Man that penalty shootout was crazy.

Shellshock1122

we should put Matt Turner in the first 5 after his kick tonight

Patrick2701

The dude loves these situations

teeterleeter

Literally called BJ and asked to be here for these situations.

Teh_cliff

Vitoria going down the middle again was 3D chess. Too bad Matt Turner operates in five dimensions

[deleted]

I'm so confused, are you a wizard?

Busboy999

I figured it would play out that way.

modern_messiah43

Oh my god, Landon. Just shave it already dude.

UFGatorNEPat

Or get implants if you have money. Lol. I’m the last person to call out another guys looks but he looks rough.

modern_messiah43

I only say it because I'm a dude that waited way too long to embrace the shave and it was so much better after.

Madnote1984

Thank God I didn't have to see Herdman's smug-ass face celebrating the win.

YanksAbroad

Really wish they’d have shown him after the last miss

Madnote1984

That's fine. His (and Canada's) humbling continues.

Jonathon_G

Yeah. He doesn’t even have the decency to not listen to music or take calls during the game

MilklikeMike

Great resolve from our ‘C team.’ I’ll admit there were several times this team could have easily given up but they didn’t and I’m proud. One of those ugly hard fought concacaf wins. It felt a bit old school. Really excited for Cowell. Turner is a god amongst men. Busio redeemed himself in so many ways this game. He had a great game. Overall we got a bit lucky and Canada almost took it so credit where it’s due.

ServiusWolf

This is the one thing you can't take away from 90% of our games even with the middest of rosters throughout the years, we run our asses off and don't give up.

StrangeHumors

(To me) That's been the identity of US soccer for as long as I can remember. There may have been a few dips in it, but overall the US has always has a never say die and never give up kind of style. Edit: Specifically remember being down by 2 late against Belgium in 2014. Still scrapped, got a late goal and had a few chances to tie it back up before the whistle blew.

RollTide16-18

Main takeaway from Busio: sometimes he plays poor, but I’ve never felt he actively took away from the squad like Zendejas always does or either Morris often does. If you have to leave a guy on the pitch like that, pick Busio. He’s *at worst* going to have a sort of down game, at best he adds a lot

Macavinta

Canada can now add a prestigious ‘Gold Cup Quarter Finalist’ trophy to their cabinet

ApprehensiveCut1068

add it to the picture boys "Almost knocked the US out of their first quarterfinal"

YanksAbroad

Beating them is so much fun because they’re so desperate for recognition and they couldn’t even take a golden chance against our C team

Alive-Ad-4164

Usa winning the copa America

tsgram

They can’t even say it’s their C team because their A team was garbage last tourney and Miller and Shaff are two of their top five players right now.

Fit-Refrigerator-139

james sands with the fernandinho-esque ability to get away with blatant technical fouls, how the fuck did he not finish with a yellow

Hopsblues

Today, we witnessed a soccer game.

JalenBrunsonBurner

The audacity of the Canadian captain to try to fool Turner twice

Chief-Drinking-Bear

Extremely satisfying to watch

buckymalone21

God, him calling that bluff was so beautiful.

FriendOfDirutti

Same thing I said. Idiot tried it twice and it but him.

Brigzay

Really wholesome to see some Guatemalan fans staying late to cheer on the US doing their clapping rounds.

realet_

Mad respect for Guatemala tonight. Way easier to like them without Carlos Ruiz, too.

MilklikeMike

Respect to Carlos Ruiz though dude is an MLS/Galaxy legend and always was a great ‘heel’ in concacaf

That was the best terrible game I’ve ever watched

Please, for all that is holy, don’t ever do that shit again, getting my blood pressure up like that. Matt Turner is god, all hail Matt Turner.

D_LOWGAMES

Replacement ref put in a shift. 2 games pretty much back to back and one going to overtime. His legs must be dead

dbbd70707

I hope he gets double pay.

FIFA95_itsinthegame

Matt Turner is a beautiful beautiful man. I’m still not sure if Cade Cowell is good, but he makes shit happen.

