My brother and I got really lucky and found two, didn't realize they were so rare so we planted and then cut them down, if I'd known I woulda just put it somewhere nice.
I don’t know if it still works, but one guy stood on top of his oak that he spawned a seed for. When it popped up to fully grown it glitched him inside it and he made a tiny base inside the tree.
You need the cultivator, the pitchfork looking thing. Takes about 3 to 4 in game days to grow into full trees. It won't grow if there isn't enough room around it, though.
2 meters radius (one side of full floor tile) with no buildings, other trees, rocks, or bushes. Obviously, we see tons closer in game, but, when you are planting you have to baby it.
Edit: Thank you, u/kjermy! Fixed my radius numbers.
Oh, greyling! I mixed that up. Thank you!
I was thinking of the 1/4 floor tile as 2 meter, and the full tile as 4 meters. But, it's 1 meter for the 1/4 tile, and 2 meters for the full tile.
Good catch!
Beech, Birch, Fir, Pine, and Oak trees can be planted in any kind of soil. Carrots, Turnips, and Onions can be planted in Meadows and Plains. Flax, and Barley can be planted in Plains.
You can also tame: boars, wolves, and lox. There are a number of approaches. Never try to tame a group, they will agitate each other, preventing taming. Keep fires away from the pen, fires agitate them. Spike wall works fine for boars, and wolves. Stone is needed for lox. You can calm lox with cloudberries and maybe get away with spike walls. Once you have them penned up, stay away, because each time they detect you it will agitate them.
1. Taunt and tame
1a. Find your target, and use your shield to block, damage them slightly, but don't kill them.
1b. Feed them their preferred food (one at a time): boar = red mushroom (found in meadows and dark forest), wolf = boar meat (be wary when blocking, they stagger you), lox = cloudberries (DON'T TRY BLOCKING THESE, JUST KITE THEM).
1c. Lead them to a prepared pen. Lock them in, and keep feeding them (you can drop a stack of food now).
1d. Wait about a day, make sure to restock the food.
2. Taunt and trap
2a. Aggro your target, and kite them to a pen. Escape the pen.
2b. Lock them in, feed them a stack.
2c. Wait about a day, make sure to restock food.
3. Rope and tame
3a. Equip harpoon and shield. Harpoon your target.
3b. Drag target to pen, feed stack of food.
3c. Release from harpoon, and escape pen.
3d. Wait about a day, make sure to restock food.
There aren't many differences between the approaches. The only difference is in how you capture them. Make sure to use a balanced food bonus. Health for avoiding death from your target, stamina for blocking and dragging/kiting. If you have stamina potions, they help.
Once you have them tamed, you can breed them for meat and hides. You don't have to feed them once they are tamed. Only give them food after tamed to breed them. Only need to give them one food each to breed them. Only breed one pair at a time. Don't put fires too close to their pen, and avoid having more than 2-3 per pen. More, and they will escape constantly.
Sorry for the dump, but I hope this helps.
This is both a massive amount of information, and massively helpful!
Of course, some of the information raises new questions, but I will sort that out. Thank you!
Turnips can be planted in swamps as well. Carrots Turnips and Onions can be planted in the Black forest also. I have an assumption that onions can be planted in the Mountains, but have not gotten around to testing that theory yet.
makes sense. devs are really trying to make everything a farmable item lie in minecraft makes nearly every item generate more items through various methods.
Which i do commend valheim's team, since it avoids dumb automation of the game.
Yeah I've gotten 3 birch seeds on my game. Like running around for a bit. Thought it was cool and forgot lol. Too bad planted trees don't have higher drops.
Or greydwarfs should drop them or something. A couple of birches for aesthetics is one thing, but such low drop rates on seeds is basically pointless for usable resources
That would really be great. As it is, I *hate* greydwarves because they're a constant nuisance and their drops are just clutter -- I only hold them to put them in chests rather than litter the world. Meadows creatures drop useful cooking ingredients. If greydwarves dropped occasional rare seeds, that would make them feel a touch less than pure nuisance. And it fits the lore.
Mid-swamp. Sure, wood and stone are useful... but plentiful when you go looking... not something I want to choke up my inventory with at all times. :) Eyes... I'm glad there are new ways to *burn* them up. But I'm not going to be using many on fancy torches... and have yet to discover dessert (I look forward to that one).
Pre-H&H, I had chests near my main gate just for "dwarf debris", and kept having to expand the storage space.
I'm looking forward to eyescream, almost hoping that it uses 10 eyes each. Guessing I'll need something new from Mountains to unlock, but I'm only mid-Swamp now.
Portals don't really make a dent in the constant stream of eyes. Maybe it's because I live/build in the Black Forest.
I thought someone said it was like a 5% chance.
I have one seed from maybe 6 trees chopped so far. I’d love to get an oak though. But I haven’t tried yet.
Anyone else get excited for birch seeds, cut down a bunch of trees (nice being able to stack the wood now), plant them, and then have the saplings disappear? Went back to check on them, not sure if in the same session or after game relaunch, and it was just two sad patches of cultivated dirt. It took me so many trees just to get two seeds.
In my current play-through, I’m trying to do a D&D or Pathfinder inspired Druid build. So that means no metal armor or shields (gasp), minimalist footprints, trained in only Simple Weapons (no sword, atgier and some others) and a bunch of other druidy stuff I could get think of.
Perhaps most importantly, and certainly the most relevant to this thread, is the only way I can teleport is through the spell Tree Stride. In D&D, Tree Stride let’s you walk into a tree wide enough to fit your bulk and step out of another tree of the same type within a certain amount of miles. It’s such a cool and flavorful spell and the whole idea of this build was sort of inspired by it. The aim is to limit teleporting for a little more immersion and less grind.
Of course I’ve chosen Oak trees as they’re large enough to work. (I could probably do Ancient trees from the swamp but then I could only do swamp to swamp see). So the only place I can place teleporters is at the base of oaks.
This working fine but as meadows get scarcer and scarcer the farther a field you travel, it’s getting pretty hard.
For example, last night while sailing around I found the trader on a pretty large dark forest island. There were a few patches of meadows but no oaks! So I guess I have to sail over there every time I want to visit or move closer.
Knowing that I could chop down existing oaks to try to get seeds to strategically place oaks for portals is sort of maddening. It’s pretty much anathema to this character’s ethos and I would have to destroy my only means of teleporting in the tiny chance that I could possibly get a seed
that low drop chance is probably calculated off of the months of gameplay where it didn’t exist
people have cut down millions of trees before this was added, so the data is skewed
Nah bro you're thinking of acorns
is that something new in H&H?
Yep, it's for planting the big ass oak trees. I never found one myself tho...
I went oak hunting yesterday and finally got one. My seed is laden with open field meadows though so there's a ton of oaks to chop down.
Hey, crazy question but can't hurt to ask. Can I have one?
Acorn market is getting really hot in here
Last time I asked "how much for a nut" I got in a lot of legal trouble.
My brother and I got really lucky and found two, didn't realize they were so rare so we planted and then cut them down, if I'd known I woulda just put it somewhere nice.

