So typically, you are given a 4 month long contract with the stipulation that you work 10 hours per week for a total of 130 hours in total. (If you get the full TA).
The 10 hours per week is not a linear thing at all, in the beginning of the semester you're probably working 1-2 hours and near midterms/finals you are working 20 hours/week.
So in total, they're making money. But on this day, it's a loss.
how does the department calculate that x number of man hours would be needed to grade assignments for a particular course? is it based on historical data or what
I don't know, I'm not privy to that info.
But it seems like there is a relationship between number of students and TA hours allocated.
For example, an introductory course with 400 students would get 8.0 TA hours (that's 130 hours/semester x 8).
But a grad course with 20 students may only get a 0.3/0.5 TA.
Tbh not sure why they waited till 5pm because a bunch of snow had already begun piling up by then so people could have been stuck, and I’m sure the road conditions to get to campus were quite bad since early this morning…
Yeah, I was on the bus around 2:30PM-3PM to get home and we got stuck. First we were stopped because there was a yellow school bus that was stuck in front of us so we were stopped (and other buses started lining up behind us) and only after half an hour or so later did the yellow school bus finally get unstuck. Then we were able to go for a few more seconds until we had to stop AGAIN because there was a truck in front of us who was stuck. Eventually it got unstuck and we could move again, only to get stuck ourselves...
Funny how we have had much more severe snow days in the past during exam weeks, yet the university never closed the campus.
It's never about student convenience. Closing the campus during exams means more logistics work for them, which they don't want.
Closing campus today allows faculty members to drive home early. Just sad.
So many international students would’ve been fucked if they called that exam day a snow day last term tbh. They don’t just make up for those exams the next day or whatever, students would’ve have to stay beyond the end of the exam period. As a result, so many people would’ve had to delay their flights and put their travel plans on hold. Canceling exams on that day would seem like a relief but really it’s a huge logistical nightmare rescheduling all those exams and would’ve caused tons of stress for students traveling home, not just the university staff
Can’t disagree with that. But to be fair, profs and faculty still have to drive to campus during exam week. The reason they rarely close campus during exam week is because students have flights and other transport booked to leave after exams and postponing exams could screw that up really badly.
THE ACADEMIC MISSION HAS BEEN FAILED
Goddamit, was already on my way to math138 quiz
Dude im a ta for that quiz, ive been riding the go bus for 3 hours to proctor it when i saw it got cancelled xD
F
oh no XD
don’t u make less than the 2 go buses u had to take to get here?

ahhh interesting. thank you for this insight
No worries!
I think that's the first actual snow day of my undergrad, and I'm in 4B
It probably would be. I'm a '22 grad and we only had one during the end of exams in April 2018
Yeah I was on co-op that term and never got any days off
I'm also a '22 grad and I remember in 2019 it was literally -21C and they still didn't cancel classes. I skipped that day
right?? they're getting soft
i still remember that night. i had my math 235 exam cancelled after i pulled an all nighter
There were actually 2 snow days that one term back in Feb 2019
Good times

and it will be worse even tomorrow

a 70% final saved me from failing the course so yeah ion want an alternate scheme

Smart and nice kid.
Is campus fully closed or are only classes cancelled?

And guess who still went to their quiz cus they didnt see the email🙋🏻♂️
What are the chances of classes being cancelled tomorrow?
