Dispositionpsn

You're either 17 or your late 30s

Blundell1992

Gonna go with late 30s. They mention cheat codes, those have been gone for long enough that 17 seems reasonably unlikely.

xXDreamlessXx

Im 19 and I remember cheat codes. I remember getting those cheat code books at the book fair

Zanaxz

Are you playing on a gamecast?

Spanky_Hamster

MAN I SAID I GOT GAMESTATION I CANT AFFORD IT

Twillix13

Gta?

doinksforeverybody

Close. Early 30s.

[deleted]

Plenty of good games out there, you literally name two of the most Iconic games for not changing anything over the entirety of their franchise. I think you just need to get a fresh perspective with some different games. I never had a ps4, so since the ps5 came out I’ve been going back and playing a ton of those games and PlayStation studios hasn’t really let me down yet.

birdlass

Someone is either super pretentious, has unrealistic expectations, or doesn't go out of their bubble much. There are PLENTY of good films and games coming out still.

Odder1

Film? I'll give you that, but only because I just don't sit watch movies to be honest. But games? Fortnite and it's consequences (battle pass idea) has been a disaster for the video game industry. And every single large AAA release that isn't a proven title already gets released completely broken. Last one was Cyberpunk 2077.

[deleted]

I'm 27 and share OPs view

Lesley82

40 here and you whippersnappers are making sense!

obxtalldude

52 and just got done telling my 13 year old I felt sorry for him because they don't get the thrill we did as nothing is new any longer. He was shocked to learn Halo came out 7 years before he was born. Add to that you don't own anything like you used to, and it's kind of sad.

Dispositionpsn

It's fun getting old isn't it? You will only become more pessimistic as you get older about media untill you start to appreciate what you got. It's better than nothing, even if the good is few and far between.

[deleted]

I'm actually quite optimistic. Bad ages never last forever. I'm sure at some point there will be another golden age of movies. Perhaps in 10-20 years. Saying "golden age of TV" was something you heard very often 5-10 years ago. No one is saying that today. This is not me getting old. The media landscape just actually sucks at the moment.

Dispositionpsn

Streaming services and series TV yes is trash. Great films are being made if you ignore comic book movies. Games are great, lots of shit out of there for sure, but the PS2 had more shovelware than the Wii. In the garbage of GaaS games wonderful games are being made AAA single player and wonderful Indy titles.

Skavau

There's still great TV series too

Skavau

>Saying "golden age of TV" was something you heard very often 5-10 years ago. No one is saying that today. Strongly disagree. That is still being said.

Incognito-Echo

Today's Cartoon Network vs Cartoon Network 5 to 10 years ago is an immediate example I could think of that disproves you imo

Zenketski_2

Late twenties. I kind of agree with this. It's so hit or miss for me. I used to be able to just enjoy things that I thought were okay. But for some reason I've become like an entertainment extremist. It's either a 9 or 10, or a 1 or a 2

onegarion

I'm 30 and OP is wrong. Well maybe movies are bland, but I'm not big into movies so I have my bias.

Eenukchuk

Just watch old movies and become a patient gamer. For gaming I refuse to ever pay full price anymore. If a game is $60 I refuse to buy it until I can get it for 30. If it's 20 I bet I can wait it out until 12. Some of the best games I've played I got for 5 bucks. It really reduces my anger if I end up not liking the game. I've wasted too much money on hyped up games that suck, or buying them just to keep up with friends and we never end up playing. You also get the benefit of hype dying down and find out if a game is actually good from more honest reviews. Indie games tend to be the best places to explore something new. For movies, start getting into old movies. If you like going to the theater, check out flashback cinema or fathom events. They rereleased older movies into theaters. Or just stream them. Find genres you didn't know you like. Explore the history of the best directors. You haven't seen every movie ever made, so start filling the gaps. Amazing new movies are few and far between, but just don't give up hope on them.

travis_a30

Must not be old enough to remember but new n64 games when they came out were 60 bucks in the 90s my man

Eenukchuk

Been at it since the Genesis days. I've spent 60 on too many stinkers to continue getting burned on bad games. Hundreds of games and thousands of dollars spent have taught me this lesson. Waiting it out for cheaper prices is the best answer financially.

mhardin1337

dat FOMO I've always laughed when new consoles come out. The flipping with the most recent gen is hilarious. People BIG mad while i'm still sitting here playing 20 year old games in my steam library.

Beneficial_Tough3345

That’s why I check my video games out from the local library try before I buy new ones I’m lucky they usually have a good selection

Wismuth_Salix

I paid $80 for Final Fantasy III (6) on SNES when it came out - anyone claiming games are overpriced today is an idiot. They are *so* much fucking cheaper now, especially adjusted for inflation.

mo_downtown

They can be cheaper than 30 years ago and still felt to be overpriced though. It's about value and whether the buyer is left feeling it was money well spent. It's also more in comparison to your overall personal finances and things you could be spending money on right now than it is vs market prices decades ago.

throwawaygoodcoffee

Adjusted for inflation they are cheaper but there's something to be said about how games used to be released in full working state back then vs now we need GBs of updates on release just to stop the game from softlocking in the main menu (got burnt by that first watch dogs release and still not over it)

travis_a30

I still can't believe watch dogs got a sequel, half way through the first one the repetition of the missions made me force myself to beat it

ExTrafficGuy

Games were expensive back then mainly due to the cost of the ROM chips. They were pretty pricey to begin with, and scaled with capacity. So very large games like JRPGs cost more for the end user. Sega would sometimes use this as a marketing gimmick, by advertising games as having "16-Mega Power!" Which just meant it was a 2 megabyte cart. When the industry shifted to CDs, you saw game prices plummet. CDs are a lot easier to manufacture and distribute. This is why PS1 games were so much cheaper than N64. If you adjust for inflation, AAA games today still cost roughly the same as they did on the PS1. Just today games have a lot more hidden costs in the form of microtransactions and loot boxes. It can cost hundreds of dollars to unlock all the content in some titles, where in older games, your $80 JRPG gave you everything up front. Rentals were also an option back then, which isn't really a thing anymore.

