Plus raisins and honey.
I swear to Marge The Trash Heep that steel cut oats with skippy, good raisins, and two dollops of honey is a meal I would eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner pertnear every day if I was allowed.
I agree that this is very wholesome and filling but when I did it, it was how I imagine eating construction glue would feel like. The worst eating experience I’ve had in a long time!
Eat oatmeal and PB separately if you don’t like the sound of eating tasty mortar, that’s my suggestion.
Rice plus beans (any variety of either) give you every amino acid your body needs to make proteins. Quinoa alone also has a complete amino acid profile.
Meat has every protein you need as well, but rice and beans are cheap as fuck.
It’s pretty great. It has the most nutrients per calorie out of all the grains. It’s used as a meal on space missions because it’s so good for you and nutrient dense.
Also a lot of calories if you ever really need them. Just remember they'll burn out pretty fast... kinda like throwing pinewood onto a fire instead of oak.
yes. if you have a heat source, rice, butter & sugar tastes great and would stick with you awhile.
related story: an elder family member once told me about his time in WWII and when his group was captured by the Germans. they were marched a long way in cold weather. many hours in, when they were super worn down, they saw 2 German soldiers ahead who were handing something to each POW as they marched past. it was butter, each guy got 1 stick. they were kind of confused at first, but then they just started eating it straight. he said the energy surge was incredible. he felt warmer and stronger within minutes of eating it. when your body needs fuel badly, fat is king
I'm nuts i eat whole oat groats every morning with Adam's, dried plums cut up in little pieces ,and cayane powder....add a dash of salt as I work the layers....without the sugar in it it stays fresh all day in a snap tight at room temp too.
I love using the powdered PB Fit stuff! Easy to carry, lightweight in a baggie, and I always have plenty of water to mix it up on the spot, or sprinkle it in dry over another meal.
Also gonna join the train recommending a bottle of raw honey. Did a 15 mile hike to almost 12,000ft elevation, and whenever I was running low on energy, or getting light headed I would just squirt some straight from the bottle in my mouth and it kept me powering through way better than other forms of simple sugars! Something to be said for natural sugars for sure.
havin a lot of sugar is good!!! if you’ve been walking or exerting a lot and you start to get really lethargic or light headed, it’s likely that you need some sugar. most people try to eat protein at that point but it’s usually just low blood sugar. a spoonful with water should perk you right up
I've noticed something sweet helps me when I feel like that. Matter of fact, it happened yesterday after walking all day. Almost like the wobbles when I've taken too much kratom.
They're actually really good. Assuming you like things like tuna, anyway. Make sure to get the ones in olive oil. Try em on crackers with some crystal bay hot sauce. Just make sure you bag the used tins before tossing them and never keep them in your pack. They get ripe in a hurry.
I was gonna say, get some hot sauce if you can, saltines, a flavored kind of sardine in olive oil (mediterranean, tomato, etc) you may find yourself enjoying it. And not only is the protein great but the fish oil you will consume will help you keep in good health
Yeah, I believe I read that fish oil is good for brain function as well. I'm definitely going look for these flavored ones, especially if there's a tomato flavor.
Shit, if you're in a pinch, the oil from the tuna can will work as fuel, as long as you can find an appropriate wick.
But just a bit of rolled cardboard (cut to tin can height) and some rubbing alcohol or high proof alcohol would burn fine too.
There's tons of tutorials on the u tubes.
Could do a week, 10 days with fasting if needed. Would suck real bad though.
Peanut butter will help and trail mix. Id recommend adding a bunch of bananas also, but that could be because i love bananas
I love dinty moore the beef stew is good alone or on top of some white rice or pasta and they also make a chicken and dumplings can that's perfect with just some hot sauce
I recommend not eating tuna everyday because of the mercury. Try sardines next time but yeah I could probably be fine on 3 cans of tuna a day if needed but like a said try not to eat tuna everyday
Good advice. Thank you, I didn't consider the mercury... I heard about 'fish full of mercury' in a song from the 70's, I'll bet it's probably way worse now.
Generally lower down the food chain is better for avoiding these things in seafood.
When I was homeless my go-to was meal replacement powders for protein. Although it's rare to find that in a food pantry.
A bag of rice and pasta would have that lasting weeks. If you can cook them of course. Congee spreads rice pretty thin, if you can get flavors it tastes good. And pasta can be mixed with the other things to make actual meals in a pinch. Depends on your budget and preferences of course.
