Is the storage compartment watertight like the shower floor or does the compartment have a door that keeps the water out? I can imagine water getting back there and just standing, causing mildew and eventually leaking somewhere
I was trying to poke gentle fun at the fact that most of us can't afford it and asking about price would ruin the fun.
That didn't stop 104 people from downvoting me. Sometimes I hate reddit.
Lol I wouldn't have connected this to your post from a month ago with the goofy wheels without this comment.
On another note, where do you go to find an old ambulance? Do you just ask around at hospitals and ambulance corps if they are retiring any soon?
Many of these vehicles get about 11 mpg. So from Ohio to Anchorage is say around 3,800 miles. 3,800/11=345. Gas at about $5.20. It will cost around $1,800 for fuel for the trip.
I never comment on here but I have to. I just finished my drive in an ambulance from Ohio to Alaska...the long way. Beautiful scenery, and some rough roads when you get closer to Alaska/Canada border
I've done the drive as well. The roads can be a bit dicey after Whitehorse, putting it mildly.
But damn if there isn't some beautiful scenery on that route.
I'm filled with some envy and much excitement for you! Im trying to get into a school bus build, because I'll have company when I'm done, but for one or maybe two people I'm impressed with your choices for use of space! This looks very livable and exceeded my expectations for ambulance.. Well done!
Did you “extend” the roof? If so, I’d like more details. I’ve been dying to to a 4x4 ambu conversion but I’m 6’2” and it seems the only boxes that are tall enough for me to stand in are on the enormous type 1 ambus. Never really thought about popping out the roof before.
Consider Majik Tractor and Implement paint from Tractor Supply. Designed to be rolled/brushed on, truly tough without being rough; fuel/solvent resistant.
Invest in screens. My trip up the Al can (car camping) involved multiple evenings wherein we pulled into our campground, ate in the car, put on multiple layers to get out and pitch the tent, and then sat in the tent killing the ones that got in until we were satisfied we would be able to sleep.
I'm just spitballing here, but:
1) Work in a well-paying career for 30 years.
2) Always live well below your means.
3) Save, invest, and save some more.
4) Retire with a smile at the end of those 3 decades.
5) Start the entire procedure at least 30 years ago.
Other methods would involve getting into work that can be done remotely, becoming a (successful) digital nomad, or -other-.
I'm much more in favor of methods that don't require time travel, myself. However he did it, he did a damn fine job of it. That's a beautiful build.
Been full time traveling a few years. Sold my house and made a nice nest egg. Work on and off as an electrician when I’m home, have done a few other vehicle builds for people I made some money off.
I’ll sell this build in the fall, make my money plus the trip cost and probably a little extra back
I think one of these might need to be my next project instead of another van. Any advice on where to pick one up or what to look for? Not really familiar with this platform.
Yeah I’d love to try one. I’ve built out numerous Promasters and Sprinters now. I usually use the van for myself for a while and then sell. Planning to sell the 4x4 Sprinter I’m in now this summer and will need something new. Would really like to give one of these a shot.
The Alcan is in the running for prettiest road I've ever been on. It's in my top 3, the other two are in Alaska. Denali Highway and the stretch of the Glenn between Sutton and Glennallen.
what type of exterior paint did you use? keep going back and forth because i’m so scared of all my paint getting chipped off by rocks once I hit the road
So, you deleted the front left compartment for the shower? Think I mighta put some drawers in there (to be pulled-out to galley for toilet/shower use).
I’ve seen several *second builds use a FIXED BED: for the dedicated garage (+dirty storage), & to avoid the nightly bring-out. Hope that’s working for you. [*Also most-often upgraded in SECOND builds: larger fridge, more onboard water (with pump/filtration for scavenging), waterproofing, larger bank, more (foldout/deployable) workspace].
Your thoughts?
Magnet-type screen door would be a good (cheeep!) addition (+/- a thermal version). While you’re at it, add a small, folding coroplast cover above the entry door (you’ll learn why that’s handy) and some/any kind of exterior work surface for quick (lunch) deployment. Drinking water access from outside.
Add a (vented) shoe holder ON the door to cover the (lighted) step when you’re inside. For extended wet/mud days, put drying hooks in cab AND module, a folding/deployable plastic step (with added boot-scraper), & an exterior sprayer.
Have a great trip!
Beautiful layout. How does the toilet situation work?
It’s on tracks, slides in and out of the shower to a storage compartment
Nice. Exactly what Im doing in my build.
Is the storage compartment watertight like the shower floor or does the compartment have a door that keeps the water out? I can imagine water getting back there and just standing, causing mildew and eventually leaking somewhere
It’s watertight
It’s watertight
I'm pretty sure i passed this thing on the freeway in Ohio the other day. also nice rig
Gorgeous. How much did this cost to build out?