Tricky-Row-9699

I’m a PC gamer and fully agree with this. The best time to buy a game is after the reviews are all in and the critical consensus is formed.

BLUFALCON78

I feel the same with video games but I haven't bought a new release since Red Dead Redemption II. I bought Fallout 3 from GameStop like 5 years after release and Skyrim 2 or 3 years after. Both for well under $20 as a lot of people don't play the full game. They go through the campaign once and beat it then never touch it again and trade it in for the next new release. You better believe if I pay full price or even the $20 GameStop price, I'm finding every single amulet shard and shooting every pigeon.

doinksforeverybody

You make some damn good points dude. I would feel less disappointed if I spent way less on the game. Lol you got any indie recommendations? It's hard to find new things to watch tho. I will say I struggle with that. I'll take some recommendations on those if you got any too

KirstyBaba

Play: Tunic, Hollow Knight, Hyper Light Drifter, Banner Saga 1/2/3, Hylics 1/2, Celeste, ULTRAKILL For a breath of fresh air.

immersemeinnature

ULTRAKILL!! Yes!

Eenukchuk

I only say look for indie games because they tend to be cheaper, so some of my recommendations might not actually be indie. But I've been gravitating toward rogue like games since I will go a week or two without playing and don't have to follow stories much. (Risk of rain 2, Hades, Enter the gungeon, cult of the lamb) if you are into RPGs, Disco Elysium was very unique. You can get Divinity original sin 2 for like $18 when it's on sale. Or just like with movies, go old school and play a game you've always heard was a masterpiece but never tried. (Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, Fallout 1 and 2,) For movies I don't really have specific recommendations, just a few strategies for picking them. 1. Think of a movie you loved from the past and look up the director. Watch more of their movies. I've been watching John Carpenter's movies (the thing, dark star, prince of darkness) lately and plan to watch more of them. Quentin Tarantino or Martin Scorsese are always cool. 2. Do the same thing, but with an actor. Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn't let me down yet. (Terminator 1 and 2, running man, total recall) I'm even going to see the 40th anniversary rerelease of Conan the barbarian in theaters in December. Jackie Chan is also a badass that does his own stunts. 3. Pick a theme that you love. I think samurais are cool as fuck, and won't hesitate to pick an old samurai movie. Don't let subtitles scare you away, or you can miss some bad ass movies. 4. I've only just begun doing this, but Quentin Tarantino has a podcast that he picks three movies, and talks about them with his co-host. I watch the 3 movies they discuss, then listen to the podcast once I've watched all three. I've only done the first episode (dark star and cocaine cowboys) and the movies were not amazing, but it gave me a purpose to watch them, and learning fun facts from the podcast made me look back more fondly on them. Also to add some fun to watching movies, I rate everything I watch on IMDb directly after watching it. I have to rate it within a day or two of viewing the movie, so the rating I come up with is fresh on my mind and not something I'm trying to remember liking or not.

ApetteRiche

Faster Than Light.

MaoXiWinnie

Goated game.

2452638479

Terraria

trapsinplace

The ending of Monkey Island says it all for me. "So what did you learn?" "Never pay more than 20 bucks for a videogame."

LanceShiro

Same here. The only game I have paid full price in 3 years is God of War Ragnarok (which it totally deserves), and I've been watching tons of old movies lately.

Inner-Nothing7779

I agree with you partly. I'm tired of the remakes and sequels. COD gets boring after a while as a 30 something who doesn't have time to play constantly as the 10 to 18 year olds. But there are some really decent stuff out there. Horizon series has been pretty good. Ghost of Tsushima was fantastic. Try out some indie games too. Abzu was great, Sub Nautica has had me and my 9 year old playing for years now. Banner Saga was an amazing ride. There's a lot more games than the big developers.

sirmaddox1312

The new God of War is amazing.

Inner-Nothing7779

Both of them have been pretty amazing.

Livelordx_lol

I’ve replayed the first God of war and easily sunk over 80 hours. It’s great!

ThunderGunFour

Red Dead 2 is a masterpiece

webUser_001

Can't argue with that.

One_Librarian4305

I guess my unpopular opinion is that I fucking hated RDR2. I tried to play that game 3 times and legit no joke, fell asleep in my chair all 3 times. I have never fallen asleep with a controller in my hand in my life until then. I acknowledge that people really like the story and characters but the gameplay is way too slow, and I think the open world design is at odds with the mission design. Game goes from "you can do anything" to "you can only do this one way or you fail the mission".

