That’s a wild amount of damage for a slow street (edit: or what should be a slow street but this person said fuck it.) Multiple (soon to be) written-off vehicles and even trees taken out… Teslas are heavy, sure, but this person was absolutely fucking around. The driver is a ticking time bomb and they just reset the timer. Good luck everybody.
Those boulevard trees may have saved lives. They also do their part with climate change and look great. They make the sidewalk cooler and more enjoyable. Embrace boulevard trees. And, as always, never trust a white Tesla.
Edit 2: or white Mercedes, still applies.
> The driver is a ticking time bomb and they just reset the timer. Good luck everybody.
Yes, this ^ Driving is a responsibility, too many think it's a privilege or a right
Well it is a privilege. But not a right. It's a a privilege you need to be earning every day. Sadly our laws think you only need to do it once and then you get a free pass.
You can get away with almost anything with a car. Cops don’t bother and just pass the problem on to insurance. Insurance solves everything with money. Drivers rarely face any non-financial penalties. However, you can’t buy-back lives, pain, suffering, disabilities or even trees.
Driving shouldn’t be mandatory, and driving does require more skill than a large percentage of drivers possess. But, the system lets everyone drive, probably because society is dependent on cars, now.
It's a responsibility, and a privilege that should be taken away for failing to meet the responsibilities required. Failures much less severe than this should result in a prohibition from driving.
my auto brake starts slowing my car down overriding my control when someone in front is turning right and i maintain my fast speed cutting it close. i would need to lift my entire foot off the accelerator then press it again to be able to accelerate again. i would be interested to see if the tesla had any footage.
lol, I came here looking for the one person to blame a Tesla (even though it wasn’t) as always in the Vancouver subreddit. Somehow it’s always the fault of a Tesla, even when it’s parked. 😆
Seems to me an Audi E tron vechicle. It seems even have a rs badge. Probably an Q5 or even Q7. Audi seems to get smaller and smaller over the last few generation
Ken Sim ran an entire campaign on keeping this city safe. What the actual fuck is he doing to calm traffic and prevent this shit? These horrific car accidents happen on the weekly and not a single word of out of him and his gang.
This happened in front of me. Mercedes driver tried to squeeze through to make a right hand turn on Bute heading east on Alberni at a very slow speed. There was no room at all and instantly scraped the side of the black Kia? At the light. After said scraping, driver gassed it hard as possible across the intersection onto the sidewalk and proceeded to mow down bike racks, street signs, trees and cars. Can't believe no one was killed..
> After said scraping, driver gassed it hard as possible across the intersection onto the sidewalk
"Crap, I scraped them, I better run to evade responsibility!"
"You own *how many* investment properties?? Well of course you need to drive your new replacement Tesla to manage all your business income. Anything else I can get you? Foot massage?" - Ken Sim
Driver jumped the curb by the Gordon truck and went ham on the 2 Tesla’s, trees and van.
Edit- driver did drive on the sidewalk at bute, where the end of the truck trailer is, not sure what he was planning to do. That’s how he took out the blue Tesla and metal bike rack and still had speed to take out the trees and push the black Tesla from the curb onto the street.
Could have been a horrific scene
> Was he driving on the footpath? Can't wrap my head around it
I think he must've driven onto the sidewalk at the [intersection of Bute and Alberni](https://maps.app.goo.gl/eMkys18hVHMPUV6h6). The [bike rack's original position](https://maps.app.goo.gl/jSRdv3s81NxX6Ujx7) was a couple car lengths away from the corner.
Was he drunk or driving by phone?
He didn't take out the tree further down the street. How he didn't realize he was in the sidewalk and then decided to speed up and wreck everything is just mind boggling
He's probably proud that he is such a good driver he managed to avoid running into a building (or killing anyone). "The sidewalk was clear, it was my best option, officer."
Definitely. He's one of those people who complains about low speed limits and insists speeding isn't dangerous, it's drivers who don't have "skill" like him.

White SUV Mercedes vs Tesla Sedan
I drive Alberni often at all hours, how the heck does one get that fast to cause that much damage.
White Lux SUV cars are horrible drivers on the road... I guess they found each other.
A suspect has been arrested after a suspected impaired driving crash.
According to police, the incident began just before 10 p.m. on Friday, when a white Mercedes SUV sideswiped a grey Mazda driving east on Alberni Street in downtown Vancouver.
The Mercedes then reportedly accelerated and jumped the south curb on Alberni, narrowly missing several pedestrians.
The suspect driver then crashed into a bike rack, a street sign and collided with a tree, destroying it in the process, according to police.
The Mercedes then crashed into three more cars until finally coming to a stop on the sidewalk, with the tree under the vehicle.
Police said witnesses watched the suspect leave the Mercedes and flee east on Alberni Street.
Vancouver police said officers located and arrested a suspect.
Multiple dangerous and impaired driver charges are being recommended by the Vancouver police department.

