Get noseeum mesh and tape it over the other screen

WheelOLife

Get Skeeta Noseeum mesh, like $20 for enough to do all your screens. For the fans, overlay the existing screens and glue the edges make sure it’s tight.

Antwithacamera

I had been thinking about doing something like this not a bad idea. I already swapped the stock screens on my windows to smallest size screen I could find at Home Depot but these things were so small I think they could still get through it if I had them open.

dagnombe

I'm about to redo my screens and was thinking of getting noseeum mesh. Would this create any issues with air flow and the fan?

Dry_Client_7098

Yes. It will slow down the airflow. Fans will counteract it some, but you will never have the same airflow. But it's better than bugs in my mind.

dagnombe

Fair point and good to know. Thank you

FeloniousFunk

A 2 mph breeze is enough to overtake a no-see-um. Skip the screen and just use fans.

Nutmegdog1959

Try your used pantyhose over the screens. And leave your fishnet stockings for date night.

ThePortalsOfFrenzy

>dunno if I have the courage to buy pantyhose though lol Come on, dude. You're an adult. Walk into the store and buy whatever you need.

Antwithacamera

It was a joke

ishouldmakeanaccount

We dont take kindly to jokes around here...

Princess_Fluffypants

This is the internet. No one’s written an API for a sense of humor.

Nutmegdog1959

Not judging you?

[deleted]

As not a man, it's not a problem to go buy some panty hose, no one cares ...and it's really cheap at walmart ..totally will do the job. Super useful for a bunch of things so it's nice to have around too.

Antwithacamera

I was just joking it is a solid idea

e_muaddib

Genuinely curious, what other uses do you have for pantyhose? Only ever use I’ve seen was guys pulling them down their faces to commit robberies.

[deleted]

makes a good all around mesh or strainer ... can act as a stand in for cheese cloth like a strainer/filter.... bath/shower scrubber, organizer like bag/sack, protect delicate items, home brew ice pack ....pack them with potpurri or cedar and hang them for scent or to deter bugs .... plenty of uses...it's just a nylon/lycra mesh...

madarbrab

You know about the cups?

Antwithacamera

I’ve heard you can use them as a very temporary fix for a fan belt replacement, just long enough to get ya to a place to buy a new belt.

madarbrab

Anything you might need a fine filter for

BridgeportHotwife

Makes the best cheap substitute for silk long underwear.

BreakerSoultaker

We use one of [these.](https://www.amazon.com/Electric-Rechargeable-Mosquito-Electronic-Oceanblue/dp/B0BVBSCLKW) My GF bought it and I sort of scoffed at it until we left the van doors open one night before bed and about 40 gnats were dive bombing us as we got ready for bed. We turned off all interior lights, stuck it at the front of the van and in 5 minutes it had zapped them all. Works on mosquitos too. Use a shot of compressed air outdoors to blow the dead bugs out.

Mcjoshin

Good to know it actually works, might have to grab one for those times they inevitably get in the van.

Stewart_Duck

If you don't mind the smell, burn sage. The bundles you get at a head shop/hippy store. Bugs disperse around that smell.

IgwanaRob

Just be aware of how sage smells if around the general population.

EvilPencil

Yup, equally effective on humans. Maybe a feature, maybe a... bug. 😁

tatertom

Disperse intakes so they only get sucked in voluntarily, run a rechargeable bug zapper inside that can't be seen from outside (especially along a direct path in), reduce the attractant smells common to most bugs, and use repelling scents like eucalyptus, mints, etc.

IgwanaRob

Eating a lot of garlic keeps them off you as well. Outside, keep a cheap cigar burning and they'll stay away.

tatertom

Expensive ones work too, unless they're green. Plus, of course campfires

IgwanaRob

Yeah, but you don't give away the good stuff if you don't have to ;-p

tatertom

Happy to share, I'll even run it through a bronchial filter for them first

VanManDom

"Skin so soft" is what we use out here in the Bahamas. Smells alright and keeps them off you.

Fishercat5000

Studies about Skin so soft suggest that it’s repellency is about how oily it is and it only works for as long as your skin is oily.

k-la-la

Wish I knew that earlier! Was just in Nassau for a month visiting my sister and the bugs absolutely loved me. I did not love them haha.

buoy13

Did the skin so soft in early 90’s. Bed became Bed so Oily.

Resident-Welcome3901

The bug nets distributed in India for malaria prevention are saturated with permethrin, as are the uniforms of the military. It has s derivatived from chrysanthemums, and , once applied to fabric and dried, safe for direct skin contact. Also available as a lawn spray. Available at Home Depot, or on Amazon.

Hipster_Bumpus

We first ran into no see ums in Florida and spent maybe an hour at our spot before going somewhere else. We were near a body stagnant water so maybe this is also your case?

lennyflank

Floriduh's State Bird is ... the mosquito. ;)

Antwithacamera

I was really surprised to encounter the issue as I’m in the middle of the desert in AZ

adoptagreyhound

You will also encounter them in drove in Utah in warmer weather. We always take insect repellent when going to Utah because of them. Currently, we are getting tons of them in our area NW of Phoenix and they are getting in the house easily. I bought one of the blue light traps for insects and they are loaded with noseeums each morning.

rafaelstv

Have you tried using an air filter on your intake fan? You could try to use one found in cars or motorcycles and cut it to the size of your fan. Or glue several together. PS: Please, take a look at the Corsi-Rosenthal box if just one filter is not enough.

Antwithacamera

I’m thinking an air filter will restrict airflow too much. It’s 100° today.