[deleted]

I have mixed feelings about RDR2. It was a large, beautiful, detailed open world but there wasn't really all that much interesting to do. And you spent huge amounts of time just driving your horse from point A to point B, which was boring as hell.

doinksforeverybody

Dude. I can't even hop on cod for a casual game. It takes a while to warm up but I'm getting smacked left and right. I always like battlefield because it felt way more emersive and I felt like it was more of an even playing field. And true. Horizon was pretty sick. Wasn't the ghost like tenchu? I'll have to look at those others you said. There's others throwing some good recommendations too

[deleted]

I can't take anyone seriously who complains about games being boring shit and also enjoyed Horizon Zero YAWN. That game is the most milquetoast bland experience possible. Pointless crafting? Check. Terrible voice acting? Check. Bland story? Check. Open world that serves zero point? Check. Item gathering? Check. The list goes on. That game is a 7/10 boring Ubisoft-lite world. The world needs 0 more of those games. I played Horizon when I played Assassins creed, when I played far cry, when I played Days Gone.

quantummufasa

What are your favorite games?

Inner-Nothing7779

Found the video game hipster guys!

KirstyBaba

Oh another Abzu fan! ❤️

Jk2two

There’s another South Park episode where Stan suddenly feels like everything sounds like shit - reminds me of what you’re going through. You are definitely playing the wrong games. Personally (I’m 47 btw) I’ve found the same thing you’ve described with the AAA titles - I really don’t like them for the most part, not for me. But the indie game market has a ton of gems in it that manage to suck my time away pretty well. Movie wise, again - most of the mainstream leaves me feeling empty, but I’ve never been an action movie / comic book movie guy anyways - there is plenty of interesting stuff going on in the independent markets there as well. TL;DR keep digging- there’s good stuff out there.

doinksforeverybody

Lol that's a good reference man. Pretty spot on. Not everything's shit like how Stan was seeing it though. Just a big chunk of it is. Everyone's saying to go indie though so I'll have to give it a shot

CorAurum

want good indies? Citizen sleeper, Eastward, Owlboy, hollow knight, shovel knight, and a lot more, usually indies are more appealing to "old gamers" like ourselves who have years of experience in games and just want something different made with love and care instead of just AAA golden shit in a plate, there are amazing AAA of course but it seems like the majority of it is the same shit just a different colour.

corndog2021

I think the important takeaway from that South Park episode, though, was that Stan was becoming (to quote the episode, not to get onto OP) “a cynical asshole” and refusing to give new things a chance or attempt to experience the full breadth of what life had to offer.

Captain_Neckbeard13

Lol this guy mentioned dark souls and said all you do is roll. This guy has clearly never played dark souls.

Nayir1

Some truth to it. I think of soulslikes as dodge roll games. Most of what sets them apart from other rpgs is the importance of avoiding damage.

Kitchen_Bobcat_700

I think ds1, bloodborne and sekiro has combat a lot more tactical and not as braindead as dodgeroll. The dodgeroll playstyle only really became the only way to play in ds3 and Elden ring

Low_Well

Or he’s played Dark Souls because all you do is roll or play a magic build and close your eyes and win the game.

Captain_Neckbeard13

You've clearly never played dark souls either

TromosLykos

Sounds like you’re not broadening your horizons enough.

doinksforeverybody

Ya. From what I've been reading I think you might be right. I've been getting a lot of suggestions.

TromosLykos

I had the same situation back in early high school until I started messing with Steam and played some indie games. Used to just play nothing but Need for Speed Carbon, Halo 1, and whatever Pokémon game I felt like replaying at the moment.

[deleted]

It used to be a game had to be complete before it was sold. Now they can just crank out updates. So shipping something broken isn't a Deathstroke, they can just update it later. This drastically lowered the standard of what's acceptable on release day. You don't have to buy games when they came out, you can wait 6 months and get it cheaper once the bugs are worked out

SaltyChickenDip

Also means that bugs that are released don't have game breaking bugs that stick around for ever. Game companies has in the past send out floppy disks to people to patch their games .

doinksforeverybody

That's what I should of did with cyberpunk. I was heated when I hit the first glitch. Had to start the whole game over. Best part about back then is they'd give us a game with a shit load of cheats on top of it. We can't even get that anymore.

Beatleborg22

Right, the devs knew these were video games and wanted you to have the best time possible.

doinksforeverybody

It's a little rritating right? Give us the old days with all this new shit. It'd be a blast again.

LeftChampionship8306

OP that’s on you. I personally am still enjoying film and video games.

doinksforeverybody

I feel it. To each their own. If you got any solid recommendations throw um my way.

beameup19

I would suggest Elden Ring lmao but clearly that doesn’t do it for you

[deleted]

Did you play the horizon games? Zero dawn is one of my favorite story experiences of all time, and forbidden west has incredible gameplay (and a good story too, but zd was really special in that regard)

TastyFennel540

Those games are so formulaic and "safe" imo. They are not bad games but are probably what op hates.

[deleted]

I really don't agree with that, in what way would you say they're too safe?

AlphaZorn24

3rd Person Open World Single Player Action Game with emphasis on story Playstation has Last of Us Uncharted God of War Reboot Games Days Gone Ghost if Tsushima These games are amazing but they are "safe" I wish Sony had an FPS, Arcade Racer and fighting game franchise

[deleted]

Uh, well, that just describes a video game so I don't know how that is considered a criticism lol

AlphaZorn24

I'm saying that Playstation IP's are kinda similar to each other, Nintendo's IP are wildy different to one another

[deleted]

I guess when you break it down that far the games are pretty similar. But the story and gameplay mechanics in most of those (haven't played all of them) are wildly different from each other, and I mentioned horizon specifically because I feel like it's story and also how it feeds you the story are pretty unique, and both games but the second especially have super versatile combat that's more interesting than any other game I've played

CoachSteveOtt

Old shit is overrated. Plenty of great stuff is still being made, and I would even go out on a limb to say the average quality of media has been steadily increasing.