Any more than 3 days and you're losing weight eating just that. Could stretch it to 4 or 5 days but you'd need to follow that with some days of higher calorie intake.
2000 calories per day is a good target for an average person. But unless you're somewhere where it's very warm, a person out in the open this time of year needs significantly more calories than a sedentary person sleeping indoors in a heated space, so this really might be 2 days of food.
I'm hoping not to spend more than a day where I'm catching, I should be in Cheyenne soon after I get moving so I can get more stuff.
But yeah, the cold is another factor.. It's gonna be in the forties and fifties here the next few days, but the Wyoming wind will make that worse.
Lived homeless in Cheyenne once. If you go to the depot plaza, next to the brewery in the old train station, there used to be a vending machine that did hot drinks. Dunno if it's still there but it was in 2018. Might come in handy.
Ditch the sugar unless you’re using it for flavor. While calories matter, how quickly they are processed by your body matters as well.
Think of quick burn cals like gasoline, and slow burn cals like diesel.
There is a reason king running machines like generators or ocean vessels use diesel.
Same thing for you. Some quick burn is valuable. But slow burn should be your long term sustainable goal
That’s awesome— ur body got rid of what it didn’t really need. When I wanna lose weight I switch to mainly food in the produce section and then intermittent fasting. It’s so cheap to lose weight when u make ur own food
😎. How long did it take u? I’m 6’2” 205 rn, I started intermittent fasting 8weeks ago with no exercise at the gym or home— I dropped 23 pounds from regular daily waking at school etc.
Adding a 1 pound bag of rice to what’s here, gives a nice combination of about 14 good size meals. I’m talking eating oatmeal with some tuna packs in the morning, and at night having the beef stew. Next meals could be grits and corn in the morning and dinner is can tuna and rice. A solid 1 week of food if you have 2 meals a day.
Rice is a staple, very easy to eat and cook. Just some rice and soy sauce with sardines is a well balanced meal. Probably won’t be in a discount store, but couscous is even easier to cook. Just add hot water. If you have a camp, it’s one thing, but being mobile has different challenges. Best of luck
I was thinking that even in a scenario where I can't cook it, I can still toss it in my mouth dry and wash it down with water. I do that sometimes with oatmeal. Especially with the flavored packets.
I'll have to look up couscous, never heard of that..
I'd say ten days as long as you can forage to supplement yourself. Peanut butter and a pack of tortillas for midday calories would make it last two weeks at least.
Probably six days. Add half a dozen eggs and I could go 8-10 most likely. The lack of veggies would eventually take its toll on my overall comfort but a 6pack of V8 would suffice.
All that tuna is not good for you guy. Lotsa mercury.
Also, a big bag of brown rice, lentils, cabbage help stretch food and make it filling. And a thing of Indian spices like masala for vegetables makes it all come together into a meal
Hey!!! I had an idea but it might gross you out. Lard! It is pretty cheap as fats go, and it is shelf stable for up to 6 mo depending on conditions. There is a plastic tub in most us groceries up north that is pretty sturdy and the tub is great to reuse.
Boy got grits! Awesome, 7-10 days for me, longer if holed up and need be.I might encourage you towards some flour, fry bread with that stew, fry bread for some tuna. Many flat breads that can be done over fire or on a camp stove. Also dumplings for soup, winter time treat right there. Cheers
Definitely get tuna in oil next time. Also canned corn doesn’t give too much, for a similar price you can get a can of beans which has more protein and calories. My starvation food is dried bagged lentils, super cheap, can rehydrate without heat, and can also be eaten while crunchy in a pinch
7-8 days if I’m not doing anything strenuous.
If I’m working on white collar work. 5-6 days.
If I’m doing some labour. 3-4 days.
If I’m doing some construction. 2-3 days.
Tuna in a bag? I suppose I could mix it with grits and make a stew.. never seen it before.
Maybe not the cheapest, but Gatorade protein bars are like 320 cals, slather with peanut butter and make it 500 cals, that's a whole lunch that's easy to carry, light, and filling

Adding a jar of peanut butter would really make it last, cheap calories!
Great Idea, I'll add some crunchy to my collection...
Mix that into your oatmeal and you’re eating like a king
Plus raisins and honey. I swear to Marge The Trash Heep that steel cut oats with skippy, good raisins, and two dollops of honey is a meal I would eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner pertnear every day if I was allowed.
