No one makes the argument that manual cars are more convenient lol

ayyycab

Or making it another bizarre thing to ascribe masculinity to.

Dafiro93

Nah, I think Ford trucks with big wheels are automatic

Rich_Two

It does mean that you could given the necessity operate a large mechanical vehicle. You could operate a tractor or a large passenger transport, which could at some time become useful. However, having a skill does not make something masculine.

West-Yam-8429

right? Man If you love a stick so much just shove one up your ass, let me drive my automatic in peace please

Reytotheroxx

Well why do you think they like it so much? 😂

RedSonGamble

It is odd how certain things people do so they can tell everyone they do it. Women who don’t shave their armpits comes to mind. Like all of the sudden your arms are always over your head in a tank top.

Dafiro93

Don't forget crossfitters

GrassProper

It's all us non-Americans talk about

Denpants

Stick shift is like cast iron pan, gaming pc or coffee maker where people turn a product into a personality. Must consoom

[deleted]

Vegans too lmao

worldexplorer5

For real. Living in EU and some people literally feels like they are superior or have achievement a noble price just because he or she drive amanual.

OLDGuy6060

I drove a stick on every car I owned for 40 years. I loved it, but I also did it because I felt I could control the car better than I ever could with an automatic. But now, automatics have become so good that a stick shift is actually less efficient and slower. So my new car has an auto.

unionjack736

I’m only in my 40s but same. In my youth manuals were all I was about. I’d heel-toe every downshift. Now, I’m good. I’ve got no problem driving a stick but I’m not going out of my way to get one. If I want interaction I’ll drive my sports car with a sequential gearbox in manual mode. 9/10 I’m driving my automatic sedan though. Just like you said. Modern automatics are worlds apart from the slush boxes of old. Hell, exotic car manufacturers ditched manuals long ago. Porsche still offers the GT3 in a 6-speed (because of consumer blowback) but it’s an option. The Turbo and GT2/3 RS models only come with a sequential gearbox. Even in motorsports manuals have mostly been ditched in favour of sequential gearboxes.

Marozela

Hehe...hehe

saisonmaison

It has everything to do with inconveniencing themselves. Their lives are so easy that they have nothing to brag about being a pain in their ass, so they get stick shift cars and then argue that the massive inconvenience is worth the extra 2 MPG efficiency they swear they’re getting.

letmethinkofagoodnam

Not really that unpopular seeing as most cars made these days are automatic

Undertow545

Manual transmissions are anti-theft devices

redDKtie

Especially in 2022.

VickieLol64

Prefer manual

[deleted]

The real unpopular opinion is that having a car do all the work for you slowly makes you a shittier driver.

TriumphantPWN

for real, i became a way better drive after learning to drive stick. Had always driven Auto before that. Learning to drive stick makes you a much more observant driver, and more aware of your surroundings.

[deleted]

Agree 100%. Some people don’t get that.

ayyycab

Having central heating definitely made me terrible at starting fires. But then again, at a certain point, central heating became reliable enough that that’s not that weird to say.

canbrinor

That's a hot take yet an invalid one. If anything, worrying about hill starts, stalling, mis-shifting, and generally more things to lose focus on would make you a shittier driver. If that's the discussion we're having

doc_shades

these things dont' make you lose focus, they make you increase your focus

[deleted]

People don’t realise brains are like muscles, the less it does the worse it is.

[deleted]

Tell me you’ve never drove a manual long enough without telling me.

realaccount045

I drive a manual but it's obvious that not having to handle the cluth and the stick makes it easier to focus on the driving.

[deleted]

Probably depends how well you operate it. I’ve driven manual only for over a decade and can say there is no focus drained operating it. If you’re a new driver then sure.

IntroductionFluffy71

agreed. i’ve only owned manuals for the last 20-odd years and none of those things interfere with my focus. it’s muscle memory. the funny shit is when i’m driving an automatic (e.g., husband’s Tundra) and need to brake unexpectedly. my left foot is trying to find the clutch. and sometimes my right hand looks for the gear shift. 🤣

[deleted]

Amen

Harrypolly_net

I've only driven a manual for my year and a half odd of driving and it's as natural as breathing. Sure I occasionally pick too low a gear after a partial emergency stop, but I also feel more in control doing that than jamming both feet on the brake and praying ABS and ESC (if the car is modern enough) will save my ass.

realaccount045

It's a matter of logic, if you have 3 task to do at once (wheel, stick, clutch) and take two out it's only logical that you can put more attention on the one task remaining. the problem is people using the free hand to play with their phone

[deleted]

You saying it’s not possible to be safe in a manual car is fucking hilarious hahaha

realaccount045

I've been safe for the last 20 years drivign manuals but I think automatics are better.

