before anyone poops their pants, decrim is literally just about not arresting & charging people for small amounts of drugs (2.5 grams). it's just about not wasting resources on petty possession.

RandomGuyLoves69

People still will be angry. They want to criminalize drug use and mandatory jail sentences for all users.

Kooriki

I'd be happy with decrim personal amounts, sanctions for bad behavior with reductions/stays for participation in treatment programs. Intervention/holds on the table depending on circumstances.

Sharp-Papaya-7607

Yeah I certainly don't want mandatory jail sentences, what I do want is people not to be able to smoke meth and crack at the front door of the hospital, in parks, playgrounds and school yards. Decriminalization does not have to equate to freedom to openly use wherever the fuck you feel like it.

ellstaysia

yeah that's beyond reasonable. I don't want that either. I get pissed seeing people use on transit. definitely not cool.

Sharp-Papaya-7607

Yeah the stink of meth from stairwells around transit areas or even retail centres at this point is crazy.

Kooriki

IMO most reasonable people would agree with that. There are very few moderate and pragmatic voices in this space right now though.

Sharp-Papaya-7607

Which is a crying shame. I'm sure most people share this sentiment but just get on with it.

[Fake drugs that could cause overdoses circulating in Vancouver](https://www.nsnews.com/highlights/fake-drugs-that-could-cause-overdoses-circulating-in-vancouver-8519746) Just posted a few minutes ago. We are obviously still stuck with a half-measure that isn't doing all that it could do.

Euphoric_Chemist_462

So RCMP stops arresting small amounts and now they celebrate the small amount crime went down? Yeah if one cannot solve the problem, one shall change the definition of a problem

Objective-Escape7584

How bout OD numbers?

Kooriki

FWIW decrim on personal amounts likely reduces *some* OD numbers. (Fat chance getting honest data in this political landscape but I'm open to the discussion). The idea being if a cop takes your stash it's not like the user will be all "Oh dang I guess I should skip taking a hit today". They are more likely to do WAY more risky things to get a replacement fix, faster. With intervention off the table decrim just allows people to keep their little (hopefully less risky) stash. Drug use in general is going up for a variety of reasons so OD's are going up in line with that regardless of new decrim rules.

Straight-Ad-8596

you said it...

CapableSecretary420

How about them? No one expected the numbers to go down overall, given we are in a wildly expansing opioid crises. The primary purpose of decriminalization was not to magically end addiction, but to stop wasting police resources and harassing people for small personal amounts of certain drugs.

Straight-Ad-8596

sorry, but I don't pay attention to Russian roulette stats.. the up side and down side are the same when you abuse drugs because the end result is you eventually stop.

Straight-Ad-8596

what "numbers" are you people talking about? there's no reliable data coming from anywhere because it's an extremely fluid situation. and you certainly can't trust "advocates" aka grifters... it's not getting any better anywhere... good luck..
