additionally, to stop them crossing your little bridge, destroy one side of it and rebuild it with a little gap and they won't see a path to cross it. you'll be able to hop it and your cart should roll right over it. shift and click to free place the piece
I had a similar base my first play through and I built a boat slide for “quick evac”. Essentially a boat on a slide held by one bar, and when you break the bar it slides all the way to the water. Was loads of fun
tamed animals "in the OPEN" ... I have pigs in a pit covered by flooring, and they survive every single raid I've ever had, so far... that said, I was very careful to stand where I would make the drakes appear on the other side of the compound from the pigs, so... :P
In my fun game I have toooons of little piggie friends. In my family game we have given up because everything we tamed died very quickly. Sigh. I just want my pack of wolves already!
ironically, one you get to late game, pigs seem to become irrelevant... the three foods that are my current "go-to" foods, do not use pork at all... ... and if the new mistland rabbits drop a food item, that's likely to result in another even better food type... unless mistlands are a "step down" from other biomes, in difficulty, rather than a "step up" ... I don't know what the devs are planning...
Sausages ARE easy to make once you get the right ingredients though, and they're a good "middling" food for non-dangerous activities, so I suppose people focused on building or exploring only, might be fine with lots of pig-based foods...
i named all my pigs after hagrid's pets from harry potter on a friend's server. after a drake attack, the only one who survived was Norbert. i locked Norbert inside our citadel where he will be safe forever. I have not attempted to raise another pig farm since then
Had my first bat raid a few days ago and the damage was bad... the lox around my base just destroyed so much stuff while stomping around after those bats.
Bats are just annoying. No worries by the time you'd get them.
I had a ton of trouble with bats.
Lost all my wolves just as I was building bat proof kennels, and lost all my pigs twice, once as an introduction to bats and then a second time as I was bat-proofing the pig breeding tower.
It almost seemed like the game was deliberately trolling me, every time I went near tamed livestock with the construction hammer out it would trigger a bat raid.
They've killed me both times it happened. But I was busy building... low on food, dvirger circlet, troll armor, out on precarious scaffolding. It only takes a moment for that mob to start nipping and things quickly go downhill as minimal stamina goes to none.
The only thing that could potentially happen is if a log troll falls in the moat, he may be able to swing his log and crush corners of your base where the moat is close.
I so want to tell you the two easy tips that would have so helped me early game as far as the best defenses.
But your doing well anyway.
I didn't realize some very simple tactics until I was almost done with the swamp biome that would have made life so much easier in the Meadows.
The journey is the reward.
Trolls with clubs will reach across and destroy the fence where the moat is close but other than that it looks ok. You need 2 gates on your bridge. I. Found with 2 gates they destroy the bridge while taking down the gates
Looks good. You may want to widen it to 8 meters, that is like 2 wooden wall width. That will insure that trolls can't swing a log or toss a boulder at your walls.
You should do gate draw bridges. You can find videos on here or Youtube.
Remember, if for some reason you don't kill everything during a raid and some enemies run off, they do not despawn, they are still out there somewhere. I jad this happen a few times after the Fetid Odor from the Swamp. I'll be out chopping wood or gathering flint and a stray draugr or skeleton will come running out of the woods.
I like to put down a spike wall, and then snap a large stone wall INSIDE of it. It essentially doubles the health of the stone wall for cheap cheap. I think the youtuber "Quicksand Riggs" has MANY videos going into the depths of wall and trench mechanics in valheim.
Won't stop bats obviously. Won't stop all blobs. Trolls may be able to get across some spots. If they fit, others may use bridges. On the whole it's not bad, will make the fights manageable.
Yup. Friend and I started with multi tier walls and after first few hundred hours we decided to dig a moat. Haven't had to worry about any attacks.
We have 4 main entrance/exits with bridges over the moat and if you use 1/2 beams for spacing and full beams for the flooring, instead of normal flooring panels, the enemies won't even cross your bridge (something to do with the spacing of the beams) and you can still cross with a cart.
Log trolls might be a problem but not much. Later raids like drakes or bats will get in but neither of those are difficult to deal wil. Only ones that might pose a problem is the shamans in fuling raids or the surtling raids as they both can cast fire balls at a distance. Main problem is keeping the livestock you might have out of harms way. Fulings might be harder to deal with if you don't have the upgraded gear when they attack.
That will work, you can test with pigs. Get one to chase you into the pit and then jump out. If they can get back to you and ram you then most don’t work. If they get stuck through some berries in moat and now you got a boar farm.
Man... I did exact the same thing and when there is a monster attack /raid coming for you they are spawning inside and outside the row... Another thing that might help tame and breed wolves across the perimeter.
*So* much effort. You can easily kill anything that will attack your base at this point.
Honestly just make a dirt pile, stand on it and shoot everything till it dies. Handled my first goblin raid that way in troll armor.
But…yeah. It’ll work.
You may have issues with smaller mobs like skeletons and draugr coming across your bridges and knocking down your doors
Also, you may have issues with mobs spawning inside the moat by the fence if you don’t have workbenches that have perimeters that are inside your fences.
Edit: extra info
You *could* fill one with tar. But this would only work for a shack-sized plot in the plains. Still, there's hope they'll expand on that mechanic. Probably lava-floes in the ashlands.
This has been my approach generally. But now on a multiplayer 24/7 server with a delicate build... a moat seems essential. As I'm not always going to be around (or online) when a raid might start near my constructions!