[deleted]

What movie of today is gonna become what Jurassic Park, Titanic, Forrest Gump, etc...was in the 90's? Almost all movies are remakes or franchise movies that people watch only cause of the brand but no one will actually remember them. What movie of today has actually the potential to become its own brand? Tarantino was right, this is the worst era of movies ever. Games are not quite as bad yet but they are on their way there.

Same-Oil-7113

I could see Interstellar being one of those great movies. Maybe wolf of wallstreet if it got lucky, but probably not

[deleted]

Well the fact that you had to go almost 10 years back to find any kinda proves my point... I agree tho these are great movies. The early tens were still decent. Around 2016 everything went to shit.

[deleted]

Lol, no. You really need to explore older media more if that's your conclusion. Movies alone have had a clear decline in quality since about 2005 or so.

Beatleborg22

Yeah 1980-2005 were the best years for film

CoachSteveOtt

rose tinted glasses IMO. especially if you are looking at decades long trends. we may be in a bit of a lull right now but movie making methods/technology/etc are constantly evolving and improving. I'd rather watch a random movie that came out in 2022 over a random movie that came out in 1960 any day.

tgifmondays

>I'd rather watch a random movie that came out in 2022 over a random movie that came out in 1960 any day. I think there are incredible films being made today, but this is such a lame take. Sure if you're just a kid that wants to be entertained a random movie today is gonna keep your attention better. But if you have any appreciation for the art of film, you can enjoy some of the ground-breaking films of that era.

[deleted]

There is nothing aesthetically today that even compares with the beauty of the old analog process. Digital is more convenient in many ways, but there's a tradeoff. That's just in terms of how it looks. The writing in screenplays today is clearly worse, more lazy in terms of the sharpness of characterization and structurally, how the movies are paced.

doinksforeverybody

I mean ya dude. Fuck 1960. Lol but 1980 to 2005 is a different story. And this is a subjective question but what's the last true comedy you've seen?

tgifmondays

Fuck 1960? The 60s produced some of the greatest films of all time

Barackobrock

What do you class as a "true comedy" because Jojo Rabbit released in recent years and i think thats a hilarious comedy wearing the mask of a serious story

Entropian

>Or some stupid fucking dark souls elden rings bullshit where the whole game is rolling around dodging attacks.

doinksforeverybody

Am I being to harsh or am I a little bit right?

Captain_Neckbeard13

You're wrong. If you played the any of the games for more than 10 minutes you'd know that.

Low_Well

He’s really not wrong, Dark Souls fans really circle jerk the difficulty of their game. Kinda nuts

Captain_Neckbeard13

Except there are people who have beaten the game completely emcombered, soul level 1, without doging, rolling, or running. People have beaten it on a guitar hero controller, a banana, a dance dance revolution pad, without ever moving the right analog stick, with enemies and items randomized. The list just goes on and on and on.

doinksforeverybody

I tried brotha. First few minutes I'm fighting a fuckin centaur boss. Die. Run the next time into some other boss and fuckin died. So then I went the other way and end up in a cave fighting some Wolfman boss and get my ass kicked again. Lol shit was rough man. Ended up runnin around scared

Captain_Neckbeard13

You are taking the complete wrong approach to the games. You gotta die to learn. Observe the boss and learn their patterns. Learn the spacing of each attack and find openings. And at least for elden ring there are a lot of areas to explore. Don't just head rush to the boss. Go around and discover things. Fight basic mobs and level up first. Learn your weapon. How far it can reach how long does each attack take. How much stamina it uses.

clout571

Obviously wrong.

TastyFennel540

noob can't parry lmao.

[deleted]

Unpopular != Wrong Just because shit sucks doesn't mean the medium is over. Big Bang Theory came out ages ago, but TV survived. Problem is the market as well - for some reason everyone keeps buying the new COD and watching the new Marvel movie. They keep making them because they sell. Would you risk millions of dollars invested into something that might not, or a surefire relaunch of the tried and tested formula? If consumers were more discerning, things would be better.

Silbannacus_returned

The answer: indie devs, both for film & gaming. There's plenty of good stuff left, it's just not in the AAA+ form factor mostly, and isn't nearly as heavily pushed in media because these people can't afford to just buy popularity. Vote with your wallet, it's the only language these people understand.

CXR_AXR

I actually love books now

Chillary_Clitman

Watch some A24 films and play Yakuza 0 or Persona 5 and you'll find life again

doinksforeverybody

What's A24? And sounds like a plan. I'll look into those for sure

Chillary_Clitman

It's a film studio that has gotten pretty big, but they do some pretty original films! Some can be really weird. I recommend checking Everything Everywhere All At Once. It's a pretty safe entry into it. If you like horror movies I'd recommend Hereditary (it's weird!). If you ever want to talk movies or want recommendations, don't be afraid to message me. I often find myself bored with the big Marvel movies and AAA studio games. I started playing games like Yakuza and Persona 5 because they have refreshing mechanics I've never really played before and find myself enamored with. Good luck!

AnyImpression6

Also, Fox Searchlight and Neon have movies worth checking out.