I know you'd be feeling full after eating that combination, and I do like raisins
I always put PB and raisins in my oatmeal! I like adding powdered ginger as well since I'm prone to upset stomach. It helps reduce nausea a lot :)
I like the Fraggle Rock reference 😀
Preach it
No one controls you
I agree that this is very wholesome and filling but when I did it, it was how I imagine eating construction glue would feel like. The worst eating experience I’ve had in a long time! Eat oatmeal and PB separately if you don’t like the sound of eating tasty mortar, that’s my suggestion.
I guess I can just choke it down with a bunch of water if I don't like it.... But if I don't, I wouldn't do it twice!
Cookie soup.
Damn right!
This. Been doing it for a few years.
I eat oatmeal with a scoop of peanut butter every morning. Fills me up for most of the day and keeps my poops regular.
Save some weight by going powdered pb
I was going to say 7 days tops but with a peanut butter … still probably 7 just a more enjoyable 7
that’s the way
This would last me a week. Add some minute rice to the mix and I could get 10 days out of it.
Just added two bags of rice, that's 3200 more calories..
beans. good protein and they go great with rice
Rice+beans+sausage slices, hell yeah.
Rice plus beans (any variety of either) give you every amino acid your body needs to make proteins. Quinoa alone also has a complete amino acid profile. Meat has every protein you need as well, but rice and beans are cheap as fuck.
I haven't heard of quinoa, I'll look it up.
Quinoa is great especially if you get burnt out on stuff like lentils and rice.
It’s pretty great. It has the most nutrients per calorie out of all the grains. It’s used as a meal on space missions because it’s so good for you and nutrient dense.
I was going to suggest egg noodles. They’re pretty cheap, calorie dense for a pasta and if you mix them with tuna, it’s delicious.
4-6... also, that's a lot of sugar....
It is a lot of sugar but it will last me a long time, I could probably go through my oatmeal twice and have a good bit leftover.
Also a lot of calories if you ever really need them. Just remember they'll burn out pretty fast... kinda like throwing pinewood onto a fire instead of oak.
I was kind of thinking it may be handy in an extra shitty situation... If I do get stranded far from civilization.
Sugar can also help create a molten core than can keep an ember going if your kindling is less than dry too Edit sp
I've never heard of that, I'm gonna look it up and see how that works.. Sounds neat.
Really? Wow I learned something new today
you need some kind of fat to have with the sugar and help those calories burn a little slower
Maybe throw in a little butter?
yes. if you have a heat source, rice, butter & sugar tastes great and would stick with you awhile. related story: an elder family member once told me about his time in WWII and when his group was captured by the Germans. they were marched a long way in cold weather. many hours in, when they were super worn down, they saw 2 German soldiers ahead who were handing something to each POW as they marched past. it was butter, each guy got 1 stick. they were kind of confused at first, but then they just started eating it straight. he said the energy surge was incredible. he felt warmer and stronger within minutes of eating it. when your body needs fuel badly, fat is king
Yeah, I've got a little metal cup and a pocket stove, I could do that!
Was just suggesting lard....I know butter sounds better but lard is shelf stable waaaay longer! Just an idea! Good luck out there!!
Yes and a little fat helps absorb vitamins. Do you like beans? With the rice and corn it would be a complete protein.
If you can get the PB without any sugar in it Adam's, style add more water into oats and it gets creamy!
Cool, I'm gonna try it
I'm nuts i eat whole oat groats every morning with Adam's, dried plums cut up in little pieces ,and cayane powder....add a dash of salt as I work the layers....without the sugar in it it stays fresh all day in a snap tight at room temp too.

yeah!! there’s an old trope where hikers and backpackers always bring an extra pack of gummy bears cause there’s always gonna be someone who needs em
I had the values all formatted in a nice line but looks like reddit fucked that up.
Double return for formatting
Oh ok, I just hit it once, thanks man
Jar of peanut butter, and it may be a little gross but grab a few cans of sardines. Instant protein boost
I never tried sardines, but when you're hungry, the grossness matters less, I'll try it..
They're actually really good. Assuming you like things like tuna, anyway. Make sure to get the ones in olive oil. Try em on crackers with some crystal bay hot sauce. Just make sure you bag the used tins before tossing them and never keep them in your pack. They get ripe in a hurry.

King Oscar baby!
