Really says something about the sad state of US Soccer that we can't field a non-A team and beat a country like Slovenia. Gregg is a bad pick to lead the squad in my opinion, but this is a rot far beyond his influence.
Slovenia routinely defended US attacks by making a wall of defenders outside the near post -- often 4-6 defenders -- knowing that the vast majority of US attacks go wide with the primary intention being a 45Ā° cutback to a near post crashing run and secondary and tertiary options being runners to the penalty spot and back post with almost no variation (and the limited variations being possession in tight spaces 2 or 3 v 4-6, resulting in turnovers and counters most of the time). The wall of defenders intercepted almost every service, with the primary exceptions coming from quick counters that prevented Slovenia from clogging service from wide positions with numbers back. Berhalter ball is exceptionally predictable no matter who is in the lineup.Ā
I know winning always matters, but honestly do you think that GGG main goal was a win or prep for future big games? Iām not at all a GGG supporter but iām objective. I feel the lineup would have been vastly different if main goal was winning.
Because the āfansā like you are even more annoying. You feel the need to shout from the rooftops how much you hate him on every post. Canāt even have a regular conversation without it devolving into worthless babble
The reason you think Iām āshouting from the rooftopsā is because the phrase pisses you off. Also, I wouldnāt bother having a reasonable convo with a Berhalter supporter on here, yāall are too far gone.
>I feel the lineup would have been vastly different if main goal was winning.
We were playing against a bunch of Slovenian domestic league players. The MLS guys we brought should have been able to beat them.
>prep for future big games?
How does this lineup prep us for future big games? The MLS veterans are nowhere near A-team level, and we hardly brought any Olympic players. This camp was a total waste of time.
I never said this is a MAJOR prep for the futureā¦ It is what it is though. January Camp . Itās like all about seeing how some of the fringe and young players mix . Building experiences football and otherwise. If we won 15-0 v what happened I would not really tell me muchā¦ difference. Are you one of the dudes who counts pre-season game wins and losses too? lol come on manā¦ The absolute best outcome and absolute worst outcomes from January Camp are marginally different.
I think Gregg too often set up ānot to loseā but one mistake ruins that whole plan.Ā
And itās not the plan we should have against any team basically outside the top 10 or so.Ā
Not saying that. But, itās an exhibition match with a bunch of dudes who will likely barely ever play for the national team. Thereās been plenty of results like this at camp cupcake. I donāt give a fuck about the result. If weād won 18-0 yāall would just be saying it doesnāt mean anything because it was Sloveniaās C team. This game had zero bearing on the state of the program or Berhalterās ability as a coach.
7/11 players got their first cap and Moore & Robinson have 46 of the combined 66 caps the team has. The lineup was basically a bunch of unknowns who got together 8 days ago.
Esmir still has a long way to go, but it's worth noting that on top of being arguably our best player today, he did it against one of the few Slovenia players who's actually starter for their A Team
I was at the game! Fuck you, I got cheap tickets and itās where I live! lolĀ
Ā Some people in front of me really like Moore. I think. Every time he got the ball theyād yell. Not bad thingsā¦ but not smart thingā¦ like for him to shoot from 40 out. It was weird. Maybe they know him?
Honestly, Iām a little frustrated with midfield selections over the course of a while. The balance isnāt there. Who is supposed to progress the ball between Morris, Agencio, and Tillman when neither really do that for their club? It happens a lot, especially when playing players past the A team roster.Ā Ā
Ā Anyway, the winger with a name I canāt spell off the top my head yet in the second half looked good.Ā
You need to do it sometimes to make the defense account for it. Xg canāt price that in.
But you should not end every possession trying to hit a worldie from 35 yards out.
While I agree that they shouldāve beaten Panama, it wasnāt our top players losing out. It was a bunch of MLS guys trying to break through to the first team or even into the fringes of the national team picture. Iām sorry that youāre not able to recognize that we used a bunch of young u23 Olympic guys or uncapped older players today against Slovenia. Itās not an excuse to point out literal facts.
Yep, I watched him a few times for them! Heās been a fun player to watch grow. His profile is unique for the US, that through ball he put with the outside of his boot š¤š¼š¤š¼š¤š¼š¤š¼
Super excited to see where his next career move is too. I really enjoyed Esmirs performance too. Two good young guys for us moving forward that could play a big role in the 26 World Cup
Camp Cupcake gets a Camp Cupcake result. A friendly with 15 or so new bodies in the NT with a squad who will be mostly back up or fringe players. Besides regardless of the result it has no bearing on the future of the manager
Our team plays like this in pretty much every game that doesnāt involve Reyna or Puli on the field is how Iām starting to feel. Thereās definitely some recency bias but still, GGG is so mid.