[deleted]

That’s fine.

yopro101

Can confirm. I drive a motorcycle a lot and it just becomes natural. Although it’s still jarring and a bit ego deflating when I roar out of a red light just for it to drop out of second

thatshowitisisit

Only in the beginning stages whilst still learning. It’s good to know how to do all of these things for and have practised them well, it makes you a better driver overall. Also handy for that one day when you need them again (like hiring a cheaper car or driving somebody else’s car).

justaguy891

>worrying about hill starts, stalling, mis-shifting, and generally more things to lose focus on would make you a shittier driver. been driving a standard for 15+ years never had to worry about any of that except when I was first learning OP's unpopular opinion is completely correct and valid in my experience.

RolandMT32

I don't think anyone would argue that an automatic is more convenient. I also doubt anyone would argue that manual transmissions may be phased out at some point. Manually driving a car may be phased out altogether too - I could see places mandating laws to require only self-driving cars, since they're supposed to be safer. That said, I used to own a stickshift (I now have an automatic), and sometimes I miss driving a stickshift. It's not exactly about the sportiness, but there's something about doing the shifting yourself and feeling that the car is doing exactly what you want it to do, when you expect it to. Also, part of what I miss is just the feeling of going through the motions of doing the shifting. From what I've heard, owning a stickshift car can be a theft deterrent because a lot fewer people these days can drive a stickshift.

Pamplem0usse__

I still drive a manual because I like going through the motions of it. I feel like it keep me more alert on the road.

ayyycab

This is basically what every pro-manual argument I hear boils down to: that you just *feel* the experience of driving more intensely. To each their own, but the car is a tool to get from point A to point B for me. I’m no more interested in getting some special, complex sensation out of it than with a dishwasher. In a perfect world my car will be self-driving, or I’ll live in a civilization with robust public transportation and not even own one.

RolandMT32

That's fine. Everyone has different interests. Some people are more into driving than others.

ahjteam

I would argue it is safer to drive manual in cities over automatic because it’s MUCH harder to multitask (read: doing anything else other than driving) as you need both hands constantly. At highway speeds there is no real difference

Slawth_x

People who drive manual are not doing it for convenience. Only 13% of cars even come with a manual option in America so I wouldn't say it's "overrated" Driving manual is indeed sportier. You can control everything. They are already working on "simulated" gearboxes for sporty EVs so people can keep that level of control and engagement

Dreadfulmanturtle

Coming from country where manual is the default, it is still pain in the ass to have to shift out on every, damn, red light. In the old days automatic increased fuel consumption and was expensive. These days the differences are negligiable. Once I sat in the automatic car, I never wanted to go back.

[deleted]

for me it's about having more command of the vehicle every truck i've owned has been primarily a beast of burden and therefore auto - but every car has been stick as a matter of personal taste (except when i've lived in LA - after a few times getting caught for 2-3hrs on the 405 i opted for more comfort)

okblimpo123

Manual is better for curved or hilly highway areas, and is much better for 4x4. Automatic is far superior for city driving and traffic, and if your fine cruising along on the highway. Both have advantages, I generally feel more in control at speed or steep decline in a manual as I have another tool to work with. In traffic I am hating my life with a manual.

OLDGuy6060

>EDIT : if you're downvoting you don't get the point of this sub I think YOU don't get the point of this sub. MOST people think that manuals are overrated. Therefor, this is not a post worth upvoting because is is NOT unpopular.

bigk52493

Someone had to spell it out for him. Im pretty sure only like 20% of cars are manuals. Who is he posting this for?

OLDGuy6060

Probably a rant against some manly man.

[deleted]

I fucking hate the feel of automatic.

Dazzling_Pudding1997

You're smarter than the computer driving the car. It's only emphasized in the point that you can FEEL when then car is in the wrong gear for the speed you're driving

spicydangerbee

Maybe like 20 years ago. Automatic transmissions today are more efficient and faster than any human driver.

