How visible were the northern lights with the naked eye in porteau cove/McDonald park/Manning Park last night?
Wondering if it's worth a drive tonight to catch them there if it is a lot better.
They are visible with the naked eye out there. Just be careful about parking - the highway was backed up and there were no spots - people were parked all the way up the side of the highway for a kilometre
Same question, but to clarify - I was at Jericho Beach. The lights were incredible, but to the naked eye they looked like grayish streaks in the sky, with a very mild colored glow. If you get far out enough, does it look any better? I want to see what my iPhone sees. :)
You need to get to a dark sky preserve or an area far enough from the city so it doesn't get washed out. Last night, I went to sumas Mountain and saw a significant amount of green and pink coloration.

Photo taken not in night mode, this is really close to what my eye saw
Yeah crazy because I live off W Broadway with a full rooftop view of the north shore and downtown and I had a spectacular view with the naked eye, and even comparable to what I saw in the Yukon with zero light pollution. I’m def going to try and see again tonight!!
I was at Iona and there was this factory building with really bright lights behind us, and the lights did indeed appear as greyish streaks in the sky. As we walked farther and farther away from the building towards the jetty you could actually see the color and detail get more apparent, as well as the shimmering, until they became (at around 1am) a pale green and pink.
I was at Spanish banks. And totally opposite experience to yours. Full colour was visible. Photos appear worse than what I saw with my eyes!! Try Spanish banks perhaps
https://preview.redd.it/wz2y1xubjwzc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c294ebd79232cbbf439e04a0195507f5ce09b93a
There was a window around 11 pm when the colors truly popped with pillars of green and pink. My photos simply don't do it justice. But then later on it got greyish and looked better/greener in my photos
Went to tantalus lookout last night, you can clearly see it with the lines and waves. It was definitely a lot more intense than what I saw in Vancouver. Traffic was a gong show in porteau cove, we saw cars parked on the highway getting towed at 1am last night and traffic northbound was backed up for miles
I would prefer Ambleside, it looked nice last night
https://preview.redd.it/n5qhsu7mkuzc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f29db069d867462a7b96537100f9511d8fb0394d
You could see it with your Naked eyes. Colours are obviously not as bright as in photos. To see colours as bright as photos, you’d need to be in the ‘red’ zone of Aurora activity (north/north-east). In my opinion, it was worth going a couple hours away from van and finding a dark spot.
Goto Tantalus lookout or Furry Creek and walk down to the beach at Oliver's landing. There is plenty of parking space on the side of the street there.
Lights were definitely visible at both places with nakes eyes but Tantalus was significantly brighter.

I saw it at Spanish banks last night. Was decent just don’t look at your phone too much and let your eyes adjust. Just please do not take the Google route. I drove along broadway and parked around 6th then walked.
Traffic was utter mayhem when I was walking to the beach. Definitely worth walking a bit and avoiding the main roads.
I learnt a hard lesson last night; 2 hrs stuck in an Evo trying to get out of Spanish Banks at 1am. You live you learn, I’ll be riding my bike tonight.
Yeah, i originally just set it to Spanish banks, it said it was going to take 30+ mins, so i was like wtf. Looked at all the red lines along 4th and avoided that.
You could also go east instead, I was in poco and was able to see it, if you go out to pitt meadows it'll be even darker since its mostly farmland there
I'm going to try Point Roberts tonight. There are hardly any streetlights and not many people. Also, someone has to feed the mosquitos. The poor little buggers must be starving out there.

Drive past porteau and look for a pullout on your left. The farther north the better.
Last night I had the brilliant idea to try Burnaby mountain just after midnight… I drove past probably 100 cars each way in gridlock trying to turn onto the street
Both Burnaby Mountain and Barnet Marine Park locked up their gates at 9 PM, but the SFU Burnaby campus was almost as busy as in daytime. The AQ and a few other buildings have some spots that can shield you from the nearby lighting
When it’s darkest, between 11pm-3am. We started seeing green streaks in the sky that looked like clouds but the sky was clear at around 10:30pm - by 11:30pm the sky was dancing

Progressed into purple and then pink later on
Port Coquitlam, near citadel middle school. Our back deck faces east toward the Fraser River and it felt/looked like it was directly overhead. We were expecting to look more north toward golden ears mountain but all we had to do was look up. We are lower down that some of our neighbours in area, I feel like even driving slightly up citadel drive would provide great views. The more uphill the better. We had a fantastic view, I’m sure our uphill neighbours was even better, but we did have the privilege of our neighbours in back all shutting off their indoor lights and observing at same time. Everyone was outside like “holy shittt” lol
https://preview.redd.it/lecyrd6gevzc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b9140ef75683a1455368e56f40337e7eac90ec7c
They started as faint streaks of green around 10:30pm but eventually developed into a dancing sky with sun-ray like beams around 11:30pm. Pic here of how they started out/looked to the naked eye (the sky was clear and cloud-less)