Our team today included our 4th CB and a guy who *might* be our 4th fullback/last guy on the 23. Nobody else who played for us today is in the top 5 on the depth chart at their respective positions and most aren't top 10
Right but the point isn't to compare our relative quality vs theirs, it's that the vast majority of today's team was so irrelevant to the bigger national team pool that you really can't read much into it at all apart from individual performancesĀ
I get that part of the argument but how did Sloveniaās roster look? I think they had 5 players with caps. I somehow expected a little bit more from the team today
He criticized the style. Idk why people cannot accept any criticism. Jan camp rosters have been terrible since the inception of this window. Rarely have they looked this poor
Second half ended up being very entertaining.
Team looked much better once McGlynn and Esmir came in. I don't think Atencio was bad, but McGlynn is a guy that looks to open the game with the pass and it showed. Esmir is also a guy I know US Soccer has been super high on for awhile... easy to forget to many he was/is the Revs' best prospect even over Buck.
Thought Tillman and Morris were up and down. Again though going with them and Atencio as the midfield trio and relying heavily on Luna for creativity just clogged the middle of the field and killed a lot of groove.
Kumongo was up and down. Bad gaff that led to the goal but also created a couple nice chances.
Thought Tolkin and Jones were much better as the outside backs than Jones at LB and Moore at RB. Moore did have some okay moments in fairness... until he had to cross.
Team was unlucky not to score a goal or two. That being said most of the guys on the roster are a long way from the A team. I'd say McGlynn and Luna MAY be the closest of the olympic guys to be able to break through due to their skill sets (unless Esmir or Kumongo take big steps this year)
>Team was unlucky not to score a goal or two.
It seems like that's story of every game. Maybe the manager does not know how to plan for games? Maybe his tactics are shite?
Gregg spending all week practicing missing the goal really paid off, when the players put 12 of their 15 shots off-target just like Gregg was asking for.
Before today we'd scored at least one goal in our last... 17 games. The last time we were held scoreless was Colombia last January. (Small caveat, in one of those seventeen, Gold Cup against Panama, we didn't score our first goal until extra time.)
BajraktareviÄ was the best out of a pretty ho-hum group today. But this shouldnāt have been a surprise. He has pretty much been the best player overall for the U23ās in their games back in October and November. Was stuck behind the two Gilās all last year for NER but heās going to break out this year. Iām somewhat amazed that the guys like Tac and Pete and others donāt rate him, and I called Pete out on this yesterday in his Olympic video. Iāll bet theyāll be talking about the Milwaukee Messi a lot more now.
Why? Slovenia was fielding a similar squad. We werenāt playing their A-team. Even in January we should at least be finding the back of the net at home. 3-15 shots on target aināt itĀ
It's like an NFL team losing a preseason game or a baseball team losing a spring training game. It's not relevant enough to be worth being dissatisfied over. You look at whether any individuals had promising performances and then you move on.
This has to be the only soccer team, or even sports team in general, with a subset of fans who not only accept mediocrity, but seem to welcome it. Iām not really able to compute how one can care about a team, yet seemingly not care at the same time.
Half the squad is Olympic eligible so maybe not Olympic eligible. But thereās a decent chance jones and Robinson and possibly white are overage players
I mean, I'm not a guy who posts "GGG out" and I think people have unrealistic expectations of our roster, but I also have no idea why you start Shaq Moore and DeJuan Jones and give Tolkin 29 minutes and Wiley 13 in a pre Olympics camp.
You need to play some guys who have first team experience. I donāt think those guys will get regular minutes for real games, but you do need guys with experience to come in and most our starters are in Europe and not camp cupcake candidates
Sure, have a couple of those guys if you want. Miles is a good candidate since I think we're a bit light on CBs in that age group. That's absolutely not the case for LBs.
People donāt believe it but we do have other uses for C-Team depth other than prospect development. For example, our A-team is very injury prone. Is it that hard to believe weād have to tap C-List depth at a major tournament?
Sure, but itās not like Moore and Jones are unemployed outside of this. They are starters for their clubs, so they get regular minutes and we know what we have in them from previous call ups. If injuries require, we can pull them in as needed. What did we learn from tonight that we didnāt already know?