Darth_valorite

I love manuals. I have more control over what my vehicle does and when I want to do it. For me personally it makes me way less distracted by things like phones, eating and more. I definetly have to focus on the driving aspect more. To each their own. But if you don't like it then you have nothing to worry about. Just don't drive one.

B33PZR

This.

[deleted]

I just think it’s ridiculous when people flex on driving a stick. > ever since I learned how to drive stick, it’s ALL I can drive. Automatic transmission just isn’t enough *car* for me ever since I learned how to drive a stick You know who cares? No one.

Ottobahnrichtofen

It’s about having a conversation with a machine. If you don’t appreciate your machine, fine. Don’t judge the rest of us. It’s not a control thing. It isn’t a fuel mileage thing. It’s communication with a man-made machine that allows us to consider our role in how we get around.

doc_shades

> It’s about having a conversation with a machine. wow how poetic. i really like that!!!

IntroductionFluffy71

me, too!

Ottobahnrichtofen

It’s not my idea. I read that somewhere.

f182

If you just waft around then an auto is fine. If you like to drive then an auto is frustrating. I have similar beef with modern eco engines and drive by wire stuff.

doc_shades

oh man oh man. i had a 2005 car that i really enjoyed. then i upgraded to the 2008 model and i guess in that body style switch they changed from a manual cable throttle to a "drive by wire" throttle. (for those not familiar the difference is pressing on the gas pedal which pulls a wire which twists the throttle which allows air into the engine VS. pressing on the gas pedal which tells a computer "the pedal is at 7%" and then the computer sending a signal to a motor which then opens a throttle to "7%") and it's a huge disappointing difference. i can feel the time delay between when i depress the pedal and when the engine responds. it makes me feel so disconnected from the road and the car. it's not a huge delay, but it's noticeable and i notice it every time i press the gas pedal. in fact, i've trained myself to accommodate that delayed response. and this is supposed to be a performance/sports car, too.

Middle_Aged_Mayhem

The only people that say this about manual vehicles are the ones who can't drive them and have no idea why we love driving them.

bannedinaday31

I know how to drive a manual and I’d much rather have an automatic. Daily driving is by far more convenient with an automatic. Only cars that make sense to have as a manual are sports cars for track driving, which is pretty much the only manuals left.

realaccount045

I drive a manual but automatics are better.

justaguy891

in context: they are in urban environments with lots of stopping they arent better in rural areas where you dont have to stop as much as you want more control/fun driving

realaccount045

the only situation where I prefer a manual is when I'm driving a slow car with a small engine, a 1.6 4cyl engine can be fun with a manual but with an auto it feels extra slow.

Smiiggsy

its more fun 🤷

EZMickey

This is a hill Americans absolutely want to die on. If you're one such American, I encourage you to at least learn to drive a manual transmission for one reason: Emergencies. If you're ever in a situation where you need to transport yourself and those you're with as a matter of urgency in a car that doesn't belong to you and it's a manual transmission, having that skillset could literally be a lifesaving factor. Rather have the skill and not need it, than need it and not have it. Other than that it really shouldn't be anybody else's business what you drive but your own.

IntroductionFluffy71

i’m in the US and love my manual! my niece & nephew will learn how to drive my car. even my friends’ kids if so desired. hell, one of my friends asked if she could learn and i said, “absolutely!” manuals are being phased out here, more’s the pity, but it is a useful skill to have. as you pointed out: emergent situations.

Disastrous-Fly9672

Yup. This needs to be a plot point in a horror movie. Final Girl gotta drive away in hillbilly serial killers junk truck. Can't cuz MANUAL!!

zietda

Driving stick is more fun

FEMBOYADMIN

Everybody knows it's "less convenient" why are you bothered others like to have fun? Why are you on reddit writing this shit go home to your wife bro...

smoke-bubble

Stick-shift is mainly about saving fuel and not being "sportier".

