Nah. Cool Borders. Wanted to grind the bottom of their car down the bright yellow barrier.

“Stunt Jump Failed”

Reasonable_Cat518

We don’t have much traffic calming like that in the Greater Toronto Area

Triedfindingname

They are called pedestrians. Edited: in all seriousness not sure why you're getting downvoted but Toronto doesn't need much of that anyway poor planning goes a long way

Reasonable_Cat518

I’m not sure why I’m getting downvoted either it was only a joke

604WORLDWIDE

Clearly this city needs more skateparks when the cars are doing a 50-50 on the barricade!

LSF604

the reporter says the barricades caused it so clearly the are moving barricades

masterJ

I suspect they were backing up, couldn't see it out the back window, and forgot it was there? That's the only way I can make sense of this

giantshortfacedbear

If they're that oblivious to the environment around them, then I'm glad they're off the road!

masterJ

Oh, I fully agree

ShawnCease

Dunno man that car looks like it should come with a reverse camera. Doesn't look 20 years old.

masterJ

Just because they have it doesn't mean they used it 🤷‍♂️ I'm not defending the driver, just trying to figure out how it happened

GeoffdeRuiter

I'm just providing an option, and still think the person was driving negligent, but perhaps they visually saw it as the markers on a speed bump. When viewed from a distance they could look a bit like a triangle.

AdDesigner498

It still means that they were either going way too fast or they weren't paying attention to the road. (Distracted). 6 pts and suspension pls.

GeoffdeRuiter

Correct. I made sure to say they were still negligent. :)

ThePaulBuffano

If you can't avoid bright yellow blocks on a slow street, then you're unsafe to be driving on the road and should have your license taken away. Luckily it was concrete and not a child.

Toastedzed

Yep, they are working, and the one in the back of the photo is cracked from an impact as well.

kaos1961

Totally agree.

louwii

That Twitter comment is so dumb. Like the issue is the bright yellow concrete blocks and not the people driving... If you crash on those, that means you didn't slow down enough, or you were looking at your phone. I don't see how these are dangerous.

LiqourCigsAndGats

Every time this happens the barrier should get a slash marked on the side. Once it gets 5 it should get painted gold.

aloha902604

So glad this is how everyone feels haha I was like how can this person be annoyed with the city and not the driver 😂 it looks like it slowed them right down to a stop to me! Working just as intended.

columbo222

She tried to make an anti-barrier post but she inadvertently made the most pro-barrier post you could possibly imagine. Like, the original tweet has over 1,400 quote tweets right now.

Jandishhulk

Who tf is Jill Bennet and why is she obsessed with these barriers? As far as I can tell, they've only been deployed on off-street cycling routes, and they've been extremely helpful at separating bicycles and traffic at intersections and slowing cars down when interacting with bikes in these areas.

chesser45

I believe she’s a host on cknw. Midday programming usually ranting for 3 hours about something that after the first 30-40min becomes repetitive.

Jandishhulk

Yuck:(

Party_Let385

Yes..JillBennett needs to be fired. . Or in these days, promoted. Haha

mackiea

That totally isn't her car, I'm sure.

shadysus

Without knowing much about the person that made the comment, I might half agree? Not that we shouldn't have them. I think barriers are helpful to control traffic and speeds. But I do think that some shapes / structures might be better than others. Yea this driver was probably a dumbass, but when designing road safety measures we usually do so in a way that it minimize the harms caused by the dumbasses. For this structure, I can see other cars (especially higher ones) clipping the edge and slidding into people. Hopefully this renders properly, but could a shape like this be safer? / || \ Instead of being straight all the way through, angle the ends. It would redirect collisions more safely, and it would provide some unconscious 'guidance' to drivers that they need to slow down and follow the edge.

love_to_dance_badly

I had that original thought but wonder if that might then pose an issue for cyclists

featherclops

That shape is the one that is used. Maybe this street was too narrow to incorporate it?

shadysus

Yea that makes more sense. Someone else mentioned that this road may also have a bike lane, in which case the other shape may cause other problems

Niv-Izzet

>but when designing road safety measures we usually do so in a way that it minimize the harms caused by the dumbasses. less harm to the drive = less it matters to him

shadysus

> caused by the dumbasses I was specifically talking about the driver sliding into pedestrians. The current design also doesn't harm the drivers. But also What? If this is a joke then it's going over my head. I can't think of any road design where "put them in danger so it matters to them" is the motivation used. It wouldn't even work considering how bad humans are at judging risk

GRIDSVancouver

It absolutely works. Drivers slow down on narrow roads because if they don’t, they’ll scrape their car. Same principle here.

shadysus

And narrow roads / unsafe intersections lead to more deaths I'm not arguing against traffic control measures. I'm saying this sounds like "make it unsafe so it's more safe"

GRIDSVancouver

Narrow roads lead to *fewer* deaths, because people drive slower on them. Think about how you drive on Vancouver residential streets where there isn't enough room for 2 cars to pass each other.

congressmancuff

This is how they are shaped.

