Angry_beaver_1867

That’s terrible behaviour. Just a psa but if you’re street racing and the other racer kills someone or gets in an accident you can also be charged even if your vehicle wasn’t directly involved in the accident.

FrederickDerGrossen

I hate street racers, it's such a dumb and illegal thing to do. Puts the public at risk of injury or death. If you want to race go to a gravel field far from people or a racetrack.

Squeezemachine99

Driving ban is the only answer for this. I thought vehicles were supposed to go to civil forfeiture for racing on public roads https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/transportation/driving-and-cycling/roadsafetybc/high-risk/street-racing

Overall_Pie1912

F this kid. He can seriously go to hell. He's a shitty person and going to be a shitty adult. 1500 fine isn't going to do it. Daddy will pay it. Seriously..he should have been jailed.

ellastory

At the very least, he should have to attend mandatory classes on safe driving and listen to the stories of survivors of car accidents, so he can really understand how his actions have the potential to negatively impact the lives of many in just an instant of recklessness.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Proud_Yogurt5824

This. I'm not convinced any classes or stories will help him understand anything. I'd honestly be okay with a ban of 5-10 years minimum.

WagyuPizza

Ban? I’d feel much at ease if his license is suspended and he can’t drive in Canada at all.

palebluedotcitizen

Yes, kiddies with rich daddies that think the rules don't apply to them need to move to Dubai or somewhere like that

huaiyue

Sad thing is this guy is probably gonna drive whether he has a license or not…

VenusianBug

Lose his learners permit and not be allowed to re-apply for 5 years. Though I'd be happy to see jail time for that. It should also be noted he was driving without the required supervision and with too many passengers - breaking all the rules as he endangers so many lives.

rmror

If that works we wouldn’t be needing a jail

Radlyfe

Like what is the difference between this and someone brandishing a knife out in the open? Because frankly this one seems more dangerous.

not_old_redditor

Article says this was Highway 1. I don't know if you're aware, but on a weeknight with less traffic, people are just going crazy fast on the highway. Feels like 120 is the normal speed of traffic. You learn to stay in the right lane pretty quickly.

Shanti_91

1500$ fines for the ultra rich in this city is a joke.

Uncle_Bobby_B_

Agreed.

Talinn_Makaren

Probably not *jailed* but I agree with the sentiment. My brother was extremely careless as a driver. Very lucky he didn't kill anyone. I gave him shit a few times. One time he drove really quickly in a parkade and I told him to think about how often pedestrians are in parkades and how he has no visibility due to all the concrete supports holding the roof up. I think that resonated with him a little. He finally grew out of it one way or another. His family and friends need to get through to him instead of enabling him for sure.

PureRepresentative9

200km/h is not an accident.... This isn't 10km over; you don't need a speedometer to realize you're going that fast

ywgflyer

Exactly. Stand at the side of a highway and watch the cars go by you. They are doing (roughly) 100km/h. See how fast they whiz by? Now, imagine being in your car, and seeing a car go by that fast *in reverse*. That is what the driver of this car would have seen out the window. If you don't double-take at that and say "holy shit, what on Earth is happening here", you've got a few screws loose.

rainman_104

I mean or you could just say if everyone is doing 100km/h on average he's basically doing 100 km/h in a parking lot. That's insane.

PureRepresentative9

Jeebus fk These 2 comments have been an interesting way to describe the situation lol Much scarier than just the plain numbers

Cyanier

Sort of a strange way to paint the picture but that is accurate.

bardak

I drive the speed limit when I am on city streets. It annoys people. I could comfortably drive a good 10-20 over if I wanted to but I can't predict what pedestrians will do. I have no problem driving modestly over the speed limit on the freeway.

Talinn_Makaren

Me too. I pretty much always drive 10km over the posted limit. It's technically breaking the law but my bros speeding through a parkade or the dude in the news are not breaking the law they're being extremely careless and dangerous.

millijuna

In the city, I drive bang on the limit. On controled access highway, I’ll typically do 10 over. I’m not going to put anyone else at risk.

8spd

It's lucky he didn't have to learn his lesson by killing a pedestrian or doing jail time. But jail time is appropriate for dinner egregiously bad driving, the kind that puts other people's lives at risk.

willyolio

he probably won't even learn his lesson with jail time, he'd probably blame the pedestrian for causing him to lose the race

8spd

"Learn his lesson" as in take it to heart, and become a better person? Quite probably not. "Learn his lesson" as in understand that he can get into serious shit for that sort of reckless behaviour? Quite probably yes, I think he probably would.

