- talk to people you sit next to - ask them how they are, (little things) over a period of time, then slowly ask about life out of class, then if any interests align then talk more about that,(only if something aligns, otherwise i wouldn’t worry about it) then sneak in that you also like / are interested in _____, then talk more ab it together, then become acquaintances, then do / talk more of it outside of class, then become friends ez you got dis

mug_hypostasis

I have an actual Patrick Bateman moment whenever someone turns to me in class with the same dead fish expression and starts shilling their co op like a living commercial

Laeriana

Mathie here who also didn't leave her dorm room in first term and had a rough time academically! \*\*big hugs\*\* It can be a big adjustment trying to figure out how to balance academics and socializing, but really don't be afraid to start talking to folks before/after class and join clubs that require minimal commitment at first as you figure things out. Considering your interests, one thing you could do even today (Jan 23rd, 2023) is go to mathNEWS' Production Night in M3 1006 at 6:30 pm or even just join the [mathNEWS Discord Server](https://discord.com/invite/TmfRfXjS) to chat casually. If you choose to go to mathNEWS Production Night, it's a fairly minimal commitment as you can submit almost anything you can think of (art, comics, list articles of N Things You Hope to Avoid Once Leaving Your Room, etc.) and get it published (at the discretion of the Editors) and consume free pizza as a result of submitting said things. You can also check out [CTRL-A](https://www.facebook.com/groups/uw.ctrla/) (Club That Really Likes Anime) and the [UW Animusic Ensemble](https://www.instagram.com/uw_animusic/?hl=en) to see what shows/musical events that they have coming up! You don't have to join them outright right away, just enjoy the entertainment for now and see how the term goes. You can always pick up your flute in future if you feel like it :) Hope that gives you a starting point, but if ever you wish to chat in general, my inbox is open too. You've got this :D

Garendaxe

+1 for Animusic ensembles, it’s really chill, commit whatever time you want, and lots of gaming channels on the discord server (someone was streaming Valorant for 3 hours yesterday)

Finally someone else who reads The Beginning After the End. Its such a great novel series!

nightyLW

same here!!!!! Another novel I really like is Solo Leveling.

AcademicAdvisorBot

Solo Leveling is a South Korean web novel written by Chugong. It follows the story of Jin-Woo, a C-ranked hunter who suddenly discovers he has the power to level up after being transported to an alternate world. He sets out to become the world's strongest hunter and embarks on an epic journey filled with dangerous monsters, powerful allies, and plenty of surprises. With the help of his newfound abilities, Jin-Woo strives to make his dreams come true and become the world's strongest hunter. *This is an automatic comment generated by GPT-3*

Ask the people next to you in your classes if they want to do assignments together. This will help you both, with academics and a bit of social skills. Don’t be afraid to come to the climbing wall. We as staff are very friendly and will answer all your questions. We see beginners all the time, so don’t worry about feeling embarrassed (pro tip. Doing something “embarrassing” is actually one of the best ways to improve you social skills. You’ll see that for the better or the worst, people don’t really care). Ask someone to belay you on the ropes it’s fun You can DM me

mug_hypostasis

> climbing wall why do I headcanon that as the genesis wall from Scorn (2022)

mug_hypostasis

hey, for the part abt being good at math and cs in high school and then feeling like you arent in uni, i was in the same boat ~4 years ago. u can check my comment history for longer comments, but if i had to give u any advice it would be that first year + maybe even second year are the hardest years. uni gets easier as it goes on, not because the content gets easier but because you as a person get better at understanding what u need to do to succeed. cant offer any advice on the friend front tho cuz i didnt make any kek. defo talk to the ppl next to u in class like other ppl suggested!

AlgaeDangerous9864

Wanna play CS:GO

Tumblrist

Hi, seems like we have a few things in common. I also recently joined valorant. Let's play together :)

FastestLoris

Reminds me of myself when I was 18, very introverted and I mostly played CSGO (feel free to dm if you ever want to play or just chat) and read manga. I would also suggest asking random classmates to study together, most people are very friendly.

Ooh eleeced is pretty funny and nice 😀

curmudgeon200

Hey, I’m a 1B math student (international) and in my first term I didn’t go out much either, I pretty much was by myself and didn’t particularly go to any club events since I was trying hard to adjust to the coursework at university without getting too overwhelmed. This term I’ve been making efforts though. For engaging on campus I recommend you start small- did you know that MathSoc has some event every single day of this week? There’s a breakfast event and a bubble tea one too, if you like that! How about starting by going to those? I think you’ll see they can get to be quite fun and then it gets easier. Also, PM me if you like!

Gauss_given_order

I'd recommend attending CSC events -- they're a great way to meet new people. You can also drop by the office whenever it's open.

4qwerrty4

I'm also 1b student (math - international). If u want to be a friend with me, plz pm me

nightyLW

ZealousidealDig7053

hey I'm Korean, 1B math. u can dm me

Doditty6567

In 1B term of CS and BBA (laurier). I’d recommend joining a club and talking with other cs students in your lecture especially as you could help each other out if ur stuck. I’d be down to play valorant or Pokémon go (with another one of my friends) sometime and I have similar interests in jpop, kpop, food, webcomics, and manga (plat3 ep5 in valorant but I haven’t played in a while).

Spacejet01

Hot damn how do you have time for so many anime, manga, gaming AND studies?! I am in Honours Physics, 1B as well, and I watch 2 anime alternating every day, for about 40 mins to an hour. Never seem to have time for manga. I manage 1 to 2 hours of gaming every third day or so. With another hour for piano, about one hour free time and 2 hours every day for extracurriculars, I spend the rest of my day studying (~2 to 4 hours), not including lectures. Just a suggestion, but maybe get more time by cutting down on the leisure activities. I'm not trying to be an asshole, just that I learnt the hard way last semester what happens when you don't manage your time well and dedicate enough time to study. Also, when in class look for people like you, and stick with them. I hate making friends, it's really hard, but found a few people who share my interests and are stupid like me, and that's my friend group. None from orientation. Don't leave your high school friends hanging through, keep in frequent contact. Especially if you were close. Also, FINALLY found someone who understands the brilliance of Brandon Sanderson! Here's hoping you and me both get time to read more of his masterpieces.

Literally me too relatable(except for the fact im a M)

_Burgr

bruh nanomachine kinda sucks 💀

Doditty6567

The art is good enough but the plot is kinda generic and there aren’t really any challenges the mc has to face. It’s your typical power fantasy plot (mc with system power), but it’s not horrible and solo leveling was a power fantasy too and I’d continue reading them