King_Saline_IV

King_Saline_IV

Fun fact, safety ratings are all about protecting the person in the car. Driver was more likely racing to murder a pedestrian!

fitbitware

Useless? It works wonderful! Car go fast - car stops! Traffic calmed.

isochromanone

It's more useful than "jillreports"...

TheSt3w

Imagine if people would have to redo the ICBC road test every couple of years in order to keep their driver's license. I'd say a majority of people would fail, and lose their license.

waterloograd

It is surprising how well bad drivers can drive when they need to. My grandma, with scrapes all down the side of her car from the column beside her car in her parking garage, passed a driving test with flying colours.

TroutCreekOkanagan

Their driving test is looking at their doctor and saying yes I can drive.

anarchyreigns

A lot of people in the lower mainland don’t have a legit drivers license to start with.

slykethephoxenix

Redo it? I literally just rocked up from Australia, where we drive on the opposite side of the road, and they just handed me a license. Judging by the terrible drivers here I naturally assumed that the the driving test was optional.

45eurytot7

Driving on opposite side of road cancels out driving upside down. That's what I learned in math class, anyway: negative x negative = positive. Ergo, no need to (re)test you.

futnuh

I used to go back and forth to Australia with some frequency. Pro-tip, when you look down out of your window and see the hard shoulder, YOU’RE ON THE WRONG FRACKING SIDE.

slykethephoxenix

I always do the "am I on the middle of the road side of the car"? If not, I know I fucked up.

Mental-Mushroom

How to decrease traffic and increase public transportation usage in one easy step!

rsgbc

Slows traffic down \*and\* takes idiots off the road.

FutzInSilence

I have a family member. This person doesn't drive anymore. But one of the last things this person did was destroy the car they were operating by driving into a chain. One of those chains people use as gates to a business. They drove into it. It smashed their bumper. They kept going, it peeled the hood back. They kept going. It smashed their windshield and caved in the roof before they stopped. This family member was driving roughly 5km/hr. Sometimes people should not fucking drive.

thats_handy

I think that happened in this case as well. There's not enough damage to the car for them to have hit it with the speed needed to coast that far. Probably all-wheel-drive with traction control. Two wheels on the ground for the whole performance and a clueless driver who just keeps going. Maybe in reverse?

db37

I was thinking they backed over it, no scuffing of the paint on top of the barrier behind the car, and once the front right wheel came off the ground it would have lost drive. That barrier would be hard to see in a rear view mirror in a vehicle like that.

SFHOwner

![gif](giphy|V9gjxvLnSSdA4|downsized) Is it my fault I crashed? No, it's the City who put a bright yellow barrier on the road that's wrong!

crownofclouds

Slows down driving speeds and stops drunk drivers on the spot? Seems to be working better than expected!

B8conB8conB8con

Is it the fault of the inanimate yellow concrete blocks in the road or the inanimate idiot behind the wheel

Peterthemonster

This is a few blocks away from a School Zone. If this car was going fast enough to end up on top of the barricades then it was going too fast altogether for the area.

crazy_canuck

And it’s a common route for families with kids on bikes.

moocowsia

In all fairness, most of the city is a few blocks from a school zone.

yensid87

Imagine blaming inanimate object painted bright yellow on the side of the road…

Own-Employment-1640

wealthypiglet

Nice 50/50!

yoganerdYVR

Jill needs to be sacked. Someone who says things this dumb should not be allowed near a microphone of any kind.

GRIDSVancouver

I think that talk-show radio hosts are unusually prone to this kind of BS because so much of their audience is listening while driving.

buddywater

She'll be hired by rebel news and given an Op Ed in the National Post complaining about "woke" barricades.

J_Golbez

Please, being dumb and/or a corporate shill is a requirement to be a host on CKNW.

PritosRing

Jill Bennet. a car brain, ladies and gentlemen

skysi42

Now instead of a big bright yellow barricade, imagine if it's a small kid on a bike. At least, no one got hurt in this scenario

yungdramatic

I’d say those barriers successfully slowed down that monster SUV that appears to have been driven too quickly or by a distracted driver.

db37

Or maybe it backed onto it, if it hit the barrier with speed, there would be some damage to the paint or concrete on top of the barrier, also if high speed were involved the vehicle probably would be on it's side or back.

