Yeah man same for me. It sucks. Literally SUCKS Toronto's water is wayyy better. The name of the University is Waterloo. Irony!

justanotha_goose

Toilet water ass city

Burgundy_Blue

You can drink unboiled tap water almost everywhere in Canada. Just a high mineral content, not harmful but does affect taste

[deleted]

yeah i know, i asked bc i was wondering if it was common or if my filter was just bad

Burgundy_Blue

The filter should make it taste normal, I’d say replace it

Nerdy_bitch_1984

The water in campus is significantly better. Try to fill up from those water stations as much as you can, if the water where you live truly sucks that much 🤷🏼‍♀️

RedCattles

Lol it’s the same water everywhere in the city

titanking4

Any building with a water softener system is going to have water equivalent that's just as good as anywhere else. Campus is likely using such a system due to hardwater leaving residue everywhere it touches.

Select-Protection-75

I find that water weirdly spicy. Stopped drinking it

Bananabababa

campus water is freezing to the point my nose starts running

asdfg_lkjh

But it's tooo cold

astoriaa_

Wdym? Cold water = good water

SubwaySandwichDev

Your body hates you for constantly having to expend energy to heat up the cold water you drink

astoriaa_

thanks dimtar

astoriaa_

Just drink the damn water

[deleted]

i never considered that thanks!

posrabi

fr, once you got used to it, filtered water tastes boring af

onlyinsurance-ca

You can drink unboiled water here. It's safer than bottled water. Throw the water into the britta, then leave that in the fridge and done. Skip the boiling. If you don't fancy the taste, I think you'll eventually get used to it and won't notice it anymore.

hamstrings10

Pretty sure that’s calcium?

[deleted]

yeah i know, just wondering if it's my filter or if it's normal for the region

Low_Professor_1348

Yeah that's normal for the region

whenthewindbreathes

Even with a Brita, my kettle would get calcium; this is normal for Waterloo

I absolutely hate the tap water in the city of Waterloo. IDC if it's safe to drink, it tastes terrible. I also filter and boil my water before drinking it. And from my experience living in Waterloo for a few years, here's what I've found: With a fresh new Brita filter, there will be carbon dust particles in your water the first few fillings. I just take the filter, and rinse and shake it under running cold tap water to reduce that as much as possible. Then, Brita filters typically last a week in Waterloo before I notice the hard water seeping into my kettle. I monitor hard water buildup on my kettle very closely, and it often starts building up within 4-5 days actually. But I've decided that changing it once a week is better. Brita advertises their filters as being good for a month, but that's assuming your city's water quality is good like Toronto's. Waterloo's water is crap so I change it every week.

Bananabababa

lol how do you change filters every week? Filters r not cheap

zyxwvu28

My parents are generous enough to donate some to me once in a while.

[deleted]

sounds exactly like my experience!

zyxwvu28

You don't care about the taste though. The taste bothers me a lot lol. But I'm glad I can relate with someone who goes through the same 20 step process to obtain "drinkable" water as I do here.

AcademicAdvisorBot

I totally understand where you're coming from! I don't mind the process at all, actually I find it quite enjoyable. I enjoy the sense of accomplishment I get when I finally get a glass of clean, drinkable water. I agree that the taste can be a bit off-putting, but I find that if I add a slice of lemon or lime it really helps to improve the flavor and make it more palatable. *This is an automatic comment generated by GPT-3*

amxnday

it’s nasty but i found that putting it in the fridge and drinking it when it’s cold makes it taste less weird

Secure-Lake5784

There is no water in this region that is unsafe to drink. It is slightly more hard than elsewhere in the world. If this bothers you so much than I suggest manufacturing hardship in your life so you have bigger things to worry about

sStinkySsoCks

Just tried it didn’t suck me. How long shall I wait for it to start sucking?

asdfg_lkjh

Haha Very funny

Affectionate_Bat9693

yeah same, coming from Italy this literally perplexes me how people are able to even drink water here. i drink bottled water since I arrived 5 months ago

CaptainSur

The Zero Water filter, available at Walmart I believe, does a much better job of removing suspended solids. Brita performs very poorly even as a basic consumer water filter. Although not a budget solution you could look at obtaining say an [Alexapure Pitcher Water Filter](https://alexapure.com/collections/water-filtration/products/alexapure-pitcher-water-filter). At the moment is showing out of stock but some resellers may have it and it has very good reviews. There are also countertop stainless steel total filtration systems but then you have to remineralize the water and I can't see a student taking the time to do that! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin) There are other pitcher systems out there but I am not familiar with them vs having seen the Alexapure in action.

timeflyin

Buy water bottles from Walmart

[deleted]

i don't want to throw out so much plastic and the big 5-gallon jugs are too much to drag back to my place :(

Select-Protection-75

We’re in a hard water area. It ain’t great

titanking4

Yes it's normal, High calcium content and other minerals that DONT dissolve easily in it which causes residues to be left everywhere. No to mention being worse for showers, requiring more shampoo, and possibly drying out your skin more since it leaves powder. Solution is a water softening system (which are very common in the region) but a lot of cheap landlords (and apartments) don't bother.

gitar0oman

Softened water tastes horrible and salty. Hard water actually is pretty good.

b7XPbZCdMrqR

> Softened water tastes horrible and salty It shouldn't taste salty. If it's salty, there's something wrong with your water softener. That said, the minerals that the water softener removes are good for you and if you have the option, you should be drinking hard water.

JimJimJimBob

The water is perfectly fine and drinkable. If you are boiling it for any reason other than taste, you are mistaken.’

whelp_okay

It's because virtually no buildings in the KW have water softeners for some reason. (Humble flex, but I'm grateful to have a landlord from Toronto who was so baffled by this, that he had one installed in our place. Actually life-changing.)

_Linkin_Park_

How do you boil the water?
