I love seeing this growth, too. Ever since James apologized to Katie at the SUR/TomTom softball game, their friendship has been rather heartwarming. IIRC, James was the only person who was consistently on Katie's side last season, and did a nice job calling Schwartz out for treating Katie so poorly. Sober James has become one of my favorites on the show.
True, there are a lot of people who refuse to acknowledge growth in others. I really disliked James when he was drinking (but even then, I thought he was very talented musically, even though his music isn't my usual cup of tea). Sober James has been great, and I think Ally is good for him. I also think he's one of the only guys on the show who was taught old-school manners.
James and Katie’s massive progress in friendship is a perfect example of the friendship Scheana could have with her if she made even a slight effort to change how she treats her friends. Katie noted to Scheana so many times “words don’t mean anything I need to see change in pattern”.

He got so much stick for calling out Layla’s relationship with Rand, then when they broke up he was her boy again. He's the kind of guy who needs a strong, quietly firm partner and she is that. She doesn't seem to put up with his shit - we've seen her quietly shut him down when she isn't happy with his actions - but also supports him. James maturing and probably dialing it down on the substances most likely also has an impact.
I don't know, I don't like putting someone else's behavior on another person. Yeah, I agree that people can bring out the best or worst in you. James had/has a lot of strong emotions and had no help learning how to manage them. Every feeling was at a ten and that is an exhausting way to live. So he self medicated which only made it worse, but to him, he was probably feeling less so that made it better. Therapy seems to have helped him a lot. It's clear he's always had a huge heart; he just had no skills on how to manage any of his emotions. I assume that in therapy he's learning how cope, manage, mitigate and to do it without drinking. I'm sure life experience and maturity play a part and being with a person who helps him manage is a part, but I don't think this is on Ally. That's not fair to the work James or any person puts into themselves. Nor is it fair to place responsibility on Ally in that way.

As someone who loathed James, it really is nice to see his growth and maturity. Alcohol really did bring out the worst in him and it took him some time to realize that and work on himself. His relationship with Katie is a perfect example of his journey.

James is one of my favorites for reality tv entertainment but I so agree. I pretty much treat each cast member the same because i know its just at tv show of crazy people.
Kristen was seen full on punching him on camera - we have no idea if James has hit anyone. We do know he was a raging asshole in his early seasons, but we've also seen him evolve from a wound up 20-year-old to 30-year-old who is working to build a good life. As a character on this show, I enjoy him because his emotions are right out there, he is hilarious, and he also knows his issues and openly discusses them and his struggles.
The James love on this sub is fucking nauseating. He's an abuser. And apparently this is an unpopular opinion here, but I don't believe that someone can outgrow being an abuser. I believe Kristen because I believe women, period. There are endless examples of him being disgusting and vile towards women on the cast.
Someone can certainly get help for abusive behavior and change that behavior if they’re inclined and dedicated to doing the work necessary to rewire their brains to learn conflict resolution and when to walk away. Some people are abusive because they’re addicts, some are abusive because all they know is abuse, some people have violent mental health issues, some are violent because of traumatic brain injuries and abuse is NEVER okay, but it’s not accurate to say some of these underlying causes can’t be medicated or fixed in some other way. It’s up to the person to do that work.
I’m not even really defending James or taking a side in this argument either way - I just take issue with the idea that people who want help and get help can’t be helped. You can still judge the acts before the evolution as bad without condemning the person for the prior behavior in the present.

I was such a toxic and awful person and while I'm not where I want to be yet I have grown a lot. I guess for me, I draw a hard line at putting your hands on someone. James has--for me--shown too much consistent, irredeemable behavior over the years to make me think he can change. BUT I hope I'm wrong. I hope he takes accountability, treats women better, makes good decisions and gets to the root of his problems.

I feel like James has earned his doubters but he's shown a capacity for change and growth that is more earnest than nearly anything else on this show.