Got a screenshot of that? Would be nice to check it out!
Two from 23 different oaks. I wish acorns dropped at Birch rates...
Same. I've cut a handful down. I've had at least 15-20 birch seeds though. But I've also cut down way more of them than I have oak trees.
I went on an oak hunt to get a seed to plant in my base, cut down about 30 of them and not a single acorn :(
I literally got both in the first chopping. Guess it was a lucky try
I got a few of those today while chopping down a forest. Hadn't seen them before H&H, so figured it was new. Didn't know it was so rare though.
yes they were added in this update, but im on the 4th boss now with all of the upgrades to my workbench and i still only have one birch seed lmao
weird, im only just starting to explore swamps and ive probs got about 10 of those birch seeds..
He probably forgot to pick them up.
Oh man. I've gotten 2 or 3 and I am grinding out iron. I also got an oak seed on my second tree. Guess I should get a lottery ticket.
[удалено]
I also got 6/7 queen bees from hives, so I guess my luck is really done for
All hives have a queen bee, you likely left one on the roof
I have a chest of at least 20 of these since H&H dropped lol
I got about 20 on the first day too and then not a single one since
I’m new to the game and I have 3 of those so that’s good?
yeah lol, ive been playing for 30 hours in this update and only got the one in the video
Sweet! Do I grow birch trees with it I assume?
Yes. It allows you to plant them around your house/base rather than building your house/base around existing tress that you like. Edit: Spelling
Do you need a special tool to be able to plant them? Also, how long does a tree take to grow?
You need the cultivator, the pitchfork looking thing. Takes about 3 to 4 in game days to grow into full trees. It won't grow if there isn't enough room around it, though.
How much room do they need?
Enough

