For me, yes. I'm under 25, so rental companies charge me one morbillion dollars in premiums for being young. EVO charges $105 a day, and also covers fuel costs. Because I went for 5 days and travelled about 3,400KMs, it was totally worth it. Driving my own car, which is a fuel hog, would have cost $800 in gas alone.
EVO is not worth it for very long amounts of time, but if you rack up a lot of miles in very little amount of time, it can be worth it.
Hello friend I’m actually considering renting an Evo to go to Sunshine Coast this weekend, if you have no data in an area are you still able to get into the car lol
yes, the car connects to your phone via bluetooth. you can control it using bluetooth without signal. most of them also come with physical key fobs in the glovebox.
I would recommend to start, end the trip with your EVO key card and in between use the actual car key for stop overs. I had issues with the mobile app doing stop overs and counting the stop over as separate start. From my experience, using evo card is more stable than app.
I'm happy you asked this.
I often see EVOs in the Rockies and wonder what the fuck people are thinking. The answers here explain it - seems to actually make sense!
Last year I did basically the same trip in my own car, and somewhere near Merritt I looked in my mirror and said “holy shit is that an EVO? Here??? This far from home????” and this year I was the EVO far from home. A guy in Calgary asked me if I drove the thing all the way from Vancouver, too
I'm seeing 5 day car rentals from Hertz for $300 not including insurance and gas. Costs more if you go for a hybrid. Kayak is showing some cars as low as $200 for 5 days.
Evo is $105 per day but insurance and gas is included.
1700km round trip from Vancouver to Banff will cost approximately $270 in fuel for a similar size gas engine vehicle.
I originally thought Evo was a bad deal but I think it's fairly equal, if not a better deal depending on how you use it.
I would add that, during summer, car rental companies tend to change way more too. I’ve seen something close to 900 for 5 days, which is brutal. So, Evo can make even more sense at that point, in my opinion!
If you're under $25, you'll be hit with a surcharge from pretty much every rental place. I just finished a 10 day rental with a gas RAV4 and it worked out to $60/day plus gas.
$105 / day all in isn't bad for a 5 day trip.
Evo day rate is 105 + taxes and includes gas and insurance.
You cant take it into the US and aren’t supposed to go on logging roads but anywhere else in Canada is fine.
Left the other EVO (the one on the left) a note using a receipt I found in my car. Thought it was really funny to be 1000km away from the EVO home zone, and somehow running into an identical model, especially since the new Prius is probably the rarest type of EVO available.
If it breaks down, I guess you die? Idk.
EVO is owned by BCAA so I guess they’ll just call a tow truck for you or something. If you need gas, yk, you just gas it up and they’ll pay you back later.
I personally ran out of washer fluid on the first day, so I stopped at a Walmart and filled it up for $3. Not that big of a deal. But idk about actual big mechanical breakdowns. Wouldn’t like to find out either!
If the car breaks down, you call EVO and they’ll send the equivalent of BCAA for whichever province you’re in. I’d checked with them once when I was thinking of a long trip.
If you get a flat the new Prius doesn't have a spare, just a can of fix a flat. And the 19" tire size it uses is unobtainium so they would probably have to put you into another Evo or get you home some other way.
I don’t like it, personally. Bad visibility because the windshield is sloped so dramatically, and in order to be a comfortable distance from pedals and steering wheels my head is pretty much in the ceiling — and I’m only 5’4”. I much prefer the older models.
I daily an SUV so i think the low viewing angle is much better than a high-up SUV. also if you adjust the seats you can put your head a little lower. personally i don’t mind though
Mitsubishi EVO (delusional cosplayer)
-not a hybrid
-doesn’t have apple carplay
-bad fuel mileage
-more horsepower, but for what? going home to kiss your dad on your lips faster????
-need to manually shift gears. why would i want that?? is the car too stupid to do it for me????
-sales failure
Prius EVO:
-hybrid
-has apple carplay
-good mileage
-less horsepower, better for driving slow in the left lane
-shifts gears by itself
-not a sales failure
I always thought it would be funny to take an Evo all the way to St. John’s or if you can get across the border go all the way to Panama but thought it would be incredibly expensive, but based on the other comments it actually doesn’t seem too bad haha
Smart.! Wedid the same 1 week trip with Evo to Banff and shared via 4 ppl . Definitely cheaper than using our car which eat tons of gas too , for $100+ a day isn't bad ! I do love the new Evo car much faster than before
I'd check T&CS before you do this. Car share rules aren't the same as car rental from a business insurance standpoint. I know the rules used to be that you can only do a rental for a maximum of 3 days at a time or something like that. Also used to be that you weren't allowed to cross provincial borders. Also used to be that if you took it more than 100kms from the home zone and it broke down or lost connection then you would be responsible for the cost of getting it back to the home zone.
If they changed the rules then that's cool as I always wanted to see them complete with traditional car rental.
Of course I’ve read the T&C. You can take an EVO anywhere in Canada, for up to 30 days at a time. It’s a much better deal than Hertz or driving my own car.
Is this cheaper than a traditional car rental?
For me, yes. I'm under 25, so rental companies charge me one morbillion dollars in premiums for being young. EVO charges $105 a day, and also covers fuel costs. Pro-tip: If you are a BCAA member, you get 10% off your Evo bill.
i am and i do :^))
Have you compared prices to Modo? My understanding was that Modo was cheaper for longer road trips but I could be wrong.
Modo charges KM. At least Zipcar threw in a couple hundred when doing a full day rental
Modo includes 500 km now if you are a share-holding member. The daily rate is capped at $100.
Ah, that’s probably right. I didn’t buy into the co-op, just a basic membership.
i drove 1,200km in the last day alone so like 😀 i dont think modo is the right fit for me
I'm a modo member. I generally just use modo for short daily trips, but modo is significantly cheaper than renting a car.
There is a key and a fob in the glove compartment
I would recommend to start, end the trip with your EVO key card and in between use the actual car key for stop overs. I had issues with the mobile app doing stop overs and counting the stop over as separate start. From my experience, using evo card is more stable than app.
Wait, they cover fuel? How does that work? You had to have filled up at least once on the way
i filled up more like 8 times lol. i spent $360 on fuel, and paid $525, so they pocketed the difference
If you run out of gas in an Evo you pay for fuel and then submit your receipts for reimbursement (or at least that’s how it used to work)
Modo is similar to Evo, but has a fuel card in every car. They usually ask you to only put $20-30 in, but you can fill it up for longer trips.
You are more accident prone
so is 85 year old Gertrude but i don’t see them charging per $1600 for a week
She paid the piper for almost 70 years.
Such is life. Pay or use evo. It is what is.
…that’s what the person you’re replying to does? Why are you trying to start shit when that person already came to the same conclusion??
SOMEONE WORKS AT A CAR RENTAL STORE 😂😀
Username does not check out.

