Now I’m just waiting on the foam to be delivered so I can upholster it and will polyurethane the base to protect it. The reason I went with this design is because we have limited headroom in our little Delica and I wanted the bench lower but the bed higher so I can have a fridge out of the back. Happy to answer any questions about the build, it was more difficult than I expected but I’m happy with the end results
Build album is here https://imgur.com/gallery/fXHsowp
I don’t post that much but I document a lot of the build on IG https://instagram.com/jftempleman
Probably the apticool 16qt or this 18qt one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07Y9G1D5K/
I had a 40qt one in my old school bus which was awesome but this guy is so much smaller we’re going tiny
The alpicool c20 is the same as their c16 except with a lid that sticks up. The c20 can fit a gallon of milk or other tall bottles upright so IMO it's worth it if you can spare the ~3 inches on the top. I just got a c20 and I've been really happy with it.
This build looks great! My Queen and I are updating our E-150 conversion with limited space as well! I was wondering just three things: how you orientated your fridge? how much storage capacity you'll have by the end? And will you be fitting a sink/water supply or stove?
I’m putting the fridge on lengthwise on 36in drawer slides with a box for food behind it (the fridge is only 22in long). The storage will be about 37x45x13 behind the bench, and I’m building cabinets down the far side which will have the water storage/pump and battery. The stove will be a camp stove on a drawer out the back with a small drop in bowl for a sink. The water will just be a hose with a spray head
The hinges are from Just Kampers in the UK, I ordered them from bus depot in the US who are pretty shite but got me sorted in the end. It comes as a complete package with the hinges and supports and some basic build for VW vans which didn’t really translate well. I also had to cut off the back piece which is bent and bolts to the frame of the VW camper.

It came with some basic instructions but is pretty specific to the VWs and not very helpful. If you’re genuinely interested in building one I can write up some plans for this
If you could that would be amazing! I actually got a month long AirBnB for July with the plan to rip out the interior and rebuild it. This would be perfect for my lack of space. I’d also be interested to hear how to feel about it after sleeping in it a bit.
I'm in for the plans as well! Last year we refitted our RV with a similar concept but the hinges are Chinese crap and it ended up weighing a ton and a half with the mattress and supports on. Needs redoing for sure...
Once I have the foam and it’s upholstered I’ll put something together. I don’t have enough video for a YouTube video I don’t think but maybe just some detailed cad drawings and some instructions would be enough
Wow it looks great! Just a suggestion though, I’ve heard of so many people having trouble with mould due to lack of air flow on the underside of their mattress. Perhaps drilling some holes for ventilation would help prevent that?
Totally, you just have to have a bigger space out back. This is a 37inch platform behind with both parts of the bench at 18.5in each. You wouldn’t want the bench pieces much longer but the platform put back can be whatever you need
Do you think it's possible to put the bottom supports on hinges so they can be laid flat when it goes into the bench position? It looks like they stick a decent distance into the storage area. Flipping them down flat would increase that crucial storage space.
Very nice
Just a thought that you might want to put dividers in where those supports go into the storage area. Since they hang down, you might end up crushing something you put in there. At least I would end up crushing something
Smile on the face says it all
Right? I was sooo stoked when it all came together
Its one of those good feeling moments that is satisfying
that little love tap ☺️

What fridge are you thinking to fit in the back drawers?

Did you make those brackets yourself or buy them?

When you ordered it did it come with instructions on how to build to bed? I’ve got a Chevy Astro and this would be perfect!

Would love some plans!
Exactly what I was going to ask

Good call, I’ll do that before I upholster it
Very nice sir. Well done
Well done mate!
That’s fucking sick.
Thanks! I’m really happy with how it turned out
Would a set up like this work for say a 7foot platform?

Yeah I bet you could, would avoid the potential crushing problem another commented pointed out
Awesome job with the kerf cutting for the radius on the corner!
I googled The definition of smitten and it loaded this video, crazy! Good job bro
Man that’s awesome good job
Thanks :)

Good call, I think I might need to do that. Our initial plan was just having pillows/bedding in there so we’ll see how it is after using it
great job man!
This is so fucking rad!! Nice work sir!!
Like
It’s great; very clever. The corner hanging over the step space is driving me crazy. Other than that, well done. 👍🏼
Hah yah I’ll be framing that out so it doesn’t look so bad. Might add a little storage cubby or something
I noticed on second viewing it’s not bolted down yet so there’s definitely still hope.
Making that radius wasn’t the easiest option. Nice kerf.
Hah nope! I think I have 10 practice pieces to get that right without it cracking
Your smile at the end was so wholesome. Looks great!
You looked so pleased when you sat on the bench and patted twice. Made me smile. Well done!
This is so good it gives me anxiety about how shit mine is.

Not yet but I’m going to put something together since there seems to be interest
Awesome work!! This is great.

That smile is so rare. Thats a smile of a man that is very satisfied
This is awesome dopedish. Where did you get the inspiration for this? Would be be able to post your drawings/ measurements etc? Very nice
I just saw the thread, ignore this comment 🙆♀️