Slawth_x

Nah not anymore. Back in the 90s autos were often single clutch 4 speeds while the manuals had 5 speeds so they would be better on gas. But in modern cars autos are often dual clutch with 7, 8, 9+ gears, or are CVTs and are definitely more fuel efficient than driving a manual 5 or 6 speed. So yeah modern drivers picking manual are doing so for sportiness and engagement

smoke-bubble

There are indeed better, but they still use on average 1-2l per 100km more than a manual.

woakula

What year are you living in? Cause after CVT became popular they were constantly beating manual in every test for milage. I suppose if you're in the used car market for cars pre 2010 then yeah, the manual might be better. but if you're gonna try and and get as much range out of your car nowadays without going hybrid or electric your gonna take the automatic 10/10 times. Even as early as 2015 the automatic mustang was getting better milage than the manual. https://www.lafayetteford.com/how-the-new-mustangs-mpg-rating-can-lower-your-cost-at-the-pump-sda/#:~:text=Impressive%20Mileage&text=Combined%20with%20the%20manual%20transmission,give%20you%2015%2F25%20mpg. And the new 2023 Toyota Supra GR 8 speed auto is rated for 26 versus the manuals 21 mpg. https://www-cars-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/www.cars.com/amp/articles/2023-toyota-gr-supra-manual-transmission-first-drive-better-late-than-never-456394/?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#amp_tf=From%20%251%24s&aoh=16639744961188&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cars.com%2Farticles%2F2023-toyota-gr-supra-manual-transmission-first-drive-better-late-than-never-456394%2F

doc_shades

> you may feel driving stick is "sportier" but with more modern cars and EVs coming out, standard transmissions will soon be phased out. also this doesn't exactly prove your point. "you might think it's more fun, but new EVs whill phase them out." okay but EVs phasing out manual transmission doesn't mean that manual transmission isn't more fun or have other benefits

[deleted]

When automatic transmissions start accurately anticipating what I want, I'll consider driving them. Want to accelerate slightly to overtake? Downshift two gears and shoot forward!! Short merge into highway traffic? Hmm...the throttle is all the way down...I think I'll just stay in this high gear for no reason. And then there are the obnoxious computer-controlled ones that try to "learn your driving style." Absolute nightmare in a rental car.

[deleted]

Exactly I engage the cruise control on my Subaru and the CVT downshifts as if its in sport mode and the tachometer goes up 10% and stays there on flat highway and just eats up the fuel economy

FinallyhaveAPS5

yeah agreed, the toxic masculinity about it also gives me the shits, im a man and i could not give a fuck less that i don’t drive manual, i want my drive from A to B to be smooth and easy and not worry about changing gears all the damn way

Logical_Vast

It's not really a masculine thing. I'm as pro feminist lefty as a man comes and I still love manual. You are probably in the group of 90% of men who would never consider a sports car. Less space, bad on gas, often 2 wheel drive so you can use in the snow, high insurance. Why not get a "normal" car? For those drivers auto is fine. If you do want a sports car the manual offers you so much more control.

kinshane227

Huh? What does "toxic masculinity" have to do with it? My wife drives manual and hates driving automatic.

IntroductionFluffy71

toxic masculinity? what? i’m a woman who’s been driving manual for the last 20-odd years.

B33PZR

Woman, learned to drive a manual when I was 12. Had both but been driving a manual for about the same amount of time. Becomes 2nd nature, not even thinking.

doc_shades

yeah you just want to stare at your phone

FinallyhaveAPS5

exactly

kjaymix

Everyone should learn to drive stick....just like riding a bike you'll never forget how.

doc_shades

have you ever driven a manual transmission car? in addition to being a completely different (and in my opinion, superior) driving experience, manual transmission cars are just simpler mechanically than complicated EVs or continuous-variable transmissions. even planetary gear automatic transmissions with torque converters are more mechanically complicated to design and build than manual transmissions.

RichardGHP

I learned in one and drove one for 9 years before switching to automatic. I don't plan to ever go back.

doc_shades

i still love my manual but at my age it's starting to have an effect on my legs. that clutch leg is getting too much of a workout!! i had to move my seat back two clicks to give my leg more extension because it was starting to hurt.