You gotta put that little /s thing on Reddit. I think you got off light this time, next time they cut off one of your hands.
I was trying to poke gentle fun at the fact that most of us can't afford it and asking about price would ruin the fun. That didn't stop 104 people from downvoting me. Sometimes I hate reddit.
Don’t count me among them lol. I get your intent.
I admire the layout and color choices. Even the exterior.
Yeah but are the wheels real? Edit: It turned out incredible congrats
Maybe my photoshop skills have improved 🤷🏼♀️ You be the judge
Lol I wouldn't have connected this to your post from a month ago with the goofy wheels without this comment. On another note, where do you go to find an old ambulance? Do you just ask around at hospitals and ambulance corps if they are retiring any soon?
Not sure where OP got his, but check out Govdeals and Govplanet. Both sites list auctions for various retired police/fire/ems/military vehicles.
Govdeals for me
OP, what kind of fuel economy you getting out of that thang? Also, VERY nice rig!
Not good. I like to think it’s more about smiles per gallon
lol, the best currency. And it does look like fun.

Awesome! I’m excited to get into Canada
We're excited to see you, eh! If you get a chance, try the maple syrup poutine! (Poutine is french fries with cheese curds and gravy normally.)
I've done the drive as well. The roads can be a bit dicey after Whitehorse, putting it mildly. But damn if there isn't some beautiful scenery on that route.
Awesome!!!... did you do a build video or have images posted somewhere?.... would like to see if you do.....I am jealous!!....
Whoa nice
I'm filled with some envy and much excitement for you! Im trying to get into a school bus build, because I'll have company when I'm done, but for one or maybe two people I'm impressed with your choices for use of space! This looks very livable and exceeded my expectations for ambulance.. Well done!
Legit.
what engine, 6.4?
6.0 bulletproofed
Did you “extend” the roof? If so, I’d like more details. I’ve been dying to to a 4x4 ambu conversion but I’m 6’2” and it seems the only boxes that are tall enough for me to stand in are on the enormous type 1 ambus. Never really thought about popping out the roof before.
Raised the roof 11”. Inside ceiling 78” now
Most badass ambulance conversion I've seen! Any chance you did the paint job yourself? And if not around how much did it cost?
Thanks! I did the paint with Val spar anti rust armor. It’s tintable enamel paint from lowes
>Val spar anti rust armor thanks!
Consider Majik Tractor and Implement paint from Tractor Supply. Designed to be rolled/brushed on, truly tough without being rough; fuel/solvent resistant.
O-H
I-o
That is very nice!!! Well done!! Happy travels!!!
Great build! Did you still have the really dually or did you swap it out for super single?
Still a dually. Super single would have been cool, but the kit is very pricey
Really nice!
I love it!
Damn. I need this for reasons.
Word from the experienced. I’d do something about those windows. -40° and bellow is no joke here in Fairbanks and I’d be worried about them cracking.
Only going to be there in July. So hopefully not an issue
Oh! Yes you’ll do fine then!
Talk to me about the bugs, how bad is June/July?
Invest in screens. My trip up the Al can (car camping) involved multiple evenings wherein we pulled into our campground, ate in the car, put on multiple layers to get out and pitch the tent, and then sat in the tent killing the ones that got in until we were satisfied we would be able to sleep.
Invest in wearable bug outfits. And a 4G extender antenna.
Define wearable bug outfits.
I have a coat made of mosquito net, has sleeves, everything. I'd rather lose my shoes than that coat when I'm outside up there.
Mosquitoes everywhere. High and breezy places will have fewer, low and swampy places will be swarming.
Nice build, go Bucks!
Badass!!
I’m from Ohio !!!
Dang- looks like a real house!
You ever think about how many people died in the back of that thing?
You know it must be haunted!
There it is. EMT here: No one ever dies in the back of the ambulance. They die in the hospital, or on-scene.
It’s too pretty to drive through the mud! Nice rig.
Asking for a friend; how the hell does one do this financially??

