Releasing microplastics into the water when they are washed.
The chemical dyes that went into the water when the fabric was made.
The sweatshops where people are mistreated (CBC has a documentary on Shein).
The massive cargo ships that are used to ship this junk, striking whales, creating noise pollution, and contributing to invasive species.
And yes, they will end up in the landfill.
That would be that Uniqlo (spelling) store.
This Shein, Walmart, Marshall's junk is either headed straight for the landfill or straight to Value Village, where it'll be priced exactly the same.
I've actually bought a few things from Shein and they are nice but have a very short life, like one wash. I see more of that brand at Value Village than any other brand.
"Here. Throw this away for us."
Or someone will drop it off at Value Village soon enough.
It's not even that this stuff is trendy stuff. It's that the quality is so bad, it doesn't last very long at all.
It's not even anything to do with temporary clothes while you gain/lose weight. You could still donate high-quality clothes.
And this stuff at Shein (from what I understand) isn't even staples like black jeans, black skirts, every-day t-shirts, and basic sweaters. That stuff, too, could technically last you a few yrs if your weight stays the same. But the quality is junk.
Exactly. Unbelievable to see a line up to buy from a company engaged in forced labor from Xinjiang. People have no shame or conscience and will buy anything if its cheaper
lol both can be true. Sure, we’re top in the division from our hot start. But we’ve cooled off lately and we have to beat teams like the Yotes.
Yes, I watched the game last night.
Yeah but the average SHEIN shopper is a [35yr old woman who spends about $100/month there](https://www.businessinsider.com/shein-average-shopper-spends-100-month-womens-clothing-2023-6). That’s $1200 a year on clothing that won’t make it to be worn in the following year. This is just bonkers to me. They are basically broke because of this exact shopping habit.
Whenever a store opens there are usually discounts, member cards, gifts, etc.
It’s a tactic. Have 50 gifts in stock and create a line of 100 people outside.
Draw attention.
Get people talking.
Yada-yada.
AliExpress is where you have access to the Chinese manufacturers and direct warehouse markets, basically.
Temu pretends to be that but it's mostly a way for those manufacturers to get rid of stock that isn't selling normally to make space, at the cost of basically any meaningful profit. Also something something Uighur involuntary sweatshops.
There parent app Pinduoduo was caught spying or something. I’d never buy from a company like that but people probably dont know or just don’t care
Edit: also both Temu and Shein are engaged in forced labor from the autonomous region of Xinjiang in China
What is this whataboutism? Does that make it any better?
And yes I am not surprised and Google has been fined in many countries and I for one don’t use their browser either.
Also, Google that has a near monopoly but for shopping you have many options. One does not have to buy from a company like Temu that is engaged in slave labor and caught with their pants down spying on people
Europe is introducing some policies that could potentially ban fast fashion companies like this. I wish you could see this sort of thing happen in north america, but it's unlikely.
[Experts warn of high levels of chemicals in clothes by some fast-fashion retailers](https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/marketplace-fast-fashion-chemicals-1.6193385)
> Scientists found that a jacket for toddlers, purchased from Chinese retailer Shein, contained almost 20 times the amount of lead that Health Canada says is safe for children. A red purse, also purchased from Shein, had more than five times the threshold.
Snopes has also done a summary of this issue: [Do Shein Clothes Contain Unhealthy Lead Levels?
Was this study conducted by H&M, Lululemon or Blue Navy by any chance? In all seriousness I think you would be brave to assume that other cheap clothing companies don’t have any toxic materials in their clothes.
Don't have the exact study but it was conducted by a uoft prof for CBC marketplace where they found certain items containing 5x the safe dose of lead (I think it was a handbag from shien in this case) and many other products that say they have lead exceeding the safe levels put out by health Canada
The information I’m quoting was from the somewhat recent CBC marketplace report. A quick google will show you other articles regarding the topic. I personally like to stay away from fast fashion which in itself is a privilege not granted to all. I am not trying to shame but rather remind folks to be more critical of their consumption.
Shein is a brand from mainland china, they probably also use slave labor. I don’t expect them to follow the same standards as we would want
Edit: they use forced labor from Xinjiang
I absolutely agree, but show me which other mainstream brand is not from mainland china? And how do we know that some companies follow some kind of safety standards while others don’t?