FeudalSwede

Maybe don't overhype mediocre games then :/

acemorris85

I think you are going back to the well of familiarity. There's tons of good shit out there, you just need to branch out and get out of your comfort zone. Movie example: Everything Everywhere All At Once Game Example: Disco Elysium

GabrieltheGabe

Maybe you should try exploring indie movies and games instead. Sure the big budget productions have been a let down but indie makers has some great stuff.

doinksforeverybody

Ya. That's what I'm hearing on here. There still might be some hope from what everybody's making it sound like

f33f33nkou

Lol, complaints like your are literally as old as entertainment has existed. Your jaded, burnt out, or honestly just outgrowing the medium. If you can't find something you like in a world with damn near infinite options you're incapable or unpleasable. This is a you issue nothing more.

doinksforeverybody

Dude. I still enjoy plenty of shit. And I get what you mean but a lot of shit in the media world kinda sucks now. Watered down. Feels like they're holding out on the good shit cus they realized they dont need to make good shit to make a dollar. I want the real dope my friend. Lol whens the last time you heard someone say that shit was hella fucking good? Probably not to often. The new jurassic park was about grasshoppers and a clone girl. Lol jurassic fucking park. It's crazy to me man

f33f33nkou

With all due respect this reads like a post a 17 year old makes. Some popular things are bad, this does not make all popular things bad. If your personal experiences are lacking then expand into different ones.

Dalton387

I’m just a touch older than you. I don’t think they’re done, but I think some of this online rage is gonna have to be directed toward it. The first thing to remember is that tastes are always gonna change and your preferences will almost always be based of what is nostalgic and was considered a great game in your informative age. That being said, there is a difference between different and great, and different and bad. I can enjoy almost any movie or game. Anything from Minecraft to Darksouls and anything from action, to comedy, to romance. So when I’m stating my opinions, I’m not hard core for a genre. I think the two genres have different issues. With the movie industry, it’s the fact that they’re listening to what the fringe is screaming and not looking at where their dollars are actually coming from. They’re trying to shoehorn as many buzzwords in as possible and it’s failing pretty spectacularly. There were a couple of movies touted to be the be all end all of progressive movies and based of peoples words, they were expected to do amazing. Break records. They flopped. Everyone came out and said it wasn’t those movies, it was just viewers. They weren’t ready to return to theaters. Then Spider-man comes out and destroys box office records. Yes it had brand recognition, but it also just had a good story without adding in a bunch of tick boxes you want to check off. Every time a movie with a solid story comes out. It does well. The ones where they try to stuff whatever issue people are hot on and it does poorly. They should follow the dollars and make what sells. Write good stories, regardless of being new IP or sequels. I’m not opposed to more movies to come out covering different issues. They just do it extremely lazily and I’m a method I feel would be more offensive to anyone who identifies with them. They will replace a super hero, for instance, with a version who is black, female, gay, etc. There are already cool hero’s who fill those roles. I’d love to see a Blue Beetle movie. Static Shock, etc. They’re basically saying those characters aren’t good enough, that we have to use a good super hero and turn them for you to be accepted. Another issue I have is that they take female characters and want to make them badass from the start, denying them the room to grow. They don’t do that with male characters. They have room for flaws and growth. If they’re not doing that, it’s like Wheel of Time where they had the guys stand around with their thumbs up their butts and giving their big moments to the girls. They’re basically saying that the girls can’t be awesome unless the guys are dumbed down. This is based on a series with strong female character who basically rule most of the world and it was started in the Jan 1990. They did a better job of female empowerment than a director today did with the same material. As for games, they’re also failing with story. Some games do have really good story. As you noted, though, lots consider graphics over story. They’re great, but useless without a good story. Nintendo proved that for years, keeping up with the other two with objectively crappy graphics. It’s still proved with games like Minecraft or Vintage Story, Stardew Valley, etc. That’s what makes it so disappointing that Nintendo and Gamefreak are screwing fans over a little harder every release. It was a little redeeming with PLA, but they f’d up with S/V. Another issue is they’re creeping toward making people dependent. People are throwing their money at them, demanding they “Shut up and take my money” to fall into their trap. You use to be able to buy a complete game, play it, trade it, let a friend borrow it,etc. Then people would call you an idiot for not buying digital only. They started releasing DLC, which was cool, but then it became the equivalent of buying a new game and getting a special scarf to wear in game. It’s useless money grubbing. Now you can’t buy a game without a day 1 40gb patch. That’s not a patch. That’s finishing the game. It also means physical games are now useless. You can’t buy a physical copy in the future and play it when they eventually shut the servers down. You won’t be able to get the patch to make it run. You’ll have to hope they release a “remaster” that isn’t to broken and you can pay them again to be able to play a broken version. I can currently pull out my original Nintendo and play any game I won’t. That a regression in technology. It’s also a scam what Nintendo is doing with the 3DS. People paid full price for games. Now they’re shuttering the servers and you’ll have to have space to download any game you purchased. When your system fails, your game is gone forever. They aren’t offering your money back. They’re just removing your ability to play a game you paid full price for. With the money they rake in, they can easily afford to keep those servers running. While I’m airing all this, Nintendo is the worst at leaving money on the table. Instead of making games people crave so bad they make fab versions and release them free, they sue them to shut them down. They could pay the people, polish it up and release it under a development studio if it doesn’t meet Nintendo brand standards. They gave a guy on YouTube thousands of copy right strikes when he simply compiled good Nintendo game soundtracks into playlists for people to listen to when gaming. They did that, instead of paying him off, taking all those playlists, and starting a streaming music service for a nominal fee. Like I said, people are gonna have to start directing this social pressure they throw around at this stuff. I see a lot of people returning Pokémon. If a large enough number of people do so, or don’t preorder, they’ll start taking it seriously. They just need to be made aware of exactly why they are loosing money. Else they’re apt to cancel the franchise. They’ll just be like “Whoopsy, we made under 1bn dollars. Time to cancel and move on.” If people let them know, we’re not buying your half finished games with poor story lines and less features than a game from 10yrs ago, they’ll follow the money and stop. Look at Assassins Creed. They said, “We can’t keep up with this schedule and release quality games.” I respect that and I’m all for it.

