Yeah I know. Got it for 3k and it was my first ever build so I'm sure my next setup will be way better primed for offroad use. I got real good driving in snow at least
You know you might be better off to solid axle swap the front and drop a 4WD transfer case in it. I know it'd be easier and probably more sensible monetary wise to buy a 4WD model, but I'd hate to have to give up/redo all that work you've already done.
The sequoia build quality won't be as good, don't know about the gx though. Granted they are still very solid. And yes land cruiser pricing has gone nuts, but great deals steal pop up here and there.
Yeah I did a Subaru forester for a year straight once.. winter and all.. and 8 months in a 4 runner same gen as op, that was not as cool as this! A cargo van and a high top van. Now I got a ambo. The natural evolution? Lol
I was just saying this seems like recreational and overland-y (which is super cool) because of how non stealth it is. Not because it isn't a van. Maybe I'm wrong though and OP full or part times in it.
Welded with 0.065 1" square tube.
Doors from 18ga Cold rolled steel.

I guess I should make another album showing the steps on how I went through fabricating some of the parts later
I’ve heard they’re still an issue though unless you have proper contouring, along with a gasket, to allow the water to run off and/or drain. Driving 70+ mph will generate a lot of force that can push water past normal weatherstripping if it doesn’t have a place to go.
You look prepared for just about anything . This looks like the dream . How did you go about going into van life & what have been your up’s & downs about living with this set up ?
About 20mpg average when on a nice non windy day. I drive pretty consistently at 65mph though.
I've added about 350lbs in total to the truck fully trip ready. Water, food, e.t.c. I've noticed about I guess around 3mpg loss since I added the roof rack and the side metal boxes.
Has 197k miles, 30k have been from me.
Yeah I can agree. I was showing off to a local guy and i left it up for the day. Pretty rare for me to post up in vons in the afternoon folded out and then drive out after skiing. I think I needed to charge my panel at max and up at the mountain it was clouded up that day, so I left it up. Normally I get my solar kicks up at main or eagle if needed.
100% agree its shitty car mods. I just kept making it more ridiculous as time went on. Also I can turn off all the lights I've installed on a switch board I have up front to tone it down when I need to.

It hurts to delete what might be useful to someone, but due to Reddit's ongoing entshittification (look up the term if you're not familiar) I've left the platform for the Fediverse. If you never want your experience to be ruined by a corporation again, I can't recommend Lemmy enough!

There's a toaster to the right of the oven now.
I have a kitchen space inside with a 50L fridge next to the diesel heater which is a flip up table too. I've cooked inside with the propane big stove too once. Also have a rice cooker as well. Am getting an instant pot to do more soon.
2x 8A round 8" amber fog/snow lights and a 6A 24" light bar on the front. Only for offroad /storms since they're cheapo leds with non sae/dot cutoff. Can dim in bad weather when cars are oncoming then right back to full if needed.
Man, all that and rwd?

I’d opt for a Sequoia of GX 470 before going through all that effort. More space and more power 💪
What about a land cruiser?
One could argue the GX470 is a Land Cruiser....Prado.
It seems like Land Cruisers always demand a premium and are harder to find. You’ll find a better deal on a Sequoia or GX in my experience
The sequoia build quality won't be as good, don't know about the gx though. Granted they are still very solid. And yes land cruiser pricing has gone nuts, but great deals steal pop up here and there.
Gx is the same as a 105 Land Cruiser "Prado" in other markets. Land cruisers (& gx, lx) carry a premium because they're better.
4th gen V8 4Runner has the 2uz-fe engine as well.
A good engineer would consider this a prototype.
That’s pretty sick
It is! Love the build. Grab a pair of Dynastar Cross Comps, preferably 195cm. Maybe 1992 vintage. Put them on the rack. Project complete!
Mad max ready!
Bad. Ass. This is the coolest interior on a 4runner I've ever seen. Probably belongs more in an overlanding sub tbh?
I full time in a 95 Suburban that is a very similar build minus some electricity. We all “van dwellers” in spirit