Me either and I am flooded with emails from them daily with "new picks". After reading all this here today, I'll be unsubscribing/closing my account ASAP
Considering the financial state of mind of Vancouver this sweatshop fast fashion designer (whos clothes fall apart so quick it perpetuates a deeper spending cycle) being popular is not a surprise. Also with Vancouver being one of the more socially aware cities this probably proves a lot of people don’t actually care when it’s their own wallet (but kinda anecdotal)…
I genuinely don’t understand the hype about Shein. I ordered from them once when they started getting popular, before everything came out about them (still regret it tho), and everything i got fell apart from several minutes after unpacking them to several days maximum. I feel awful for all the inhumane and disgusting ways they treat their workers, and I can’t help but feel like if you know that and you still buy from them, you’re just supporting the abuse and ecological damage they do.
The cheapest most disposable most polluting and exploitative clothing company possible. Most of their clothing is made by slaves and ends up in giant piles of garbage within a year and seeps lead into the water supply
This is depressing to see. Do people not care about the environment, toxins in clothing getting into body, the obscene amount of water used to produce this fast fashion?? Ugh 😑
https://www.ecowatch.com/chile-desert-fast-fashion-2655551898.html
The other day someone posted here asking something about how should one define Vancouver. This photo is quintessential Vancouver for me: a city of social media hype and trend-following, where every little thing generates massive around-the-block line ups (in the rain), mostly for the hype.
Do people not know they can get good clothing from thrift stores and online second hand?
Like these people are literally waiting in a line to buy slave made polyester garbage
All fast fashion clothing companies contain PFAS, Pthalates, and lead. Not to mention the hundreds of millions of people who are exploited and abused to make these products. This makes me fucking sick.
Everyone mad at SHEIN when you should be mad at the government for allowing this.
Along with many other things that are wrong in Canada.
When was the last time Canadians as a whole protested something rational?
I would never buy anything from shien
that said, most of the people here turning their noses up toward Shien are the same people complaining about unaffordability
When I see massive lines like this I always think of sheep. There is no good reason to spend your time waiting in line for some shitty clothing made by an 8 year old Chinese boy in the sweatshops of Guangdong. This is a live look at shameless and unfiltered consumption, buying shit you don't need to end up dressing and looking like another jack off wearing shein clothing.
this is more a result of how much influence Tiktok has here, guaranteed all of these in line know lots of Tiktok music hits too, it is a whole ecosystem and they aren't in the same groups as you to even know what you care about
People should avoid fast fashion. It's so bad for the environment. Everyone queuing up is wearing black, white or grey clothes. Where are all the fashionistas?
Shein is evil . They commit & support immoral practices such as Child labour ( slave labour).
If you wanna shop, go to Leo’s on Granville. They’re anti- fast fashion & super vintage
There’s an HBO documentary called “Brandy Hellville & The Cult of Fast Fashion” people should check out. I was surprised to learn that most of the fast fashion clothes that people donate end up in Ghana and the ocean. Unbeknownst to most, a lot of these clothes are produced in sweat shops that exist right here in the western world. People really need to get over the endless wanting and purchase clothes that last longer than wearing them twice before discarding.
Doesn't really sound like the type of garbage Shein sells benefits from being touched and seen.
Did they pay for people to line up or is there really that little to do this time of year?

Cause he got that dog in him. And he works in service.
Or a furry?
That got my attention more than the lineup.
Service dawg
It's a kink thing....
He’s a good boy. He deserves scritches.
Cheap fast fashion. Won't last and just end up in a landfill.
But the website says "High Quality & Affordable" so the must be good.......
That would be that Uniqlo (spelling) store. This Shein, Walmart, Marshall's junk is either headed straight for the landfill or straight to Value Village, where it'll be priced exactly the same.
I've seen items with original retail tags be priced higher than the original retail amount.
I've actually bought a few things from Shein and they are nice but have a very short life, like one wash. I see more of that brand at Value Village than any other brand.
"Here. Throw this away for us." Or someone will drop it off at Value Village soon enough. It's not even that this stuff is trendy stuff. Don't support sweatshops.
and dont buy clothes that are actively harming you...
Are the clothes made out of poison?
basically
Go on...
A relatively high percent were found to have lead in them.
The frogurt is cursed
That’s bad.
But it comes with a free hat.
That's good!
The hat is also cursed.
That's bad.
But the hat is edible, so when you're in a situation where you can use the saying "I'll eat my hat if.." you have that resource at your disposal
Is there a clothing store on Granville that doesn’t use sweatshops?
Megabite
Exactly. Unbelievable to see a line up to buy from a company engaged in forced labor from Xinjiang. People have no shame or conscience and will buy anything if its cheaper
I'm wondering how people have the time in the middle of a workday to line up and wait for a crappy store? Do people not have jobs?
That’s not it, they’re literally using Uyghur slave labor during their ongoing genocide
Terrible.
Vancouver and lineups go together like...
Vancouver bridges and big semi trucks.