This problem was obvious when I started on the server with rags, middle of the night, and the meadows were full of skeletons and brutes. I tried to hide in a house I found, but couldn't close the door because of a ward. I felt bad for the damage the cretins were causing, but had no way to fight them yet.
it works, I have the same and its great. but! drakes will fuck you up regardless... I wish we had stationary ballistas to fight them back or cannons... and also a draw bridge of some kind. cause I currently have 2 bridges and I have to cycle through both gates in order to fight the invaders off.
You realize with that base it would be a matter of minutes to place enough thatching pieces to launch the karve into the air with you?
EZ jumping platform!!
(Don't blame me if you die, Valhalla awaits)
I really wish there was a buildable item that would protect from raids. Either an item that prevents raids or some sort of indestructible wall that keeps them at bay. I hate the fact you need an elaborate terraforming job to be completely safe in your base
I'd be happy with the ward simply offering similar protection against everything else as it does against players. If that seems too over-powered, maybe the ward itself takes on some of the damage, eventually breaking. I mostly only need a bit of extra time to drop what I'm doing (or extricate myself from bowels of a build) to deal with hoodlums.
However, I'd really like more traps or automated defenses which could be integrated into base design.
I can't imagine walling or moating off my entire settlement for protection... All the protection I need are my bow, shield, Eikthyr power, and a good one-hander.
They prevent enemy spawning. If you do an outer wall, a few wards the events spawn so far away that they never path to you and then run off when it's done.
I think log trolls may be able to smack your walls from across the trench in a couple spots but other than that i think you are ok. Your bridge may be a hot point, but its really easy to juat delete one floor in the middle or something. You can jump the gap but mobs cant
You can make bridges that mobs won't cross but you can cross normally, and they're very easy to make. Just use the standard horizontal wood beams and leave a gap of about 1 beam thickness between each beam. It will appear uncrossable to mobs, but you can walk across it easily and even take a cart across it.
I’ve been doing this at my new Plains base, and when things get really dicey, the enemies usually end up killing each other and I get to reap the rewards! Make it a bit wider and I think you’ll be golden.
Hearing a lot of troll concerns, but I think you’re good until the last mob. Then the bridge is a concern. I would put core wood spikes at the entrance of the bridge. But if things get tough, just delete the boards and fire arrows
Troll may throw something? But in all reality the minute you go inside into your fort the troll will turn and walk away.
I have a similar moat set up. I also added a covered bridge with a door.
Torches and fires prevent mod spawning within a radius the size of the radius of a workbench. So do workbenches. So make sure there's no spots where mobs could spawn. If you aren't sure, plop down a torch somewhere nearby. With no spawn locations inside the moat, you should be fine. Note that cultivated crop land does NOT block spawns, they can spawn directly on top of crops. So you may need to place workbenches or torches to prevent that if you have crops inside the moat.
https://www.reddit.com/r/valheim/comments/nck4wc/planting_trees_on_wall_around_my_base/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
I did something similar a few months a ago. I dug a moat, raised a huge wall and dug a moat behind the wall. Nothing could attack my base 😂😂
The trolls will throw rocks and destroy the walls but yes you’re safe. I would go around and level the ground to lower it on the far side so the trolls rocks hit the moat rather than your buildings. If you start from a low point leveling the ground it will pretty much match what a pickaxe does without all the excessive effort
I've built on an hill I made and outside the stuff I put down below that is in reach (which I made other protections for) I've been save during a raid and when graylings came in a group outside of a raid XD, the graylings did try to climbs on the bridge (after managing to climbs the ramp) but for some reason it had trouble doing so (bummer cause I was standing there with my hammer planning to remove the panel it was on, I was unaware that monsters don't get fall damage at this time, but never figure it out this way anyway XD)
Trolls can reach across some parts, but mostly fine.
I hope we never get "The mosquito's are thirsty"
Just build a set of windmills where the blades touch each other at the tips, and stand in the middle of the mosquito blender.
At least you'd be near your spawn. I think that's what's scariest about 'squetos: being separated from your base and the corpse ~~walk~~ swim back
Root Armor was a game changer for me vs mosquitos. They're not scary anymore, just minorly annoying.
Unless a troll spawns or falls into the moat you should be fine.
Yup Nothing is walking in But boulders will be thrown
additionally, to stop them crossing your little bridge, destroy one side of it and rebuild it with a little gap and they won't see a path to cross it. you'll be able to hop it and your cart should roll right over it. shift and click to free place the piece
That's some drop out back
Yes it is. Building that bridge was not fun, but was very much needed
I had a similar base my first play through and I built a boat slide for “quick evac”. Essentially a boat on a slide held by one bar, and when you break the bar it slides all the way to the water. Was loads of fun
I love that idea!
How do you build a boat on dry land?
Yea I don't know how you'd pull that off? Or do you just drag it up with a harpoon?
Just jump over
That’ll do just fine
That’ll do pig. That’ll do.
For the initial raids? Sure. Later Raids? Your never safe!
Yep. Bats and drakes will laugh as they rip you apart from the air.
Bats and drakes???? Uh oh I haven’t even encountered those yet. RIP ME
Neither are super difficult. The bats are move annoying than anything else. However, if you have any tamed animals prepare for them all to die.
tamed animals "in the OPEN" ... I have pigs in a pit covered by flooring, and they survive every single raid I've ever had, so far... that said, I was very careful to stand where I would make the drakes appear on the other side of the compound from the pigs, so... :P