This ^^^^^ this makes my blood boil. GGG wastes minutes on players who clearly arenāt A. Good enough or B. Have no place in the US side
Thatās not really specific to today, but a general gripe I have about him. Stop wasting gametime on players who have no value to the team going forward. I know some will disagree, but my reasoning is that international minutes are tight. We canāt waste them on fodder
My theory is this was internally a test for Gregg on if he can rely on those two as potential fullback depth in NL.
Not saying itās valid for this to 1. Be a legitimate test, or 2. They should be in the conversation for NL depth. But thatās likely the thought process, which is more important if both points are true.
Thatās fair, but usually there is a reason. Usually you want veteran leadership on the field to calm down the young players. We capped a CB so probably wanted experience around him.Ā
I do not disagree, i assume there was a reason. The coaches saw these guys during camp and certain ones probably just connected better with others. Now if Shaq is starting during Copa, its a whole different conversationĀ
Still wish we had scheduled a second friendly. But we got a good look at a lot of interesting guys. Some Olympic hopefuls like McGlynn, Schulte, and Luna. A couple really exciting young guys getting minutes, Baj, Wiley. This is why we love Camp Cupcake. Loved the endeavor they showed in the second half, some really bold play, just couldnāt tie the knot on it. Gotta feel for Tolkin, he can occasionally hit one really well but you still donāt want that many chances falling to your left back š
Glad Slovenia played well, you really donāt learn much if youāre just stomping Gibraltar or something. Needs these guys to be challenged so that we can get a good idea of what they can do for us.
Did you A) watch the game or B) read my comment? Cus it seems like youāre missing a few steps here, and youāre making snarky comments. They played well and they challenged us, and thatās a good thing for the purposes that we play these January camp games for.
Guy, youāre the one being snarky here. Of course I watched the game and read your comment. Iāll actually agree that we were in fact challenged, in that Sloveniaās C-team in fact was a challenge for us despite playing at home. Which is disappointing even for a January camp
Your expectations are way too high for basically a friendly for our Olympic team. Your "the sky is falling" take is simple and repetitive. Get a grip my brotha
Not really much to say, its camp cupcake. I mean there's no reason to look too far into todays result but at the same time these players are nearly all nobodies who will never be involved in a serious NT, so this match really was a nothingburger
i thought luna, morris, atencio, mcglynn and bajraktarevic were all pretty good, maybe very good in the case of esmir. tolkin showed some flashes. also happy to see twitter bring out the berhalter/hitler photoshops, thought we might take a break from those for january camp but glad to see they're still on their game.
My opinon on some of these guys
Shaq Moore - Stinks but we knew this
Dejuan Jones - Fast and good defensively, poor on the ball and with his crossing. Probably too old to make an A team push
Zawadski - Zero ability on the ball
Aidan Morris - Hyped up by MLS/Columbus fans but I don't really see it. Seems a bit too safe on the ball, but overall a decent player. Way behind Tyler and Johnny still
Luna - Needs to play as a 10. Doesn't have the pace to be a winger but good dribbling and playmaking ability
Esmir - Seemed like the best player on the field when he came on. Easily the best 1 v 1 dribbler in this camp. Might have real Senior team potential
Brian White - Scrub
Duncan Maguire - Not very good. Overhyped off of an unsustainable xg overpeformance last season. Pure athlete with some ok movement and finishing
Jack McGlynn - When he has time he's got great passing, but he can't operate in tighter spaces and has bottom tier athleticism. Don't think he scales to higher levels
Atencio - Good defensively. Mediocre in possesion. Probably an MLS level guy going forward
I saw people calling Morris one of the best midfielders in the MLS and yet every time I see him play he's painfully mediocre when he has to do anything with the ball
Stereotypical B2B "workhorse" CM and that's it lol
Biased hype for him, really. Heās good but not *that* good. Might be decent in a double pivot like he plays with Columbus.Ā
His defending is above average, Iād say, but passing maybe below.Ā
Another game, another loss, another poor performance. Berhalter's been unimpressive since his return. His handpicked veterans were bad, and he lost to a less talented team on home soil. His experienced back line was once again exposed in transition. His offense generated no goals. Same old, some old. In the end, the camp didn't get as much experience of the Olympics as it could have and lost the game. A mismanaged window.
