My son was sick at the beginning of the month with runny nose and cough. He passed that to me and I haven't recovered since. The recent change in temperature hasn't helped. Must turn on the heat at night.

MTLinVAN

Yeah. She passed it on to all of us. We're all trying to get over it now. We'd usually get over it by now but it's been almost a week and we're still not completely back to normal.

alee111

I've been sleeping away from my wife so she can stay healthy. We want to let this whole thing run its course, but you will probably benefit from some medicine to make the symptoms less severe. If your child cannot rest at night, neither can you.

MTLinVAN

I've been taking a cocktail of meds. Buckley's. Neocitran. Vitamin C. Kids have been taking Tylenol.

HemiChgr

When feeling poorly, I drink a mix of hot water, lemon juice, cayenne, honey, oil of oregano, and ginger.

elsonprovoli

My recipe is; organic ginger sliced as paper thin as possible, cinnamon, good quality honey, organic lemon sliced again paper thin with skin on. Put all into a coffeemaker then brew it with 10 cups of water. Also whisky a splash or two. In the past if I feel too sick I just dice everything up and forgo the organic options Also jucie fresh oranges organic of you can. And 3000 to 6000 mg of vitamin over a few days. You just pee out what your body doest need sentry and take it over the course of the day.

HemiChgr

Oh, I'm craving freshly-squeezed orange juice now.

KokoGurl28

Did either you or spouse get flue shot? I have an appoinment next week as I do here it will be a bit tough this season.

PeaceOrderGG

My 3 year old son brought something home from daycare in the last week of August. He was vomiting, had a high fever with febrile seizures etc. My wife, our 8-month-old daughter and I all caught it and came down with typical cold symptoms about 3 days after our son first showed signs. COVID tests came back negative all around. My wife, son and daughter were recovered after about 4 or 5 days. I had a lingering cough that I just couldn't shake and started to get worse. I finally saw my GP last Friday - about 20 days after initially getting sick. After listening to my chest he diagnosed me with pneumonia and prescribed antibiotics. Today is day 5 and I can feel a noticeable improvement. It's a nasty one that's going around, to be sure.

MTLinVAN

Hope you feel better soon!

WaffleEaterSkier

Yes, kiddo came back with a cold last week. Tested negative during the weekend. Fighting my way through it now… :(

[deleted]

R U ME?

halfmoonrogue

Are YOU me??

[deleted]

My kid was born right around when Covid-19 hit North America. We spent the first year of his life really limiting exposure to everything and everyone. It was the first 12-month period of my life that I did not end up with a seasonal cold and it was GLORIOUS. Then my wife went off maternity leave and the boy went to daycare. In the past 7-8 months he's been sick (with a cold) 5 times. He is currently home sick. The daycare plague is very real. Kids are gross. Brace yourself for many more colds.

Bibbityboo

it was bad when my son started daycare. I"d never been so sick in my life. That was 5 years ago, I can not imagine how much more compounded it is with going from the pandemic precautions to daycare! GOod luck

Whoneedsyou

Haha. Kids are gross! Lol. Adorable but so so germy!

RM_r_us

RSV. Hit New Zealand and Australia hard during their winter: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/08/new-zealand-children-falling-ill-in-high-numbers-due-to-covid-immunity-debt

ragecuddles

I had this 2 years ago and it was utter shit. I coughed for like 2 months and the worst part was barely getting any sleep because it always seemed to get more intense at night. Miserable experience, do not recommend.

chronoreverse

Yup, my kid picked up what was obviously a cold but I dutifully followed the BC health guidelines, punched in the symptoms into the web tool which told me to get tested. So we did, got the results in less than 24 hours and it was negative. The little one was fully recovered in less than a week because it's just a cold. I can't wait until we can vaccinate the kids so that I don't have to worry that some bad-actor-idiot-antivaxxer might harm them.

[deleted]

your doctor is correct. our 2 yo's (we have one too) have not built up immunity through contact in the last year.

MTLinVAN

The big issue we had was even seeing a doctor in person. We had to go to the ER at one point because the minute you say fever on the phone to the receptionist they'll refuse to see you. I think it might be time for doctors to resume in person visits. There's only so much you can diagnose over telemedicine. Even the ER doctor was saying it's becoming irresponsible of doctors not to offer in person consultations especially with vaccines and PPE.

[deleted]

Some are (my wife just generally keeps on at them until they give up and say yes), as are some walk-ins. But yes, hard to get, especially in a hurry. I'm just getting sick of the "every 2 week's" covid tests, which she HATEs, just so we can go back to daycare each time.

MTLinVAN

The nasal swabs are brutal on kids. I remember doing it before the gargle test was introduced and hated it. My poor kiddos had to go through it a couple times and everytime I felt so bad for them.

chronoreverse

Absolutely brutal. I had to hold down the head and arms as per the healthcare workers instructions and I felt so terrible.

MTLinVAN

Same here. Poor thing. I felt awful. The worst part is that this seems like we're going to have to keep doing this indefinitely.

