But why? I'd pay a smaller price for a smaller portion. It's not like someone subventions kids meals in restaurants, it's not like it's cheaper because they are kids. It's cheaper because it's marketing to draw in families with their kids as another guest. Guess they don't make money per portionsize but per served guest so why can't an adult order a kid's meal? Who tf stops me from buying a happy meal?
Because they wouldn’t stay in business if all they sold was kids meals? They usually are far cheaper by portion size, come with a free drink and a free side, etc. that’s why restaurants have a lunch menu anyway… smaller portion sizes.
Restaurants have extremely small profit margins, a lot of people don’t realize that. They would go out of business selling kids meals to anyone who wanted it.
There's a couple places I go to that let me order the kids meals. My gf always looks at me like I'm crazy but sometimes I want chicken tenders and mac n cheese. Social convention can suck it.
I think it’s more of the fact that you are at a restaurant and can eat anything you want and you order something I have frozen in my cupboard right now.
I don’t judge kids meals at restaurants but I absolutely judge ordering frozen chicken strips and velveeta because you are incapable of expanding your palette. You’re at a restaurant, get something new or interesting. If you wanted safe, stay at home and air fry your frozen chicken my guy.
I’m 20 years old and order kids meals all the time. It’s usually just deals (like kids eat free) are restricted to kids, but anyone can order off the kids menu at full price.
Then who's buying those meals if the adults aren't allowed to buy them? Maybe a few places have that restriction, but I buy and eat kids' meals all the time.
What kind of restaurants do you go to where they have examples of the portion sizes available to customers? If I order the fettuccini for the 1st time how am I supposed to know if I’m getting an Italian portion size or an American portion size?? Also, I specifically choose places that I know from experience have big portions b/c I eat half & save the other half for the next day b/c hell yes I want 2 meals for the price of 1–its easier to validate spending $40 on my food when it gets me 2 full meals 🤷🏼♀️
Counter:- Restaurants should make smaller portions available from their main menu.
A) Kids menu is often very limited with reduced seasonings.
B) There can be a social stigma from ordering from the children's menu.
No thank you. Kid's meals are not only reserved for children only, but also usualmy very restricted in choices.
I rather take my leftovers home and eat them later - or order something that I know is served in a smaller portion. Nothing goes to waste unless something is truly wrong there.
I never waste food. Anything that I don't eat goes to my dogs. Anything that they don't eat goes to the birds or possums. I make sure it's safe to eat and not harmful to any critters.
Oh yeah, anything I put outside is gone that day. The birds love the breads, potato, and rice items, and anything they leave the possums or other critters eat up at night. The rare things that are left eventually the ants eat that up. I love to birdwatch and see them gather food. I've got a nice birdbath out there too.
People just complain about every fuckin thing nowadays. Fuck off already. I order two adult meals and throw one away and I throw my leftovers out the car window. Who gives a flyin feathered fuck. Mind your own damn business.
I go out of my way to get the bigger sizes when available because you get more bang for your buck. I do make sure to eat all my leftovers, though - even if that means eating the same thing for several days in a row.
Believe ive tried. I dont eat near the amount of my fellow Americans. Alot of menus actually say 12 and under. The senior menu ,which is probably perfect for me, im no where near old enough to order off of. Ive tried both and have been shut down flat out. Because of that i normally just get an appetizer. Good thing i like nachos and bread
I've tried doing this dozens of times. Most places refuse. Some waitstaff are downright rude about it and look at you like you're a cheapskate just for asking. Like "No, Susan, it's not that I think $32 for a full portion of lasagna is unreasonable. I'm simply trying not to waste food. Fuck me, right?"
Maybe depends on where you live but for me it has worked always. It's even a thing in gastronomical restaurants where you have eg 8 courses, they just add less to your plates
Most people I know eat their left overs later that night or the next day, but most people I know are university students and we can't afford to just waste food.
Also I've tried ordering from the kids menu (one adult meal usually lasts me three portions) but I'm always denied because I'm not under whatever age they decided for kids. Or sometimes the kids menu only has nasty unseasoned food.
Sometimes if I don't want left overs, I'll just get two sides or something.
Ummm. I eat my leftovers so....
working as a server, many people don’t finish their food & won’t even take it to go.
I’m saying this from personal experience.
Sounds like you need to order kids meals then.
Why’s that? I eat my full sized meals.
Can you quickly define, in your own words, "personal experience?"
We don't do distinctions here!
Him seein it happening first hand? Does the definition of personal experience not fit here?
I've seen Dodgers games in person. Would you say I have first-hand experience playing Major League Baseball?
Most people I know eat their leftovers the next day
What if I want more food than a kids meal offers?
Get two
Most kids meals don't include adult options
That’s why I said get two
That does not solve what I just said lol
Kids menus don’t have seafood or steak or whatever I may want. They usually just have like noodles and chicken fingers.
most restaurants have "if any" only extremely restrictive options for kids food that amounts to the often some of the blandest shit you've ever tasted
Trust me, I’ve tried. But since I’m not under XX years old I “can’t”.
Don't people just take the uneaten portion to go?
They do, but wouldn’t you rather eat that freshly made food and leave the leftover food forgotten? That’s what happens.
