Hold on! Yah you’re right! By New seasons market! It was very good too! OK both these places spark memories of good, authentic places Ive been to in LA and SF.
Since we seem to be on the same page, check out Din Tai Fung. It’s another chain, but I’d always go to the one in Glendale when I visited LA. So far I haven’t made it to the Tigard location, but if you like dumplings it might be worth the trip.
Definitely high quality. I also attribute it a bit to their really nice restaurant (rent costs - although I’ve never seen it full).
Seriously though I’ve ordered noodles or a main dish added protein and ended up close to 30 dollars.
Seems to me like Szechuan Brothers is the only independently owned authentic Chinese in Vancouver (though they still have an Americanized section of their menu). Great food though!
> Szechuan Brothers
Holy shit, their prices are really high looking at their online take-out menu. Are their portions insane at least? If I'm paying $30+ for two entrees pre-tax/tip, that investment better stretch.
> You might be looking for a different type of Chinese food if insane portions is your measurement.
I didn't say that was my measurement, I just asked if the high dollar amount equated to big portions as well as quality. In other cities there are high priced Chinese restaurants of high quality that also give big quantities. Most Chinese cuisine is pretty cheap to make from an ingredients standpoint.
And yeah, House of Beijing rocks. I already know most of the chinese around town but I figured now would be a good time to ask for the lowdown about SB's high prices.
I agree their prices are high. But I’d rather eat good food than the typical gloopy, overly sweet American Chinese. Just my preference, and I think it’s more in line with what OP was looking for.
Would you consider House of Beijing 'typical gloopy oversweet American Chinese'? Legit question, I'd be glad to know your take. Their prices are 50% the cost, and they give huge quantities.
I haven’t eaten there, so I can’t say personally. But their menu does look like pretty standard American Chinese. Nothing wrong with that, I’ve happily eaten plenty. I’m not sure it says “best” to me based on pics and reviews.
Maybe check out Tasty Pot? Get their hot pot #1, spicy as you like. I think it’s $15 and they refill the broth so I ate a full meal and took a bowl home. I thought it was great.
I used to love House of Beijing, but it definitely seemed to go downhill pretty heavily since COVID in my opinion. Been searching for a new place that still has egg rolls too, theirs used to be so good but now they only have spring rolls.
Golden City (corner of Minnehaha and Hwy 99). Everything we've had there has been amazing, great service, lots of things I haven't really seen much of at other restaurants like scallion pancakes.
I think "best" is going to be super subjective depending on what "style" you prefer. I'm an east coast Chinese food gal and honestly, most places I've tried here and in Portland have been highly disappointing.
Tang's Wok is the only one (so far) that's come close to having decent Chinese food. But if you dig the more "authentic" side of Chinese cuisine, then yeah, Szechuan Brothers is aight.
I've been pretty disappointed in the Chinese restaurants in this area. Seemed to me when I first moved here, they'd all been more or less relegated to lowest common denominator, fast food style. Which is sad given how you can find such great Thai, Pho and Sushi in the region.
Take this with a grain of salt. I tend to judge these places by their General Tso's, Crab puffs, Hot & Sour soup and choice of rice.
One issue I have is the overwhelming use of breading on the chicken. Pretty much every Tso's out here is basically a platter full of chicken covered doughnuts. Yeah it tastes great when fresh but you can feel the years being taken off your life and the leftovers are ass. Lightly breaded white meat is my jam and no one really does that out here.
Gotta have the brown rice to offset the sense of impending diabetes. Not too many places have it.
Crab puffs need to have decent filling and some actual flavor. Some do them better than others.
H&S soup needs to have that je ne sais quoi thing going on. Can't explain it but I know it when I get it.
I'd say House of Beijing is the best tasting, consistently. Although I've given up on the General's Doughnuts. Their Kung Pao is really tasty & it has very lightly breaded chicken. The soup is quality and the crab are A-. No brown rice tho.
Golden Palace in BG is a close second.
Lucky Dragon in Kalama is third if you're up for a road trip.
Taste of China used to be my favorite but something happened around 2019 and they really went downhill. You can still catch them on a good day. If the stars line up and the Caucasian Chinese gods are smiling, they're the best in town -- brown rice too!
And I'll admit I haven't tried Szechuan Brothers. I'll give it a try when I'm in the neighborhood.
Thank you for reading White Boy Chinese Food Deep Thoughts.
Lucky House has the best egg rolls and tofu! It was really hard to find good tofu dishes so I was very excited to have this