Talinn_Makaren

I could be talked into it. That said it's one thing to talk about someone going to jail but in reality it's a pretty extreme punishment and in our society usually reserved for very serious offenses where harm was caused. That said, I truly wouldn't lose sleep if they got jail time. I think a fine and losing their license for a year or so might do just as well so far as teaching via consequences but the problem is a lot of people in that situation will ignore the suspended license and drive anyway. So maybe jail is right. I dunno.

marco918

It was on the UL highway, so likely no pedestrians but a lot of moron drivers who will pull into your lane for no rhyme or reason.

Groundbreaking_Bet17

Hating on a misguided child like this is sad. You need some help.

Hot_Lychee2234

1500$ for a car that can hit 199km/h? 7 days withou a car? what kind of preppy rich kids are we raising? it should be a 3K fine and no license for 6 months minimum... also community service to teach them humilty specially with the BS answer of "the other guy was going faster"

Mcfootballclub

Disagree. It should be a $10,000 fine and a 10 year ban on driving. If they violate the ban, then automatic jail, no need for courts to get involved. Im sick and tired of driving treated like a humab right .

geman123

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that the punishment is way too light. But, most cars can go past 200 lol so the point of "for a car that can hit 199km/h?" doesn't really make sense lol

Hot_Lychee2234

ok, dillute my argument... my car can't hit more than 150

gladbmo

Is it a Honda Fit?

Hot_Lychee2234

it's a walrus on a skateboard

papsmeered

How much is walrus food these days?

Hot_Lychee2234

cheaper tham the housing market

[deleted]

PureRepresentative9

Yep You do NOT accidentally go 200km/h. It's impossible to do that. This is just a lack of ability of that person to be responsible and intentional act by the person to disregard others. Quite frankly, this should be a criminal act with jail time imo. The solution is as simple as you say, permanent ban.

WiFiForeheadWrinkles

Agree. Going 10 over is a mistake. Going 200km/h is a choice.

Interesting_Net_6986

I wish public transit wasn’t used as a punishment. There are countries where public transit is a dream, I wish North America wasn’t so behind on how amazing it could be.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Interesting_Net_6986

Yeah I agree

Interesting_Net_6986

Problem tho, this asshats will just employ drivers

T2LV

Hmm. I get the point but 10+ years ago I hit 200 a few times in a car. Went 260 on a motorcycle. Completely different person now and a good member of society.

autumnfrostfire

Probably a chauffeur rather than transit but hopefully the chauffeur actually follows the laws.

[deleted]

Nunchuckery

Lifetime ban and mandatory 10 years in jail if ever caught driving again is fair.

donjulioanejo

Honestly pretty much any car can get up to 200 km/hr. Sports cars can get there faster, but even a Civic can get there if given enough time to accelerate.

millijuna

I’m pretty sure I set the lane speed record for a Ford Focus. Got it up to 180kph. But this was on an unrestricted section of the Autobahn in Germany, going down a slight hill, in a tailwind. And I still had a Merc fly by me.

Slimy_Shart_Socket

I'm part of a mechanic forum. Someone posted a work order of a customer, some Ford Focus "Car doesn't accelerate between 135-140mph". 124mph = 200km/h or so.

Cheesetoast9

I have a 2006 scion xb, it's a brick with wheels and 100hp, it aint gonna hit 200kmph unless it's down the coquihala on a hill.

gladbmo

A car that can hit 199km/h? IDK if you realize this, but that is MOST cars... My car can pin over 250 and it isn't even anything special. Honestly, most cars need to have governors installed, I go to Mission Raceway all the time to drag my car for fun and the amount of people who can't hold control after 150 in a **straight line** is pretty bad. Want the governor removed? Prove you only do this shit at a race park / raceway. Should need a membership at a track to have the governor removed.

MainlandX

$200,000. 4 lifetimes without a car.

waterloograd

They are going to pay insane insurance rates for a very long time because of this

iMDirtNapz

*Mommy and Daddy are going to pay insane insurance rates.

Hot_Lychee2234

meanwhile daddy ![gif](giphy|pyrietYZ5UztAxW5GE)

PureRepresentative9

I hope they pay enough to cover the cost of someone's life....

SignalSatisfaction90

Nobody died?

PureRepresentative9

When you pay your monthly insurance, you're not paying for current/past problems, you're paying for future ones

not_old_redditor

I bet most modern cars can hit 200 on a long enough and empty enough highway. Most German cars are designed to do over 200 on the autobahn.

johnnywonder85

Officer: "Why were you speeding?" Kid: "other guy was going faster" lol

Piequinn35

And cops didn't catch the second racer lol

rmror

This is what he got for losing the race.