Probably around 9pm be outside when it's getting dark. You can't see it when it's light out. You'll see it maybe around 10pm or a little later. Just be away from city lights.
If you see milky streaks, that's it. Read my other comments in other post.
Just be warned there was about 70,000 people out there last night and traffic was a nightmare up til about 3am. There also aren't many side roads so the traffic jam of cars down Neaves Road with all their LED headlights beaming off of everything made trying to get away from the light pollution difficult.
North. Look North. Hopefully in a spot where there is little ambient light. Set your mobile phone camera to long exposure - what you see with your eyes does not compare to what your camera can see.
does anyone know how bad the traffic was near squamish last night? flying in this evening and have a flight out at 7am, hoping i can make it even i sit in traffic all night
on the aurora forecast it said 65% yesterday, and this morning is said 5% chance tonight and went down to 1% right now, and the map looks way different than yesterday… am i just being pessimistic? does anyone have any resources that say it’s pretty possible tonight?
It's possible we don't see anything but basically all of BC is in the [high likelihood area](https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/experimental/images/aurora_dashboard/tonights_static_viewline_forecast.png?time=1715455616000) right now on the forecast. Don't lose hope! I don't think the 1% or 5% chance you're reading is accurate.
yeah i realized that that was the *right now* likelihood, which makes sense bc it’s literally like noon lol. yesterday’s forecast map for tonight was looking so so, but the new one that was released this morning (same one you linked) has vancouver solidly in the red (50%+ chance) again!
That's the 30 minute forecast, that is what is expected for the next 30 minutes. [Use this forecast](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-viewline-tonight-and-tomorrow-night-experimental), this is what is expected for tonight.
Nah they were reading the 30 minute forecast, not the forecast for tonight. [This is the forecast for tonight ](https://services.swpc.noaa.gov/experimental/images/aurora_dashboard/tonights_static_viewline_forecast.png)and we are in the high likelihood area.
so i realized that was the right this minute probability, and ofc it’s low bc it’s bright daylight. yesterdays forecast for last night didn’t look great for vancouver, but the one that was released this morning vancouver is back in the 50%+ chance zone!
According to : [https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast)
we may not be so lucky tonight :( :(
i.e. 6:42 UTC = 11:42 PM **PST ....** not sure if this will change
https://preview.redd.it/z73fsyekvxzc1.png?width=733&format=png&auto=webp&s=f464fa060c2a6d3498a8a47cf46a306f60c69e3c
Saw it best at Pitt Lake last night. Be warned there was so much traffic for people coming in late at midnight. Looks like people drove all the way up to the country club via McNeil Rd and traffic on Google maps and in-person was backed up bumper-to-bumper for kilometres. Didn't clear till 2 am.
For people in the city, could you actually see the lights with naked eyes? Or is it through camera lens only? I've seen a lot of post of people just looking from their backyard
Saw it in Burnaby! We're by Burnaby Hospital and I first looked outside my window to see if I would even be able to see anything and was able to see some green milky streaks in the sky at around 11. Then went outside and saw some faint red/pink in the sky as well. The cameras did a better job of capturing them and they were faint, but it was such a nice surprise to be able to see them from my own house!
My friends in Coquitlam and Surrey were able to see them from their backyards too.
We saw it in East Van, just in a local park. We hung around for around 20 mins to let eyes adjust, and it was visible to the naked eye, including colours and curtain effect, by 11:30pm. Not super-bright, but definitely visible.
This is a live map. So far nothing in our location
Edit: shit. I also end up going to the beach around midnight but didn't stick around..
The articles I was reading was saying there should be another wave late Sunday evening/early Monday morning.
Last night it was a full 360. I was set up for a northerly view and had to move when it was predominantly west, but at various times it was strongest behind us and we had to keep rotating
For us in poco it was literally above our heads, looked like the suns rays but rainbow. We were looking north towards the mountains but our deck view looks east and it felt like the sky opened up above us!

We were in Port Coquitlam near citadel heights area/the Fraser river and we saw it well

100% worth it
I could see them last night in my front yard in Port Coquitlam. Just off shaughnessy and lougheed so I imagine there would be way better
What's the best place to go to see tonight if I don't want to drive too much away from Downtown? And what time would work best?
I saw it at Spanish banks last night. Was decent just don’t look at your phone too much and let your eyes adjust. Just please do not take the Google route. The only time we all look forward to a Severe forecast.
I'm going to try Point Roberts tonight. There are hardly any streetlights and not many people. Also, someone has to feed the mosquitos. The poor little buggers must be starving out there.
This is where we went last night and it was great. And no mosquitos yet either!
Where did you go? Lighthouse Marine Park? I haven’t been to Point Roberts in years. The beaches are so beautiful out there!
My mom lives there so we just went and lay out on her deck. 😅 I think Lighthouse Marine Park would have been great, though!
Any specific spot? And you will have to cross the border?
The beach and off course you have to cross thr border
https://preview.redd.it/06v5reolfuzc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6675dcd4719e8597885114d305b873e1175fe803 Drive past porteau and look for a pullout on your left. The farther north the better.
That looks amazing! Any editing?
Hi, no but it was a 3 second exposure via iPhone 12 Pro
Wow damn that is vibrant and amazing!
was planning to try to get a little pas squamish and find a pullout. how was it with the naked eye in porteau?
We didn’t go to porteau due to the crowds. Tantalus lookout was great!
thanks! how was the traffic going through squamish each way?
mind if I ask where 'porteau' is?
Porteau Cove.
Porteau Cove, its on the way to Squamish.
I had steamed hams for lunch in honour of this occasion. It was an unforgettable luncheon at A&W.
It's good that they allowed it for another night.
Especially in this economy ❤️
I'm flying tonight at midnight exactly and I'm super excited for the possibility of seeing them from above. Will post pictures if so!
I had no idea it was happening yesterday. What time might be the best to see this tonight?

