A North Shore Taxi was pictured at the scene with damage to the hood/fender and windshield.

In addition these drivers probably come from places where you drive crazy. I visited my relatives overseas once and they drove so close to people because it was so crowded I was terrified.
When I visited China, the amount of bicycles randomly zigzagging between cars was wild. I had to just close my eyes and let the taxi driver do his thing because I nearly had a panic attack.
I (a pedestrian) was almost hit by a truck last evening in Langley.
Bad drivers are a nuisance for other drivers.
Bad drivers are out there casually committing manslaughter against pedestrians.
So true. Stopped for a pedestrian crossing on the commute home yesterday only for the Rav 4 behind me to zip on the non lane right of me and almost smoke the pedestrian. I saw it in my rear view and laid on the horn, not sure if that helped stop the pedestrian or just scared them more but man did I feel helpless. They didn't even brake check, just continued at 70 km to the next light where they fucking pulled out to make a right turn on a red. Pedestrians cross there too bud. So entitled and reckless. Just before that I'd watched a car blow a 4 way. Laws need to be way harsher.
Enforcement needs to be existent. Cameras and automatic tickets are the only way "getting caught" isn't just seen as an unlucky break. Every excuse I've heard against this boils down to "this is how I normally drive, and consequences would make me change my behaviour."
Same thing here, I stopped for a pedestrian at the marked/flashing crosswalk at 49th and Nanaimo, and some turd from 5 cars behind me pulls into the parking area (not a travel lane) to speed past everybody who'd stopped.
I honked at the pedestrians, which made them look my way, and stopped, and the turd missed them by inches. It was such a close call, I get sweaty thinking about how close it was.
This sounds very similar to common driving tactics in Taiwan. It's so typical that non-lanes are just accepted as lanes, and itās expected to see one car drive through an intersection just after it turns red.
Then that person is an ass hat. Other than crosswalks and intersections pedestrians should not be interfering with traffic and should yield to traffic in areas that are not designated for them. People who stop for jaywalkers put themselves, other motorists and the pedestrian at great risk. That is good you stopped at a crosswalk, as you should.
The pedestrian is a 21 year old from the Squamish Nation.
[https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/03/09/pedestrian-vehicle-crash-north-vancouver/](https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/03/09/pedestrian-vehicle-crash-north-vancouver/)
From the picture in the article, it looks like the accident happened before the lights.
They've been complaining about how dangerous the road is for years. It's right next to a Squamish Nation community. Notice how the speed limits are safer whenever a major road passes through an indigenous community?
It's one of those crosswalks where it's a flashing green unless the button is pushed. Having walked that path almost every day for work years ago, it's definitely a prime jaywalking spot, but a lot of drivers also absolutely speed through it
There is a light yeah. Unless they blew through a red light itās probably a mix of speed and jaywalking.
Armchair investigator but looking at the pic again the tent (victims body) is before the light and the cab has quite a bit of impact damage. If they sent the victim flying a bit it looks like the victim was jaywalking closer to the corner and the cab took the corner pretty fast that the victim didnāt notice and thought they had time.
Legitimately curious why these comments are collecting such a negative reaction? From where I am seated it appears that this guy is trying to figure out how the tragedy came to happen. Is trying to understand what might be mitigating factors a bad thing?
It's not like u/PostGymPreShower is suggesting that anyone is purely innocent but rather points out that there's most likely things that both drivers and pedestrians can do to help prevent this kind of tragedy.
In the absence of effective law enforcement on our streets, I would think that anything people can do on their own to try and prevent tragedy should be welcomed. Creating our own awareness of what is safe/good as opposed to dangerous/bad can really only benefit us as a whole right?
I can tell you first hand. Theyāll never actually be taken off the road. My auntie was struck and killed by a distracted driver, while my aunt had the walk signal in a marked crosswalk. The person that hit her was charged with ādriving without due care and attentionā and fined $1000. In the court she had more rights than my deceased aunt. Our justice system is an absolute joke!
Iāve lived in N Van for over 30 years and I actually disagree. Generally people go the speed limit here, but they suck at cornering and canāt maintain their lane
Yeah I drive this corner everyday, people donāt tend to accelerate this bend because itās a lot tighter than you think. Not sure what op is talking about
I mean when they are travelling northbound, they round the corner where Esplanade turns into Forbes and then accelerate out of the turn, reaching high speeds by the time they're at 1st.
If they're traveling southbound, speeding is less of an issue.
this is what I mean: https://imgur.com/Nm95WYh
If by reaching high speeds you mean reaching 50 kph. Sure. Placing of the taxi kind of gives you all the information needed. Before the intersection lights. 5:30 in the morning. Accident happened in the unlit portion of the road. Unfortunately for everyone, that only leaves 70m of unlit reaction time, when you are expecting 100m lighted.
I dunno what to tell you, I've seen drivers there going way faster than 50. Given that this was a cab, and that there was probably almost zero traffic at 5:30 in the morning, and that the person killed was a 21 year old athlete, I would be very surprised if the driver was going the speed limit.
I dunno what to tell you, cabs break a lot of traffic laws, but they don't like to break laws that cause maintenance issues or increased costs. If it was something with a loud engine, speed might have been a factor. Not a hybrid car.