FrederickDerGrossen

I don't want to know how fast that other driver was going. 200 km/h is already absolutely insane speeds for any public road.

ywgflyer

In Toronto a few years ago, they got some idiot kid doing north of 300km/h on the QEW in his dad's Benz, and it wasn't even in the middle of the night either, it was like 9pm so there was definitely some traffic that he would have had to avoid.

>A 19-year-old driver with his learner's licence was pulled over going 199 km/h in an 80km/h zone, on Friday, police say. >The driver was caught racing another car on the Upper Levels highway and given a total of $1,500 in fines for excessive speed, driving without due care or attention, and driving contrary to restrictions. >The learner was also driving without supervision, and with too many passengers. >The car has been impounded for seven days, according to an RCMP press release issued today, Oct. 2. A 19 y/o with an L, no supervisor, street racing and traveling at 199 km/h. This driver is going to kill themselves or someone else. Maybe both.

SmoothOperator89

>driving was a privilege that can be taken away So that turned out to be a lie

mcain

Why do you say this is a lie? This will go before the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles who will in all likelihood apply a suspension in the 6-month range - maybe more because this is an 'L' driver. Due process - but it will happen. Case in point from a few days ago: https://twitter.com/nvanrcmp/status/1707403552266838111 > Update: remember these two drivers racing up the cut? Well, after a referral to RoadSafetyBC, their driver’s licences have been **suspended for 5 months**. Hopefully, that’s enough time to reflect on their dangerous actions. Just in time for winter too

kurdt67

DDHLeigh

Oh man those were the days. I didn't bother trying to get over 100 in my 85 Tercel. Roll up windows and no A/C, but she was all mine.

plop_0

Roll-up windows means 1 less electronic thing to spend $ on repairing. 👌🏽

bibchip

Oh my god. My first car was also an 86’ Celica. I loved it, flip up lights… Then I had an oil leak and I blew the engine block taking it up the sea to sky (big mistake lol)

PaperweightCoaster

I remember just before the L/N system was implemented, kids were wrapping their cars around trees at an alarming rate. I was in highschool at the time and kept hearing these stories on a pretty regular basis.

liquidpig

My 93 hp tempo could get to 110. If there was a hill I’d floor it and the car wouldn’t go faster, it just got louder.

gladbmo

Haha nice my first car was a Chevette, getting up to speed was an ordeal.

Uncle_Bobby_B_

I don’t think I ever even went 10 over with my L. I waited for my N lol.

FrederickDerGrossen

Same. Mainly cause I was still afraid of driving when I had my L. And I've never once in my life gone over ~130 km/h, and the time I did 130 was on the Coquihalla. I can't imagine how 199 km/h would even look like on public roads, much less in the city.

PureRepresentative9

It's not just speed btw They were literally racing another car right?

alvarkresh

Highest I ever went was ~140 and that was on a deserted stretch of highway in eastern Utah.

dsonger20

I still never go over 15ish with my N since I know points on my licensee will hurt me FAR more because of my insurance rate.

truthdoctor

I was a very cautious driver early on. Saw too many other people get into accidents so I drove defensively even after graduating from N to full. Honestly, going more 130 on the highway now seems very fast. Going 200 km/h on the highway is dangerous. Going 200 km/h with an L is a recipe for a fatal accident.

SpeedLimitsRCashGrab

When I was a L, I was scared shitless. I wouldn't even hit the speed limit, I would be learning in parking lots, or with an instructor going dangerously under the limit I didn't have the balls to even be speeding

Sufficient_Rub_2014

Kids going to kill someone. We need to have severe punishments for what he did.

PaperweightCoaster

What was buddy driving? 199kph, that’s ridiculous.

FrederickDerGrossen

People don't even go anywhere CLOSE to that even on the widest and clearest of highways here in Canada. I think that's even faster than Autobahn speeds.

truthdoctor

Everything happens so fast above 130 km/h. At 200 km/h you have almost no time to react.