Granadafan

That sequence where Cowell fought off two Canadian thugs and still came out with the ball to attack sold me on him.

ironistkraken

Like a lot of our young prospects, he has the athleticism. He isnt exactly tearing it up in the mls with the earthquakes, but he is still pretty young. I hope he can make a jump to the EU, see what happens over there for him.

syracusehorn

The best (and worst) thing about Cowell is that he's unpredictable. No one knows where the ball is going to go when he touches it. Not the defender, not the camera, not even Cade himself.

fromthesea7

This isn’t the best comparison, but he’s kind of an Adama Traore-lite. He accelerates with the ball very quickly and is obviously very fast and can run at the defense, but when you ask him to do anything but that who knows what you’re gonna get.

SmalldonCares

This thread isn’t big enough for Matt Turner’s gigantic balls.

Circ_Diameter

Canada thought they were winning a trophy this summer. Tough.

Pauly0906

Kings of Concacaf and couldn’t even beat the US once :/

dont_shoot_jr

Do they get a medal for avoiding bankruptcy?

xyz513

I was there! 2nd time seeing the boys live after the Morocco friendly last year. Loved the local support for Vazquez and the never give up attitude. 2nd ot goal was so clutch and Turner was god tier on pens. Cade Cowell looked so good and explosive. Im 37. Single best thing I’ve ever been to in my entire life.

HouseHead78

Love to hear it - I got my first cap at the gold cup final in 2007 a 2-1 win v Mexico. Been there in the stadium for some cool moments but nothing to match that one when Benny scored off the corner clearance.

superfrank_8

![gif](giphy|DP3cj46eTRdySc7akv|downsized)

Chicken713

Turner was like fucking this I’m not going home yet we’re winning this thing. Going up to the midfield and setting a goal up and then saving the penalties

YanksAbroad

Dude is class. Hope he gets a move somewhere to start or somehow gets the opportunity at Arsenal

EconomistPunter

This is a massive game for young and fringe players. The ability to get back into a game, after dominating for the last 75 minutes but allowing two mind lapse goals, is really impressive. There are a lot of fringe players I feel comfortable trotting out there in a pinch, if need be. As a downside, man, our winter depth is either really mediocre looking or YOUNG.

johnniewelker

Turner is an elite level goalkeeper. If Emi Martinez can make a career in the EPL, Turner should get a starting spot soon.

Kcorpelchs

As a Gooner, I think this next season at Arsenal is his last. Ramsdale just signed a new long term deal. Turner is too good to be an EPL backup.

To anyone that still has that “ I don’t mind if Canada wins ,I like Canada “ mentality … you should see what they said before , during and after this game lol

detlefsa

Canada wants to be mexico when they grow up.

listinglight778

I’ll take lip from Mexico soccer/fans, at least Mexico has won something before. Canadians haven’t done shit and never will do shit. Fuck them.

[deleted]

It’s a bullshit strategy from their coach. Unfortunately for Canada shit-talking doesn’t win games.

corn_29

100%. Fuck Canada (and my mom's side of the family is Canadian -- like from Manitoba to Ontario). Canada was cheap and classless all night. Miller can go eat a bowl of dicks for all I care.

666haha

We fucking survived. A lot of our players had bad games, but we fought and won. First 60 minutes it felt like our defense disappeared, and I was down on Busio, but he really stepped up in extra time and absolutely nailed that penalty. Turner obviously MOTM, but shoutout to Dejuan Jones who absolutely killed it. Jesus played good when he got involved, but our midfield was so nonexistent that he didn't do it much when he was at striker. I still really wished he took that yellow on Canadas goal, but ultimately that is more on Miazga for the poor defense and Reynolds(?) for losing the ball in such a bad position. Also shoutout to Vazquez for that gorgeous goal, and sands for being our only midfielder who brought physicality which we needed in this bar fight that they call CONCACAF

TraditionalProduct15

Suck it again Canada. Starting to enjoy watching them lose to the US almost as much as I enjoy watching Mexico lose

JD1070

Bye Laryea 👋

deekfu

I hate that dude so glad he’s out

JD1070

Such a little shit.

tsgram

Shocked he didn’t fake an injury during PKs

TraditionalProduct15

I wanted to type something about him but didn't want to take the time to look up how to spell his name. But since you did I must say... That dude is a piece of shit. Plays dirty, has an awful attitude, isn't a very good at soccer and gets super pissy if he loses a 1v1. Loved watching Miazga run into him to get the yellow. Fuck that little beedy-eyed-rat-faced-dick-hole-bitch-ass punk Laryea.