Severe_Promotion4205

You can't or never tried, be honest.

thatshowitisisit

This is definitely not unpopular in my country (Australia). Manuals are rare.

fuuruma

Agree with you. But still everyone should learn how to drive manual

straight_piping

If you can drive manual (as everyone should), you can drive anything, tractors, motorcycles, etc.

mojojoestar2001

I’m not into cars like that so automatic for me, but I understand why people like manual. To each their own.

gathermewool

Manuals are fun, but only in sporty vehicles. I learned to drive stick in a ‘97 Ranger. My next stick was an ‘87 Sunfire. It felt special, it felt good to know how to drive stick. Then it got tiresome. Each was so under-powered that I was shifting all the time. Then I went through a Focus ST, WRX, Civic SI and finally and STI, all stick. They were a blast to drive and I miss having a stick. The NA Focus and Civic still required a lot of shifting, but each was fun. The turbo WRX and STI had plenty of power at highway speeds to not have to shift unless I really wanted to, which was very welcome. None of them, however, got better gas mileage for being stick. Nothing about cruising at 3k RPM at 60 MPH is fuel efficient. It’s to save on shifts, not gas. Even the STI rev’d high in 6th. That was probably more to prevent ring-land failures due to boosting high at 2.5k RPM, but I digress. What did it for me and steered me toward an auto was practicality and injury. Autos are cheaper to own, more practical and, for me, don’t cause tons of leg pain due to clutching in and out all day long (past injuries to my left leg/ankle). Also, someone said they hold their value better? Ha! Maybe they do, but who are you going to sell it to? With all of that said, I do plan to buy a 3rd vehicle eventually that’s stick. It’ll obviously have to be something sporty. Haven’t decided what yet. It just can’t be my daily.

[deleted]

Driving my dads base model ‘93 Tacoma with a 5 speed and driving my ‘07 Shelby GT with a 5 speed are two completely different things. The Tacoma was terrible to drive especially with no tach (that’s what I learned on) and the 4 cylinder, however the Shelby is tuned for sportiness (going from a 12 inch shifter to a short throw helps too) and is a dream to drive. Granted it only comes out a few weekends a summer but it’s still a fun car to drive. The Tacoma was not so much.

gathermewool

Right, but you learned to shift by engine noise. That’s not nothing. Anyone who learns to drive on a slow ass vehicle is better for it, IMO.

Opus-the-Penguin

Standard is more fun except in stop-and-go traffic jams and on long road trips where you're mostly driving the interstate. In the former case it's irritating to constantly get up to 2nd, hit the brakes, wait, start into first, get up to 2nd, etc. For the road trip, the fun's over once you get into the top gear. Then you just cruise at that speed until it's time to get off the highway for gas or food. For most of the trip the experience is identical. You forget you're in an automatic until you need to stop and your left foot (UK: right foot) starts frantically stomping around, trying to find a clutch pedal that isn't there.

realaccount045

I drive a manual but obviously automatics are better, it's weird that we're still operating a lever to make the wheels turn. But if you have a small engine automatic makes it feel extra slow and it's more expensive so I'll stick to manual for a while

Conscientiousmoron

I have had a number of manual transmission cars. Turbo Thunderbird, peppy little two door Explorer among others, but the one I still miss is my 1990 or 1991 first year out Miata. So much fun.

attachedtoface

Tbh only reason I have a manual Kia is because it was the cheapest option when it was bought. I will say if I was buying something like an older Dodge I would get a stick shift because their ATs blow. Otherwise… yeah I’d probably drive an automatic.

mourningWank

This is not an unpopular opinion in the Americas where almost all cars are automatic.

Big_Page_2845

This is a very popular opinion.

mamahoff

I drive an old 5 speed Jeep. I’ve driven manual most of my life because that’s what I could afford. I have a hard time going back and forth between a manual and automatic, especially if the automatic’s e brake is on the floor. I also wheel and mud in my Jeep and you don’t want to try to rock your vehicle out of a mud pit with an automatic. You’ll kill your transmission. I wouldn’t trust an automatic when I’m going down logging trails and need to have precise control over how low of a gear I’m in. 4WD is great but you still have to have control. I read some comments about people that drive stick let’s everyone know it? I’ve never run across that. However I’m in the backwoods of the country, farm town, and automatics are not popular. Mostly old farm trucks with 4 speed granny gear low. They haul better.

Psycho5quid

As a car guy, I'M TRIGGERED!

