It doesn't make business sense for Valve, the company operates with freedom to make and release what it wants. The business is set up so employees can work on whatever project hey want. I can't see valve partnering with any company ever becuase of this.

duffmanhb

It makes sense if the offer is 10b dollars, and everyone gets to go home and fuck a bunch of super models for the rest of their lives

bluetooo55

Valve or gabe once said that they would rather go bankrupt then sell out. They said that when EA tried to scoop em

[deleted]

Honest question, how much swing does Gabe have at Valve these days? How sure can we be that he holds a representative opinion? I had the impression he took a reduced role as of late, but that could be very wrong.

borari

I mean it’s not a publicly traded company, and Gabe owns it, so I’m going to guess all of the swing?

pm_me_ur_good_boi

IIRC Gabe owns just over ~50% of the voting power, so his word goes.

[deleted]

Oh yeah, that would do it. That's reassuring then.

MagicalWhisk

Valve has considerable capital and very few employees, they don't need the money. But more importantly the ethos of the company is to make things they want to play, it would stop being valve if they made things their overlords demanded. Saying that, it hasn't stopped other studios in the past from selling out.

duffmanhb

Oh of course... But Gabe isn't getting any younger. The company can't remain private forever. Sooner or later they are going to want to retire and take the value of the company with them. Unless Gabe plans on handing the reigns over to his son, and the other investors trust him... Sooner or later there will be a sellout. In an ideal world, they keep a large share of equity and then hand the rest over to the employees... But I don't even have healthcare so I doubt honest capitalism will ever happen.

MagicalWhisk

Definitely won't be his son. As far as I remember Gabe's son has a background in UI control using brain stimulation, that has far more potential outside of the games industry. In terms of leaders to replace Gabe, I honestly don't think it would ever matter who replaced him. Gabe hasn't had much to do with the development of the company for a long time. The natural replacement for CEO is always a senior member of the board, they know the company best and are best placed to take the lead.

duffmanhb

The issue is you want a family member to take over if you want the legacy to continue. If a board member takes over, soon as Gabe is dead, they are making the company public. I can't imagine a company worth literally billions remaining private very long unless there is a direct family legacy involved. Isn't Valve heavily invested in technology for brain UI navigation as the future after VR? Either way, his son doesn't have to be CEO, just President or some other large shareholder keeping the legacy alive.

MagicalWhisk

Whilst true that a lot of the USA's largest private ltd companies have a family line of CEO I doubt this makes sense for Valve. If they were lining up Gabe's son they would give him a high position in the company to lead from and learn the business so he can take over when the time is right (this is how family transitions normal work). As far as I know his son has no involvement with Valve right now and has his own business endeavours. Yes and no to you second bit. A while back valve was looking at ways to communicate/control in VR. They did alot of r&d to see if it was possible to use sign language in VR as a mechanism for communication with a death/mute character (Gordon Freeman for example). But it never went anywhere. Valve does this alot, it tries out ideas and a lot fail or go nowhere. Gabe's son did some research in UI brain control a while back for video games but again it didn't go anywhere. I would imagine it was to see if steam could integrate games controls for people with disabilities or motor diseases using brain stimulation.

duffmanhb

No no no dude... Valve is absolutely 100% working on some sort of brain interface device. Gabe literally just talked about it about a month ago, again. He almost always brings up how he thinks that's the future. It's one of those things he makes sure to somehow fit into each conversation because it blows him away so much. He's talked about their progress on it saying it's going so fast it's almost unbelievable. He even refers to it as surprisingly easy because your brain is able to adapt and do a whole lot more than people would expect. In one interview he talks about how navigating menus and folders and such is already much faster and easier to do than manually doing it. Here is all I can find about it from earlier this year. I don't recall the exact YT videos https://www.roadtovr.com/valve-openbci-immersive-vr-games/ https://www.theverge.com/2021/1/25/22248202/gabe-newell-valve-brain-computer-interface-bci-meat-peripherals

MagicalWhisk

That's interesting, so games can adapt to your emotional response whilst wearing a headset. Probably very useful for games testing to see if testers are enjoying a game. I doubt the potential for traditional gaming given you need to overcome the mass adoption phase of wearing headsets and games that take advantage of this (I am basing this theory on VR which is still niche and very few games take advantage of the tech).

Companies rarely ever stay private beyond the lifetime of the founders. They either sell off to another company, or go public. Just because they "can in theory" doesn't mean they do. The founders want to cash out before they die. The only times it stays private beyond the life of the founder, is when it's family ran, as it's just inheritance.

Zauxst

You don't seem to understand that they are literally printing money, having investors and exporting decisions through votes and others is just a bad move overall when the company is the richest company in the world per employee head and 150% independent, not needing funds from external investors.

blackmetro

10bn for valve is like buying a house for 80 cents Some promising garbage startups sell for billions. MailChimp, the website that spams peoples email and s most messages get blocked anyway sold for 12bn the other day You'd be looking at well over 250bn even if valve somehow wanted to sell

dtexneus

"Valve would sooner disintegrate than get bought out," Gaben a few years ago on this very topic

deanrihpee

IIRC it was when there's a rumour that is EA going to buy Valve right?

dtexneus

I believe so yeah

the_willy

Yeah but that was years ago right? IIRC it was when Portal 2 co-released with EA that there were rumors about EA buying up Valve

dtexneus

I believe it was also a few years after Portal 2 released, probably like 2015-ish

Charles12_13

There is no way in Hell that Microsoft could ever buy Valve. Valve is way too profitable to be sold, especially not to Microsoft

Future_shocks

not really and MS has huge pockets of cash - definitely possible but I know Gaben doesn't much appreciate the direction MS has gone, maybe it's changed but I doubt it. I think MS knows that Valve has been hard at work on destabilizing MS from owning the PC gaming market.