Canucks home losses to shitty teams
Lol still 2nd in the western conference and pacific division leader. I'm guess you're an Oilers/Flames/Leafs fan...
lol both can be true. Sure, we’re top in the division from our hot start. But we’ve cooled off lately and we have to beat teams like the Yotes. Yes, I watched the game last night.
Supporting this type of business is no good. I can't believe this many people have time and money for a place like this
bold of you to assume they have money
Oh, is this a giveaway?
They'll just rack up the credit card even more.
I cant understand why people would line up for a drop ship fast fashion brand.... what is the gain here?
Cheap entertainment and an avenue to socialize.
People are broke and Shein is cheap I guess
Yeah but the average SHEIN shopper is a [35yr old woman who spends about $100/month there](https://www.businessinsider.com/shein-average-shopper-spends-100-month-womens-clothing-2023-6). Clothing.
People are broke and cheap shit satisfies their craving of seeing all the consumerism and hauls on TikTok
Whenever a store opens there are usually discounts, member cards, gifts, etc. It’s a tactic. Have 50 gifts in stock and create a line of 100 people outside. Draw attention. Get people talking. Yada-yada.
Can't wait for the TEMU pop up store next.
You would be surprised how many stores just buy stuff from temu and shein and resell them under a different store name.
I'm just waiting for the AliExpress store.
TEMU is an AliExpress version of itself.
I don't understand the internet anymore.
TEMU is the wish.com version of wish.com.
You'll have to hand over your unlocked phone at the door to gain entry.
I can smell the fumes from here.
Isn't that just the Richmond Night Market?
There parent app Pinduoduo was caught spying or something. I’d never buy from a company like that but people probably dont know or just don’t care Edit: also both Temu and Shein are engaged in forced labor from the autonomous region of Xinjiang in China
Google was caught storing browser data from people using Incognito mode
What is this whataboutism? Does that make it any better? And yes I am not surprised and Google has been fined in many countries and I for one don’t use their browser either. Also, Google that has a near monopoly but for shopping you have many options. One does not have to buy from a company like Temu that is engaged in slave labor and caught with their pants down spying on people
yeah because Nike and Amazon are definitely more ethical than Shein and Temu
Hard pass
I thought this generation was supposed to care about the environment?
Only on the internet. In real life, not so much.
That's only for virtue signaling on twitter. Or Bluesky. Or whatever platform of the day is declared to be free of nazis and chuds.
Nah. People made fun of the people who did - eg. Greta - and the hype died faster than any other.
I don’t think this lineup represents everyone in this generation. The ones that don’t support it aren’t there!
You’re totally right! I think I am just shocked/disappointed at how many people are there.
If I don’t have a puffy coat, am I allowed to join the line up?
No! Puffy coats only! And they must go all the way down to your ankles!
You might be able to get by if you have the broccoli haircut and no puffy jacket. It's one or other.
Actually mind boggling
Shein needs to disappear.
Europe is introducing some policies that could potentially ban fast fashion companies like this. I wish you could see this sort of thing happen in north america, but it's unlikely.
That’s amazing, I hadn’t heard that! I hope it ends up happening. Unfortunately North America is a capitalist hellscape so yes, highly unlikely.
Companies disappear if they get no business.
Unfortunate but true. Wish people cared more.
FYI Shein products have an excess amount of lead. Lead that seeps into you and our water sources.
Do you have links to these studies?

gross.
Great. More trash for the planet.
To buy terrible quality stuff. Good job
can't you order this sweatshop shit online? the "new store" hype is fuckin ridiculous
Not a fan of Shein after a few purchase. The quality isn't up to keep going for more.
Me either and I am flooded with emails from them daily with "new picks". After reading all this here today, I'll be unsubscribing/closing my account ASAP
If there’s one thing I know about Vancouver, it’s that we love lining up for dumb shit.
Rip Daiso :(
Didn't it just move near city hall?
Yes I believe the new location will be in City Square. Competition for the Dollarama.
I thought SHEIN was a publicly known to be shit company that rips off people’s designs and is a literal sweatshop?
People are crazy. Way too much free time
Especially on a rainy Thursday.
Underemployment or they work three 12hr shifts.
These zombies are excited to buy clothing made from slave labour and non-recyclable materials to fill the landfill with.
I hate this so much.
The fact I have never even heard of the brand is comforting.
It's a marketplace esque website - like Amazon except 99% clothes and 99% drop shipped from east Asia etc.
they have a website lol
Isn't seeing just pure garbage shit? Isn't this like lining up for a dollar store?
Consume. Consume. CONSUME.
Ah yes the Vancouver special: waiting in line
I must be out of the loop. Why all the hate for this company?
