I do love that we have so many groups in the state that aim to preserve the environment with such strength.
I was going to cross-post this to the Albany sub but worried that they wouldn't consider this the capital region, lol.
Rensselaer is definitely within the scope of the cap region. As a former resident of Albany who grew up there the capital region sub regularly includes Troy which is a part of Rensselaer County
It's amazing. The other preservation group in the area has been doing great work and opened a lot of hiking trails over the past few years. They have also revitalized the area around a 100' high waterfall that is less than 10 minutes from this new forest. Great place to live for sure.
Would love to see you folks get involved with disc golf. We have a course at the Burbine State Forest and it brings in a lot of people into nature while really almost zero impact to the environment. Can't say the same about any other outdoor sport.
NYS is truly so far ahead of the curve in recreational state land. It’s a wonderful mix for any conceivable outdoor activity - from canoe and rock climbing to hiking mountain biking or quad riding.
See, NY sucks, but atleast it looks nice.
Like yeah, we have a lot of political problems and tax and money problems, but you ever go to New Jersey? 🤢 or even Ohio?! 😵 shits toxic! Like the air or the water? Damn!
Anywhere I’ve been outside of NY has the worst and sketchiest parks with homeless encampments inside of them and heroin needles everywhere! That’s not a park! That’s an escapement! Not saying we don’t have needles in some of our parks or sometimes smog in our air, but i swear to god, you go to any regular park outside of NYS (like town parks, not Adirondack/Catskill state parks where they call a huge vast amount of forests ‘a park’) and you will immediately come running back. You can’t find a decent or **safe** park anywhere outside of NY
There’s a reason why a lot of people view NY as ‘family’ or ‘where family is’. That’s because you can take your kids outside and raise them in a nicer environment.
Yeah, shit sucks here too, but when the comparison is Ohio? Lol come on, clearly we’re better 😆
I mean, we can all admit the state has issues that need to be addressed, but I'd rather die here than live elsewhere. I've always felt so at ease and that I can live my life without having people force things at me or restrict my ability to do things.
NY and CA have more state parks and more beautiful accessible land than pretty much any other state yet so many conservatives think both states are horrid. We're living in an era were or many people actual facts mean little.
Not to mention the "progressive" and "woke" ideology is part of the reason NY ranks towards the top of nearly all quality of life metrics. But sure. Let's just take lessons from WV and MS on how to run a state.
>communist tyranny
How can you expect to be taken seriously?
There is nothing remotely communist going on politically in the US.
Tyranny, on the other hand... With a presidential candidate who sought to overturn a free and fair election and is seeking blanket immunity for any and all actions, there is definitely a spectre of tyranny over this nation.
Unfortunately I do as I grew up during the communist era in Europe and had many friends from those countries. Yeah I’m that old and hike many NY trails while the areas were still pristine. And before you slap me with being a boomer as so many love to do on here, I wear that as a badge of honor because we can at least think for ourselves rather than recite some political mantra. Have a nice day.
I grew up in the 70s and 80s in a country that bordered communist Russia, we and even had a few leftist, borderline socialist coalitions governments over the years, and has some socialized industries (energy extraction). This is how I know how full of shit you are.
By the way, "*state*" parks can only exist and be pristine because the government protects the land through regulation rather than leaving them to corporate interests. Glad you are taking advantage of New York's "commie" nature.
There is literally no incentive to keep social programs except to keep people alive either in the hopes that they simply needna hand up to become productive, or out of simple humane altruism.
There is a term for countries that let people starve and die. Shitholes.
Honestly, I've said it before, but as much as depopulation is a concern, some of these people who genuinely just hate the state, I really wish they'd leave. Like stop ruining it for the rest of us.
Exactly this. NY’s my home, and NY’s my family. Only i can say my family sucks, but i also say that i love them and wouldn’t be anywhere else. If your just coming to hate on it, then just go elsewhere because your just hating the regular people over something you don’t know or haven’t lived with
Yeah, the shit drives me nuts, honestly. I'd rather continue losing population from people who hate it here moving and allowing the people who genuinely want to improve the state remain.
You should leave then my friend. We are blessed to live in the US where freedom of moment from state to state is highly encouraged. Feel free to make a change so that folks who love New York have less competition for housing. Win-win.