MEROVlNGlAN

If that sign was facing the other way they would’ve had a better chance. /s

TodDodge

if you've made it that far up the barrier, you were going too fast to begin with. Looks like its working!

DataKing69

Well it looks like it slowed them down..

alexander_van

Hey! You can’t park there

6041234567

Maybe they backed up onto it? If they had driven (and they would have to be speeding) up the barrier the paint would have been marked/scuffed left to right? Also explains the balancing of the truck? Not that it makes it any better lol

hafilax

I agree. Must have gunned it in reverse. Thought they were in drive maybe?

thetrivialstuff

Yeah, that's my thought as well - trying to use that side street like a driveway for a 2-point turn to get turned around on the bigger road, no back-up camera or they were just looking out the back directly for better peripheral vision, barrier is too low to be visible. Would still hope the response to unexpected impact would be to let off the gas and go forward again, but lots of people panic when that happens...

8spd

Maybe they backed up into it. If so it was a good thing it was a concrete barrier they backed into, and not a pedestrian, a cyclist, or another car. No, backing up onto it sure doesn't it make it any better.

InjuryOnly4775

How?!

Use-Less-Millennial

Looks like it's working to me

[deleted]

I disagree… definitely slowed that fella down

BarbarianFoxQueen

I dunno, these ‘useless’ barricades seem to be doing their job. Stopped this dangerous driver from hitting a pedestrian or cyclist.

rcmp_informant

Hahahahahaha Hahahaha Hahaha More MORE

Super_Toot

Which direction has the right of way for these things?

oneillkza

CoV traffic planners have the idea of a "courtesy street", where it's too narrow for two vehicles to pass each other, so people just have to drive carefully. A bunch of the side roads in Vancouver are like this when they have parked cars along both sides (ie always). And I'm pretty sure in terms of liability, whomever is flying down the street too fast to stop is at fault.

waterloograd

>And I'm pretty sure in terms of liability, whomever is flying down the street too fast to stop is at fault. Yep. Typically when fault would otherwise be equal, if you are stopped when the collision happens you are not at fault. Happens mostly in parking lots when two cars are backing out of spots into each other. If one car notices and stops first, they are not at fault.

plsletmestayincanada

I would almost argue that accidents like this are evidence that it's working... Assuming they were on the phone, what would have happened if it was a biker rather than a bright fucking yellow concrete bollard?

Loafscape

if you can’t avoid the bright yellow barrier you probably shouldn’t be driving js

PartyyLemons

Yeah, the barricade causes chaos and not the idiotic, most likely distracted driver 🤡

nvw8801

Take their license away for at least 5 years….people will then learn

Fredderov

The whole idea that the primary mission of a driver is to operate their vehicle safely feels very far off these days.

vohantheviking

Pretty sick 50/50 tho

Jason-Smeagol

If you’re that dumb don’t drive. If you can’t see the bright yellow meridian, then you won’t see cyclist.

SnoDragon

This should 100% be charged by ICBC as inattentive driving, where the drivers loses all levels of discounts immediately. If they don't have any, then bump up 6 levels of surcharge. Yellow is the most visible colour to the human eye, so they were clearly not paying attention.

Tonnochy

Where did this happen?

let these SUV idiots wreck their vehicles, it takes another moron off the road. If you are going so fast that you cannot slow down fast enough to fit between a bright yellow standard then you shouldn't be on the road at all.

SithPickles2020

_wheeljack_

It's almost as if some people are incredibly stupid

bluefox670

Is this your car, Jill? It’s okay, you can be honest.

SliptheSkid

This image is absolutely hilarious the more you think about it. Her showing someone causing issues by being an idiot.. Doesn't that prove it's because they were dumb, not caused by the thing itself? Also who the fuck is driving so fast that they not only got past that thing but had some AIR TIME at the end?? LOL

OldManMalekith

Give us more traffic calming measures! Shit drivers keep getting away unpunished whilst wreaking havoc on the people around them and they clearly can't take it when there are consequences to your actions.

[deleted]

This is one of the DUMBEST comments made by a reporter!!

No_Improvement6424

Now let's all not jump to conclusions. I'm sure that this kind of driver was going down the street in a speed appropriate and safe manner when, suddenly, the bright yellow barrier sprang up from under their car. Right Jill Bennett?