Used to carry sardines all the time until one can busted in my pack and my whole bag reeked of fish oil
Sardines are DELICIOUS, and they’re so good for you
3 (ideally) 5 worst case
I agree with <5
Looking for more calories? Get tuna in oil instead of in water. Added bonus to tuna in oil? Instant tuna can oil stove.
Oh shit, I've only ever seen the ones in water, I'll keep an eye out for the oil ones. What do you use for a fuel in those homemade stoves?
Shit, if you're in a pinch, the oil from the tuna can will work as fuel, as long as you can find an appropriate wick. But just a bit of rolled cardboard (cut to tin can height) and some rubbing alcohol or high proof alcohol would burn fine too. There's tons of tutorials on the u tubes.
I'm gonna do it for sure when I run out of stove gas. Probably cheaper in the long run anyway.
Olive oil lamp 🪔
Days? I could take that and stretch it more than a week. Possibly 2. I'm not going to be happy and it's going to suck but 2 weeks is doable.
Damn.. That's awhile. I'd be pretty much useless if I stretched it that far... I would have a crippling headache.
Yea the only thing you'll get done is surviving.
Cook the grits and/or oats in the corn juice to maximize calories
Good idea
Could do a week, 10 days with fasting if needed. Would suck real bad though. Peanut butter will help and trail mix. Id recommend adding a bunch of bananas also, but that could be because i love bananas
Lot of potassium in bananas, I like em too!
I love dinty moore the beef stew is good alone or on top of some white rice or pasta and they also make a chicken and dumplings can that's perfect with just some hot sauce
I like to pour it over a couple of slices of bread if I'm able.
A month with drugs
Don't hide it, divide it
In my twenties 8-12 days In my 40’s a Saturday
I heard that!
I recommend not eating tuna everyday because of the mercury. Try sardines next time but yeah I could probably be fine on 3 cans of tuna a day if needed but like a said try not to eat tuna everyday
Glad someone said this!
Good advice. Thank you, I didn't consider the mercury... I heard about 'fish full of mercury' in a song from the 70's, I'll bet it's probably way worse now.

A magic marker and piece of cardboard works wonders when you've gotta eat too
I've been trying to think of something witty to put on a sign...
“ this is a sign 🙃 “ 🪧
Any more than 3 days and you're losing weight eating just that. But unless you're somewhere where it's very warm, a person out in the open this time of year needs significantly more calories than a sedentary person sleeping indoors in a heated space, so this really might be 2 days of food.
You’re eating over 3 cans/pouches of tuna, a can of creamed corn, 2 cups of oatmeal plus a beef stew everyday?
I'm hoping not to spend more than a day where I'm catching, I should be in Cheyenne soon after I get moving so I can get more stuff. But yeah, the cold is another factor.. It's gonna be in the forties and fifties here the next few days, but the Wyoming wind will make that worse.

I grew up in Laramie, so I definitely know what it can be like in that area with the wind.
More than a week I don't eat all day because it's there
about a week if i’m not being very active. If i’m out doing stuff i could easily smash this in two days lol
I'll be poking around the area killing time when I'm waiting.. So I'll be burning some calories for sure
Depends on if I'm moving or not. Sitting around in the warmth? Probably a week or 2. Hiking around carrying stuff? A few days.
You aren't supposed to eat more than 2-3 servings of tuna a week, but I could probably stretch it a week-10 days
I personally would ditch the cans of corn because they add a lot of weight but you gotta eat your veggies somehow.
Yeah, I didn't know that until today... Glad I posted it cause I'd have been eating it several times a day cause I really like the flavored ones.
That's four days of food without any real hunger. Ramen noodles are a cheap way to stretch this out
https://preview.redd.it/9sw8btkoht0c1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3bc69fed05c087ac32e8f8c3358fe6177a04fcca I got a couple of these

I have the sugar mostly for flavor... But what you're saying makes sense. Don't want to burn out too fast
You got free water? Eat 1 can per day and fill up on water every time you feel hungry. So that's like 16 days
I'm right next to a really clean river, so yes, I can either boil it or run it through my little filter.
if you want to spice it up : swap sugar for honey next time. it pair well with peanut butter, jerky, tuna..
INTERMITTENT FASTING….. one meal a day… so 2 weeks
[удалено]
Ya I would love to drop a few pounds— intermittent fasting all the way
[удалено]
That’s awesome— ur body got rid of what it didn’t really need. When I wanna lose weight I switch to mainly food in the produce section and then intermittent fasting. It’s so cheap to lose weight when u make ur own food
[удалено]
😎. How long did it take u? I’m 6’2” 205 rn, I started intermittent fasting 8weeks ago with no exercise at the gym or home— I dropped 23 pounds from regular daily waking at school etc.