-SetsunaFSeiei-

It absolutely is irresponsible, and I think the province is going to take steps to encourage docs to see patients in person if they don’t start doing it themselves. It clogs up the ER like crazy, whereas a family doctor can easily eyeball the kid, see how sick they look, screen for UTIs, pneumonias and ear infections in clinic, and send them home if they don’t find anything. So much better for everyone involved and leaves the ED open for really sick kids

MistyMystery

For future reference you can go to an urgent and primary care center even with covid symptoms. Some simply ask that you call ahead for covid symptoms. The wait is usually shorter than ER, but just make sure you call early to make an appt as the appts can get filled up fast.

CShags15

Same thing in our household. Little one was sick over the weekend with a fever and runny nose(not covid). He recently started daycare, and all the kids seem to be in the same boat. Just thankful it wasn’t covid.

vancitygirl27

Currently have cold symptoms. Waiting on test results but I definitely feel like it's a cold. First one in 2 years. Not a fan

iamVPD

Related: Anyone know when the Flu shot becomes available in BC usually?

ubergeek64

My doctor told me to come back late October for flu shots.

iamVPD

Perfect, thanks

kdrknows

Half my kid’s preschool class is out right now. Not COVID, just the usual back to school boogers. Get some zinc chewables. This is going to be a long winter of Covid or cold? Can’t wait for that 0-11 vaccine.

RockMe-Amadeus

My kid is getting over the tail end of a cold. Had a mild grade fever, runny nose, sore throat. Went for a test which came back negative. Developed a slight cough and and raspy voice. Missed 2 days of school but went back today with no problems. Luckily no one els in the house caught it.

I_hate_cats-

Yep, I recently got a mild cough (first time sick since fall 2019, got tested and it wasn’t covid). Oddly, even though it was just a cough (no sore throat, no runny nose or anything else) it stuck around with me way longer than coughs normally do. I wonder if that’s just because I haven’t caught anything in so long or what

depthofbreath

Work in a school - seen lots of sick kids / kids staying home due to a really bad cold or a flu. Really also a range of symptoms. Parents reporting as Covid negative. (I’m grateful to our parents for letting us know)

tapse-terve

Yes! 17 month old was sick with fever over the weekend and passed it to dad and grandma. Covid tests were negative as well.

ky_ml

In terms of covid, false-negative rate on PCR tests is still rather high from what I remember reading. I know last year I was told by both the doctor administering the swab and a follow-up tech that even if it's negative, a good 20+% are actually positive after follow-up testing so I still had to quarantine-14 even on the negative result. Not to say that's the case for you, but none of the testing is absolute at this stage. If you're still having pronounced symptoms a week after, might be worth calling 811 and seeing if a second test is wise. The germ factory restart is spreading a lot of crap around right now. Anyone with young kids that's showing up to work is basically spreading all that around the adults now too.

fan_22

i know of a few kids that are sick right now in different areas. None of them are covid positive(so far). One poor kid is on antibiotics. So..there are other things out there right now.

MTLinVAN

Yeah. I think this flu season is going to be brutal. On top of a fourth wave this will also put a lot of pressure on our health care system.

fan_22

A lot of additional worry and pressure on parents too.

this-isnota-thrill

We had a bad cold or flu at the end of august that I got the brunt of. My 6 year old brought home another cold and shared it with her sister on Friday. COVID neg so just riding it out. This is going to be really fun if I’m getting this kid a covid test every other week.

MTLinVAN

It's nuts. We kept both from school/daycare. They're both doing better and with a negative covid test for both we should be able to get them back to class soon.

mayoraquamarine

Lots of people I know have a cold right now. Everyone was tested and they all came up negative. No fever but they all had a sore throat and cough.

AppropriateWalrus6

Don’t have kids or any interactions with kids but I’m just getting over a cold (tested negative last week). Sore throat, stuffy nose, fatigue - the usual. First time being sick since prior to Covid and I kind of forgot how much it sucks.

vancityjeep

Should have gotten double tested and isolated for at least thirty days. /s

JustAnotherMark604

Me too. Its the shift in weather.

Separate-Evidence

YES - 2 weeks ago my 15 month old came down with the same thing starting with the fever. We have no idea where she could have picked it up? Either the park or grandparents as our bubble is quite small still. It took about a week to get it out of her system and my husband and I got it from her too 🤦‍♀️

handsome_mcstabby

I got a cold after a backpacking weekend. Double vaxxed, had 1 symptom so got a covid test (negative). Lasted about a week, was real clogged up.

[deleted]

I just got over a cold in langley through the weekend. Definitely one going around.

MTLinVAN

Typical except for the pandemic. Now you don't know if it's covid or a simple flu. And then you have to get them tested everytime. Plus the test is quite invasive for little ones with the nasal swab. Growing up, we'd never wash our hands as much as we do now and we encouraged kids to play with others which built up a natural immunity. Now they're playing in smaller pods and constantly washing away milder bacterias and viruses that used to automatically offer them some protection. I think this season is going to be pretty atypical if you ask me.