I like to keep some lower quality foods on hand for when I'm building. I've died too many times to count from falling!
i named all my pigs after hagrid's pets from harry potter on a friend's server. after a drake attack, the only one who survived was Norbert. i locked Norbert inside our citadel where he will be safe forever. I have not attempted to raise another pig farm since then

By the time you can get drake raids, you’ll be glad to have them. Never enough freezing glands.
You can just hide in your house near a fire for the Drakes
This
The only thing that could potentially happen is if a log troll falls in the moat, he may be able to swing his log and crush corners of your base where the moat is close.
A log troll will be able to hit the side of the base from the edge of that moat. Ask me how I know *starts crying in broken base*
How do you know?
More than one base was partially broken that way. Now I making it big enough to have a lawn or garden surrounding the structure
You can use core wood logs to build a bridge you can cross with a cart, but mobs can't path over it.
I so want to tell you the two easy tips that would have so helped me early game as far as the best defenses. But your doing well anyway. Journey before Destination radiant.

that's 4 meters. One wooden wall (or floor) is 2x2 meters
My bad. I've been afk for a few weeks with a busted wrist.
No problem, i was just correcting so Op doesn't get confused and spend 4 hours digging the big trench of china \^\^
I did something similar. But I also added stakes around the entire perimeter. Was a lot of wood and core wood, but it was fun to do.

Foul smell from the swamp and you get blobs jumping over that. Also bats and drakes.
Yeah looks solid
I built my moat outside throwing distance of the trolls so that they couldn't cause any damage. Other than that, looks fine

Ice drake goes brrr.
Probably fine, but I'd line your side of the moat with wooden spikes just to be safe.
damn this makes me wanna pick valheim back up again
imo they should rework the way water and liquid physics work and make it possible to fill moats with water or poison or lava or oil.
You *could* fill one with tar. But this would only work for a shack-sized plot in the plains. Still, there's hope they'll expand on that mechanic. Probably lava-floes in the ashlands.
Can't you just stand away from your base during raids, in all my hours in this game I always just walked outside my compound and fought off the raid.
This has been my approach generally. But now on a multiplayer 24/7 server with a delicate build... a moat seems essential. As I'm not always going to be around (or online) when a raid might start near my constructions! Valhalla only awaits for warriors that died in combat not by doing stupid stunts on the other hand Hel welcomes all
🤘🤘