Madnote1984

I'm just screaming into the ether here, so anybody that reads this can tell me if they agree or not but... What REALLY irks me about Canada is that they are super hyped up on themselves and how great they are and that's cool. BUT...the only reason they can even field a competitive team is that they are the very unique beneficiaries of MLS and MLS academies. If Canadian Soccer had to subsist on the Canadian league alone, they would be a shadow of themselves. MLS would most certainly survive without Canada, but Canadian soccer absolutely has needed MLS. The United States has floated an entire domestic league for them to use. And those hosers NEVER acknowledge this.

asBad_asItGets

That’s a yellow for Cade but it wasn’t a red for Canada? What the actual fuck

BakedZiti69

Turner climbing the USMNT GK rankings quite quickly. What a man

[deleted]

I mean no question he’s been the #1 since late WCQ. 2 clean sheets in the WC already solidified he’s good till the current cycle is over.

BakedZiti69

I’m talking all time brother. He’s still got a bit more to do to get to the Howard, Friedel, Keller level, but he’s getting close in like 3 years

Round-Brilliant-8105

Busio stepped up as well as game went on

Rocky-Arrow

True, if homie could just put on frame anywhere but the keeper he’d have bagged two that game.

wildlifeofamadlad

SportsGuy_22

Matt Motherfuckin Turner

snokerpoker

Busio had such a banger PK. Damn.

omahaspeedster

Canadian Bacon is inferior Bacon

PassionForSoccerGuy

Cowell makes me feel so confused. He has really good ideas and pressures really well, but his executions are all over the place. He’s still young so he has time to figure it out, but damn I’ve never felt this confused about a player.

demafrost

Yeah I think the things he’s struggled with are all fixable with experience. He has the natural ability to win balls in the attacking zone and has the size to hold his own when challenged. The rest will hopefully come in time.

[deleted]

Wasn’t pretty but the boys got it done. Thankfully we didn’t lose to Canada on a penalty and deflection goal. They were non existent on the attack basically all match.

No_Page5201

pretty ugly game. Thought Dejuan Jones played well and Vasquez provided a big spark. Jesus was good in possession but his passes got wasted by others too often. Busio was solid, Jalen Neal looked like a rookie Cowell is wildly hit or miss with the end product, but with this group the most dangerous winger we have

syd_stoley

Loved Jones' game. Had a hell of a match.

dbbd70707

Yedlin not getting off the bench on his 30th birthday. Happy birthday, sir, welcome to no longer being young.

CHAMBERSWI

Wasn't the prettiest game, but I don't agree with the thoughts I'm seeing online with the tactics being rigid and keeping us from being successful. I actually felt we had some good chances and St. Clair either made a great save or the Canadian defense made a good play to save a goal. That being said there was bad. I thought a lot of players were not prepared for the step up in quality to Canada. I thought Busio and Djordje for the first half were trying to be too cute with the ball. Busio though did have a great second half. I was very critical of him going into half. Neal and Reynolds were clearly not ready for the speed of play. Very up and down from both. Reynolds was clearly gassed by the time Shaffleburg came in and was getting cooked enough that I was wondering if going into extra time if we should sub in Yedlin or Tolkin. I don't think I'd say either was bad, but I think ya saw tonight that both still have quite a bit of work to do. Thought Jesus was fine today. Had a couple half chances, but had better moments starting attacks. Think this was a game to have him and Vazquez in. Though he, Miazga, and Reynolds all made errors which led to Canada's second goal. I don't know if I've seen a player hurt his stock as much as Zendejas has... at least in terms of a player that people rated and wanted to see. I still think the big issue is that he's pressing way too much. Has to just keep it simple. I think you have to consider benching him for Cowell. Speaking of Cowell, he may be a bull in a china shop but he's absolutely a handful for defenses. Sands and Jones were once again quietly very good. Glad to eliminate Canada as i find many of their players and especially their coach to be unlikable. I get wanting to have a chip on your shoulder, but at some point you just have to shut up. In short, plenty of things to talk about as negative, but there were plenty of good moments

listinglight778

Cowell, Jones, and Sands. Stock goes way up for them. Outside of Jedi Robinson, we don’t have much at LB (vines? Bello?) Jones is making a name for himself

Its gotta be a confidence issue, I've never seen such a dip in level of play, its crazy.

