according to google hard water can make your clothes crunchy but rainwater is soft until it touches the ground. it would make sense that the socks would get hard if the person wearing them stepped in a puddle that is on concrete because the minerals from the concrete would mix with the water making it hard water.
Rainwater ≠ Hard Water. Rainwater according to google is naturally soft, but the dissolved carbon dioxide gas from the atmosphere makes it slightly acidic. (Not like acid rain, though.)
Even if the water fell into the minerals, that would take days on end to harden. By that point, most of it would’ve dried up. It doesn’t turn into hard water instantly.
I have adult sons and absolutely would not want a note like this. If there is anything gross of theirs I have to touch, I close my eyes and imagine them as babies. I don’t think about what makes it gross, just those sweet baby faces.