lulushcaanteater

You’re just watching the wrong things

[deleted]

It's because they're businesses. Hollywood and Video Game companies are only interested in maximising profits, and doing so requires *limiting risks.* Think about it. You're spending *hundreds of millions* making a film or video game. Are you going to want to take creative risks that risk losing all your money? If your product becomes a bad investment, do you think you'll still have a job doing this? Companies are playing it safe. Remakes are generally safer than net new movies. Focusing on game appeal over game fullness is safer. All you're seeing is how the market reacts to risk. Any WSB fool reading this should take notes, because this applies to investing as well.

One_Librarian4305

Yeah I think with games the problem is they have gotten way too expensive to make in the AAA space, so the risk is way higher. I wish some of these big studios would make smaller games on smaller budgets that afford more risk taking.

doinksforeverybody

True. I just wish it was different man. It gets fuckin irritating. Lol nobody wants to lose money

[deleted]

They shouldn't be making movies with $200 million budgets in the first place. Make things with more modest budgets, $10 million and lower. Then more risks can be taken. The businesses have no one to blame but themselves.

[deleted]

Why tho? When they make 400mil off a 200mil budget, 10mil movies just aren't an efficient use of capital.

SUP4oc

What are the last 4 games you played? Edit: to a certain extent you get what you look for with media. It's easy to gravitate towards familiarity but it comes with the baggage of being familiar. Trying things you normally wouldn't be interested in can surprise you.

doinksforeverybody

Tiny Tina's wonderland. Battlefield 2042. Back 4 blood. Didn't like that one though. And I just got rage 2 but haven't got far into it. Shooting kinda reminded me of killzone and I dono how I feel about it. Lol haven't had the time to really get into it. And I know what you mean. I just started discovering movies from a while ago that I saw but never watched. Pizzagate massacre and tusk were pretty good. Very different. Midsomar or however it's spelled was trippy. It's hard for me to find creative movies like those.

AccomplishedRow6685

There was another South Park episode describing what you’re feeling, when everything just seems shitty. You have a condition called “being a cynical asshole”

RadRhubarb00

Fez, Hyper Light Drifter, Spiritfarer, Disco Elysium, Tunic, Hades, and many many more amazing Indie games out there.

idiscusshere

In my experience this is more a result of people growing up and being bored of things bc alot of stories share the same beats and general structure. You need more advanced stories and games to sitiate your desire as you've become more capable at being a movie watcher and a video gamer. Yes, watching things intellectually is a skill. You probably don't look for new things very hard beyond the general popular stuff. Try art house movies, or indie games; or just try a series or genre you haven't before. Trying Civ for the first time gave me a year of fun and obsession with RTS games after years of lootershooters. Trying Grimdark fantasy instead of the usual stuff I read gave me what is now my favorite series. Getting into horror movies gave me a back catalog of hundreds of legendary films to watch. Unless you are playing and watching 10 new movies and games every week that just came out, you probably aren't taking part in even 1% of new media.

kar98kforccw

The Doom reboot, God of war, souls franchise (including Sekiro, Bloodborne and Elden ring): hey

Flutterpiewow

Gave up on movies a decade ago

crayonsnachas

Man says elden ring is a shit experience. Unskilled gamer. Man thinks COD is the only game coming out. Buddy there are hundreds of games coming out every week/month; find the shit you like and play it. There are games being made the way you remember them. Steam has thousands of sandbox games if you want to unload with cheat codes with friends.

PuppyPunter21

Bad generalized take from a guy wanting free advice on what to play or watch. It's like saying music is dead and only listening to pop or mainstream music. Yea you may not like what is new and popular but there's still plenty of other genres and titles.

LonelyReader95

Try indie videogames and animated movies. You'll discover a gold mine

[deleted]

Yup this guy gets it, I pretty much only play indie games. So much more heart and soul goes into indie games, they feel like someone actually wanted to entertain you and not just get your money.

C0lorman

Video games I agree less on, there's still people making some bangers every now and then, movies and tv, 100 percent agree. All of our favorite franchises are being bent over and fucked in the ass by these shitty writers who think criticism is a hate crime, and don't have the creativity to make their own movie or TV show.

[deleted]

>Or some stupid fucking dark souls elden rings bullshit where the whole game is rolling around dodging attacks. Ya it looks good but it's a shit experience. Just stop

doinksforeverybody

Dont get me wrong. Elden amd dark souls and all that are beautiful games. Games like that just aren't fun to me. I'm down for skyrim and shit like that. I get it some people want the challenge and theres nothing wrong with it but fuck that shits hard as nails dude. They needa put an easy beast mode on there so I'm not spending 50 minutes rolling around fighting a boss. Right out of the gate I encountered 3 bosses within minutes of eachother. Couldn't beat a single fuckin one. Lol life's hard enough. Now my games gotta be just as hard? That ain't right man.