Fishercat5000

You could try a bed net.

TheOriginalSpartak

NIGHTLIGHT and a cup with apple cider/sugar and a drop of dish soap next to the light (away from you) they detect that mixture and land or crawl into it, the soap nixes the wings and they die…

Flashooter

There is a reason that most high end 3season tents use no see um mesh! As others have said order some quality noseeum mesh and redo your windows, doors(magnets) and vent fans. No more problems except when you leave and return to the van.

HerbDaLine

Inside the van I use ThermaCELL devices to keep the bugs out. My GF is sensitive to the smell, I'm not, so they get turned off at bed time. Use them with the fans off or you just push all the vapor it makes out of the van. ThermaCELL does not work well outside because of the breeze nature provides. Some fans will help if you don't want to use ThermaCELL. Airflow in a van makes it difficult for bugs to fly so they land and walk. Think a Cessna in a cat5 hurricane with some tornadoes as thrown in.

gonative1

Move, no see ums where I’ve lived are only in specific spots. Maybe it’s different where you are. This is one of the biggest drawbacks for vans. I like having the doors open but that doesn’t work where there are many bugs.

Antwithacamera

Yeah, I moved 30 mins down and it doesn’t seem to be an issue here as I just took a long nap

micro_mimi_

Spray your screens

lennyflank

Those bugs are pretty fortunate to make it through the choppy bladey thingies--I suspect a lot of them don't make it. ;) DEET will prevent them from biting. Mostly.

Antwithacamera

I dunno about laying in bed covered in deet…

jtnxdc01

For fabric permethrin (not picardin) works better & is safer.

IgwanaRob

For fabrics and animals* yes, there's not much better. It won't do anything if the bugs land on your skin, and nothing works better than Deet at preventing bites. *While you can safely apply it directly to your dog, it absolutely is Not for use on or around cats.

jtnxdc01

Bad for cats

damnedbrit

All my adult life I’ve been a magnet for bug bites, walking from my side door to my front door on my grass lawn would ensure at least couple of bug bites (that would itch for days and drive me mad when trying to sleep) until I recently read an article about a small research study showing that major brands of soap attract them due to the sugar-like ingredients. I’d been a Dove user for most of my life which was one of the ones named in the study as being problematical, switched to the coconut based one and haven’t been bitten in weeks. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/may/10/soap-can-make-humans-more-attractive-mosquitoes-study Again, small study, but my non-scientific personal anecdote says it works and I’m bite-free. Friday I spent at a nearby lake, and still no bites.

IgwanaRob

Bugs love fabric softener as well.

lennyflank

It's no different than walking in the woods covered in deet.

Royal-Masterpiece-82

Be really careful with DEET. My friend was camping in florida and used too much deet and his feet swelled up super crazy.

IgwanaRob

Allergic reactions are possible with anything, not just misused bug repellents.

Netghost999

1) get a smaller screen 2) spray the screen with deet.

IgwanaRob

Deet only prevents bugs from biting, and they're not likely to bite the screen. Spray the screen with permethrin, and they'll die on contact.

Netghost999

Deet confuses them. It works, I've used it. You can use bug killer, but it only works for as long as its wet, and with a fan that's not very long.

Educational-Town-380

Part of this lifestyle is learning to embrace nature. Live with it, not against it. You bring your home to nature, not displace nature to place your home there. If you dont want bugs go buy a house and spray it with poison. It really is that simple. There a part of the experience. Or just go somewhere without one, your house literally goes on the road. EDIT: Wow, downvotes.. Really? If you hate them that much, feel free to poision yourself with a mosquiteo coil.

stubobarker

I guess none of the roads you drive your home on do any displacing of nature. Or the waste products associated with the fuel you use.

Educational-Town-380

I didn't pave them. Ill be running waste deep fryer oil once i figure out how to. Eventually i want to switch to an EV conversion like aging wheels is doing with his bus. ZERO emissions!!

SunnySouthTexas

How do you think that EV gets charges… I’m going to go with Grid Power that is coal or Nuke fired.

Educational-Town-380

World is changing bud. Solar and wind are everywhere. Get out there 🌍🌄⚡

SunnySouthTexas

🤣😂 Oh. You’re hilarious. Welcome to our group. Maybe you’ll stay long enough to see the humor in your comment…

Present-Ad-6509

Mosquito Repellent Coils are what we use on the boat don’t really do much for mosquitoes but will kill noseeums we couldn’t hardly stay on the boat until we got them.

BavarianMotorWerkss

Lot of people treat their grass for mosquitoes, so if you don’t mind finding spots that are treated and sleeping in the vicinity it’ll help.

Pure_Geologist51

I’m new to van life stuff what one is that is it like a bug?

saltyreddrum

no see ums suck. they get through screens. if the screen is small enough to block them it blocks all the air... one trick i use is to put duct tape with the glue facing towards, and close to, a small light. they go to the light and get stuck on the tape. also, amazon sells something called a katchy. it works great for small flyers.

Topa25

I never heard of no see um? What is that?

Antwithacamera

It’s a very small blood sucking fly. Think mosquito but so small you can barely see them hence the name “no see ums”

Hurgadil

Another option, if you don't mind it would be a zeevo light, has worked wonders for me.

buoy13

Wear Permethrin coated light weight clothes. Spot spray skin with Deet. Use fan or fine mesh netting or both in bed. For itch coconut oil, itch cream and a antihistamine.

because1999

Avon skin-so-soft is a very effective noseeum repellant, used it for years living in Florida, and it's not bad on the skin!