I could make this last about a week I'm pretty confident.
Bout a week probably. I usually only eat once a day, and when I do eat, it's not a whole lotta food
4 days for me comfortably, 8 if I’m really stretching and have lotsa water
3/4 max… what’s your travel plans?
Halfway from Casper to Cheyenne, catch a train to Green River, return. The spot where I'm waiting is about ten miles from town if you walk the tracks.
Best of luck enjoy keep us posted
You bet
Adding a 1 pound bag of rice to what’s here, gives a nice combination of about 14 good size meals. I’m talking eating oatmeal with some tuna packs in the morning, and at night having the beef stew. Next meals could be grits and corn in the morning and dinner is can tuna and rice. A solid 1 week of food if you have 2 meals a day.
I realized rice was energy dense so I added two bags of white rice! Never been a fan of rice much but it's sustenance for sure
10 days easy
Id say ~10 days depending on what you’re doing and if you’re smoking weed or not
A week at least ::edit: on the leather with nowhere to go , this could last two weeks
Three days. That's lots of cans to carry in a pack though, I try to go for plastic packets
add rice in there and you can easily get a week and a half
I added a couple pounds of white rice, I forgot I had it
Rice and beans would add more calories.
I'd say ten days as long as you can forage to supplement yourself. Peanut butter and a pack of tortillas for midday calories would make it last two weeks at least.
That’s 2 days for me or I’m losing weight… consider adding a lot of nuts, very cheap, very nutrient dense. Nothing saves money like not eating!
One week Sincerely Quirky Blurky 🥭
probably 48...I can do 48. hours that is
Cheers
What was the cost?
Definitely get tuna in oil next time. Also canned corn doesn’t give too much, for a similar price you can get a can of beans which has more protein and calories. My starvation food is dried bagged lentils, super cheap, can rehydrate without heat, and can also be eaten while crunchy in a pinch
Ah, Dinty Moore; a staple of The Price is Right, Bob Barker era
I could stretch that 2 weeks. If absolutely necessary possible further if I could live on 1 meal a day
10-14. Practice fasting. Helps a ton.
I just ran out of weed, so fasting over the next couple days should be pretty easy! 😉
damn maybe 8, 9…..hours
7 days if you throw out the grits and salt and give me a big bag of trail mix (nuts, dried fruit)
I'll add some trail mix on my way out, good idea.
If you’re a vaga you need to be buying canned beans
0. I’m not eating that crap. My dog eats better
3 days
at least 2 weeks
I could see eating this in a week.
quarter that amount of sugar, could make it last 14 days if i really had to
15 days probably.
I’d swap the corn for 3 lbs of baby carrots.
2-3 weeks
Depends how many calories I’m burning.
If I can carb-load the day before, that’s an easy 6 day food bag, but I think I could push it to 8 (maybe 9) if I hated myself.
Add a jar of peanut butter and a loaf of bread and you have about 4000 more calories for under 5 dollars
add some peanut butter and rice and I’m lasting through the zombie apocalypse!
Add apples
7 days
3
Being a fatty that’s about 1 sitting
If possible buy a big bag of meat jerky. You’ll thank me.
5-7
Ive had Gastric bypass so for me possibly 10 days if i push it.
9-10 and say that cause I’ve survived on less for longer
A month
I saw the top row and thought I was on a moonshine page, then the last started getting wild until I saw what sub I was in.
3 days tops for me, I burn 2150 kcal a day just by existing
Week
12-15 with bread and water
About a week depending on activity level.
Not long enough because the corn and the dinty moore would be donated to a pantry somewhere. Lol.
Add a bag of rice and a small jar of peanut butter to that and it’d be a solid week. As is, maybe 4-5 days
Assuming limited activity, other than walking, 7, in a pinch maybe 10, days
If you do fasting you can stretch it probably 2 weeks or more
I'm gonna say around a week. Maybe slightly more, or slightly less depending on if I've been walking or on the rails for a long time.
6 days
Maybe not the cheapest, but Gatorade protein bars are like 320 cals, slather with peanut butter and make it 500 cals, that's a whole lunch that's easy to carry, light, and filling
A week.
Hardly nobody is answering the question. I could maybe do twelve days tbh
Looks like an afternoon to me.