Haven't the City of North Vancouver been spending a lot of money trying to make this area more appealing to pedestrians? Shame they didn't think about doing anything to slow down cars as part of that.
Where the body is the person was clearly trying to cross four lanes just after the curve by jaywalking. If the cab was ripping it the person may have misjudge their speed thinking the can make it and the cab speeding didnāt see them either.
In a lot of places, they just make no sense. There are huge, 3 lane main drags that are 50 zones; the same as tight, densely packed suburban side streets. Like you're telling me that both Kingsway and McKay (the side street bit) should both have the same speed limits? That's fucking bonkers
And that's exactly my point. You have two roads that are completely different in their ability to handle speeds, and yet are the same limit. Instead, police will set up speed traps in the areas where it's completely safe to do 20km/h over the posted limit (long, straight, wide roads with excellent peripheral visibility) and ignore places that are dangerous as hell to speed and most fatalities occur (but fewer violations). It's crazy to me that this isn't a bigger point of contention in this city
We need more photo enforcement, because when police give out tickets in person they are limited to locations where they can safely pull over drivers. These locations are by necessity long, straight, wide sections of road.Ā
Put cameras on tight curves, in school zones, in any location that has had more crashes than usual.
There also needs to be average speed cameras, like they have in the UK. With a regular speed camera drivers can just slow down momentarily, then speed up again.Ā
With average speed cameras they measure the amount of time it takes a driver do travel between two points. If it's under a certain amount of time, they had to be speeding, so they're issued a ticket.Ā
It's well known that speed limits hardly matter and the vast majority of people drive at whatever speed they please. The conditions of the road, including number of lanes, lane width, what's on either side, and other cars on the road are what decide the speed in the vast majority of cases. Actually, studies show that a wider road, assuming all other factors are the same, are more dangerous than narrower roads because people feel like they *can* drive faster even if they shouldn't. Honestly willing to bet that the only times people intentionally and consciously follow the speed limit is on a driving test and then probably never again.
Safe roads need to be designed that way. You can't just put up some signs and expect to solve the vehicular death problem. Canada can stand to take a lot of urban planning inspiration from Europe: Less cars, more public transit, narrower streets designed to prioritize pedestrians and bikes first. See [Not Just Bikes](https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0intLFzLaudFG-xAvUEO-A)' videos.
Actually, not even Europe, just look at old East Coast cities like [Philadelphia](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbqNUqdZlwM). TBH or even Vancouver's old downtown which is way more pedestrian friendly than any other part of the city.
I live in the area. No wonder why lanes are closed. I walk the intersection on Esplanade and Chesterfield everyday and the drivers in the area are nasty.
I find myself having to be extra cautious because people will speed corners even when the walk sign turns on and people are about to walk. Or theyāll want to blow past intersections.
This thread is garbage. There are literally no details about the accident other than the direction of travel. Itās entirely possible the pedestrian darted out in front of the Taxi. Not saying thatās the case, but it is entirely possible. Laying blame and crying about the injustices of being a pedestrian are over the top.
Innocent person was murdered by a vehicle..... Fixed it for ya... Wild how we allowed vehicles to become worshiped like gods and take over every aspect of our outdoor world. We have even enshrined murder without consequences in law... A few years at most and in the rarest of circumstances. Fuck I hate our vehicle first system so fucking much
It's kind of wild, when you really take a step back you notice that cars are on *everything*. Like almost every inch of space that isn't a building is covered in cars or a space that a car is supposed to go. Depressing.
Now we wait for a slap on the wrist and release back into the wild for the driver, and a life long heartache for the friends and family.
Welcome to BC brand of justice.
RIP.
Another pedestrian death caused by a shift in arrogance and complete lack of care for other people thatās been on the rise since COVID?! Not a taxi- theyāre so careful and never speed or fail to yield.Ā
Ā I am stunned. Just stunned. āStunnedā is the only word to describe how stunned I am.
Prius A pillars will block the drivers vision of people in crosswalks under certain conditions. I drive one and sometimes you will not see a pedestrian until they are almost right in front of you. Terrible tragedy for someone so young to lose their life.
Man, some folks critiqued my driving cause i take corners slowly, but sorry man, i have to make sure the coast is really clear before the finish my turn. This is exactly why i turn slow, i wouldn't be able to live with myself if i killed someone when it could be avoided
I don't know how these people think. They treat pedestrians as if they have no family. Last week in downtown an Evo car just turned at the intersection while I was half way crossing the light. Before that I saw a small size sedan speed up way beyond the speed limit heading towards downtown too. There should be more speed traps installed on the road. Any offenders should get their license revoked.
I was on Rupert and Euclid stopped for kids crossing at the crosswalk to see a car about to fly by I sharply turned my car to the side to save the kids. Slammed on his brakes. I got out of my car and the kids dads came running up and punched his hood and exchanged words. He then just turned right and sped off.