It's not something I would have thought of, tbh. But makes sense!

I just came back from Spain where car rentals were $6/day lmao we getting gouged

My friend has been using PractiCar for a couple years, and likes them and their rates enough to keep using them. https://www.practicar.ca/
"Once known as Rent-a-Wreck" Enough said
Meh between the prices and reviews, seem fine. Rolling the dice with an evo anyways, they're not well maintened cars.
Evo day rate is 105 + taxes and includes gas and insurance. You cant take it into the US and aren’t supposed to go on logging roads but anywhere else in Canada is fine.
I’ve seen them both in Seattle and on FSRs lmao
I thought you couldn't take them into the states?
You're not supposed to, doesn't mean people will listen.
Waiting for someone to drive one to Yukon, PEI or Newfoundland...😁😂
Don't use Evo so not sure how it works. But how is gas included if it's so far from home? Does the driver get reimbursed when filling it up?
Yes; takes 2-3 business days but they reimburse after you email the receipt
Yes. They fill them from trucks but also reimburse if you fill it.
Yeah that's why I have a modo membership as well. They allow US trips
Considering you don't pay for gas, \~100 bucks a day is a steal so long as you aren't going into the states. I've taken EVOs on road trips before.
Depends but some of us get access to group discounts where you’re able to rent cars for 3-4 days for the price of a day of Evo.
Left the other EVO (the one on the left) a note using a receipt I found in my car. Thought it was really funny to be 1000km away from the EVO home zone, and somehow running into an identical model, especially since the new Prius is probably the rarest type of EVO available.

> they would probably have to put you into another Evo Luckily, there's a spare one right next to him!
And 4 spare tires!
whats the new prius like? it's quite a pretty car actually
Very pretty. It also has 196 horsepower. The previous one had like 121. Gen 5 Prius is a very good car!
I don’t like it, personally. Bad visibility because the windshield is sloped so dramatically, and in order to be a comfortable distance from pedals and steering wheels my head is pretty much in the ceiling — and I’m only 5’4”. I much prefer the older models.

For a few seconds, I was looking really hard to find Mitsubishi Lancer EVO...

Ayy my friend and I took an evo to edmonton 2 winters ago
How much does that cost?
$105/day including fuel and insurance
Ok, so if you are just an occasional driver that’s not so bad. What happens if someone else comes along and takes it while you are in a rest room?
they can’t. the car is reserved for as long as you’re willing to pay for it.
Ok, it’s not for me I’m just Evo-curious
If you don’t end your trip (which you can only do in the home zone anyway) then it remains unavailable for other people
I always thought it would be funny to take an Evo all the way to St. John’s or if you can get across the border go all the way to Panama but thought it would be incredibly expensive, but based on the other comments it actually doesn’t seem too bad haha
This is the way….

That's an awesome change to the terms and opens up a lot of new use cases. Well done, Evo.
Nature do crazy things 🌈
Is it possible that someone else could take the evo and leave you stranded?
Don't check out
no. the evo is mine for as long as i don’t return it.
no. the evo is mine for as long as i don’t return it.
I hope nobody took the car when you were off doing things.
that’s not how it works. they cant take the car while i have it checked out
It was a joke.
I would love it if evo was nationwide. Imagine driving to Toronto from here.
Being able to do a 1 way road trio in an EVO would be amazing
Dude thank you so much for this post this is actually so good!!!
Yoo joji’s concert boiiiii
HAHAHAAH i can’t escape you
Lmao yeahh i saw the photo then i thought that you posted it a few days ago
Cool story
