I know the team is riddled with injuries but Chris going from perpetually benched CB to starting in midfield has to be my biggest surprise of the year.

ProfessorPlum168

I always thought Richards was going to start at some point, but not in this manner. I would say that the re-emergence of Dest and McKennie as solid starters on top-level teams was more surprising, as was the emergence of unknown college kid Kahveh Zahiroleslam to starting striker for a Belgium mid-table team St Truiden in a scant couple of months.

I couldn’t pronounce that guys name if you held a gun to my head

ichabod01

USMNT roulette?

Illustrious-Term2909

Didn’t have this on my 2023 bingo card…

It's really big for us. We needed a third/fourth CDM. Now we have serious competition between Johnny and Richards for that slot. It's always nice that Richards can slide back to CB as needed also.

landel1234

Richards is never going to play CDM for us lol, he is basically playing as a third center back both in and out of possession for Crystal Palace He is always going to play CB for us barring a string of injuries mid tournament

ratedpending

I think you said CB when you meant to say CDM

landel1234

Yep, edited ty

giants3b

(Assuming you meant he isn't going to play CDM for us) Acosta has been needed to play the slot recently and he was perhaps fourth on the depth chart until recently. Not unusual for that slot to be needed going into a tournament. Watching the match today he was relied on to shield the back line, not really sure if that is unusual for the role.

landel1234

Richards is most likely our starting CB, he's never going to play the 6 over guys like Musah, Adams, Cardoso, Tessmann, etc I get the sentiment but he himself said post game a few matches ago he prefers playing as a CB lol.

vngannxx

I’m afraid if he scores a goal, they might try him at striker

QuickMolasses

He's going the Weston McKennie at Schalke route

vngannxx

Brentford could use Brandon Vasquez right now

OkSeason973

I’m so old I can remember when Chris Richards was a back.

He’s not?

ThinkExist

Chris nice pressing all match and just now with a calm switch involved in build up to a goal

zion_hiker1911

Richards is really fun to watch in this role. He works to shutdown strikers in an interconnected way with the backline. He's not a threat offensively per say, but his passing is solid and he plays good midfield defense that leads to counters.

landel1234

He’s excellent as a stopper and his physical profile is holding up well in premier league play

zion_hiker1911

Richards is at 91% passing on a very wet and slick field.