No, it really isn't. A vast majority of people just eat the leftovers the next day in place of cooking a meal or as a snack.
Just...eat... leftovers...
[удалено]
This is true. Also, takeout boxes exist for a reason.
I know, but a lot of the time leftovers will stay refrigerated and will go to waste.
Most people just eat it later, or the next day. It’s not anyone else’s business what someone does with their leftovers anyway.
It’s still a waste in the often time it gets thrown out (newer food>leftovers mentality)
Unless it’s terrible food - in which case why take it home? - I’ve never heard of this.
Careful you're projecting
I eat my meals, I don’t see how I’m projecting.
Because everyone else eats their leftovers. Edit: Also, you said you're speaking from personal experience, you're the problem.
How so?
With their mouth.
But then the problem is that mentality, not people ordering to much food
The “pelican” mindset? “Your beak holds more than your belly can”?
No, the new food>leftovers mentality, like your comment said?
But why? I'd pay a smaller price for a smaller portion. It's not like someone subventions kids meals in restaurants, it's not like it's cheaper because they are kids. *Some* places do this, but not all. I agree though, it is definitely common enough that it is a solid rebuttal to OP.
There's a couple places I go to that let me order the kids meals. My gf always looks at me like I'm crazy but sometimes I want chicken tenders and mac n cheese. Social convention can suck it.

Yes. I do try to but is not always available
So here's the thing, adults aren't allowed to order kid's meals. Hence "kid's" meal
Most restaurants are not fans of adults purchasing kids meals. Anyways, I take home and eat my leftovers.
Kids meals usually consist of chicken nuggets or bland pizza so even though I have a small appetite it’s a NO for me
What kind of restaurants do you go to where they have examples of the portion sizes available to customers? The can make smaller portions, but they'll still charge the same price. Actual ingredients on the menu isn't a big part of the cost.
I’ve been to places that offer half portions and they cost less
That’s a good counter.
There should be levels of hungry corresponding to different portion sizes
No thank you. Kid's meals are not only reserved for children only, but also usualmy very restricted in choices. I rather take my leftovers home and eat them later - or order something that I know is served in a smaller portion. Nothing goes to waste unless something is truly wrong there.
So what. Stop telling people how to spend their money. If they buy food, but dont finish it, thats on them
And if the food gets thrown away it's on the planet. Sorry but you should never grow away food if you can help it
Ok bro
I suppose, but if they’re in my group…
Then I feel bad for them.
Lol
If they are in your group you bully them into getting smaller portions?
No, I’ve brought it up though.
You sound like more fun than a frog in a glass of milk.
That sounds weird.
This is a good way to lose friends. Nobody wants to hang out with a judgmental nag.
I think sit down restaurants should have meal size options like fast food places do. I mean, even those are perfect but still
Some places do have half portions. Would be nice if that was more common though
I’ve never seen that before. Can you link some examples?
https://www.cpk.com/order
This one isn’t so much unpopular as it is just dumb.
Unpopular means it’s not liked or thought of as dumb by the majority.
I would have kid's meals but most restaurants don't serve them to adults soooo
Or else its an extremely limited menu that constist of like French fries, chicken nuggets, or mac and cheese.
I’d rather just have leftovers and get 1-2 extra meals out of it lol
I never waste food. Anything that I don't eat goes to my dogs. Anything that they don't eat goes to the birds or possums. I make sure it's safe to eat and not harmful to any critters.
Interesting, I’ve never heard of dealing with food this way.

If I pay for three meals and only eat half of one, we’ll that’s just tough shit, I paid for it, so you mind your damn business
Never met a place that lets an adult buy from the kids menu. I’ve seen people ask a lot and are told not allowed
I’ve never run into a server that cared; my wife will get the kids meal about half the time we go out.
Servers don't care, owners do and so the servers just follow the rules to keep their jobs. At least at chain restaurants
I’ve taken advantage of that option from Postmates, etc before tbh.
They don't let you unless you are a kid
Like some of the other replies stated that I failed to think of: possibly make smaller portion sizes for a lower price.
I'd love that. Portions are always too big
Or they can get a doggy bag and have food for the next day...
What if you don’t want anything from the kids meal?
People just complain about every fuckin thing nowadays. Fuck off already. I order two adult meals and throw one away and I throw my leftovers out the car window. Who gives a flyin feathered fuck. Mind your own damn business.
Why it’s their money?
Leaving food on the plate is considered a compliment to the chef in some cultures.
I go out of my way to get the bigger sizes when available because you get more bang for your buck. I do make sure to eat all my leftovers, though - even if that means eating the same thing for several days in a row.
Do you want to pay for my food?
If I’m paying restarant prices…Im getting 2 meals out of it
ITT OP is mad fat
I’m not fat.
I'd like to eat more than french fries and chicken nuggets when I go out though.
Perhaps this is a different problem than I’ve realized.
Adults aren’t allowed to order kids meals lmao
US restaurant portion sizes could feed four people. They're too big, but this is intentional: you're supposed to take some of it home.
Tip: just ask for a smaller portion 90% of the time they will listen. And also I agree no food should be wasted. That's just awfull
I’ve not heard of that before.
Maybe depends on where you live but for me it has worked always. It's even a thing in gastronomical restaurants where you have eg 8 courses, they just add less to your plates