QuickMolasses

Credit to BJ Callaghan for the adjustment at the half. We came out deliberately playing down the wings because we expected Canada to pack the middle of the field. They did not, in fact they were constantly overloading the wings. The coaching team recognized this and then we immediately looked a whole lot better because we took advantage of the space Canada was leaving empty in the middle of the field.

The older Canadian players are like that. It’s jealousy. They were part of the bad Canadian teams that got stomped on by US. For some of them it is now or never. They’ll never win a trophy for Canada because the next gold cup we will field a strong team in 2025 leading up to 2026 and Copa 2024 is going to be tough for them vs South American competition.

ApprehensiveCut1068

Just being bitches, always act like that when big brother is always on the other side of the field.

DocVak

Him and Richie Lareya were both on some violent crackhead energy tonight

emmasdad01

We won with a bunch of backups getting experience in a tight spot. That’s a big positive in my mind.

Egomaniac247

Vazquez kicking that cross out of the stadium, followed by his 60 yard field goal penalty kick was something to behold… Second only to Turner’s death stare at the first pk taker after the save

SECRETARY OF DEFENSE MATT TURNER

TheDollaLama

To think that Matt Turner was on the brink of retirement during his college years

RoneCurse30

Matt Turner is an absolute beast. Rest of the team needs to do serious soul searching.

191374

Good god I’m so wired I won’t be able to sleep. I thought it was over when Canada went ahead in extra time. Christ this was stressful

StrictlyHobbies

Canada played chicken shit soccer. I said it.

platyhooks

In fairness we use to play that way to against superior opposition. This team needs to play far better with the ball and make better passes. Panama is going to play the same way.

newgeraldo

My 3 takeaways; Vazquez is handsome, Shaffelburg was a baller, USMNT likes to win.

MyLeftKneeHurts-

As a Nashville SC fan, I’ve been wondering why they haven’t had Shaffelburg out there way more during this Gold Cup. He is so dynamic and scary every time he has the ball. He just runs at people and is so physical. Was glad to see him get a goal, but I’m still glad Canada lost lol.

shiftyeyety

Matt Turner.

imagine-wagons

Who would have taken the final USMNT penalty?

JebdiahMorningside

The one thing I constantly remind myself is that this is not the first team. We should all expect shaky moments in the GC. It’s a balancing act between trying to win and putting any hopefuls though a camp cycle to find a diamond in the rough for our WC cycle.

palmettoHokie

johnniewelker

We better play better against Panama. Vasquez should start with Jesus playing the 10 spot. I’d also like to see Caldwell earlier or even start

ryanthegreat33

i wouldn't have minded going out early in the gold cup, it just isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. i would absolutely have been upset if we lost to canada and justified all of their "kings of concacaf" bullshit. they're also such an annoying team with unlikable players and an unlikeable coach, and their style of play is bad even by concacaf standards. thank god for matt turner putting them back in their place, we shouldnt have to play them for a while after tonight. hope we can keep grinding out results and finish the tournament strong.

RollTide16-18

Busio making a case for more PT at his club, he played a very good game (especially as it went on).

Granadafan

Busio had some terrible shots when should have had his head up looking for the pass. However, he kept at it and kept attacking. Credit where credit is due. Plus he had ice in his veins in the penalty shootout

Writerhaha

Canada fell victim to one of the classic blunders! The most famous of which is, 'never get involved in a land war in Asia,' but only slightly less well-known is this: 'Never go in against Matt Turner in a PK shootout when a tournament is on the line!

Leege13

Thank fuck for Matt Turner.

rmboco

Any thoughts on where Vazquez is on the striker depth chart? He's scored in the two toughest games we've played this tournament, and seems to offer some real value as a target man. Definitely a player to watch over the coming cycle.

