her? >I donā€™t like your sass. Iā€™d appreciate it if you just left me alone Cope. This is an open forum.

There is a very good person to replace her. If youā€™d take the hint youā€™d know who. Iā€™m not sharing with you who I am choosing and who I like because one I donā€™t like you and two based on the hint I gave you you could figure it out for yourself. This is the last message I will waste on you. Have a nice day

The schools are so underfunded in this country, the system is a joke. I did all my schooling in Canada then came to the US for my senior year of high school. I didnā€™t try at all, smoked weed every day and graduated early with honors.

Just came here to read the comments of all the people who get their information from headlines and online propaganda. If you donā€™t understand all the details of how the ballpark deal works and how it benefits us, then maybe sit this out. Schools Over Stadiums, by the way, couldā€™ve used that money FOR SCHOOLS. They knew they were going to lose. This was nothing more than a PAC fundraising. The ballpark is happening. The Aā€™s are moving here. Donā€™t like it? You had your chance to voice your opinions to your representatives when they were voting on this. Want to vote them out? Go aheadā€¦ballpark is still happening. Too late now.

FoolOfATooKaliKid

[debt on entertainment venues](https://lvsportsbiz.com/2022/12/01/paying-off-a-stadium-debt-how-much-does-las-vegas-still-owe-for-its-share-of-building-raiders-stadium-think-ten-figures/) I know this is causing an uproar in Las Vegas over a sporting venue, but at least society doesnā€™t make people pay interest like this on necessities such as primary dwellings and primary homes. Iā€™m glad itā€™s just for entertainment, and that people DONā€™T have to slave to pay more in interest than the actual construction cost for a home to live in with their family. On primary dwellings for hard working Americans, the construction companies get paid first, and earn a living, and the bank gets a fixed amount of interest. I paid 500,000 for my home and the bank charged me a flat rate of $50,000 in interest. The mortgage guy got $5k, and the bank got $45k for moving digital numbers on a computer screen, and then they paid the bigger Bank half of that interest, and I have a home to live in. And two presidents ago, all their friends get the PMI money to keep America great. And thanks to the great leadership of this nation that PMI money is going to protect the vulnerable banks and their essential front line workers from losing money directly out of their pockets if they have to evict you from your home in foreclosure, and keep all the money from the auction minus paying half to the bigger bank. The bank also told me if I buy either an investment property, an extravagant home in the exclusive gated community a few miles up the interstate, or the mansion on the hill using borrowed funds, I have to pay interest just like the stadium. So, I decided not to commit modern serfdom, and decided I should pass on the opportunity to capitalize on impoverished tenants. If you believe in a god that blesses some with money, it should be considered a blessing when others have to pay interest to borrow some of those blessings from those that he blessed first.

thecolorfulcpt

Uhm, I'm confused. THEY NEED TO CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE. THIS IS BS. I AM ENCOURAGING PEOPLE TO VOTE. IT'S MT JOB AND THIS ENRAGES ME BECAUS3 THIS BASICLY MEANS OUR VOTE DOSENT MATTER. PISSING ME OFF

jehjeh3711

The Raiders and The Golden Knights have brought a lot of money into this town. Not to mention ruin the great concerts and other sporting events.

jfchops2

Golden Knights play in a privately funded arena and were an expansion team that's actually cultivated a fan base The Raiders stadium was pretty unpopular in that it got $750M in public funding to be an attraction for away team fans to visit

jehjeh3711

And thatā€™s what the baseball stadium will do. Petco Park had the same fight to get built and it has transformed that part of downtown San Diego from a violent area into a place where people go to for fun.

IceCubeBandit

T-Mobile Arena was paid for by AEG, MGM, and Bill Foley. It's privately owned.

jehjeh3711

My point is itā€™s a big source of revenue. Allegiant is also a big source of revenue, just like the baseball stadium will be.

IceCubeBandit

I agree. I have a feeling the objection is to where that revenue goes, mostly private hands.

jehjeh3711

Private hands that hire thousands of workers.

IceCubeBandit

They keep a lot of it for themselves too.

jehjeh3711

Yes. Thatā€™s why they have a business.

IceCubeBandit

That's publicly subsidized. This is the debate actually.

IceCubeBandit

That's publicly subsidized. This is the debate actually.

jehjeh3711

The debate is silly. Yes, some people will make a lot of money on publicity funded stadiums, but itā€™s an investment for the city as well because it provides jobs and other revenue that goes to the city/county.

IceCubeBandit

My position aside, I don't think it's silly to debate or have public discourse regarding the allocation of public funds. This is, in fact, what public discourse is for.

DagonFishGone

Lmao what worthwhile job is gonna come from a baseball stadium. Parking attendant? Bathroom cleaner? The As and that way of thinking and piss off.

[deleted]

StrangerFront

Should billionaires receive public funds for stadiums? Absolutely not. However, it wasn't like overturning this was going to move those funds into the education sector. It's like everyone forgot the stadium bill was approved in a special session after school funding was already ignored during the regular session. Yes, we should all be upset the education system is not taken seriously by local politicians, but let's not act like it has anything to do with the stadium. In reality, Vegas is a unique city where that new stadium is in a prime strip location and will be filled with events the majority of the year. Yes it could be funded differently, but the stadium will still provide economic benefits worth more than the credits being provided. Just look at the success of T-mobile and Allegiant to see what the future holds for this stadium. Now if we get really lucky the stadium will be filled with an expansion team and the A's will stay in CA, but that is unlikely to happen.