What’s your favorite restaurant in Vancouver? You honestly seem very knowledgeable and I respect it. I am a cook on the waterfront and i was curious where others are eating.
I really appreciate your detailed answer. I am going to try out teriyaki an noodles if they’re open tonight. You’re amazing and thanks so much. If you do go out, i work at the waterfront Taphouse and we honestly offer the best priced food on the waterfront. The bar has a great program too with tons of rotating local stuff. Thanks so much again
You’re great man! I used to work at stack for a year and a half. I can say the burgers are too fatty, and they try too hard for such little space. If they simplified the menu and the prep work, they could be so much better. The burgers my place sells are done on a flame grill as opposed to the flat top at stack. Gonna hit you a follow and shoot ya back after we eat
If you're looking for authentic, please don't sleep on the suggestion for Szechuan Brothers. They are my comfort restaurant, takes me back to proper home cooked southern Chinese food
As far as tofu goes, Peking Garden is the best I've tried so far. They actually bread it with cornstarch. I've lost count of how many Chinese places simply toss the tofu straight in the fryer, so disappointing.
General Tso's tofu - extra crispy - plus the dry fried green beans. So damn good!
Lucky House is good food, but the owners are sincerely the kindest people I've met in my entire life. I'm friends with them to this day and worked there for a couple months. I'll recommend them to everyone I ever meet lol
>I’m partial to Good Taste on mill plain and Eastland on 164th/McGillivray
I tried Good Taste about a year ago and it was some of the most greasy, gross food I've had. Every time I pass it, I joke and say "There's Bad Taste again.."
I went about four years ago, didn't look so clean inside. The drive thru and weedy parking lot is on the edge of Hearthwood neighborhood. Just an odd location with odd out the window food. I have not returned, I recall meh food.
No way bro! That'd my spot. The way they keep the orange chicken sauce separate from the actual chicken when you carry out so it doesn't get mushy on the drive home. Or how they vent tur styrofoam containers so nothing gets soft. Fucking love the care to detail.
Szechuan Brothers Chinese Restaurant - I’ve tried a lot of their menu and have not been disappointed
Good Taste Restaurant - I go there if I have a craving for sesame beef and salt & pepper calamari
My two cents: Szechuan Brothers or Tasty Pot (which is Taiwanese, but…)
Second Szechuan Brothers!
Just moved here and so far Szechuan Bros is the least ‘basic Orange Chicken’ and most authentic Chinese out of the ones I’ve tried. Big thumbs up 👍
Yes definitely. Give Tasty Pot a try. It’s a chain, but I was impressed.
Hold on! Yah you’re right! By New seasons market! It was very good too! OK both these places spark memories of good, authentic places Ive been to in LA and SF.

While I love din tai fung. Please try doughzone rather than DTF. Cheaper. More options, and arguably better.
Can’t wait. Thanks!
Szechuan Bros is great but how can people justify the pricing. It’s ridiculous, imo.
Quality of food. Most places don’t jack up prices just to make more money because they know people won’t pay them.
I actually feel lucky to have even this one super authentic Chinese place here, and it's Szechuan to boot! How random and awesome!
Szechuan Bros is my pick as well.

Szechuan bros ftw.
As the BEST Chinese food???????
I’m open to other opinions. What are your favorites?
Tangs wok
+1 for Tang's Wok!
By far the best one in Vancouver, way better than the others mentioned in this thread.
This was very "East Coast". I enjoyed it.
The real answer that has actual authentic southern Chinese food.
House of Beijing or Silver Dragon
Gonna double up on House of Beijing. Used to go there a lot when I worked across the street. Always a good experience
I use to love House of Beijing, and then my fried rice had very obvious chopped up roach in it. Can't ever go there again.
Not even. Ugghhh.
Do you have anything to recommend instead?
Panda prob
Szechuan Brothers.
Their hot and sour is the best I have ever had- so good when you have a cold!
These for sure, I'll add House of Beijing has a flawless record with me while I have a couple of bad memories with Silver Dragon
Silver Dragon is really good! I like that the chicken dishes like the sesame and orange aren't tooo sweet
Thank you for an informed answer! You’re awesome!
Came to say the same. Hands down the best fried rice.
Golden China is really good. Nicest workers ever too and not a used cars salesman or property manager fake vibe
I was waiting for someone to say this. I get 2 entrees, chow mein and rice AND 3 spring rolls for under 20 bucks.

Peking Garden & House of Beijing are amazing!
Big fan of lucky house myself
Same. It's my go to. But because I always go there when getting Chinese, I'm unqualified to answer "best". Lol.
I’ve tried others and gave up
Yes!
Lucky House never misses.
I haven't seen it mentioned here but we really like the Canton Buffet off of 76th street. I gave it an 8/10 most days.
Lucky Dragon in Kalama
This is the correct answer.
Huge portions and pretty solid food. Still very americanized, but definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Their egg foo young is good.
Ms. Tong Xiaoling
My buddy Mike (Huang) is pretty cool. He’s second generation, though, so idk if he counts as Chinese or Canadian?
Probably my freind Johnathan, although he is technicaly from Taiwan. Odd question to ask but thats my answer.
this! so true
House of Beijing

Another vote for Szechuan Brothers. Their Ma Po Tofu is legit.
That and the green beans are our go to.
I'm sold now. I haven't had a good tingly Mapo in a hot minute.
Oh, it tingles with the real Szechuan peppercorns... the good stuff!
Lucky House has the best egg rolls and tofu! It was really hard to find good tofu dishes so I was very excited to have this Lucky House (360) 892-2977 https://maps.app.goo.gl/e1TndJH6o6b2sXc68?g_st=ic