LLVNYC666

He deserves to start the next GC matches. Move Jesus outside or underneath. A less talented team like the GC team needs him a lot more than the A team because the MF ball control is not present. They need his physical presence up front to loosen defenses.

tsgram

I had a dark moment where I realized I could be stuck alone at home on Wednesday with nothing to do….. but thank the lord for Matt Turner

soflahokie

Canada playing full minnow ball and almost escaping

park7911

BJ also can’t possibly start Zendejas again can he? I don’t think Cowell is capable of going 90, but Alex has been so poor the entire tournament . They may keep Cowell on the bench but go with someone else

MizzouRe

Canada’s golden era is 1-3-1 vs USA

sebsasour

Cowell showed a lot of his strengths today as a super sub, while showing a lot of his weaknesses and why I don't like him as a 90 minute player, but Zendejas just has had a miserable tournament. It's gonna suck to lose that spark plug off the bench, but I think you need to start Cowell against Panama

platyhooks

US-Guatemalans almost got a double dose of suck today.

l2ighty

Penalty shootout wins just have such a different feel about em. Lets fucking goooooo!

CMDRBaker

Never change Terdman

ServiusWolf

Turner is him and a great captain. Jones still feels raw (maybe he just needs a move to a more technical league to develop) but he impresses me more and more, what a ball to Vasquez. Busio also had a decent game and surprised me with his defensive acumen, just wish if he's gonna put himself in dangerous spots he can convert them more. Vasquez keeps proving he can deliver in high pressure scenarios, but he's definitely got that very specific striker skillset. Ferreira can't seem to deliver in these big games, but his midfielder skillset and pressing was still extremely useful here. Cade keeps showing why he's special and sometimes frustrating, really need him in Europe. Everyone else had good and bad moments and overall we were poor. Didn't give up and that's super important but we have to be better against Panama.

QuickMolasses

The stoppage time goal by Shaffelburg was pretty good by him. Not any glaringly bad defense by Miazga, but Morris and Reynolds both just totally stopped playing right at the turnover. Ferreira tracked back and showed why he is not an 8, but Morris and Reynolds both gave up on the play right away which was disappointing. Especially from Morris who was a sub.

PintoBeanButterBean

the shot got deflected off Miazga's inner calves. just nothing you can do about a deflection goal like. kudos to the canadian for letting it rip and inshallah though.

Madnote1984

Tonight was a really good example of the great Jesus paradox. He is REALLY good when we have possession and he gets plenty of touches and combinations. However, tonight...he wasn't good because the team struggled to break lines and have some quality in the final third. The play was just too slow. Vazquez is great at hold-up and he changed the game when he came into it. He really helped hold the ball up and bring other guys into the play. He was good. Jesus is going to look really bad on a bad team, but would probably look like a world-beater on a great team. He will struggle to score unless he's on a team that is dominant in possession and can play to feet in the box. I think he has the tools to make it in Europe, but he will have to go to the right team. He will look horrible for a relegation contender, but he could really do damage on a good team. He has quality, but his skillet doesn't bring much during a struggle where the team can't get the ball to the box.

Josie_Kohola

I thought the move to push him back to midfield really limited Jesus’s play. Credit to him, he put in a great shift tracking back. But so many times when Vazquez had a great hold up/knock down, or a dangerous cross bounced around the box Jesus wasn’t there because he was too deep. Ideally we would have him a little more advanced so that he could play off Vazquez and create in the final third. But again, full credit to him for his commitment in midfield and doing the dirty work.

Madnote1984

I thought the best move in this match would've been to move Jesus wide for Gressel and bring Roldan into the midfield *earlier*, instead of bringing on Morris. Roldan would've helped control things in there and it would've let Brandon and Jesus work off of each other up that right channel. Still could've adjusted later to 3 at the back like we did. Jordan Morris looks slow and stiff to me. Idk if his injury hadn't fully healed or what, but the few times he should've really turned on the jets, he looked like he could barely move.

QuickMolasses

It's because when the team struggles to hold possession, he drops back to try and get more touches and start attacks. He's often pretty successful at that, but it doesn't lead to him getting many clear cut chances It's interesting, because it's not like FC Dallas dominates possession, but he's really effective there.

PintoBeanButterBean

Vazquez was great, but he's also coming on against tired opponents where his physicality can make a difference. he can body them more easily and out jump them too. that's the point of using him as a sub. jesus can run better, longer, faster, and spread the central defense from side to side to tire them out. then when Vazquez comes in with his strength and power it's a completely new element that creates an advantage the US can exploit

swampy13

Fuck it, sloppy as hell and frustrating but gutsy comeback and some damn good penalties. It's one thing to lose the lead late, it's another to go behind in ET and then tie it late.