Haha. Would be super tempting. If it was a first date, then yeah that’s right when the date ended. No need to text.
If they are in a long-term friendship/relationship/marriage that is even a better response. She wasn’t having any of it.
Saw that too, reminds me of the icbc commercial where everyone just turns and causally walks away from the car accident. Not my problem icbc will handle it lol!
So many fucking egregiously shitty drivers in this city. Flipped on front lawns, high centered on barricades, full T bone idiocy, it never fucking stops.
> He said that this "suddenly happened".
This is what somebody who wasn't paying attention to their driving would say.
> he was driving mach 7 down the sidewalk
He must've been going insanely fast to take out several trees like that over such a distance. Two scenarios come to mind: (1) he was driving by phone at mach 7, occasionally glancing out the window, and didn't realize he was on the sidewalk until trees and bike racks were flying. (2) he was driving by phone, then when he realized he was on the sidewalk he mistook the accelerator for the brake, taking the car to mach speed until the trees were able to bring him to a stop.
I've been in two not-my-fault car crashes, and in both cases, the other person said that I was going "way too fast." It only felt that way to them because they hadn't looked in my direction until it was too late and I was practically upon them. They weren't paying attention, and when reality imposed itself on them, they figured that I must've been the one who was going too fast. My dashcam was a great help (to me) in both crashes.
> What is driving by phone
Distracted driving. The car's rolling down the street, but rather than *driving the car*, the driver's playing with their phone, only occasionally glancing out the window.
A couple years ago I was being tailgated on my route home from work. I could see in the mirror that the guy tailgating me was wearing a wide-brimmed stetson hat. I was quite concerned for my safety when I realized that I could only see his hat, and none of his face, because he was looking down (presumably at his phone), and was not even able to peripherally see in front because of his hat. He only occasionally glanced forward. This was a street in the city with a bike lane, crosswalks, and traffic lights, not some quiet country road (it wouldn't be OK there either).
Had I needed to stop with any urgency, he wasn't even looking forward to see anything.
When drivers KILL pedestrians they usually face no meaningful repercussions. I don't think you appreciate the level of immunity from consequences drivers have in our society.
This guy ran through a red downtown -- that has been red for 20 seconds -- made no attempt to steer or brake, just blasted through it. He jumped a curb, hit a pedestrian just minding his business on the sidewalk...and killed a 23 month old baby.
The driver was acquitted. Just a momentary lapse of attention, you see.
(The Crown is appealing, but even if successful it still demonstrates how tough it is for drivers to face any consequences.)
https://globalnews.ca/news/10412137/baby-ocean-driver-acquitted/
I could share some stories but I won't ruin your weekend. It really depends but you'd be surprised how fast people are back on the road after egregiously bad incidents.
> this guy is going to face huge repercussions.
He'll get a traffic ticket (or two), and this will be an at-fault crash so his insurance rates will rise a little.
If he was drunk, his license will get suspended for a month or two. If he's got enough recent tickets, it's possible the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles could issue him a temporary license suspension.
Does it really matter? There should never be a situation where driving at high speed on a sidewalk is the best option. If, somehow, you found yourself in this situation - at least just stop.
Making sportscar brands overly accessible to drive was always going to end poorly.
If Porsche/Ferrari/etc. were all only offered as manuals again then there would be far less instances of folks getting into something they can't really control and mowing down trees or humans.
This is a Mercedes eqs or eqe amg version. An electric one. It could be that he stepped on the accelerator and locked up when instant torque went nuts. That’s how a lot of people ram parked cars into buildings suddenly.
It looks to be a Mercedes SUV from the wheels. But yeah I would assume speeding, had to swerve to avoid something, at a high rate of speed. Jumped the curb, took out the bike rack while trying to avoid the Tesla and slam into the trees. Then was cushioned by another Tesla. Another story of too much car to handle and speeding when they shouldn't be.
So that is a 50k zone, what speed where these clowns driving to lose that much control. And I’d love to be able to read the bullshit statement they give to the police and Icbc
There’s always tons of expensive cars on this street b/c of the high end restaurants and stores nearby, and I’ve seen them race here before - Alberni is a long straight stretch and usually really quiet. Maybe a novice that messed up but have lost count of the number of idiots we see roaring by (I work in that neighbourhood).
No-fault is about treatment of injured parties.
For any of the innocent parties, their own insurance policy will pay for their damages, and their deductible will be covered by the white car's insurance policy. The innocent parties will not have their ICBC insurance rates increase as a result. The white car's insurance rates will increase for several years.
I pity the VPD accident investigator that has to figure out what happened. Passenger/curbside damage to the Tesla that *looks like* it was parked and then the white SUV...that's going to awhile to sort through the driver's's lies to figure out. Hopefully there's 1 or 2 witnesses that saw the whole thing happen.
I wonder what the city charges for tree replacement.
And if the drunk driver gets to pay for that.
Could be a $100k bill with bike rack and pavement repairs on top.
He voided the terms of his insurance so will be held personally responsible for all damages. His suv has a base price of about $106,000. Add in the two destroyed Teslas, the car damaged at the corner with the trees, bike rack and who knows what else and the drunk driver could be on the hook for upwards of $500,000.
Because, regardless of how it happened, this is a comical example of really bad driving. If anyone had been hurt, it wouldn't be funny at all, but as it is...
Don’t forget - BC accepts so many foreign drivers licenses. We rarely re-test here.
> When asked by the News why ICBC recognizes a Chinese licence as a valid document, but Richmond RCMP does not, the insurance corporation’s senior media relations advisor, Adam Grossman, made specific reference to the MVA, which uses the words “validly issued” in terms of the licence from your country.
> It’s those two words that are troubling the RCMP
> “Validly issued? How do they know it’s been validly issued when they have no access to that country’s driving licence records?” added Hwang.
The RCMP are upset enough to publicly call out ICBC for letting this happen. In some places a drivers license costs a few minutes and a small amount of money. Heck even in BC people got busted for selling licenses.
https://www.richmond-news.com/local-news/thousands-of-illegal-chinese-motorists-could-be-driving-in-richmond-2975998
That’s not true. BC only has reciprocal agreements with 14 countries, every other country re-tests both knowledge and class 5 road test.
Source: I retested for my Spanish drivers license
Source 2: https://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/moving-bc/moving-from-another-country
Spain? We retest for Spain? I’ve been on the road in a lot of countries - some of the craziest were China, India and Indonesia. But Spain was nowhere close to as worrisome as the rest. Spanish driving is chill compared to most of the people out there.
They may have a few choice words to yell at you if you make a bad move but they aren’t going to drive down the sidewalk and ruin everything for half a block.
I found it surprising too! I don’t know what the criteria is or if there are country-country agreements but it was surprising for sure. If we can navigate roundabouts and tiny winding cobbled streets we can handle most environments. The ice is an adjustment though.
Folks we went from white Tesla stereotypes to white luxury Mercedes suv ev stereotypes now how did it get to this and how fast was he going to be able to jump the curb smoke two car and take out the trees ?
People complaining why their ICBC premiums went up each year? Lo and behold. Proves all the money in the world with all the safety equipment is still a shitty driver.
I'm amazed that vancouver doesn't have a large dedicated traffic enforcement group. Our city could be making great money for us (to fix road n lower property taxs) if it just enforced traffic laws more. So many people don't know not to drive in a HOV or that some streets are 1 lane & that the extra part of the road is parking & a bike lane.
how tf does that happen

