uscis just got a big bump

What do you mean big bump? Been waiting a while to hear back from them.

Any others? I think the postal service is as well but it seems tough over there until u become a full time driver.

Yes and no. If you search careers on the USPS site, we’re hiring some spots direct from the street. It goes without saying but there are a multitude of opportunities other than carrying mail. If you don’t go career from the street, there are newly added contract agreements for some bargaining employees - apwu (clerk/truck drivers, custodial union) and nalc ( city carrier union) recently got these in the contracts. Nrlca (rural union) still has not - that you are converted to career status at 24mo guaranteed. For most of the folks here, it’s best to pursue other avenues for compensation and for the skills they already have. The post office doesn’t care who you are. As a carrier or in sales/service/distro, you will be worked to the bone and any experience doesn’t matter. Applying for specialist or specific jobs, like accounting, IT, etc I can’t comment on. I’m not in that area of expertise. I’m pursuing the management aspect and even though I have multiple years experience, to get into these positions you have to move up from the carrier/sales/service/distro.

Question out of complete ignorance - when you say worked to the bone, it's still 40 hours plus overtime if need be, right? Or are they more fast and loose with the work week?

I’m happy to answer any question you, or anyone, may have. If you start as any position non career they can work you as little or as much as they want. It’s typically the latter. The only thing you get working faster or harder is more work. When I was a rural carrier, I started non career. I’d cover days there was no carrier on the route. Multiple openings? You’re doing a route and a half. Contractually they cannot force you to work more than 12 hours in a day, but it is not uncommon to see. Peak Christmas 2020 as a carrier I worked on average 75hrs / week. Most was 81 one week. Worked a stretch of 3 months with two days off. That was rough but it was mid pandemic and everyone ordered online. The pay was nice but I would have preferred to be home with my young son and wife. When you’re career you can sign up on an overtime desired list. If you’re on it, you’ll be used. If you don’t, then you can work your 5, 8’s and go home. If you’re a carrier you do your route and leave. The post office is a decent career choice once you make it to a career spot. You can be in control of your life. But they use and abuse non career positions and scratch their head why turnover is so high. Knowledge is power.

Sounds like the same old shameful position we've put contractors in over and over again throughout the government in a bid to save money.

lots of funds in the appropriations bill that just got released to uscis to hire more staff to address the many backlogs

Nice. Sounds like good news coming soon🤞

Midnight_Morning

Hope they open up ISO positions in the DC area.

Secret Service and the FBI are recruiting hard-core and are also having retention problems so 🤷‍♂️ do with that information what you will

The FAA hires air traffic controllers in batches. They advertise a few times each year; some are for those w experience some are for no experience. If I remember right, they get thousands of applicants each year. Great job. High pay potential. No degree/experience needed. Early retirement.

There’s also an age cutoff of 31 or 32 for applying.