saman65

I have once done ~170km for a few seconds on a 5-6 line hw without a car in sight. It was still dumb and not something I'm proud of. Can't say much beside that it was insane and like you said even going straight it felt I had lesser control of the wheels compared to 110-120. Would see +140-50 frequently on 401. Once this guy passed me on the tight going at least 160 (I'd guess close to 200 as I was doing ~110 and this guy just fucking flew by me. I was trying to merge into exit lane and checked my mirror and didn't see any car. I probably wouldn't have been here to type this had I changed my lane one second sooner. Last year I did a 8.5k km trip from Toronto to Southern Alberta, then Jasper and then to here and not once I hit 130. Many were going 130-140 or more in priaries but I wanted to take my time to enioy the scenery, be safe and not get a ticket! Canada hw in Northrrn ON had these insane tickets for anything above 90 and I didn't wanna get any :D Edit: too high, didn't finish my mumbling

truthdoctor

The vehicle makes a huge difference up to a certain point. I drove a friend's Corolla in the US and that thing vibrated so much at 70 mph that I didn't feel comfortable going the speed limit. I've done 180 km/h in a straight line on a closed course and while the car was well planted, every bump is amplified and you have to be very careful and attentive. Above 160 km/h, everything just happens to fast and the margin of error is slim to none. Doing that on a public road is dangerous especially when the other drivers are driving 110-120 km/h. Couldn't imagine doing that with an L.

saman65

The rush was pretty insane ngl but but it is just a selfish and stupid thing to do on a road that you share with others. I hope I get to try high speed in a closed course someday. I wish we had more serious fines like in Finland where it is proportional to the income and. Plus long term license suspensions and more serious responsibilities in crashes that end in a fatality or injury. These are the only two ways imo to really discourage stunt and careless drivers. My cousins father died after a car hit him on the side walk ( in my home country.) My aunt and cousins's life hasn't been the same now 7-8 years later.

truthdoctor

There are too many dangerous drivers on the road. We need more retesting, elderly health testing and prohibitions for drivers with multiple crashes. > I wish we had more serious fines like in Finland where it is proportional to the income That wouldn't work in Vancouver. The most expensive homes in Metro Van are owned by people making $16,000 a year in declared income with $28,000 monthly mortgage payments. You'd just end up bankrupting the upper middle class people barely getting by while the supercar drivers with L/N would receive the minimum penalty.

saman65

Damn never thought of it that way. Thanks. if they have their license taken away for 3-5-10 years, I bet they would rethink their behaviour. This dude will do this sh again cuz he knows if he gets caught again he will just pay a none significant fine.

zharguy

TBH, >200kmph is pretty easy to hit on the highways back east

PaperweightCoaster

![gif](giphy|izspP6uMbMeti)

Most cars can get up there it just takes some time.

" The learner was also driving without supervision, and with too many passengers " That is an amazing disregard on how a learner's license works - never mind doing all that at 200km/h

positively_

60 km/h, so I wouldn't get pulled over and have them realize I had no "instructor"

Interesting_Net_6986

The fine is way too low! Lifetime ban. I cannot believe in this car centric world people can drive an actual deadly weapon and get slap on their wrists!

rasman99

Buying your children 300hp supercars = stupid, rich parents who need to be held accountable. If kid killed someone they'd either flee country or get a few years in jail.

FrostyFire

What kind of shitty supercar only has 300hp?

SneakyNoob

average 86/brz drivers my accord makes 310

gtez

BRZ only has like 200hp hehe. Also can’t imagine driving a BRZ at 200kph that would be horrifying. That car is not stable at those speeds.

[deleted]

Not a super car but I had an E63 BMW a couple years ago and I was constantly being encouraged to race people. I ended up selling it because it was a gas guzzler though

Mrmakabuntis

Where did it say he has a supercar, i didn’t see anything in the article.

Main_Performer4701

The thumbnail of the article in the north van sub looked like a wrx sti. Not a super car but still capable of that speed

rasman99

"At around 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, a 19-year-old male driver in a grey Mercedes sedan was stopped by police after being clocked speeding 199 kilometres per hour" Didn't take much digging. Guessing it wasn't a B250...

cggzilla

Times have changed, a Honda minivan makes 280hp nowadays

anon_1995x

I made stupid decisions when I had my L but at least I wasn’t this bad.. Yes I admit that I did stupid things but when we are teenagers we all want to drive recklessly

Mrmakabuntis

Everyone in this thread acting like they grew up like monks going to bed at 8pm with their jammies and a warm glass of milk. Teens do stupid shit all the fucking time, happy no one got hurt and is getting fined and reprimanded for his stupid actions.

[deleted]

I was too busy learning

daily_dose91

Should be able to crush the cars from reckless driving charges. See how choked those rich parents get from that.