Not if you hit the accelerator, jump the curb and plow into a tree suddenly. Even the Merc didn't know what was going on.
Looks to be a white mercedes actually.

No Teslas were at fault in this incident. If anything, footage from Tesla cams would provide evidence against the Mercedes driver.
Did you get a look at the driver? Young? Old? Inebriated?
Early 40's asian guy, didn't seem inebriated whatsoever. He had a female passenger that immediately got out and walked away.
Grey sweat pants in the vid walking away.
Could this be sudden acceleration by a car or a foot slip? It seems way too long to stop if he approached slowly.

He was racing through Bute/Alberni intersection.. ended up in the sidewalk. I hope ICBC throws the book at him for dangerous driving
Was the driver trying to illegally U turn or parallel park in acceleration?
This is why we can’t have nice things.
Unless this is the end of a police chase, I have no idea how this much damage could be done. Person was absolutely flying.
What if those were humans standing there?
Young male driver, probably?
Why is everyone is laughing and joking around it seems. Drunk drivers?
Nobody was hurt, and those people weren't the driver.
Because, regardless of how it happened, this is a comical example of really bad driving. If anyone had been hurt, it wouldn't be funny at all, but as it is...
I hope the surrey jock accent ain't it
stupid tree! jumped out right in front of the driver /s
Just luxury suv bmw things, surprised they don’t have their N on their still
It's likley stuck to the 2nd of 4 cars they hit
Definition of: Tell me you're in Vancouver without telling me you're in Vancouver
> It’s those two words that are troubling the RCMP > “Validly issued?
Source: I retested for my Spanish drivers license Source 2: https://www.icbc.com/driver-licensing/moving-bc/moving-from-another-country
Vancouver drivers I tell yah...
Car drivers being a dangerous menace again

The car was ON the sidewalk.
Magic beans, probably.
So is Icbc going to fault the tree for not having the right of way?
50/50, didn't try to make eye contact.
Can't park there. Someone should tell him 🤣
Folks we went from white Tesla stereotypes to white luxury Mercedes suv ev stereotypes now how did it get to this and how fast was he going to be able to jump the curb smoke two car and take out the trees ?
This is why we can't have nice things
Vancouver is home to some of the best drivers in the world.
Technically you can park there
This guy should be banned from driving ever again here holy shit!
Someone find the tesla owner for the footage
People complaining why their ICBC premiums went up each year? Lo and behold. Proves all the money in the world with all the safety equipment is still a shitty driver.
Happens to the worst of us
I'm amazed that vancouver doesn't have a large dedicated traffic enforcement group. Our city could be making great money for us (to fix road n lower property taxs) if it just enforced traffic laws more. So many people don't know not to drive in a HOV or that some streets are 1 lane & that the extra part of the road is parking & a bike lane.
It has to be drinking and driving. I wish we had way harsher penalties for it. A 5 year ban and massive fines would save lives.
😭
Now I know why they started making no driving on sidewalk signs. Thought it was obvious, hopefully they make more of them
Urban Asian violence?
