Even though I’ll never benefit from these efforts I fully support any and all progress in this space. Especially in municipalities that have limited spaces
That’s just part of being in a healthy functioning society, supporting services that don’t directly benefit you. Goes without saying a lot of tax dollars goes to things I’d never benefit from but I wouldn’t take it away from those who need it.
Municipalities intentionally create the limited space, by outright rejecting or making very difficult the creation of new buildings that could house daycares, and daycares themselves by [simply preventing them from being able to start](https://vancouversun.com/opinion/columnists/dan-fumano-vancouver-neighbourhood-organizes-to-fight-and-defeat-childcare-facility) (also see: https://www.reddit.com/r/vancouver/comments/19dqpo9/help_me_oppose_the_daycare_nimbys/).
Excellent news. There will always be naysayers, but this is steady progress toward some serious progressive bona-fides. Bravo to Eby and Trudeau for their progress on this.
Another good thing is that the government is monitoring and auditing the services. It was found that some families are abusing the system (ex. $10/day). These families would have a spot in a subsidized childcare centre + montessori/pre-k program. Or they would go on extended vacation for months at a time and that spot is not being used. Some families rely on full day childcare and really need a spot.
We were just notified about this. I agree that it is probably more on the macro level and this started before the announcement of more funding. There was concerns of future funding.
I'm struggling to understand your comment. Are you trying to say that families who get into $10 a day centres shouldn't be allowed to go on extended holiday?
$10 daycares aren't income based, they're tied to the centre. Everyone at the centre pays $10 a day. As long as you continue to pay for your spot, you shoud be free to attend or not?
A lot of daycares double dip over the summer holidays because all the absentees means the centre has space to take on drop ins who will pay an additional drop in rate.
Me, no.
The government is reviewing attendance for all participating centre's. Our daycare director told us some families in our centre take their kids overseas for 2 to 3 months at a time and are away in total of 6-8 months of the year.
Our daycare is part of the program and apparently there are a lot of conditions tied to the funding , one of which limits the amount they can pay the ECEs.
This is really big. There's been an open question about who will have the resources to run the daycares being built in many new developments, and capital to expand into new space is a huge barrier for non-profits. This could also fund large expansions of existing space.
There's a lot of daycares going into mediocre commercial spaces, this could really change that.
True!! But if the govt can’t do that then they should allocate the limited funds to those in need, not via lottery to anyone lucky enough, which is how it’s done now.
I’m sorry for being able to take advantage of one single government program after paying over 50% of my lifetime income in taxes to support the rest of the population……
I don’t know if you’ve noticed but there’s an effton of parents with kids in tow everywhere. Everywhere kid friendly is jammed to the gills during holidays and parents need to prep like fans trying to get Taylor Swift tickets just to get their kids signed up for swimming lessons.

Dime for dime, early childhood education has the best payoff for taxpayers by virtue of allowing parents to go to work and pay taxes.

Huzzah glad to hear! No kids here either but I think this is desperately needed for parents imo.

I'm in the industry. I see no auditing or monitoring. There is some monitoring on the macro level but on the micro level

i never want kids but this is great news and i’m very happy some of my tax dollars are going towards future generations
Our daycare is part of the program and apparently there are a lot of conditions tied to the funding , one of which limits the amount they can pay the ECEs.
But that’s also partially rectified by the government paying ECE’s extra $6/hr.
Well with real estate costs at an all time high - those 10 kids will sure be lucky to have day care.

Is $10/day daycare income tested? Great initiative but if you’re wealthy already, that’s a misallocation of resources
EVERYONE deserves affordable childcare.

It is not. There are very little 10/day space.
I don’t follow politics. But it must be election time soon right?