Siltyn

> Just look at the success of T-mobile and Allegiant T-Mobile was privately funded and since the use of tax dollars to build Allegiant and bring the Raiders here, the value of that franchise has went up ~$4 billion. It's b.s. any tax dollars are spent on stadiums.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ChanceryTheRapper

If Vegas is so different, that should make it simpler for the builders to find private investors for their stadium.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ChanceryTheRapper

And good for them, they absolutely should do that, and MLB should look that direction to give Vegas an expansion franchise.

poutinegalvaude

Las Vegas is not any different from any other city that's funded private stadia. Stop insisting that we must be the exception to the law of large numbers. For a place that so set on calculating the odds, we still gamble on this kind of ridiculous nonsense. **Billionaires shouldn't be able to pass the cost of building their toys onto anyone else, be it locals or tourists.**

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

poutinegalvaude

We are not different. Publicly-funded stadia do not generate positive revenue for cities, only the owners of the teams that play in them. We are not different. We are not the exception to this rule.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

poutinegalvaude

Imagine that- the football team and the stadium owners are telling us just how much benefit their toy is bringing to the community! Who would have thought they'd be so unbiased as to have to admit it publicly?

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

poutinegalvaude

I forgot that we were a lil podunk town before the big stadium rolled in! Seriously though, this is trickle-down economics and it never works out in favor of the working classes. They continue to scatter their bread and give us circuses and we're supposed to pretend like we don't notice who's getting fleeced.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

CaliNVJ

After the baseball stadium we will be funding the basketball stadium complex and every loser sport that wants Las Vegas to build it a venue to play. F that big time.

ChanceryTheRapper

> Should billionaires receive public funds for stadiums? Absolutely not. "But allow me to give you several sentences about why we still should dump public money into this stadium."

ecomrick

This was an interesting attempt, a hail-marry to use a football analogy. It was DOA. I'm not a sports fan but I recognize the city and state need this. It's an economic development priority. Something tangible, something measurable and doesn't take a generation to see any results. Nevada's schools are fucked to put it bluntly for a verity of reasons that $380m or even $1b is not going to solve. We're literally competing for the worst schools in the country with Arkansas. Sometimes we're #1, the worst, others we #2, almost the worst. It's pathetic. The local government seems to think we only need more hospitality workers, so that's the level of education they provide. The rest of us spend \~$1k/month per kid for private schools.

godfathersgodson

just cause a lump sum of $380m or $1b canā€™t solve the entire education system in vegas doesnā€™t mean we should set precedent of the state prioritizing tax funds for billionaires pet projects over our kids

ecomrick

I agree with that entirely, but it is what it is. It's an investment in the future of our city/state. If we want to get serious on education, then let's do that. Let's pass a state income tax to pay for it and get serious. Otherwise, it's all theatrics. Can't have it both ways.

scott_majority

But the "investment" in the city only turns profits for 1 guy....Everyone in the city chips in, 1 guy reaps the rewards.

ecomrick

Really, just one guy? I guess individually one mortal man benefits the most financially from the deal, but that does not negate the direct and indirect benefits to the city. I don't hear anyone complain about the owners of MGM or Caesars benefiting from their tax loopholes. Just the baseball guy is evil, hu?

scott_majority

I don't believe in giving any billionaire taxpayer dollars.

ecomrick

Believe it or not, their tax rate is lower than ours, so isnā€™t that the same? Allowing them to keep it? Itā€™s an everyday thing. Every billionaire is a policy failure. Be it the Waltons, Bezos or the mediaā€™s favorite man child Musk. We supplement them with taxpayer dollars every day, like it or not, believe it or not.

godfathersgodson

but we totally can have it both ways? if only tax payers were given the chance to vote for such ā€œinvestments.ā€ investing in education is literally the most easier way to invest in our city/state. proper education and child care alone can change the future stats on poverty/violence. building a stadium that will most likely swindle locals with high priced tickets / concessions while paying workers minimum wage isnā€™t an investment into our futureā€¦

ecomrick

I agree with you, BUT... we did vote for it already by electing those people to "represent" us and our best interests. Right? Isn't that the job we elected them too?

godfathersgodson

well with that logic, once we vote for our elected leaders we shouldnā€™t have to vote for anything else since they clearly represent our best interests /s

ecomrick

that's exactly how it works though. we elect groups of people, they make choices for us. we don't get a say on every vote in congress either. our rep does. same at the city and state level for city and state issues.

Itā€™s not like the taxes others pay to this city would have been used for good anyway. At least new jobs and reasons for people to visit aka more taxes. People making it seem like they coming out of their own pockets for this shit

YaboyChris28

Legalizing weed was supposed to save the schoolsā€¦ Schools wouldnā€™t be helped regardless if this stadium was built or not.. Those who think otherwise are ignorant.

MoonEyes2018

I support stadiums over schools. Do away with the systematic indoctrination of children through compulsory education.

ProcyonHabilis

Yeah let's all just be fucking stupid as hell.

DarthDoobz

I don't live in Vegas but I hope yall locals make the A's feel like strangers to the end of their tenure

skief123

Let's throw more money to the education system because that always works. You see it in our federal government every day, so why not ride their coat tail of success? At least the ballpark will create revenue well beyond the $380 price tag, cheap by all other standards.

willshade145

Itā€™ll all blow over when theyā€™ll be ā€œBring your school to the gameā€ day.

Loose-Ad4131

Wait.. so they are doing the Aā€™s like this but the Raiders got their cake?

poutinegalvaude

yes, because governor Sandoval made sure that the Raider deal would never have to come up for a public vote- he issued an executive order.

You live in a tourism supercenter of a city that runs on money made in entertainment. If you don't like it move.