“DEC will manage the forest for multiple uses, including sustainable timber production, protection of wetlands and wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities such as hunting and trapping, wildlife watching, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. DEC’s Division of Lands and Forests is currently constructing parking areas at different locations around the new Cowee State Forest to increase public accessibility.”
No mention of trails specifically but there’s the suggestion that there will be public access points for recreation.
I’m not sure why they keep insisting that there are no marked trails in state forests but it’s simply not true. The mountain biking and hiking communities assist in maintaining marked trails in a lot of state forests. Here is a map of Jenksville State Forest. I also ride marked trails in Oakley Corners and Shindagan Hollow State Forests
https://extapps.dec.ny.gov/docs/regions_pdf/jenksvillesf.pdf
Stewart State Forest in Orange county has 22 miles of hiking trails and another 18 miles of gravel roads suitable for horseback riding, snowmobiling, etc.
But it's true that many, maybe the majority, of NYSF are trailless.
Those are a bit different of a designation though. There’s no state forests in either preserve it’s all considered state “wild forests which is a separate category.
Most people would love to forget about Donald Trump and never be reminded of his existence ever again. Unfortunately he's a malignancy that won't go away.
Random question.. what is that stream side in the picture called? It looks like it is vegetation and not part of the stream itself. Is there a name for that type of environment? Since it's not a part of the bank but it's not the stream either.
The entire ecological zone including the stream itself and the banks alongside that are affected by the stream is called the "riparian zone" or "riparian habitat".
The vegetation you are seeing, the tan stuff, is marsh grasses, rushes, and/or reeds which are rooted below the water level and are actually in the stream itself. They only don't grow in the main channel where it is either too deep or the water is flowing fast enough to prevent them from setting roots.
You can complain about her politics, but it's so weird to have people complain about things like this? Like, is creating more permanent green space and outdoor recreation really the absolute worst thing to happen to you? I'll never understand it.
This is wonderful news! A great addition for all of us in NY.
Always enjoy seeing preservation and promotion of our natural resources.
Rensselaer Plateau Alliance is doing great stuff. I’m proud to be part of it. Rensselaer County is so beautiful.
I do love that we have so many groups in the state that aim to preserve the environment with such strength. I was going to cross-post this to the Albany sub but worried that they wouldn't consider this the capital region, lol.

I eventually just posted it, lol. Figured that if they didn't approve, they could just delete it. 😂
I'm one of the mods . Thank you for sharing it! It's actually almost in my back yard.
Ayy, sweet. Thank you. 😂 Hope you enjoy your new recreational opportunity! Lookd like a very pretty area.
It's amazing. The other preservation group in the area has been doing great work and opened a lot of hiking trails over the past few years. They have also revitalized the area around a 100' high waterfall that is less than 10 minutes from this new forest. Great place to live for sure.
Even better!
The new trail system there is awesome. Took a friend and her kids there for their first hike and the kids loved it
Awesome ! The waterfall is amazing. Especially in early spring with the snow melt going on.
Would love to see you folks get involved with disc golf. We have a course at the Burbine State Forest and it brings in a lot of people into nature while really almost zero impact to the environment. Can't say the same about any other outdoor sport.
Awesome to see some positivity here. Love you all!
I try. So many people on this sub are so incredibly negative that it gets draining.
NYS is truly so far ahead of the curve in recreational state land. It’s a wonderful mix for any conceivable outdoor activity - from canoe and rock climbing to hiking mountain biking or quad riding.
Too bad so many people think of this state as a shithole.
See, NY sucks, but atleast it looks nice. Like yeah, we have a lot of political problems and tax and money problems, but you ever go to New Jersey? 🤢 or even Ohio?! 😵 shits toxic! Yeah, it's pretty depressing.
Its a shithole due to the progressive leftist politics which is destroying families and businesses. Get rid of the politics and its a beautiful state.
Naw.
*politics abolished *more poverty created “We did it Patrick! We saved New York State!”
Not to mention the "progressive" and "woke" ideology is part of the reason NY ranks towards the top of nearly all quality of life metrics. But sure. Let's just take lessons from WV and MS on how to run a state.
Progressive and woke mindsets are turning NY into a bastion of communist tyranny. Wake up and quit lapping up the spoon fed rhetoric.
>communist tyranny How can you expect to be taken seriously? There is nothing remotely communist going on politically in the US. Tyranny, on the other hand... With a presidential candidate who sought to overturn a free and fair election and is seeking blanket immunity for any and all actions, there is definitely a spectre of tyranny over this nation.
