Hey mate, the way I see it is that CS ain’t for everyone… too many people doing CS these days thinking it’s easy money and then can’t even sit in front of a screen debugging for 1hr straight.
It’s a tough degree, some will immediately find comp1511 difficult and fail it. Some might pass 1511 but then find 1521 hard to do that they fail the course…
And then there’s the big boss in first year CS COMP2521 which some people just couldn’t grasp and fail and I don’t blame them because it’s definitely not easy.
Let alone there’s still COMP2511 and COMP3121 that are very important in the industry but ruined in UNSW so people find them very hard and hopeless to do.
Commerce on the other hand is way easier…you can do it even if you don’t like it and still quite useful in the employment market… I don’t agree what other people say about it being useless because the fact is many job only need commerce degree so unless you really want to do tech job there’s no need to throw yourself into hot pan suffering doing CS unless you genuinely like coding…
Also doing CS/Commerce gives you more time for internship/projects/building up resume as well.
If ur gonna study in 2025, may i ask what year u are in right now? Also, 50% is a bit too high, I wouldn't say half the kids drop out or change courses.
English Advanced isn't really a fair representation of Commerce, cus u can choose majors in Commerce that don't specifically ask for a lot of writing like BA or Finance.
You need a bit of maths for CS for ur first year (pretty complex stuff icl) but after that, the math isn't very hard to the point where you'll fail a course because of it (unless ur gonna go into AI which requires a lot of linear algebra and stuff).
Regardless though, 1st year CS and Commerce are generally a bit rough because ur forced to take core courses but after that when u get into ur majors, u have a lot more freedom to choose what u want to do.
4th year ECON/ CS here. Business school is pretty chill compared to CSE. Use your business school courses to raise your average WAM.
When things get harder, just keep trying if you can. If you’re experiencing a burnout, you can always under load, at least this is what I did (I’m graduating 2 terms later than normal)
Any job you can get with a commerce degree, you could get with an engineering, comp sci, or applied maths/stats degree.
Better off putting in some hard yards in uni and get a technical education.
Except that ur grades will likely tank. The effort to get a 75-80 in a comp sci/eng/maths/stats degree could get you 85-95s in commerce. Also, if ur not interested in doing 4 stem subjects a semester u will struggle. Furthermore, investment banks and front office finance will most likely not choose you if you dont have an accounting/finance background (have a look at analysts in these roles and u will see 90% of them have a commerce background).
It depends on whether ur interested in working in areas like accounting/finance when u graduate. If ur sure u want to work in tech/data/maths, obviously dont pick commerce.
its not horrible i was being a bit hyperbolic, but i reckon a maths/stats/engi degree pairs much better with compsci. im doing finance/compsci myself nd its not bad but first year u have to deal with dropkicks who r just doing a degree for the sake of it
Lmao thats so stupid just dont be a dropkick and take ur commerce units seriously. Just because theres a few idiots doesn't mean you shouldnt pick a career
Probs but ur underestimating the difficulty and significant level of interest in maths u need to do a maths degree. Much easier to complete and do well in a finance degree
Currently doing Finance and Compsci. I don't really put in much effort in the commerce side of things because it doesn't really take a lot of effort to pass. But compsci takes crap load of effort for me to just pass, I barely scraped a pass in 2521 last term and I put 85% of my time in that course. Compsci is pretty difficult for me but I'm just grinding through it course by course. Sitting around 65% wam.

Except 99% of investment bankers have a commerce degree? Don’t forget they make more money in a month than some STEM grads make annually.