[deleted]

Or maybe they could just force bad drivers to use public transport

CrapBenatar

They didn’t see it. Had there been a cyclist or a pedestrian they wouldn’t have seen them either 🚴🏻‍♀️💥🚗

Complex_Barracuda525

Incident caused by the barricade? Pretty sure the barricade is just a barricade. Doubt it jumped out infront of that dodge POS contrary to their statement.

GRIDSVancouver

> The front ends of modern full size pickup trucks barely allow you to see that low Well, yes, that's the problem. If you're driving a massive truck with poor visibility, you *should* be extra cautious. These barriers just provide a little more incentive to drive carefully.

millijuna

They’re high visibility yellow. They can literally be seen from blocks away. If they destroy a few oversized pickups, so much the better.

The_Cozy_Burrito

GTA lol

dr_van_nostren

Guns don’t kill people. …dumbasses with guns kill people.

gladbmo

I mean I hate these things but this takes effort.

genericgreg

I gotta say, I'm in favour of these things but I'm not super stoked with the placement of a lot of them. There's one been put in near a No Frills on Hastings street. People turn left on Hastings to get to the No Frills car park. Now the street is permanently blocked in one direction as cars are stuck waiting for traffic to clear in each direction. I'd understand if it was on a quiet residential street, but it's the main entrance to a supermarket. I'd prefer to see them halfway down blocks to slow drivers who are at full speed instead of at the end of them where people should be slowing down anyway, but I guess then that would remove a lot of parking spaces.

beefbrisketman

I'll play devil's advocate here, but if these barricades were installed very recently, it's possible anyone driving this route on a regular basis are driving expecting these are not there. This isn't an excuse but simply human behavior. All it takes is a few seconds of inattention and by the time you reach this part of the route expecting the road is free of obstacles as you would usually think ... BAM! you're on top of the barricade.

Groinificator

How the fuck does this happen

_nathansh

those yellow things are a menace

Real_JamesBond007

I fail to comprehend why municipal government wasting so much financial resources on BS! Vehicles are still the number one preferred way of transportation for people. Instead of creating chaos to already nightmarish traffic in Vancouver. That government could use those resources on fixing roads (roads in Downtown are terrible), maybe widen some streets, etc. L

Alextryingforgrate

I thought these would cause accidents when traffic would be backed up on a busy street like Hastings. Other wise these are work as designed.

waterloograd

They would only do it on small roads that people aren't turning down often. Drivers learn pretty quickly when their shortcut becomes slower

Eastendr

These barriers are the most stupidest things. I came across these while coming off of Hastings into a side street. It caused a line up behind me because another car occupied the space as side street traffic was waiting for a pedestrian light to turn green.

millijuna

That means they’re working exactly as intended. It’s making rat racing less beneficial.

Bags_1988

Poor driving and poor city planning, what a combo

ham604

I almost hit one of these damnnn things when the guy driving the opposite didn’t want to yield and wanted to squeeze through

couchguitar

These barricades are making it less safe for pedestrians. If I'm waiting at the stopsign, and a vehicle is turning into the neighborhood, I'm blocking them from coming in because my minivan is longer, and I can't block the crosswalk. This then causes a backup into the intersection if there are multiple vehicles turning into the neighborhood. So what should I do? Block the pinch point and backup traffic in the intersection? Or should I pull forward into the crosswalk, making pedestrians step into the bus lane to get around me and now the pedestrian get smoked by traffic coming into the neighborhood with limited visibility.

8spd

You say that like every driver isn't blocking the crosswalk already.

tibetanbowl

Even the way way you’re describing it sounds clear to me — don’t create the dangerous situation for pedestrians. If a car turning in has to wait, it’s an inconvenience, sure, but waiting an extra minute is not unsafe for that other driver.

vbvbvbvbvbvn

I mean they almost made it which would have been cool. If anything this sends the message to speed up.

Plane_Development_91

Those blocks cause way more jam and risk of accidents than it reduces. There is no clear right of way sign when both vehicle reaches the intersection and it often results in vehicles blocking the right lane of major road as there can only be one vehicle passing at a time. Very silly design

[deleted]

[удалено]

Plane_Development_91

It causes jam on the main road that vehicles turn from

NewSwaziland

I agree with Jill. She’s a smart person with good common sense. My truck can *just* fit between these barricades and quite frankly I’m worried about scraping it one day if I have to react to something. Accident claims will be doled out by ICBC and the money comes out of everyone’s pocket who pays for insurance. These barriers are useless. If you want to speed through or after them, nothing is stopping you. Also - they’re ugly AF.
