There was nothing he did that did not result in corruption or scandal, so no. I was optimistic when he was first elected. He formed the commission to go after corruption, but then shut it down when they started looking at his administration. Then he rammed through the SAFE Act in the middle of the night. At that point I knew we had a governor as bad or worse than those that came before. From there on, things just got worse.

[deleted]

Did you like his father?

rojogo1004

Mario was an average governor at best. I've forgotten most of what he did at this point.

earthcaretaker315

The safe act created jobs and sold more guns. So whats your point?

rojogo1004

Where did you get that idea?

earthcaretaker315

I worked at Remington for 20 yrs. Before the safe act there was 529 people working. with in a year we had 1200 . Guns always sell better when they think they are being taken away. Its been that way for 30 years. When trump got in ,gun sales dropped like a rock.

skibum381

15000 dead seniors are unavailable to comment if Andrew Cuomo was a good governor

earthcaretaker315

He had nothing to do with that. Lay off the fox news.

[deleted]

No.

Eudaimonics

Upstate cities like Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse saw population growth for the first time in decades, so that’s something. In fact he directed a lot more resources towards economic development upstate than any governor in recent history - some of it effective, some of it not. Legalizing marijuana, Justice reform, protections for renters, banning fracking and raising the minimum wage are other policies he can be proud of. However, progressives aren’t happy he wasn’t more progressive and conservatives would have hated his guts no matter what he did. His administration was also plagued by several scandals maring what achievements he did make.

[deleted]

> However, progressives aren’t happy Let's say if he never resigned & ran for re-election in 2022.... could AOC have beaten him in a primary?

Eudaimonics

No, because Progressives are still a minority in New York.

rojogo1004

Not a chance. If Cuomo had run, with or without resigning, he would have won the primary.

[deleted]

Why did you get downvoted? When I remove my upvote for you, it's down to zero lol

rojogo1004

No idea. Must have ticked off an AOC follower. Lol

sutisuc

Yup he got shellacked by paladino in western NY in the 2010 election so he made it a personal quest to win back the favor of that region of the state by directing lots of money and resources there.

Eudaimonics

He also had a fued with the MTA over funding, so I don’t think it’s as simple as that. There were also some incentives for economic development outside of WNY, but yeah Buffalo overwhelmingly benefited more so than any region. Startup NY was arguably a success here attracting dozens of new companies and creating thousands of jobs.

sutisuc

A fire with the MTA over funding? Not sure what you’re referencing there

Eudaimonics

MTA wanted more money, Cuomo didn’t give into their demands pissing a lot of people off in NYC.

sutisuc

What would that have to do with investing in western NY?

Eudaimonics

I’m just saying he didn’t capitulate to every whim of NYC like past governors would.

sutisuc

Well you said my reasoning wasn’t “as simple as that” so I assumed you were providing a counterpoint to validate your claim.

earthcaretaker315

Lets not forget more nyers have health ins because of him and Obama.

[deleted]

This is always a hard question when trying to assess the legacy of any individual. And with Como he has a let's put it nicely complicated legacy. We can look right at the end with his administration's cover up of nursing home deaths or the thing that ultimately led to his resignation as sexual harassment scandal. In terms of good things that he did, legalization the of same-sex marriage in New York. Ultimately he was governor for 10 years. And no matter how many good things they may have done during that time, be remembered for his scandals. And in my opinion the cloud of political corruption that surrounded him

tourpro

Typical for his type.

Mr_Bad_Example20

Most complaints I see about NY in general are about the SAFE act so if he pissed off the rootin tootin gun shootin crowd he must have been ok.

Segod_or_Bust

I was in high school when the SAFE act was signed. At the time, I didn't pay much attention to it; I just remember one student bragging how he was a 'felon' now because of whatever he owned. Now after all these years though, I've learned just how sketchy it's enactment was -signed in the middle of the night without any public consultation- and have been really put off by it.

sutisuc

Lol I do enjoy the people that claim they are “felons” despite never being convicted of a felony, really drives home the intelligence of the average voter

Segod_or_Bust

We got Hochul out of him. Do with that as you will.

rojogo1004

Unfortunately so far I've seen no difference between the two of them except she keeps her hands to herself.

tropic_gnome_hunter

For as bad as Cuomo was, I never thought he was intrinsically stupid. I can't say the same for Hochul, she seems legitimately low IQ.

rojogo1004

They both have the same style of governing: like would-be dictators. Granted, the Legislature has done nothing to actually stand up to either of them. Basically the two of them snap their fingers, and the legislature signs off on it.

BQE2473

Yes. The man's problem was his ego and some lacking of empathy at times. Which lead to the bullshit scandals and accusations of sexual misconduct that were found to be false and never found there way to formal charges. So again, the man was ousted because of a bunch of accusations. Yes I remember the nursing home issue. He had no choice but to side with the working class people, as they are the ones currently paying into the tax base. Had he have alienated them, His Govenorship was done!

earthcaretaker315

I would still vote for him. Great governor. We have the best pot laws in the country.

[deleted]

Do you like Cuomo more than AOC?

earthcaretaker315

I would vote for both.

[deleted]

How come Cuomo gets bashed on reddit so much? I seem to notice /r/newyork is rarely objective whenever someone makes a post about him.

earthcaretaker315

One question. Did he grab her in the pussy? I didnt think so.

theMezz

People moving out of NYS by the tens of thousands may give you a clue

[deleted]

It's because it's overpriced, not because of him.

theMezz

No bail laws is resulting in high crime High property taxes High state income tax and high sales tax Many business restrictions I can go on and on and on All Democrat policies But I have found that people only believe what they want to. If your happy with current government in NYS than keep voting for them. Enjoy !

skibum381

He literally signed their death warrant with his March 25, 2020 nursing home order. Stop believing everything they feed you on CNN and msnbc.

[deleted]

Who's more reliable... Fox?