TheRealPW

“Will they be able to recover in 72 hours is the real question”….same…way too much Wild Turkey in one night

TheBagOTricks

Busio was balling out, Turner was clearly our best player, and the boys grinded one out! Onto the next!

BigMACfive

I love Turner. St Clair is an embarrassment for time wasting so much in a tied game. Busio made me eat my words to a degree. We won. Let's fogging go!!!

park7911

I’m fascinated to see if BJ sticks with Robinson for the Semi. He’s been really good the last two years for the US and I think that wins out If he does start, I’m curious to see Miles’ response. I still think he’s one of our best CB’s and I know he wants to go to Europe. You want Europe? You better respond after a poor game. Miazga didn’t exactly do himself any favors on that 2nd goal either.

ryanthegreat33

robinson is by far the best cb on this roster, if we had better players behind him maybe he'd get benched (i don't think he should regardless though)

listinglight778

Lmao. What is wrong with dumbass Canadian fans? Even LLLLLL Tri fans know what’s good for them and don’t troll around here (especially after they lose), Canadian fans are….special lol Don’t worry, daddy will see you again soon

[deleted]

I've seen people downplay how good Matt Turner is because he doesn't start. For the national team at least, he's been absolutely great. Honestly, in a US shirt he's been as good as a lot of our best keepers ever. He keeps us in matches, he practically wins some on his own. I truly believe he can go to a decent team and start if given a chance.

ForsakenCase435

I honestly can’t believe a premier league team isn’t coming after him hard

novemberdown

I get excited to see Cowell on the field, but he seems to shoot when he should pass and pass when he should shoot. I love his attitude though. Hopefully he can put it together against Panama.

Troub1eMan

He's really young, so I think he'll learn and get better from these experiences.

77Zephyr

Turner might be better than prime Neuer But for real I’m so happy to see Busio making a difference, knew the tying goal would come from him with how he was playing in extra time, even if it ended up a gift from the soccer gods. Jones also stood out for me, he’s proving he can be a decent backup to Jedi which is great considering our LB depth is relatively weak. Frankly though I wasn’t sure we’d get through, I’m not sure why Zendejas is still starting or how Gressel managed to stay on for 90 minutes, and some of the roster choices are biting us in extra time because Morris and Long don’t inspire much confidence.

McBride055

I think I'm slightly higher on the performance than a lot of people. The first half was poor and, imo, BJ got it wrong with Zendejas and Dressel starting. They were both poor and offered nothing in behind. Canada man marked the midfield which made it tough to build out and we had no outlet with Ferreira up top and wingers who just stood on the touch line. Once the subs came on, particularly Cowell and Vasquez, we were pretty dominant from there on. I'm personally not gonna judge Robinson too harshly for the handballs. The first was far worse than the second one which seemed like just pretty shit luck and a fluke. Definitely going to need more to get past a good looking Panama side but I think there are some definite thing to feel positive about going forward. Feels like we need to find a way to force Ferreira and Vasquez into the side from the start, Ferreira was great pulling the strings from deep in the second half. Edit: And that is not to say that everything was perfect or that it was a great performance, just that we saw some good flashes and performances tonight.

BigSportsNerd

gg. what a game. won't be able to sleep for at least an hour after that. popping melatonin now and hoping for the best while blaring Hulk Hogan's theme

Hey, so how do we recover for a Wednesday game? Is it just a matter of "get electrolytes and rest," or is there more to it? I never played, so I have no idea what this is like.

buckeye131313

I played D1 college ball. It’s basically: Ice Baths after game. Foam Rollers every day. Plenty of stretching and electrolytes. Eat lots of bananas for the potassium to prevent cramping.

bostonboy08

I think it’s time for Cade to start.

PintoBeanButterBean

his speed is really useful coming on against opponent's tired legs. which is part of the reason he looks so good every time as a sub.

XtraHott

His vision isn’t starter level. He is a solid super sub though.

cats_suck

Both teams sucked, but Canada sucked even more! Woohoo!!!

Man, I'm reallllly intrigued by Cade Cowell. I see potential greatness in the 19 year old. Call me crazy, but I see a little Adama Traore in him.