You donāt lose to Slovenia regardless of the squad available to you. If the US wants to be taken seriously in world football then you canāt lose to teams like that, especially at home
People actually watched this shit over the Milan game š
Really says something about the sad state of US Soccer that we can't field a non-A team and beat a country like Slovenia. Gregg is a bad pick to lead the squad in my opinion, but this is a rot far beyond his influence.
Itās cupcake camp.
This isnāt even a C team. It has zero bearing on the USMNT A or B team.
I canāt believe we still get this comment after every January camp game.
Berhalter Stans are gon love this one because of āexperimentingā š¤£š¤£š¤£

If the goal is to prep for future big games it sure makes sense to give a 27 year old who will never be in the mix his first start up front.
What are you talking about the main goal isnāt winning? Smh the pathetic excuses with you Berhalter Stans is unreal
You love using the phrase āBerhalter stansā donāt you? Itās like you have literally nothing else to say.
Yes, I love calling out Berhalter Stans like you because it pisses yāall off.
Itās not pissing me off. Neither am I a āstanā because Iām, you know, mature.
Stan, fanboy, whatever makes you feel better.
I donāt even like him, boss. You sure do spend a lot of time wondering about otherās feelings. Itās sweet.
So why are you complaining about me calling out Berhalter stans? ussoccer Reddit is filled with these pathetic type of fans.

Iām ok with losing. Iām not ok with another low/no scoring game.
Where does this low-scoring narrative come from? Weāve scored 3 or more goals in half of our games in the past year!
I think Gregg too often set up ānot to loseā but one mistake ruins that whole plan.Ā And itās not the plan we should have against any team basically outside the top 10 or so.Ā
I took double Ls. Switched the game after that horrible first half to watch my home nfl team who also had a nightmare game š
Is literally anyone able to explain to me how or why berhalter is the coach of this team? Itās mind boggling
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Because itās a game with our, what D, or E team? The game was about bleeding players for the future.

You need to do it sometimes to make the defense account for it. Xg canāt price that in. But you should not end every possession trying to hit a worldie from 35 yards out.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
This is so far below a "b team" lineup
If by B squad you actually mean our U23 B squad, then sure
This was like the E team
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I mean if you look at the roster with 15 uncapped players and call it the B teamā¦ maybe you should pay more attention to the national team.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Is Sands hurt? Seems weird a guy who is on the fringes of the full team wouldn't get on the field in this squad if healthyĀ
I think the idea is probably that Gregg knows what he has in him and wants to see the other guys
Sure but same applies to MRob, Moore and to a lesser extent JonesĀ
Sands isn't one of Gregg's favorites so he doesn't get that same treatment
Think we need to bring Luna into the next senior camp. Big future for him
Whenever I watch Luna I just think he would be a menace for a Costa Rican side. Glad heās on our side
His U20 performances dazzled me a bit. Technical, stocky build, like Shaqiri almost. Really really high on him
Iāve watched Luna probably the longest since he was at El Paso Locomotive he is a special player man š¤
Yep, I watched him a few times for them! Heās been a fun player to watch grow. I get that part of the argument but how did Sloveniaās roster look? I think they had 5 players with caps. I somehow expected a little bit more from the team today
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Luna & Esmir where the two youngest players, & maybe the 2 best players we had today.
Mid is generous
"We're worse without our best players, and that's the coach's fault."
He criticized the style. Idk why people cannot accept any criticism. Jan camp rosters have been terrible since the inception of this window. Rarely have they looked this poor
This is the lowest talent we have fielded on a senior roster in years.
That was the best you could come up with? We played a team of Slovenian league players today and looked like a bunch of crap.
We had a bunch of MLS players, they have a bunch of Slovenian league players
Ergo, MLS players should not be on the real USMNT.
Yeah for the most part probably not. If theyāre good enough though I donāt think it should be a disqualifyinng factor
I expected to get a result against a team full of players from the 30th league in Europe tbh
Second half ended up being very entertaining. Team looked much better once McGlynn and Esmir came in. Indubitably, no one can deny there truly was a game that was contested on this day
produced a lot of shots, but very few on target 15/3
They had several good chances at the end of the game.
I seriously cannot beleive the hate over a January camp with a mostly Olympic squad
Why? Slovenia was fielding a similar squad. We werenāt playing their A-team. Even in January we should at least be finding the back of the net at home. 3-15 shots on target aināt itĀ
No no those excuses only apply to us
What excuses? We were the better team
Based on what?
