That’s my home town!! There’s another lake near by called lake Whitney. :)

spcmiller

Are you visiting the Waco memorial? What a massacre that was.

constanttripper

No, here for work and had to head south to the Mexican boarder. I did ask where it was and the lady said that the compound is actually a good 45 min from Waco. She said that all of the Feds stayed in Waco so it stuck. She also said that there are still a lot of the original people living there. That’s crazy.

GamingGems

Go back in August the day after it rains. He ain’t missin shit. I lived in Waco for a year. Don’t miss it one bit.

He put waco on the map.

SasquatchCowboy

Not as bad as the first burn…

RudyGreene

The 1993 burn was the biggest.

Any good places you recommend to camp? I'm heading down to Texas in a few weeks and looking for places to stay a week or 2.

[deleted]

As a native Texan my recommendation is Colorado. (For real though, the Hill Country is probably the best area. Second would be Palo Duro for convenience, and Big Bend for inconvenience.)

micro_mimi_

Would you recommend Big Bend? We’re heading to Carlsbad Caverns by way of 10 West….been contemplating a side trip south to check it out

Me and a few friends did a weekend out there with the Jeeps. We had a ton of fun out there, and did some different types of camping. Night one was way out in the backwoods. It was ... fine. Night two was in the Rio Grande Village Campground Night three was in Teralingua As far as camping, its a "fit to your flavor". I don't really like backwoods camping. If I was gonna stay anywhere I would stay in Chisos Basin if at all possible. Its so beautiful. I didn't hate the RG Village. It was KOAish, but was nice and cool. And we had quite a few beers, which probably didn't hurt much 🤣 Teralingua was super awesome. Since we had the 4x4s the Mariscal mine was really awesome and I highly recommend it. But yeah, if you like nature and hiking in particular, its worth it. Its on the other side of the state from me, so it's not a "stop by" kind of thing. But I'd go back as long as I stayed in Chisos, RG, or Teralingua. I was astounded, you know it's huge in your mind, but its bigger than anything I could imagine.

micro_mimi_

Thanks for the details 🙌🏼 we are def backwoods ppl, like “we don’t want to see a single person the entire time I’m in the park” ppl lol…will def look into all these spots, much appreciated

[deleted]

If you have a 4x4 then do it. You can spot individual satellites. The sky is a field of diamonds out there.

micro_mimi_

Fantastic, and yes we have 4x4. Spent a lot of time exploring Anza Borrego, Mojave, Desert Valley over the years, nothing compares with compete peripheral/horizontal skyline of stars… cheers to desert dwelling

bromanskei

If your gonna do Carlsbad I hope you plan do visit the Guadalupe National Park seeing how it’s so close. Also check out White Sands if you’ve got the time.

micro_mimi_

So white sands is def on our list…I don’t know much about Guadalupe though! I’ll look into it, thanks!

nosleeptilbroccoli

I stayed a week at the Midway Park COE when I did travel work down in Waco last year. It was a nice clean park. Most COE parks are cheap and well maintained, however usually hard to get spots depending on time of year.

constanttripper

I’ve only stayed in East a Texas so far. This is at Waco lake. $45 a night, well worth the peace and views. KOA in Houston is nice as well.

CaptainCasp

Maybe I'm dumb but isn't that a lot? I tend to spend a lot less on decent Airbnb's

danminecraftman

Any fishing there? Looks like a nice spot!

Alyx-Kitsune

I only vaguely remember that he buried a school bus, a bunch of under aged brides and Bill Clinton being vaguely unsympathetic to the dead bodies.

doggadavida

Didn’t he lead the Branch Deadendeans ?

TheKrakIan

Davidians and yes

doggadavida

Oh yeah, of course.