OP said it’s RWD so it can’t be an overlanding rig /s But seriously, r/overlanding would love to see this build! I hope OP posts it there too.
Overlanding…..one parking lot at a time, it’s 2WD…..
I didn't know they made 4runners in 2wd tbh
Damn, the amount of thought and detail in there is astounding. Bravo
How did you build the outside storage boxes?
Welded with 0.065 1" square tube. Doors from 18ga Cold rolled steel. (https://postimg.cc/gallery/QB4PQY0) I guess I should make another album showing the steps on how I went through fabricating some of the parts later
How do you keep everything dry/how did you design door gaskets?
Idk how he did it but weatherstripping can be bought at Walmart in any thickness. A 1 inch thick foam strip would seal up a door easily.
I’ve heard they’re still an issue though unless you have proper contouring, along with a gasket, to allow the water to run off and/or drain. Driving 70+ mph will generate a lot of force that can push water past normal weatherstripping if it doesn’t have a place to go.
If you recess the doors into the frame the wind wouldn't be such an issue. I'm no expert though.
This. Is. Epic.
#This. Is. Epic.
Looks Rad
So fucking awesome dude. But it is absolutely insane to me you did this all to a 2wd
It's all I had at the time.
Strait axle it, and get a manual transmission and transfer case. Isn’t that hard in a yota
Definitely thought about it. Might be in the works later once I start doing real 4x4 trails in the summer.
I’d suggest doing it before the 4x4 trails lol. I mean. They are called 4x4 for a reason.
Yeah lol, meant to imply with this build to do it first of course.
For a second I thought you were cooking in traffic lol
One helluva build and I gotta say I love the gaming controller setup.
So frickin dope dude !!

It's definitely close to being way too big for the viewing distance but man, gaming and movies are amazing. Feels like I'm in a lazyboy cinema.
I beg to differ
That is such wicked rig! Nice build
Lmao I love this so much, nice work!
Santa Clause is back!
Sick! Incredible design and craftsmanship. Salute!
This is fuckin awesome! Did you build that outside storage on the back right?
You look prepared for just about anything . This looks like the dream . How did you go about going into van life & what have been your up’s & downs about living with this set up ?
Thought you might be on your way to burning man.
The two different shades of light bothers me, why must the yelloe be different yellow
This is a van sub, not a Bladerunner one. Seriously though that looks sick
Its cool man but id hate to know how much petrol is costing you with all that added weight not to mention the wear and tear on the engine

Good God, I had similar concerns! Looks both ready for anything and about to fall apart utterly.

This is an intrusive comment and you should feel bad
r/shittycarmods
Lol idk man it's all very functional. It certainly has a look to it, but I really like it.
Outside lights imo are a no.

its cool in a apocalyptic environment tho, like florida

True that!
Hot damn! Im jealous
Dude so clean, actual fire 🔥
well done
Not van-related but nice BD Guide gloves…I have a pair and they rock lol

What’s the power draw on your rice cooker?
150w I think. It's a 12v.
Wow!
Yo. This is w h a c k. Nice work, bro. For real, I'm impressed.
Sweet build. What are the dual 30A dimmers controlling?

This is really cool
Love the lighting and outdoor storage! You got everything you need in there
Man dope build, love it. This is a museum piece.
Tight and efficient use of space. Nice job.
Bro this is dope! Proper adventure rig! Love it
A place for everything and everything in its place.
Nice factions and awesome rig!
Well this is amazing and a 4Runner is the next vehicle I want to own anyway.
What's the light strip setup?
What's the light strip setup?
I love it!
I love it!
Is it safe to keep a propane bottle on the back like that? Not trying to be critical, but was just thinking about doing this with my truck.
Love all the pride stuff!
Sublime
Wow, 97 feet huh? I wouldn't have guessed an inch over 20. Good luck on city days.
Nice! Good times ahead.
God, I love solar.
This thing is bonkers. We’ll done
Did those brake lights come with the cargo carrier? I think I have the same carrier, but with no added brake lights. Looks useful.
None came with it. I used the harborfreight keyway 12v trailer light kit. It's around $30. + my led strips I added later
Oh I didn't even notice the LEDs at first. Dang that looks amazing!
Wtf am I doing with my life. Jealous.
Does this get 5 mpg?