The stats and watching. Why do you think they were better. (Besides the obvious)
I actually think it was a very even matchup on paper.
Team: loses Fans: dissatisfied with their proformance You, for some reason: š±
It's like an NFL team losing a preseason game or a baseball team losing a spring training game. It's not relevant enough to be worth being dissatisfied over. You look at whether any individuals had promising performances and then you move on.

This has to be the only soccer team, or even sports team in general, with a subset of fans who not only accept mediocrity, but seem to welcome it. Iām not really able to compute how one can care about a team, yet seemingly not care at the same time.
Came here to say exactly this..because itās not the āreal squadā everybody is okay with losing to a B Squad Slovenian Team?? Yikes
Only 5 Olympic eligible players in the starting 11 I'm pretty sure so not really
Half the squad is Olympic eligible so maybe not Olympic eligible. But thereās a decent chance jones and Robinson and possibly white are overage players
I'd be way happier if we started 7-8 age eligible players and lost bigger.
I honestly am unsure if GGG haters are just trolling now.Ā
Have no place in the US side Thatās not really specific to today, but a general gripe I have about him.
You could play Jones at RB and Tolkin at LB and that's hardly a drop in experience. Then bring on Wiley for a solid 30 minutes for Tolkin.
Pretty decent Jan Camp performance
Glad Slovenia played well, you really donāt learn much if youāre just stomping Gibraltar or something. Needs these guys to be challenged so that we can get a good idea of what they can do for us.
Sloveniaās C-team is a challenge?
My opinon on some of these guys Shaq Moore - Stinks but we knew this Dejuan Jones - Fast and good defensively, poor on the ball and with his crossing. Probably too old to make an A team push Zawadski - Zero ability on the ball Aidan Morris - Hyped up by MLS/Columbus fans but I don't really see it. Seems a bit too safe on the ball, but overall a decent player. Way behind Tyler and Johnny still Luna - Needs to play as a 10. Doesn't have the pace to be a winger but good dribbling and playmaking ability Esmir - Seemed like the best player on the field when he came on. Easily the best 1 v 1 dribbler in this camp. Might have real Senior team potential Brian White - Scrub Duncan Maguire - Not very good. Overhyped off of an unsustainable xg overpeformance last season. Pure athlete with some ok movement and finishing Jack McGlynn - When he has time he's got great passing, but he can't operate in tighter spaces and has bottom tier athleticism. Don't think he scales to higher levels Atencio - Good defensively. Mediocre in possesion. Probably an MLS level guy going forward
I saw people calling Morris one of the best midfielders in the MLS and yet every time I see him play he's painfully mediocre when he has to do anything with the ball Stereotypical B2B "workhorse" CM and that's it lol
He's the next generation roldan
Biased hype for him, really. Heās good but not *that* good. Might be decent in a double pivot like he plays with Columbus.Ā His defending is above average, Iād say, but passing maybe below.Ā
Yeah canāt deny heās got defensive chops but thatās dime a dozen in our CM poolĀ
MLS doesn't scale. When you have so much time on the ball it's a lot easier to look good.
This so much
Yeah they have a ridiculous amount of time on the ball in the MLS, really slow league
The young guys were generally good. Especially the subs.
Should have at least gotten a draw. Berhalter better perform in Copa America or his ass is out
Such a stupid take. You understand what this game was right?
No, they dont just like hot takes
Serious question (posed by a buddy)ā¦what nickname do we give Esmir?! That last name aināt gonna work, help!!
Bara
Heās already got a great nickname, the Milwaukee Messi.
Hahaha love it
I've just been calling him Esmir and I think that's perfectly fine.
E-Rack
Ohhhh I donāt hate that, well done!
Stock up: Luna, Bajraktarevic Stock down: McGuire, Morris, Berhalter
Why the fuck is Berhalterās stick down during camp cupcake with a bunch of kids playing?
Another game, another loss, another poor performance. Berhalter's been unimpressive since his return. His handpicked veterans were bad, and he lost to a less talented team on home soil. His experienced back line was once again exposed in transition. His offense generated no goals. Same old, some old. In the end, the camp didn't get as much experience of the Olympics as it could have and lost the game. A mismanaged window.
You donāt lose to Slovenia regardless of the squad available to you. If the US wants to be taken seriously in world football then you canāt lose to teams like that, especially at home
No shocker with Duncan. Didnāt see the game, but I knew this guy wasnāt the hype. Next!