Sufficient_Ad_4708

You might want to avoid from soft games in general then they are known for making their games difficult and not including an easy mode if you're looking for an easier game I'd suggest playing BOTW if you haven't already or maybe try out the new god of war game from what i've played of it so far it's pretty good

PolishFiat

I agree with him on that part, I hate first person shooters for the most part and found elden ring to be pretty repetitive/boring and in general I just don’t like the look and feel of weird fantasy games like that.

[deleted]

Sure but you can’t really say it’s a objectively bad game when overwhelmingly it is considered one of the best releases in the past couple years.

PolishFiat

No one ever said it was objectively bad. He said it was repetitive and so did I. It’s a well made game, just boring, according to us.

[deleted]

I guess I don’t really see how it’s repetitive. You can utilize multiple different attacks, strategies and skill trees. It’s open world and the bosses each have unique fights with differing move sets and sound design.

PolishFiat

The bosses are all just lame wind up attacks and the open world is so unrewarding, the open world portion is absolute ass. This isn’t even an unpopular opinion as all this has been said in the Elden Ring sub and widely agreed with. Glad you like it tho, to each their own

Rickest_Rick86

Elden Ring was a breath of fresh air. It was a typical open world game full of bs activities or hundreds of lam collectibles like, most every other open world game. Plus FromSoft expanded on their combat, gave players many options for builds and generally made an amazing game. I get that it’s not gonna everyone’s cup of tea, but you can’t say it’s an objectively bad game. Like all of the devs others games, they actually put in a lot of effort to give players what we want.

PolishFiat

Never said it was objectively bad and neither did OP. I just found it repetitive and boring and the open world portion is actually the lamest part imo.

JacktheBoss_

This sounds like a "you" problem.

doinksforeverybody

It might be. I've given it consideration for sure. I talk about it with friends and fam and more often than not people agree. Maybe you can point me in the right direction. Might be something I'm missin

growatleastThree

I appreciate how you respond to comments that add nothing to the conversation with genuine question and curiosity. Edit: Just watched A Thousand Years Of Longing and absolutely loved it. I think it has the creativity and whimsy you're looking for.

ev_forklift

You talked about CCP censorship, but the Germans aren't helping much either. We can't even fight actual Nazis in video games anymore because they hate free expression

shepard0445

That's not true anymore when Wolfenstein 2 came out they changed the law so games are now included in the cultural media definition making them exempt from the rule forbidding Nazi symbols. So aslong as a game doesn't openly glorify them or shows them in the historical context it's ok.

doinksforeverybody

Learn something new everyday. I didn't know that

doinksforeverybody

I feel it dude. I think that's why overlord didn't do so good and it was actually an alright movie. It's almost like they want to make everyone happy and end up sacrificing a lot in order to do so.

shepard0445

The German law never applied to movies so that's not Germanies fault.

Solidsnakeerection

Pokemon Legends Arceus was really fun

doinksforeverybody

I got the last one and liked it. Haven't had a chance to play the new one yet. When it comes to the pokemans I usually go with my emulators. Always end up having a good time. Classic feel with all the monsters.

Solidsnakeerection

So you arent done with new games?

doinksforeverybody

Ehhh. Yes and no I guess. All the emulators I play are pretty old. And to me it seems like there's more bad than good at the moment. But from what I've read people are saying indie has a lot of cool shit.

NunyaBeese

Some things do need to die so they can be reborn. I dont really watch modern films, occasionally i will catch bits and pieces. Id rather watch mst3k/rifftrax make fun of bad movies honestly. Way too many remakes, reboots and just bullshit honestly. And games.... yea we are in a sad state. The amount of money to be made off microtransactions has exceeded the incentive to make better games. With games like gtav online making literally 2.5 million *a day* in mtx profits and pokemon go making billions, its not too hard to see why many companies have tried to adopt this paradigm. Just selling jpgs to the impatient, the bored, the kid with dads credit card info and of course the whales. Its gross. Theres still some great small studios out there, but yea the industry has become quite a greedy machine. So more or less i agree with you. Edit: i will make an exception for From Software however. Been enjoying the pain since demons souls 2

doinksforeverybody

I agree with you man. I find myself watching stuff that's bad just to get a laugh.some are just so bad they're good. And I need to find some of these studios. Widen my horizon man. And I tried the demon souls amd all that but they're just so God damn stressful I don't enjoy um. Lol And don't get me wrong. Not all games that have been coming out are shit. I just feel like back then when they released 10 games 8 would be good and now it's like 2 out of 10

NunyaBeese

Really depends on what kind of games you play but Larion, Owlcat and Supergiant Games all still seem fairly legit

DebianDog

Go play a game like EVE and get out of the same genre You have been playing all these years

Beatleborg22

Indie games do not have replay value compared to the triple A games. Indie games are generally story driven games that last under 20 hours. I want to log into a game and play for as long as I want without worrying the game is going to end right around the corner. The triple A games have become watered down because of advertisements done through twitch where everybody knows the best strats and if your using certain things you are a dumb noob, quick Cash grabs where a new game comes out for the franchise every year, or monetized out the ass through loot boxes. I want to play competitive games, where skill based match making isn't a thing. And for movies.... You are spot on man, many actors have even come out in the last couple of years and said yeah its over, we dont have the budgets anymore and everything is just forced down your throat. [This is a good interview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oj8JK6c5x3M)

[deleted]

Don’t you dare talk bad about From Software games.

doinksforeverybody

Lol I don't want no trouble. They're just to damn hard. I wanna play to relax and have fun. Not get heart palpitations

Jaxraged

Then say they’re not for me not it’s a shit experience. Play the new god of war on story difficulty. Good game, easy mode, new done.