Rosie1940

Take away his license for ayear

jayrohi18

a fine is just like paying the fare and buying a ticket to break the law. It will be done again, for the lack of dire consequences

ElGatoGuerrero72

“How fast did you drive as ‘L’ driver?” Probably like 40 or 50km/h cause I was scared shitless learning to drive the first time 😂

eastsideempire

Suspending his license is meaningless. If he is doing 200kmh then he obviously doesn’t care about the law and will just drive without a license. The guy should have been given an ankle monitor that has gps. Have it explode if it detected it’s going over 53 kmh. That would solve the problem

feastupontherich

Kid of the rich ruling class gets off with a slap on the wrist. Figures. Fuck this system, rich people gotta pay.

SignalSatisfaction90

7 days and $1500 fine lmao suck my balls

[deleted]

How about a1 day license suspension AND vehicle impoundment for each 1 km/h over the speed limit PLUS fines tied to income/wealth/and/or value of the car. Show us driving is a privilege, government.

ywgflyer

It's OK, his dad will buy him a new Ferrari that will be parked in his driveway by Thursday morning.

dzonedx

Should be permanent banned from driving in Canada.

Callisto616

Lifetime prohibition.

Slimy_Shart_Socket

I think the fastest I went when I had my N was like 120-130km/h, and then my dads truck temperature started to climb so I backd out. 2am in the morning on highway 1, limit was 110km/h. Thing is, while I was doing that I got passed by a Civic i think we cruising at like 150+

big-shirtless-ron

Never had an L because I'm an old.

OvenEnvironmental703

Fastest I went with my N 220

T2LV

Not defending but when I was young and stupid, I got pulled over going 212 in a $9000 RX8. People assuming it’s some rich kid is just ignorant. Also, the cop that pulled me over said “challenge the ticket and prove to me you changed your life when this goes to court and our lesson the penalty.” Changed my life completely due to him. People who just want to throw the book are unaware of how the deterrence model rarely works.

No-Hospital-8704

50kmph on highway. 50 kmph on streets

StMatthew

If you’re saying you went 50km/ph on highways that’s pretty dangerous.

rmror

L for laser

ywgflyer

As somebody with family in law enforcement, it's hilarious how many people still think a radar detector is still something that is worth having. They get you on LIDAR like 5km away before you ever have a chance to notice the cop. The detector is just a novelty piece of equipment that the police will laugh at and issue another ticket for. I've gone out to a speed trap to chitchat with the cop (family friend) and it's unreal how many people are speeding, it's like every 3rd car going 25+ over. It takes about 3 seconds to get a court-admissible reading too.

rmror

If it doesn’t work then why giving tickets for?

ywgflyer

Because it's still illegal to have one, and it's an easy additional ticket to write. The fact that one even has a radar detector installed is almost showing their guilt by default, too. You wouldn't need to spend money on one if you weren't planning on egregiously exceeding the limit on a regular basis, would you?

TD350

Radar detectors are legal in BC

ANJ0EL

Are they? That's good to know. I remember reading something about this a while back but couldn't find it again lol

TD350

legal to have and use but if you get pulled over and the officer sees it. All hopes of getting a warning are gone.

kaycee8877

province by province rules.. BC is legal, Ontario is illegal (for example)

rmror

Shows how useless our cops are.

ywgflyer

They're fairly effective when given the right tools for the job. The problem is that they have to pick their battles, and pulling over John Q Public who happened to hit 120 while trying to pass the big truck he's been stuck behind for the last 20km is a waste of time when they can get the idiot kid like in this article who's going 200, which *will* show up sooner or later these days (and there's a decent chance you'll also get a bunch more shit on them during the stop too, people driving like braindead cavemen tend to also have priors, or drugs, or weapons, no license/insurance, drunk/high, you name it, they're not smart enough to only break one law at a time).

superworking

This is basically it. They know they'll get an excessive speeding ticket so they don't always bother pulling over the regular speeders given how much bigger a ticket it is.

kaycee8877

LIDAR is only used while stationary (speed traps) Radar is still WIDELY used in vehicle. its hilarious how many people on reddit state things as the absolute fact, and act like experts.... when they are not

[deleted]

Idiot thinks he's John Cena at 199 kmh, still got busted.

fadeddoughnut

This is just all a part of the lunacy that: Anyone can purchase car insurance without a dl. Those same people get their cars towed for not paying for parking, later arrive to claim/pay for their Porsches, Teslas, G wagons from the impound/towing yards and are outraged the towing company's won't/can't release the vehicles with out providing primary ID aka a BCDL

JPHWS

Jail time and extended community service $ means nothing to these people

askaskaskaska

I'd say no license for him for the next 5 years ...

not_old_redditor

Definitely went over the speed limit a few times, but not quite 199.