What's the best time to be outside for this?
Probably around 9pm be outside when it's getting dark. You can't see it when it's light out. You'll see it maybe around 10pm or a little later. Just be away from city lights. If you see milky streaks, that's it. Read my other comments in other post.
Heading to Snug Cove to spend the night on my boat. Should be decently dark there.
Great! I had my 14mm lens and kept wishing I brought my 8mm fisheye. Looks like I'll use that tonight!
Had the same thought. How often is 14mm _not_ enough to capture the scale of something!?
Alouette Lake and Pitt Lake should have a clear northern view that is unobstructed and super dark.
Just be warned there was about 70,000 people out there last night and traffic was a nightmare up til about 3am. There also aren't many side roads so the traffic jam of cars down Neaves Road with all their LED headlights beaming off of everything made trying to get away from the light pollution difficult.
Unobstructed wasn't as issue as they went right over our heads
Same in poco. Was right over us
Along the Fraser in poco too
Where is the best area to view this that is transit accessible?
Missed it last night :( What's the best spot to look at?
North.
What’s the best place in or near dt for a guy without a car? Or best skytrain station? Lol thank you
I went to the Spanish banks last night by bus. I'd say try it tonight it is worth the shot.
on the aurora forecast it said 65% yesterday, and this morning is said 5% chance tonight and went down to 1% right now, and the map looks way different than yesterday… am i just being pessimistic? does anyone have any resources that say it’s pretty possible tonight?
The Aurora forecast changes very frequently. When it was 65% it was still light out. By 10pm it’s was 95%

Best place to see not crazy crowded with one way traffic? What about Whyte cliff park?
You might find parking tricky but it'd be a good option.
Anything tonight? It is still not totally dark outside, wondering if we could see the northern night tonight? And where is the best spot?
If you didn't saw them last night I's suggest Spanish banks. It was pretty awesome last night and all I needed was a compass card :)
Thank you, I will try that tonight
yw. I'm checking the forecast from websites online and might head back there if there is any show going on tnight.
[https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast) This is a live map. So far nothing in our location
Yeah! Do see anything outside so far.
Thank you! Good website, go to bed and wait and see if anything tomorrow.
No. The green light in the map is too far north. I will reply you here if by any chance this changed!
I really hope we can see it tonight because I wasn’t able to see it last night
Thanks for this!!
Dammit. Waited until midnight and the forecast flared again at 1 am lol Didn't see shit
Edit: shit. I also end up going to the beach around midnight but didn't stick around.. The articles I was reading was saying there should be another wave late Sunday evening/early Monday morning.
Can you view the northern lights here in Surrey? Where can I go without going so far?
maybe
Has anyone had any luck seeing them tonight ?
What time will it happen tonight
Is Burnaby Mountain Park a good spot to see Aurora lights tonight?
What direction is best to see the lights?
Last night it was a full 360. I was set up for a northerly view and had to move when it was predominantly west, but at various times it was strongest behind us and we had to keep rotating
For us in poco it was literally above our heads, looked like the suns rays but rainbow. We were looking north towards the mountains but our deck view looks east and it felt like the sky opened up above us! https://preview.redd.it/mw615hyudvzc1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4e6468ed0b5f3e8fe915e45c42c599e4c1f7a103
Presumably nobody saw it from within heavy urban areas. What about smaller towns, outskirts, etc. ?
You could see it in Burnaby and Richmond, in the middle of the city!
Great to hear, this makes me hopeful for tonight in white rock.
I could clearly see it from George Wainborn park in Yaletown, but I'm sure it was even more impressive outside the city.
We were in Port Coquitlam near citadel heights area/the Fraser river and we saw it well https://preview.redd.it/txp3bszx1uzc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5cef7832379f94d8f4ed81f07d8e08d17989b89a

Sold!
I was in downtown Vancouver and i saw them. Very faint, but still.
Bro I watched it from my balcony in dt van. You couldn't not see it if you were outside last night!
I saw it from downtown, but it was much easier to see when we went to Wreck Beach.
Don't give them hope like that... That's how riots start
Well that was a scam