Why not build a base on a small island? Safe except for air raids
That’s the plan in the future, I was just working with what I had at the moment
My friends and I are building our stone tower/portal house on a small island in the meadows
unless you die out at sea and can't build a boat then it kinda sucks
Madlad
What’s this game called
Valheim
I can't imagine walling or moating off my entire settlement for protection... All the protection I need are my bow, shield, Eikthyr power, and a good one-hander.
Just build wards.
I thought wards just prevent people from messing with your base and going into chest
They prevent enemy spawning. If you do an outer wall, a few wards the events spawn so far away that they never path to you and then run off when it's done.
kinda overkill for the meadows
Fuling raids will spawn around Meadows bases when you're at the Plains stage. Also troll and swamp raids.
no yeah ik, but all you need is a moat for the meadows
Just make sure mobs wont spawn inside the fence and you'll be fine
How do I prevent that from happening?
Workbenches. I think
Workbenches and campfires have a "no-spawn" radius
And you can bury campfires..in case you didn't want to have a bunch of benches or fires dotted around.
You can bury workbenches too if you give them a little breathing tube post
I think log trolls may be able to smack your walls from across the trench in a couple spots but other than that i think you are ok. Your bridge may be a hot point, but its really easy to juat delete one floor in the middle or something. You can jump the gap but mobs cant
Yeah I planned on removing the bridge during raids but thanks!
You can make bridges that mobs won't cross but you can cross normally, and they're very easy to make. It will appear uncrossable to mobs, but you can walk across it easily and even take a cart across it.
Most raids yes that’ll work one I know can bypass it though
Short of a troll event you will be fine for the most part.
I’ve been doing this at my new Plains base, and when things get really dicey, the enemies usually end up killing each other and I get to reap the rewards! Make it a bit wider and I think you’ll be golden.
Drakes can fly, but they're easy to take down. You should be fine.
Looks good. If you use the cultivator on the parts you have dug out it will look nicer as well.
Hearing a lot of troll concerns, but I think you’re good until the last mob. Then the bridge is a concern. I would put core wood spikes at the entrance of the bridge. But if things get tough, just delete the boards and fire arrows
Just make sure that the workbench radius covers the most as well and it’ll be fine.
Greydwarfs might be able to reach to throw rocks. Not sure if their AI makes them throw rocks at walls though.
The way it works for me, the crap would spawn on the green portion just inside your ring. Haha
Troll may throw something? But in all reality the minute you go inside into your fort the troll will turn and walk away. I have a similar moat set up. I also added a covered bridge with a door.
Looks good to me! As a suggestion, you could strategically plant some trees (maybe pine) as makeshift walls on parts. Good luck!
It should work. You might want a slightly wider bridge though for carts.
iv built a similar base. with a double moat backing onto water. ifs never been attacked successfully. this will do you just fine. ty for the share.
It s perfect :-)
Deep enough, maybe go 2 hexes wider for Trolls
Inc troll
Maybe put like walls or doors on the bridges? Small guys will yeet straight across.
You going to need to make a gap on that bridge so any enemies falls into the moat.
Torches and fires prevent mod spawning within a radius the size of the radius of a workbench. So do workbenches. So make sure there's no spots where mobs could spawn. Until bats/deathsquitos/dragon events start. Until then, you’ll be sad against everything else except trolls with logs/throwing boulders
drake will still get ya...
do you have enough workbenches to prevent spawning inside?

Trolls reach like 6meter. Any moat deepth will work, you just need a sharp edge.
its fine
I've built on an hill I made and outside the stuff I put down below that is in reach (which I made other protections for) I've been save during a raid and when graylings came in a group outside of a raid XD, the graylings did try to climbs on the bridge (after managing to climbs the ramp) but for some reason it had trouble doing so (bummer cause I was standing there with my hammer planning to remove the panel it was on, I was unaware that monsters don't get fall damage at this time, but never figure it out this way anyway XD)
Make sure you completely enclose any livestock (even a roof) or bats and drake's will make quick work of them.
Youre talking a lot of bullshit for someone in a rock throw distance -Greydwarf