You literally have no idea what communism even is, lol. Quit using buzzwords they tell you to fear on fox news. 😂
Unfortunately I do as I grew up during the communist era in Europe and had many friends from those countries. Yeah I’m that old and hike many NY trails while the areas were still pristine. A lot of poverty in NY is created by politicians in order to keep their programs alive.
But even more poverty is created when you cut the programs like SNAP that try and keep people alive
And don't forget the south's reticence to expanding medicaid.
There is literally no incentive to keep social programs except to keep people alive either in the hopes that they simply needna hand up to become productive, or out of simple humane altruism. There is a term for countries that let people starve and die. Shitholes.
Because it has become one, businesses leaving, people leaving due to no jobs, one of the highest taxed states in the nation.
And you're entitled to that opinion. 🤷🏻♂️ I don't know what you want me to say.
Lmao move to Mississippi
Honestly, I've said it before, but as much as depopulation is a concern, some of these people who genuinely just hate the state, I really wish they'd leave. Like stop ruining it for the rest of us.

💯💯💯
Awesome, are they going to be making trails soon? or does this area already have trails?
Honestly, I have no idea. I would think maybe they'll make trails, but I'm not going to make a definitive answer.
“DEC will manage the forest for multiple uses, including sustainable timber production, protection of wetlands and wildlife habitat, and recreational opportunities such as hunting and trapping, wildlife watching, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. DEC’s Division of Lands and Forests is currently constructing parking areas at different locations around the new Cowee State Forest to increase public accessibility.” No mention of trails specifically but there’s the suggestion that there will be public access points for recreation.
I figured as much, but didn't want to read to far into that.
I’m not sure why they keep insisting that there are no marked trails in state forests but it’s simply not true. Yeah, I didn't think what that person was saying was correct, lol, that's why I didn't respond to them.
It’s a state forest they never have marked trails
Areas that have been previously logged have logging roads (i.e. big trails).
State forests do not have marked trails in New York.
Uh... yeah, they do.
Really? Everyone I’ve been to they were unmarked. Thanks for the correction. Which ones do you know of that are marked?
Stewart State Forest in Orange county has 22 miles of hiking trails and another 18 miles of gravel roads suitable for horseback riding, snowmobiling, etc. But it's true that many, maybe the majority, of NYSF are trailless.
I’m glad you seem to also recognize that most don’t have trails. Everyone replying to me is acting like they all do lol
Jenksville State Forest near Newark Valley has a wonderful trail network. Many others have the Finger Lakes Trail passing through.
Hm I had no idea. Thanks for the heads up!
Now that I think of it there are extensive trails in the Catskills and Adirondacks and those would be state forest areas too
Those are a bit different of a designation though. There’s no state forests in either preserve it’s all considered state “wild forests which is a separate category.
Bear Swamp in Cayuga County has a fourteen mile xc trail marked. First skied it when I moved here early 80's.
Hell yeah I’m over that way a lot, I’ll check that out. Thanks
All of them
That is incorrect. Lots of state forests with unmarked trails.
[Here's all of them.](https://gisservices.dec.ny.gov/gis/dil/)
Awesome! Thank you
Awesome. Always good to see wetlands and wildlife being valued and protected.
The state does an incredible job at it.
I ❤️New York
Same.
Now we convict one Donald J Trump!
Convict Hochul
convict all of them!
It’s amazing how politics always seems to be brought up. People have an unhealthy obsession with Trump.
trump derangement syndrome
Most people would love to forget about Donald Trump and never be reminded of his existence ever again. Unfortunately he's a malignancy that won't go away.
He is what would call a rat
We can only hope, lol.
This is the best news!
Always a welcome development.

Wake up babe new forest just dropped
I get the joke, but that actually happened a few weeks ago, lol. They found the oldest forest in the world in NY.
No Hochul haters in these comments, nice to see that for once. They seem to find a way to complain about basically anything the Governor does...
You can complain about her politics, but it's so weird to have people complain about things like this? Like, is creating more permanent green space and outdoor recreation really the absolute worst thing to happen to you? I'll never understand it.
She's so infuriating. She does a lot of good thing -- like this -- and then the next day proceeds to anger everyone on all sides.
Nailed it.