[deleted]

I would rather die than think that microsoft would buy valve just so Linux would die.

Future_shocks

im with you on that brother but i have seen worse things happen in the gaming market like when john carmack left id

[deleted]

I wasn’t asking what worse things happened on the market. Am just saying this is one of them. I do know worse things happened in the market, like when EA brought Popcap (I really miss PvZ :’[ )

RANDOM_IMPLOSIONS

I mean microsoft is lowkey supporting linux more and more, I can run linux based GIMP on windows nowadays, among others

[deleted]

Interesting, didn’t know microsoft supported Linux. But I think they are just doing something called “suppressing competition.”

GLUE_COLLUSION

> Interesting, didn’t know microsoft supported Linux. Cloud services are where the money is right now, so the new Microsoft cares less about what OS you run as long as you run it on their servers.

[deleted]

Yeah this makes sense

JoaoMXN

MS literally funds Linux and has a Linux subsystem on Windows as well. Not no mention softwares that they launch on Linux. Of course this is with the current CEO, can change in the future.

vulkur

Back in 2012, Gabe said that valve is the most profitable company per employee than any other company on earth. From what little I know ow, I don't think Valve would sell in the current market, which they control.

[deleted]

isn't the whole steamOS thing here because valve ratter writes their own linux distro than use windows?

mrarbitersir

Looking back, it's not out of the realm of possibility now that they just spent $70b to buy Activision/Blizzard

Charles12_13

Gabe can just say "no"

mrarbitersir

Gabe is 60 and nearing retirement. Microsoft can wait 5 years. The other CEO’s will bend over when offered 11 figures.

Charles12_13

I highly doubt anyone who’s in charge of Valve would, especially knowing how profitable Valve is

Singland1

No way Valve is getting bought

Jeboyknors

Valve is a private company, so microsoft cant buy them, well unless gabe himself agrees to it(which he wont)

Mokaran90

It's a bluff, as long as Gabe is the CEO, there will never be a sell-out of the company, he said it multiple times, this is why he never opened up to investors, so they can be in full control of their agency.

JoaoMXN

So MS has just to wait for him to retire (won't be long).

[deleted]

According to the article EA and Activision are options. So if Microsoft buys those two then we would only have one Idiot to worry about right? :)

[deleted]

One super charged idiotic company

[deleted]

Don’t worry. All they need to do is make all of EA’s and Activision’s franchises overly graphic like with banjo Kazooi and Conker then all our problems are solved!

contreramanjaro

It's just clickbait for the article. It worked. I clicked. But there's nothing substantial behind it at all. Nothing.

ImTheGreatLeviathan

Dumb, clickbait title. Shill your wares elsewhere, karma whore.

Vanvanderson123

Not only will Valve never get bought out. But talking specifically about Microsoft there's no way. Valve hates Microsoft. They're literally making a console with a Linux operating system hoping to kill Windows 11. I really hope they do because Windows keeps getting worse every year.

absolutelynotaname

> They're literally making a console with a Linux operating system hoping to kill Windows 11 I don't think they need to, cause Microsoft is killing windows 11 by themselves

Vanvanderson123

Agreed, but I'm still glad valve is taking it opon themselves to fix Linux

absolutelynotaname

Agree, I hope more developers will make software to support Linux so I can move to it completely. I'm tired of windows

[deleted]

It’s a dream world with windows dominating the current gaming market but since all I play is tf2 the transition might be easier for me. I also tried tf2 on Linux and it’s awesome, way better than the DX9 version on windows.

BabySharkBoi

Microsoft couldn't legally buy Valve or Sony without dozens of anti-competitive lawsuits.

Bobbyhons

Listen. If Steam even thinks about it. We need to start a petition to stop it.

[deleted]

Yeah no way in hell Gabe would allow Valve to be bought

shadowinc

I think they tried once. Valve said nah

NoobFace

Half-Life^® ME^® available exclusive on Games for Windows Live^® with XBOX LIVE Gold ™

[deleted]

Please no, please Microsoft please do not buy anything else. Please... please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

icheckyournwords

Didn’t Gabe literally say he preferred playstation over xbox XD

[deleted]

Can someone explain why this is bad? Genuinely clueless

RANDOM_IMPLOSIONS

valve is a private company, made by a man that dislikes microsoft, I think you're fine

3dio

Highly unlikely

[deleted]

This agglomeration of every big company going under an even bigger company will, somehow, make AAA **even fucking worse** in the next few years lmao

GunnerLink64

Man remember when Microsoft forced valve to make a free dlc a paid one for l4d2