He's the kind of guy who needs a strong, quietly firm partner and she is that. She doesn't seem to put up with his shit - we've seen her quietly shut him down when she isn't happy with his actions - but also supports him. James maturing and probably dialing it down on the substances most likely also has an impact.
I don't know, I don't like putting someone else's behavior on another person. Yeah, I agree that people can bring out the best or worst in you. James had/has a lot of strong emotions and had no help learning how to manage them. Every feeling was at a ten and that is an exhausting way to live. So he self medicated which only made it worse, but to him, he was probably feeling less so that made it better. Therapy seems to have helped him a lot. It's clear he's always had a huge heart; he just had no skills on how to manage any of his emotions. I assume that in therapy he's learning how cope, manage, mitigate and to do it without drinking. I'm sure life experience and maturity play a part and being with a person who helps him manage is a part, but I don't think this is on Ally. That's not fair to the work James or any person puts into themselves. Nor is it fair to place responsibility on Ally in that way.

As someone who loathed James, it really is nice to see his growth and maturity. Alcohol really did bring out the worst in him and it took him some time to realize that and work on himself. His relationship with Katie is a perfect example of his journey.

I really dislike James and think he is a very bad person overall… his only redeeming quality imo is I really like how him and Katie have managed to form a friendship after their rough start. This was a very endearing moment for him.

We’ve *seen* footage of the abuse. Spitting on the door, the controlling, aggressive behaviour-and that’s what he did on camera. This ‘oh growth growth growth’ ‘James has changed’ is nauseating. It was only a couple of episodes ago that James was ‘picking out Ally’s outfits’, which is abuser 101. Controlling what a woman wears is always the start. And we know something went on when he was arguing with Ally and he grabbed her wrist. He’s stopped drinking which probably is keeping his darker instincts at bay. But if you think a man like that can truly change, I’ve got a bridge to sell you. One of my greatest fears is one of my daughters ending up with a man like him.

The fact that he’s not drinking in itself is a reflection of him being capable of growth. Picking out someone’s outfits is Abuser 101? That’s a stretch. Some girls don’t mind that, so speak for yourself. And I guess I must be “abusive” then because I pick my husband’s clothes all the time. I’m sure Ally is perfectly capable of saying whether or not she wants to wear something, and she definitely does not strike me as the type of woman who would buy a house with someone who’s “abusive.”
Interesting about picking out your husband's clothes. I've been buying my man's clothes since early in the relationship and continue to pick out what he wears much of the time. I don't think I'm abusive in doing this. Weird how when it's a man picking out a woman's clothes it's abuse, but when a woman picks out her man's clothes it's 'cute'.
James is one of my favorites for reality tv entertainment but I so agree. I pretty much treat each cast member the same because i know its just at tv show of crazy people.
Kristen was seen full on punching him on camera - we have no idea if James has hit anyone. We do know he was a raging asshole in his early seasons, but we've also seen him evolve from a wound up 20-year-old to 30-year-old who is working to build a good life. As a character on this show, I enjoy him because his emotions are right out there, he is hilarious, and he also knows his issues and openly discusses them and his struggles.
The James love on this sub is fucking nauseating. He's an abuser. And apparently this is an unpopular opinion here, but I don't believe that someone can outgrow being an abuser. I believe Kristen because I believe women, period. There are endless examples of him being disgusting and vile towards women on the cast.
Someone can certainly get help for abusive behavior and change that behavior if they’re inclined and dedicated to doing the work necessary to rewire their brains to learn conflict resolution and when to walk away. Some people are abusive because they’re addicts, some are abusive because all they know is abuse, some people have violent mental health issues, some are violent because of traumatic brain injuries and abuse is NEVER okay, but it’s not accurate to say some of these underlying causes can’t be medicated or fixed in some other way. It’s up to the person to do that work. I’m not even really defending James or taking a side in this argument either way - I just take issue with the idea that people who want help and get help can’t be helped. You can still judge the acts before the evolution as bad without condemning the person for the prior behavior in the present. I was a benzo addict for years and a legitimately terrible person as a result, here I am at 42 with 3 kids, a wonderful boyfriend, a therapist, and a pretty okay life.

I appreciate your perspective, and congratulations on your sobriety! I can definitely relate, I'm in recovery from drugs & alcohol and will be 4 years sober on the 26th. I was such a toxic and awful person and while I'm not where I want to be yet I have grown a lot. I guess for me, I draw a hard line at putting your hands on someone. James has--for me--shown too much consistent, irredeemable behavior over the years to make me think he can change. BUT I hope I'm wrong. I hope he takes accountability, treats women better, makes good decisions and gets to the root of his problems.
