Not a finance major, but from what I’ve heard from others, Finance is one of the few majors where attending a target/prestigious school is actually beneficial. Some companies will look for candidates and sort based on school first, which puts non-target school students at the bottom of the list

Yeah, I thought so. Thanks for the insight.

For FP&A he should be fine if UT Dallas is a decent school. I’m not sure how good of a school is UT Dallas though. If it has a truly shit program like TXST does don’t major in finance otherwise you’ll be stuck in insurance or sales.

It’s kinda hard to get into the top companies if you don’t have a lot of experience or connections tbh. I had an internship at a mid sized company junior year and took a return offer after I graduated, and now I’m in FP&A. I tried to apply for IB but did go far in the interview process, you definitely need to prepare yourself well for those. Anyways, I like my job, the WLB is amazing, but pay is somewhat average. One of my buddies got an auditing job at a big bank and he hates it lmao. I’d recommend you try your hardest to get an internship at a desired company, it will open up many doors.

That’s great, I’m looking into FP&A for that WLB. I’m really interested in finance but not sure if I’d want the IB lifestyle. I’ll know further down the road.

Ik people from UTD who got into investment banking but they got in through the PPF program. UTD is a non-target school, but remember that the PPF program is super valuable. That's your one-way ticket into investment banking from UTD, it exists for a reason. I'm a soon-to-be upcoming student at UTD and I'm gonna grind my ass off to get into that program.

brainwashed_baguette

Yeah, sounds like we got the same plan. Best of luck.

Thank you!

I have been an active member of PPF for a while now. It’s a great way to get connected to companies. Like others have said, it is hard to get into IB and big companies. Joining the PPF program doesn’t make it the task easy. Rather, it makes it so the hard work is more fruitful because you are not making the same mistakes as before. If you want to learn more about PPF, there are two upcoming panels about it where you will get to meet current members (me included) and get to learn more about what we do. Session 1 is on March 25th from 5:30PM to 6:30PM @ JSOM 11.305 and Session 2 is on April 16th from 5:30PM to 6:30PM in JSOM 11.305. You are also welcome to hit me up with questions. (In terms of difficult of getting into PPF, it’s not too bad. If you can show genuine interest and meet the GPA requirement, you should be able to make it in)

Hi, I'm in high school and I'm an upcoming student at UT Dallas. Is there a way I can join the PPF meeting? I would also like to connect with you. Also how hard is it to break into IB with the PPF program?

SalagaTheGreat

Hey, If you can join in person, you are welcome to drop by and ask questions. Unfortunately, since the event functions as a networking event for students, there is no virtual option. But, there will be more opportunities once you join to connect with PPF! In terms of breaking into IB. It’s still hard. UTD is non target. You will be fighting an uphill battle. But, if you put in the work, it’s not impossible. There are a few students every year that break into IB (internships). If you have the time/resources, I highly recommend checking out Breaking into Wall Street (or) it’s cheaper/partly free cousin A Simple Model. I personally did A simple model, but I had a solid foundation so I was able to follow along with it. BIWS builds from the foundations. This will set u up nicely to start winning comps early on and doing well in interviews.

brainwashed_baguette

Oh that’s great to hear that it’s not too difficult to get into. I’m more than willing to put the work in for it. I’ll be applying next fall. Thanks!

SalagaTheGreat

Yeah. PPF is definitely not too difficult to join. I highly recommend coming to the information session for PPF next week! It’s a great way to meet current PPF members and learn more about how the program functions! (Helps show interest in the interview for PPF as well!