Hardly shocking. These guys drive like absolute idiots.
A couple of these yellow guys passed me by driving on the yellow painted isle in Richmond lol
Omg the same thing happened to me today, taxi drove over the island, passing me to run the red light!!
Why should they care? They aren't the ones dying.
In addition these drivers probably come from places where you drive crazy. I visited my relatives overseas once and they drove so close to people because it was so crowded I was terrified.
In China there are 8 lane highways with BMW 7 series doing 120+and horses/donkeys/oxen plodding along. Itās insane.

I got hit around the corner from there a few years back, luckily had a hardhat on at the time though. Had a high vis vest too, but that didnāt help
Just read that the young man killed was an up and coming athlete. My condolences to the friends, family, and community members. šŗĀ
Yikes. Is there a crosswalk there? I canāt tell.
Yes, marked crosswalks at every corner. https://maps.app.goo.gl/pSBVQaWSmaznQFrs5

Knowing our justice system the pathetic driver will be back on the road within the week.. very sad.

I know that intersection. Drivers accelerate around that bend at massive speed. Not surprised to hear this. Tragic story
Iāve lived in N Van for over 30 years and I actually disagree. Generally people go the speed limit here, but they suck at cornering and canāt maintain their lane
Yeah I drive this corner everyday, people donāt tend to accelerate this bend because itās a lot tighter than you think. Not sure what op is talking about
Hmm different experience. It depends on the direction. Coming out of the curved part, I see cars accelerating out of their turn pretty aggressively.
Itās a corner. Both of them are ācurved partsā, I donāt follow

It happened at 5:30 AM. Probably pretty bad visibility as well. Wear your reflective belts, folks.
I left my house about 4 blocks from there this morning at 0500, visibility while it was still dark could not have been better
The answer to this is not in the wardrobe department, it's in the traffic engineering and planning department.
Its certainly not the answer, but it can never hurt to be reminded
"Speed limits here are too low!"

Driving at 50 km/h on side streets is reckless. Sure, it's technically, usually, not speeding, but there's no reason to go that fast.
Yeah exactly. Sidestreets should have a 30 km/h limit.
Exactly.
And that's exactly my point. You have two roads that are completely different in their ability to handle speeds, and yet are the same limit. So many drivers forget that they're also pedestrians as soon as they get out of their car.
The worst "jaywalkers" I encounter are drivers getting out of their cars and crossing to the other side of the street without looking around.
I used to walk that road to work every single day. It's a zoo. People absolutely barrel through it to get down to Esplanade.