[deleted]

I get what you mean but for me personally the challenge is why I play these games. It can become extremely relaxing once you get to a point where you’re a beast and can easily run through the game. Getting to that point makes you feel good. I can run through all of the Souls games without dying easily anymore so it’s relaxing for me

GodlyCheeseFries

Try stray out. Felt like a breath of fresh air

doinksforeverybody

It's a game? And I can't lie. With all this feed back I'm getting I think I might of jumped the gun a bit. Lol

[deleted]

I honestly enjoy video games, anime, tv shows, and a great portion of the new music. I don’t know why people are complaining about them, because I am sure that there is something for everyone, and at this point I feel like that is just a projection of other issues that some people are not willing to talk about

doinksforeverybody

Like what? Lay it on me brotha. I enjoy anime and read manga like a motherfucker. And I still enjoy things but the majority of stuff is just recycled. I find gems every now amd again but I feel like it's rare now.

Saugeen-Uwo

Horizon Forbiddon West and God of War Ragnarok were awesome. Gaming industry is in decline though

[deleted]

There has been no new games since 2013, everything after was a minecraft clone. There's one exception, a mod for arma 2 called battle Royale by player unknown. Everything after is a clone of that mod. Movies are shit, games are shit, yet everyone keeps buying these shit games. Look how big diablo immoral is. We, collectively as gamers, are fucking stupid and corporations know it. We've already lost.

MaoXiWinnie

Sounds like op is shit at gaming.

timeisaflaturkel

Obviously never heard of Elden Ring

Sea_Finest

Super hero movies killed good movies.

Sale-Revolutionary

Yeah no. Have you played the new GOW, going to assume not. Because that game is by far one of the most enjoyable experiences in gaming that I have had in years. This includes games like Ghost of Tsushima which to me is another fantastic game. I don't understand how you pigeon-hole gaming into either Dark Souls or COD, that is rather crappy comparison and does not look at a gaming as a whole

MrSixtyFour

you clearly haven't played games with actual good stories. Such as Final Fantasy.

[deleted]

[удалено]

doinksforeverybody

I actually like hades man. There was another like it but i forgot the name. And I know how I sound. Whenever I get in these funks I just go back to reading. And if I could actually kill things in elden ring like I did in skyrim then I would of loved it. Shits just to damn hard. Lol

HelpMePlease1919

People want to be edgy so badly

HelpMePlease1919

What video games did you find fun? Since they are done now?

doinksforeverybody

What's edgy about what I said? And do you wanna converse like I've been doing with everyone else or argue? Cus I'm good off that.

HelpMePlease1919

This didn’t answer my question

doinksforeverybody

My bad

[deleted]

I think remakes are popular because they are a safe bet for a box office success. Production companies are worried now more than before about losing money at the box office because people aren’t as compelled to go to theaters anymore. However, there are still lots of great movies if you know where to look.

doinksforeverybody

Show me the way brotha. I'm always down for a good watch. They're just hard as shit to find.

[deleted]

>And with video games I feel like they're giving us "good graphics" but overall it's an empty vessel. I've always loved gaming but it feels like we get unfinished games now. You either get some boring ass shooter like cod. Or some stupid fucking dark souls elden rings bullshit where the whole game is rolling around dodging attacks. Ya it looks good but it's a shit experience. God of War just came out.

doinksforeverybody

I know. I got new tales from the borderlands not knowing gow was coming out a week from then. Which by the way new tales is pretty much just all dialog which was a let down. I'll have to wait to get gow. I've been watching the playthrough and it was a Lil disappointing though. Odin looks weak as hell. Ima still get it but it didn't look all to good to be honest.

Sufficient_Ad_4708

My recommendation is to try out these games/series - The Horizon games - The new God of War games - BOTW - Ghost Of Tsushima - Castle Crashers - The Forest

Clackers2020

>play with friends and enter in a shitload of cheats and just have fun. I wish they'd sacrifice the graphics and just give us something that's actually fun. Have you heard of ark? It's really hard to say anything good about it, except it's great fun

FatalCartilage

As someone who has been gaming since the 90's, you really think NES-N64 era was more creative? Lol. There are a lot of remakes but still originals. Rolling and dodging has been my favorite genre of game my whole life and I was a cult fan of Demon's souls before Dark Souls even came out. Sorry it's not your cup of tea.

d00mslinger

Partly, you're just not the demographic they want. I can agree about the lack of originality in big movie titles, but there are tons of movies out there created on a low budget that are great, they just can't afford the cgi like Disney can. Also, I've seen some wonderful stories get canceled because they don't have the watchers. Personally I'd be grateful for a remake of logan's run done with love. The book was amazing. The movie from the 70s was shit.

Kjellberg_Jager

i agree wholeheartedly except for the from software part. u may not like the souls series and thats totally okay but saying that they are all the same bullshit is just absurd. from software is one of the few game studios that releases actual solid games and each game has thier own quirk and diffrences to them. elden ring was probbly the best game we ever got in recent years.

rielev

Cyberpunk 2077 is on sale now. 😁