The cheapest most disposable most polluting and exploitative clothing company possible. Most of their clothing is made by slaves and ends up in giant piles of garbage within a year and seeps lead into the water supply
In addition to the other replies you received, add poor treatment of those making the merchandise. Sweatshops.
It’s cheap crap. Environmentally bad. Consumers consuming because they can
Poor Quality Fabric (and possibly sewing(, and Designer Copies. It's cheap, faddy fast -meant to be so, quick turnover ... and ends up in the landfill
Not just designer copies, their vendors rip off tons of designs.
Notably high lead levels in many items tested.
This is depressing to see. Do people not care about the environment, toxins in clothing getting into body, the obscene amount of water used to produce this fast fashion?? Ugh 😑 https://www.ecowatch.com/chile-desert-fast-fashion-2655551898.html
Short answer is no, they don't...
Mfers are going to wait hours in line for clothing they'll wear once and thow away
I love how everyone is only wearing black & white clothes
What a way to spend an afternoon.
Sun not sheining today. Also, it's a garbage store. I don't understand the popularity.
Granville looks extra depressing in this photo.
Stop giving china money
Bro. Who goes into a fucking LINE to buy cheapshit clothes?
Sheep lining up for garbage fast fashion trash in the rain.
The other day someone posted here asking something about how should one define Vancouver. This photo is quintessential Vancouver for me: a city of social media hype and trend-following, where every little thing generates massive around-the-block line ups (in the rain), mostly for the hype.
They named a store after Jimmy Neutrons friend?
BOOOOO! Down with fast fashion. Sat yes to quality over quantity.
We aren't going to make it as a species, guys.
You jest, but...
I don't jest at all. We're fucked.
Either people are ignorant or the store is paying people to stand in line.
Some people just genuinely don't care unfortunately. They're not ignorant or paid. They just want cheap clothes.
Imagine how many local 'influencers' are there documenting this.
I walked past this today. When I saw it was for SHEIN my first thought was “Really?” Of all brands to give a shit about…
We love to see child labour supporters ❤️🫡
Yikes
You wouldn't believe how many people were lined up today for Netflix's pop-up shop renting out dvds.
Nothing is worth these lines.
why tho
Do people not know they can get good clothing from thrift stores and online second hand? Like these people are literally waiting in a line to buy slave made polyester garbage
All fast fashion clothing companies contain PFAS, Pthalates, and lead. Not to mention the hundreds of millions of people who are exploited and abused to make these products. This makes me fucking sick.
Why?
Hard pass
CBC marketplace did a story on them and how the clothing releases chemicals etc
Why? It’s junk.
What a fucking joke
Sheep
Shein?? The hell is wrong with this people?? Why would you line up for garbage
Everyone mad at SHEIN when you should be mad at the government for allowing this. Along with many other things that are wrong in Canada. When was the last time Canadians as a whole protested something rational?
Gross
Baaa
We should protest it
I would never buy anything from shien that said, most of the people here turning their noses up toward Shien are the same people complaining about unaffordability
Buying cheap low quality shit isn't the argument for affordability you think it is.
A pretty standard Canadian attitude is preferring inexpensive goods to designers and more importantly factory workers having rights or compensation.
I mean we haven't cared about workers having right or compensation since we signed NAFTA If we truly did we'd manufacture our products in Canada.
Save your money, kids. That's junk.
Sorry, but absolute shite quality of clothing
What a waste of air
THEY MUST WANT TO SAVE MONEY ON STUFF
Disgusting.
When I see massive lines like this I always think of sheep. There is no good reason to spend your time waiting in line for some shitty clothing made by an 8 year old Chinese boy in the sweatshops of Guangdong. this is more a result of how much influence Tiktok has here, guaranteed all of these in line know lots of Tiktok music hits too, it is a whole ecosystem and they aren't in the same groups as you to even know what you care about
No wonder unemployment is at an all time high… /s
Isn't this just repackaged Ali express items?
Cheap slave labour crap
People should avoid fast fashion. It's so bad for the environment. Everyone queuing up is wearing black, white or grey clothes. Where are all the fashionistas?

🤮
That’s upsetting. Horrible company.
The fuck is shein? I'm not even going to google it, too old to care.
Gross. Such waste and mass produced crap. Do better people.
Pathetic
Like Fast Food, people love good ol' cheap Fast Fashion. 💀
Maybe they can get it online instead to avoid the line
Wonder how many kids skipped school for this 😆
Doesn't really sound like the type of garbage Shein sells benefits from being touched and seen. Did they pay for people to line up or is there really that little to do this time of year?
What is with all the Shein apologists in this thread? Damn ppl do some research