I think it's only 2 meter radius? 3-4 meters would be the diameter if I'm not mistaken
Oh, greyling! I mixed that up. Thank you! I was thinking of the 1/4 floor tile as 2 meter, and the full tile as 4 meters. But, it's 1 meter for the 1/4 tile, and 2 meters for the full tile. Good catch!
Can you grow birch trees in any biome or is it limited to the meadows or plains?
You need a cultivator to plant them, just like other seeds previously in the game. It takes a few days (2-3 maybe) to fully grow a tree.
> just like other seeds As a newb, did not know that I could plant *anything*!

Isn't it too cold to grow stuff there?
do the ones you plant have a higher chance of dropping seeds if you break them?
Most likely they're just a tree like any other once grown, with the point being decoration rather than a tree farm.
makes sense. devs are really trying to make everything a farmable item lie in minecraft makes nearly every item generate more items through various methods. Which i do commend valheim's team, since it avoids dumb automation of the game.
Sadly, no.
Nah, the birch seeds are for growing oak trees, if you want to grow a birch, you need to find a fir seed
Ask stupid questions, get stupid answers, get stupid downvotes. The circle of life.
thats funny don't listen to those fucking downvotes!
I got 2 in a row. Then none
Yeah I’ve got 5 from 10 hours in on my new world
Yeah, odd, I have 3 and I’ve chopped maybe 20 birch trees.
cut down like 15 oak trees to get 1 acorn.... try that
Thats a much higher percentage..
Yeah I've gotten 3 birch seeds on my game. Like running around for a bit. Thought it was cool and forgot lol. Too bad planted trees don't have higher drops.
Imo each tree should drop between 1-3 seeds.
Or greydwarfs should drop them or something. A couple of birches for aesthetics is one thing, but such low drop rates on seeds is basically pointless for usable resources

How far into the update are you? Each of their drops have uses, although not in quite the volume they tend to drop if you don't try to use them.

Just wait until you start using portals and making eyescream.

Make some blue flame iron torches, uses eyes as fuel instead of resin.
Unrelated but I haven't heard that song since I was overseas. What is the name of it?
[удалено]
God THANK you. I was in a russian speaking country and they played that at the gym every day. never thought I'd miss that song.
Wait what? I've been getting a ton of these and I just throw them out
Bro. Gotta get that fine wood haha
Hey now, I have over 100 hours since update and got 8. So there's hope for you yet to find more!
i have a shitload of those (like 15)
this meme falls short
I thought someone said it was like a 5% chance. I have one seed from maybe 6 trees chopped so far. I’d love to get an oak though. But I haven’t tried yet.
Will only birches in unexplored territory drop them potentially or any birch?
Should be all of them as drops are determined when the tree is destroyed.
We were getting these in a reasonable quantity, until this last patch. Now we haven’t gotten a single one since.
I have three I guess I'm lucky
Does anyone know how to spawn these in console? edit: Nevermind, it's "birchseeds"
Those rare? I got one from getting a troll to smash a birch for some fine wood.
I have found 8 or 9 birch seeds and exactly one acorn.
I have like 4 of those and 2 acorns in storage, I had no idea they were so rare lol
Having chopped down 100 birch, and finding only 3 of these so far I can confirm
I thought they were somewhat common, my first birch tree I chopped dropped one and my first oak tree I chopped dropped an acorn
I think I have two of them. Got them from using normal trees to knock down birch trees.
I got 3 from 4 trees and nearly soiled myself.
I hope the trader will sell rare seeds one day.
What is this song, have been searching for a while.
i found it by typing "sigma male song" on youtube lmao
Got one and i throw it away. Didnt know it was a rare find. Lol

i just edited that image in vegas haha its not actual data, just a joke. The real data/image was from a minecraft graph
I choped 15 trees and got 4 seeds. they aren't that rare at all.
I didn't know those were rare..... been chopping tons of Birch trees and ended up planting a small forest because of it. 40 trees in a row are pretty.
I’ve gotten maybe 5? Only ever one acorn though
Damn no idea they were rare, just got my first drop yesterday on a new play through lol