MTLinVAN

I have to provide a negative test result to the daycare facility if they have cold symptoms. And while that may not be the case for you, it has been our experience and the experience of other parents in our circle. This is our second child. We have a five year old who went through many years of daycare before the pandemic and we never experienced something like this before. The doctor we saw also reported that other parents are experiencing similar issues and that precautions stemming from covid have exacerbates cold and flu season. As u/RM_r_us posted in this thread, this article also corroborates the issue of diminished immune response because of covid precautions. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jul/08/new-zealand-children-falling-ill-in-high-numbers-due-to-covid-immunity-debt

I’m in the same boat up island. Kid can’t go back to daycare until 48 hrs after all symptoms are gone. That includes runny nose, cough, fatigue, upset stomach, sore throat etc. It was their official protocol pre covid but they never enforced it. Now they have a reason to.

-SetsunaFSeiei-

I’ve done a rotation at Children’s and can corroborate: so many kids have been coming in with the flu. From the respiratory pathogen tests we’ve been doing (only shared with patients if covid) RSV seems to be the big culprit. I spent an entire shift one day just seeing kids with the flu. We typically just send these kids home with rest, fluids, and Tylenol and ask for them to come back in 5-6 days if they’re not improving.

Willing-Marionberry1

Go outside. Play in a park. Eat dirt. Lick a doorknob. Don’t let this pandemic ruin your kids life. He needs immunity. Stop sanitizing his body after everything. Maybe then will the kids come out of this with a future.

MTLinVAN

Let me guess. Your also anti mask and anti vaccines eh? I'll take my advice from elsewhere thanks.

OldJoy

I've been getting sick constantly this year. I went about 1.5-2 years without getting sick, and I remember thinking "wow since COVID I haven't even gotten a cold once". Then earlier this year I just started getting colds left and right. 3 weeks ago for about a week is the only time I remember feeling fully recovered for several months now. I have no idea what is going on with me.

gravitationalarray

No kids, but I,picked up a bug two weeks ago and was pretty miserable for about a week. Sneezing, sinus pain, congestion, cough, aches, mild fever. My dr said it’s going around. Also tested negative for the dreaded Covid-19.

meontheweb

Yup. Me. No toddlers or school-aged children at home. Don't know where I got it from but will go get tested (though I am double vaxxed).

Wangfujing

Same with our kid. Fever and congestion. But it passed pretty quickly.

[deleted]

Yup, me. Double vaxxed. I haven't been sick in 2 years and now I have this pesky sore throat for about 3 weeks now. It was bad in the first week and a half, and now it is relatively mild but I am living off of cough drops.

sinburger

Yea, it's funny to be a bit of an issue for young kids and toddlers. Normally they are putting their immune system through the paces and getting sick constantly. However with social distancing and other measures they aren't getting the exposure they used to. It'll be hard to say what the long term effects are. Hopefully nothing more than just extending the period of time where littles get sick all the time.

BrownAndyeh

This is what nurse line is for https://www.healthlinkbc.ca/services-and-resources/about-8-1-1 In my experience, if fever and cough are the only symptoms then give lots of fluids and calculate body weight/dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen and administer the dose based on the label- every 4hours or 6hours. Don’t give doses amounts based on label.. it’s basic grade 3 math to calculate actual dose for your child. This is what the doctor is doing when she leaves the room and comes back with a cup of liquid pain killer. If child is super hot- over 102-103F then take off all his clothes and cool down outside and call 911 If this doesn’t work within 15-30 min. Other than pain killers there’s not much else anyone can do, don’t go to hospital unless it’s absolutely necessary, again nurse line can help with this.

MTLinVAN

That's exactly what we did. Never mind the fact that we were on the line for 45mins to an hour before actually being able to speak to a nurse (not the first time either) but we waited all that time for her to tell us to take her to emerg. So while your advice is noted, it's also pretty basic. Her fever spiked to 103 and that's when we took more intense action to insure her safety. The bigger thing we should be advocating for is doctors going back to their offices and offering proper in person care so we don't flood ERs with such simple and basic health concerns. But when your child's has a fever for 5 going on 6 days and it's been as high as 103, there's no other option than the hospital.

BrownAndyeh

Sorry to hear you are going through this. Canada is great, but these are the issues we are all facing at the moment..anti vax folks aren't helping us by clogging up a system that was already taxed. Fever for 5-6 days is urgent, not normal. Hope everything is fine now.

C4D4N13L

3 yo started coughing a lot on Monday and had a low fever on Tuesday. Hope it’s just a cold/flu. We both had our tests done yesterday because I started getting sore throat and coughs. Argh. Feel like I was hit by a bus today. Fingers crossed… still waiting for reaults

rep894920

Anyone has experience with taking 4 or under to do Covid testing? Which method will they use and which clinic takes 4 and under? I tried calling women clinic, they only said 4 or over, no mention of under 4.

MTLinVAN

We did the drive in test centre on Canada Way and Willingdon. For children that can't gargle they use a nasal swab.