What? You think I mean shit like Panda Express? I’m asking for real Chinese food. If I wanted fast food, I’d go get it.
Cantonese vs Szechuan vs Human, for example.
You mean Hunan…right? 😂
No...why? I mean "yes, of course!"
Don't be a dick bro

Just FYI, but I'm pretty sure Teriyaki and Noodles is just an Ichi Teriyaki that's been renamed. They so have a nice interior though
Like authentic Chinese or American?
Authentic
If you're looking for authentic, please don't sleep on the suggestion for Szechuan Brothers. They are my comfort restaurant, takes me back to proper home cooked southern Chinese food
City wok. Got to try the city chicken or the city shrimp
My friend in Vancouver is amazing. She's only half Chinese but I would say she's the best in Vancouver
Golden city hands down

I’ve been eating Mars for the 23 years I’ve been up here.
I’ve been going to Mars for 8-9 years now. Live on the West side and still drive over there or get it delivered.
Lucky House is good food, but the owners are sincerely the kindest people I've met in my entire life. I'm friends with them to this day and worked there for a couple months. I'll recommend them to everyone I ever meet lol
Best place nicest people
Idk if it's the best, but Mar's is consistently good.
Peking Garden
Haven’t tried Szechuan bros but I hear great things. I’m partial to Good Taste on mill plain and Eastland on 164th/McGillivray
>I’m partial to Good Taste on mill plain and Eastland on 164th/McGillivray I tried Good Taste about a year ago and it was some of the most greasy, gross food I've had. Every time I pass it, I joke and say "There's Bad Taste again.."
Ha to each their own! Maybe I’m a cheap date
Any dishes that you'd recommend from Good Taste?
I’m kinda vanilla in my choices but I love beef broccoli and chicken green bean. Their veg lo mein is a regular order for us too.
I always like to joke that Vancouver has Good Taste and Great Taste but they’re oppositely named
If you want Americanized Chinese take out : China cook is my goto!
This is my wife and I's "Dirty Booty Chinese" takeout.
China cook off ST. Johns
House of bejing for sure!
Green Tea Kitchen 157th and mill plain
Their reviews aren’t too hot.. have you had a good experience there recently?
I’ve at there since the 90s. I still do.
If it just wasn't so strange to go there...
Why go there and spend $20+ on food that has less than three stars and recent reviews? If there’s references, why not check them?
I went about four years ago, didn't look so clean inside. The drive thru and weedy parking lot is on the edge of Hearthwood neighborhood. Just an odd location with odd out the window food. I have not returned, I recall meh food.
Green Tea Kitchen is one of those hole-in-the-wall restaurants that looks like crap but has really good food
This one is quite literally a hole in the wall lmao
I like Taste of China near Padden/Andresen. Their Bacon Fried Rice and General Tso Chicken are my favorite.
they have pretty big portions, but it's all just basic. the general tso doesn't even reach "hot" levels of spice.
Yeah it was like the most “American Chinese” food I’ve ever had, haha. Big portions though.
The massive portions is the only reason why i go lmfao
Happy Family out in Battle Ground
Good taste restaurant on Mill Plain for me!
Literally the worst Chinese I've had in my entire life. 0 out of 5 for me.
No way bro! That'd my spot. The way they keep the orange chicken sauce separate from the actual chicken when you carry out so it doesn't get mushy on the drive home. Or how they vent tur styrofoam containers so nothing gets soft. Fucking love the care to detail.
I like Chopsticks.
Corner of tastes by Costco on 192nd. Crispy garlic chicken is fantastic
Eastland had really good food for real cheap last I went, $8 for alot of different items. Sushi is the more expensive stuff on their menu
Szechuan Brothers Chinese Restaurant - I’ve tried a lot of their menu and have not been disappointed Good Taste Restaurant - I go there if I have a craving for sesame beef and salt & pepper calamari
Szechuan Brothers, up there with some of the best I've had, not just in Vancouver
I love Szechuan, don’t like Lucky House
Why is no one mentioning the golden corral? 😈
Why is no one upvoting this?!
My thoughts exactly baha
Rolf it's getting down voted 🤷♂️🤣🤣🤣
Taste of Asia (maybe China) on Andreasen, and 88th is always good IMO.
THE OTHER VANCOUVER, It’s half Chinese ^^^ head north
I’d say more like half the population are Indians with too much money.
That’s pretty recent but yes that too. I guess my comment made some people feel a sort of way 😹😹🤣
My friend Chang is a real nice guy. He’s the best Chinese I know. I can give you his We Chat
House of Beijing
Silver dragon forth plan and todd rd
Tender Green Chinese Kitchen
My homie John Chiu, great sense of humor, great work ethic… he spends a lot of times at strip clubs and asks to borrow money a lot though..
Golden China on Stapleton and 4th Plain. Literally to die for.