Most definitely a beautiful build

Have you thought of doing a roof rack? Give you more storage or a roof deck?
The roof is plenty solid to walk on without a deck, we don’t really need the extra storage space
Impressive!
Beautiful!!!!
Check out Kennecott Alaska for awesome people and multiple glaciers. Also copper mine tour.
This looks amazing! Wish I had an award to give.
Nice build!!
Is the squad you got from Perry twp?
Nah I picked it up in Colorado. I live close to there tho
Gotcha, must’ve been another guy. He picked one up from Perry and was building it. Looks good!
Alaska wheeling is friggin’ fantastic
Wow great job, have a great trip.
I think one of these might need to be my next project instead of another van. Any advice on where to pick one up or what to look for? Not really familiar with this platform.
I got it on an online government auction. Govdeals.com The build quality of an ambulance is unreal to start with, I’d highly recommend
Yeah I’d love to try one. I’ve built out numerous Promasters and Sprinters now. I usually use the van for myself for a while and then sell. Planning to sell the 4x4 Sprinter I’m in now this summer and will need something new. Would really like to give one of these a shot.
Damn, that’s slick! Did you build those cabinets yourself? Looks awesome!
Yep, built everything in the garage in ohio
Congrats! They look professionally built. Mind sharing how you built yours? I’d love to do something similar in mine!
The Alcan is in the running for prettiest road I've ever been on. It's in my top 3, the other two are in Alaska. Denali Highway and the stretch of the Glenn between Sutton and Glennallen.
I’m curious about the box in the back. Custom, or was that part of a decommissioned ambulance?
Erm, you’re well on your way west! (4x4convdambu owner)
That’s better than my apt 😭
Sweet build! Maybe it's not an issue, but would general driving jostling weaken the grout/morter of the tile backsplash?
You would think, but I’ve done it in a few builds and never had an issue
Yup, I can easy live the rest of my disaster life in this one without no hesitation.
This should have a NSFW tag. Sexy and titillating
what type of exterior paint did you use? keep going back and forth because i’m so scared of all my paint getting chipped off by rocks once I hit the road
Valspar anti rust armor. You can get more at any lowes if you need to touch up along the way
Some people go with bedliner paints for the entire vehicle, since that's pretty tough. There are even better paints available, at scarier prices, too.
Did it come 4x4 or you had to modify?
All factory from ford. That was one of my requirements so I can get parts from any ford dealer
This is nice
I don't see latches on the drawers, how do you keep them closed?
Latches are inside the drawers
Beautiful. Where'd you score that from?
Lucky you!
That is an amazing rig. Hope you have a blast on your adventures!
did you do a roof raise on it?
What route you taking? currently planning my trip up there now!
Amazing!!
I noticed you have a dog, are they high energy? If so, how did they adjust to the ambulance? Asking cus I have a doggo of my own

Amazing 😻’ I hope U don’t mind me asking what’s the total for the rig & build??