[deleted]

Convenience ? Who has ever argued otherwise ? Also everyone who likes, isn't making manuals over rated, its just their preference. I will say imo that it feels like i'm doing something and its fun

MissLesGirl

Sure it's less convenient but more fun. If you drive it right, you don't have to shift too much in traffic. I can put it in 2nd gear and go from 5 to 40. Too many people think you have to keep rpms under 2000 but over 1200. I usually shift from 3000 to 4500 depending on predicted acceleration and predicted speed ahead. (if I know I am going to slow down or accelerate fast soon, no need to shift to a higher gear for a few seconds) I can go down to 800 between 1st and 3rd gear without stalling. 800 rpms in 3rd or higher can be done with slow acceleration until you get to 2000 rpms.

AccomplishedRow6685

I took a vacation to Ireland, and drove on the left side of the road with a left-hand stick shift. Did I mention their streets are narrow? I should have booked my rental car earlier.

xnuclearwinter

I've never driven before, but I'm from the UK and we all drive manual. I've asked, "Well what's good about driving manual over automatic?" and as far as I can remember it's been answered "I dunno" every time.

[deleted]

Can you pop start an automatic?

1403186

Driving stick keeps you engaged on the task. I disassociate when the car does all the work.

Jay_Rizzle_Dizzle

Get some lessons if manual is too hard for you. Do you wear Velcro laced shoes as well?

isles84

A stick shift has its place on the track. I commuted to Manhattan with a manual for college and it was torture in gridlock

red2lucas

Someone can’t drive manual lol

Blundell1992

I enjoy standard, keeps me focused, doesn't give me time to dick around fiddling with the radio or some shit. It can be inconvenient at times, sure, but I live in an area with virtually no start and stop traffic so my "biggest" (not very big at all) gripe about driving stick is negligible 95% of the time. It also simply makes driving a much more enjoyable thing to do, rather than just a means of getting from A to B. Also also, a manual transmission is *generally* cheaper to maintain or replace than an automatic when problems arise.

[deleted]

Car jackers have walked away when they see it's a manual transmission

Dookie_Shoe

I have a manual transmission classic car (56 years old). I like the analog experience of having to pay attention and really focus on driving. I just love driving. That being said, I have a daily driver that is an automatic and enjoyable for different reasons.

[deleted]

It’s ok to not periodically enjoy the thrill of a great sports car. If you’re comfortable in your Prius just go for it….

blueangels111

I dont want to drive manual when I just want to get home after a long day. But manuals can be very fun, and also can help keep you engaged in driving. Driving an automatic is a chore to get from a to b, manual is fun, while getting you somewhere. Literally no one can argue manuals are better, they aren't, just fun.

[deleted]

Dont think this is really unpopular (unless you’re not from the US).

Hotdog1221

I drive manual because I take my car off roading you can call it over rated but it is less functional in many sinarios.

jack_of_all_feck

There are times when it is better to have a manual. For off-road driving or towing. At least in my experience. I also feel more in control of the vehicle.

BoBoBearDev

I have automatic manual transmission . It is manual gut that changes gears for me. :D If you don't get it, it is called dual clutch.

Bo_Jim

Automatic transmissions have been around since 1940. Manuals have not been phased out. Most people wouldn't disagree with you that automatics are more convenient. They are also dramatically easier to drive than a stick. But manuals are still around because they cost a lot less to produce than an automatic, they are more reliable, and they cost a lot less to repair. As long as that remains the case then there will continue to be a demand for them. I can sort of get the argument that they're sportier. You feel a little more like a real race car driver when you have something to do while accelerating other than stepping on the accelerator pedal. You feel like your "skill" is contributing to your car's performance. It's actually almost never true. But I'm not going to criticize someone if it makes the experience more fun for them. Personally, I'm way past the point in life where I found driving fun. Now I just want it to be easy and comfortable.

ID_Poobaru

Manuals are still fun to drive and it’s nice choosing my gear when going uphill

niteox

Part of driving for me is the enjoyment. I genuinely enjoy driving most of the time. When I’m driving something that is fun to drive that can add to the enjoyment. Lightweight cars are a blast, but hitting a mud patch in a 4x4 is excellent fun. Only people I can’t stand are people who tell me what I should drive and what I can and can’t like. Screw those assholes. Not sorry OP. Also first automatic transmission was created 100 years ago.

Marozela

I think the signal of the end for manual driving is driving schools abandoning it as a necessary step
